Prime Big Deal Days board game deals: All the classics are on sale!

Update 10/7/24: If there’s a product category I get excited about, it is board games. In searching through what Amazon had to offer, I was able to find hot discounts and suitable games for just about any table out there. Whether they’ve been played (and loved) by me personally or someone in my game group, these games have all passed the test of being lovable, direct, and great to play. Note that many of these deals are “With Prime” meaning you’ll need an Amazon Prime membership to get them.

With October 8 and 9 having some great Prime Big Deal Days deals, now is the perfect opportunity to pick yourself up a board game, especially since it’s one of the few days of the year where board games have some solid discounts. To that end, we’ve gone out and collected some of our all-around favorite board game deals for you to check out. That said, if you’re a more traditional PC gamer, then check out these Prime Day gaming laptop deals and Prime Day gaming PC deals while you’re at it.

Draftosaurus — $14 (with Prime) $25 44% off

There’s hardly a more underrated drafting game out there. Whether you’re an MtG nerd looking for a 15 minute drafting fix or have a dino-loving kid ready to start their first planning games, this is it. This game has a light exterior and easy-to-understand ruleset, but has nonetheless satisfying gameplay for any gamer.

Jekyll vs. Hyde — $14 (with Prime) $14 39% off

The Jekyll vs. Hyde game box and components.
Mandoo Games

It’s hard to get four together to play Hearts of Spades, but this two-player trick-taking game can quickly fill the spot. While simple to play, wrapping your mind around the different roles in the game, when to use special moves, and the unique one-vs-one trick-taking atmosphere will mean this game will take ages to master.

Codenames — $20 $25 20% off

Codenames being played.
Czech Games

If there’s a game you’ll hear non-boardgamers cite in recent years, its the word association game Codenames. I can like Codenames, you can like Codenames, we can all like Codenames. There’s a weird blend of strategy, word play, and social dynamics at work in the game. Plus, it is easy to accommodate groups of any size (you can play seamlessly in teams) and if a player leaves early or comes in late you can plop them in with little fuss. A great first or last game in your night’s lineup.

Rallyman: DIRT — $25 (with Prime) $45 45% off

An example of Rallyman: Dirt being played.
Synapses Games

If you’ve got a group that’s tired of “victory points” style games with 7+ points trackers to follow, this push your luck racing game will be refreshing. Push your car, but not too much, to win the rally. You get to design the courses with hex pieces, so there’s (essentially) endless variety to be had.

Dominion (2nd Edition) — $34 $50 32% off

The box of Dominion 2nd Edition from Rio Grande Games.
Rio Grande Games

We know that if you’re a turn-based computer games gamer, you’re still playing Slay the Spire. So, why not also play one of the original competitive deck-builder boardgames as well? Each game has different sets of cards to purchase from, giving it depth and lasting power for your table. Plus, there are expansions!

Space Base — $37 $45 18% off

The box of John D. Clair's Space Base board game.
AEG

Space Base may not have battles, but it feels more like the autobattler genre in boardgame format more than any other game I’ve played (and arguably more so than which imitates many tropes of the genre). Players acquire ships and get lucky to get resources and, eventually, enough points to win. This game uses a combination of luck and strategy, so even a new player can win.

How to Choose a Board Game on Prime Day

If you’ve never really gotten into the world of board games and are only familiar with things like Monopoly or Clue, then a good place to start is to look at our roundup of the best board games and pick the things that may seem interesting to you. These are all really great starter board games that can ease you into the wider world of board games, especially since you can go very complex if you’re looking for that.

On the other hand, if you’re ready to jump right in, then you should think about the style of a board game that you like to play. For starters, there are entirely co-op games where everybody works together to reach a goal, such as Pandemic or Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert. If you want to add a little bit of tension to the situation with potential traitors, then Dead of Winter, Nemesis, and The Thing are all great options. You could also check out very social games, such as Coup, Codenames, and Wavelength, which are all great fun to play with six or more people.

That brings us to the next point: one of the most important things to consider when buying board games is how many people you regularly play with and how long you have to play. There are board games that are for as few as two people and as many as ten, and some board games can last 15 minutes, while others can easily last three to four hours. As such, you should plan around your usual gaming group and time.

How We Chose These Board Game Prime Day Deals

Games can be pretty personal, and so any suggestions we make here tend to fall back on our own experience as people who love board games. That means that we mix and match the sort of deals we put up here to ensure that everybody can find something that they enjoy, as well as get it at the cheapest price possible. That last bit is important because some board games can get exceedingly expensive, especially the more complicated they get, so it’s not always easy to justify the cost.

As such, we rely on our own experience as deal hunters, and our tools, to ensure you get the cheapest and best games in various categories so that you can buy with confidence.

How to Choose a Gaming PC Deal on Prime Day

Interestingly enough, Gaming PCs probably have some of the most complex and varied configurations out there, even compared to laptops, so it can be a bit overwhelming to make a good pick. That said, there are some basic standards that you should look for, such as having at least 8GB of RAM if you’re buying a general-use desktop and 16GB at minimum for a gaming desktop. You can actually check how much you need for various uses with our guide on how much RAM you need.

Also, if you’re building a gaming PC, then you have several choices for GPU. If you mostly play strategy games, indies, and casual games, you don’t really need a super-powerful GPU, so something like an RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 will be more than enough. On the other hand, if you want to play the latest games at 4K, then only the RTX 4080 Super and the RTX 4090 are going to be feasible. As for CPU, again, for most folks, an i5 or R5 will suffice, but if you’re building anything better than a budget gaming rig, then an i7 or R7 is the way to go.

There’s also the option of buying something more budget-friendly now and upgrading later, in which case you should check out our guide on how to build a PC from scratch to get a better sense of what you’d be comfortable with.

How We Chose These Gaming PC Prime Day Deals

With such a huge selection of gaming PCs out there, we really have to look through dozens of pages of deals so that we can compare the specs vs. the price. Not only that, but we also have to lend some focus on what configuration we’re recommending, since some pre-built PCs may not have balanced specs. For example, a brand my stick a high-end CPU on a mid-range build, and that doesn’t really offer anything except in very specific circumstances the average consumer won’t really run into.

At the end of the day, though, our main focus is always on getting you the best and cheapest deal for your money so that you can buy with confidence.

Apple M4 MacBook Pro unboxing video reveals key details ahead of official launch

Apple enthusiasts got a treat today as a new unboxing video surfaced online, showcasing the upcoming 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the highly anticipated M4 chip. The video, shared by the Russian YouTuber Wylsacom, gives viewers a first look at the device ahead of its expected November 1 release date.

Apple M4 MacBook Pro unboxing surfaces online

The unboxing video of the Apple M4 MacBook Pro reveals several new features and design details. The packaging closely resembles the artwork from Apple’s previous MacBook models, maintaining a consistent design language. It features the same sleek wallpaper seen on the M3 MacBook Pro, adding to the speculation that this new model will continue the trend of minimalistic visuals.

Wylsacom’s video provides a detailed look at the packaging, which hints at some impressive specifications. The device in the video comes with 512GB of storage, 16GB of RAM, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a MagSafe charging connector. This unboxing offers the first tangible evidence of the upgrades Apple is bringing with the M4 MacBook Pro.

The key highlight of the Apple M4 MacBook Pro unboxing video is the upgraded hardware. The new model reportedly includes a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, an improvement from the M3 chip’s 8-core CPU design. The addition of a third Thunderbolt 4 port and the jump to 16GB of RAM in the base model suggests that Apple is aiming to enhance both performance and connectivity for its users.

This upgrade marks a significant leap from the current M3 MacBook Pro, which only offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports and 8GB of RAM in its base configuration. The M4’s enhancements, if proven accurate, indicate a focus on boosting multitasking capabilities and overall processing power.

M4 MacBook Pro’s benchmark performance revealed

In the Apple M4 MacBook Pro unboxing video, Wylsacom also shared Geekbench test results, which offer insights into the device’s performance. The M4 chip scored 3,864 in single-core tests and 15,288 in multi-core tests. For comparison, the base model M3 MacBook Pro generally scores around 3,000 in single-core and 11,800 in multi-core tests. This significant boost in performance is likely due to the increased number of CPU cores in the M4 chip.

These results suggest that the M4 chip could deliver more efficient and faster performance than its predecessor, potentially making it a game-changer for professionals who rely on heavy computing tasks.

Despite the early reveal, Apple’s official announcement for the M4 MacBook Pro is still expected at the end of October, with a release date set for November 1. While the unboxing video provides an intriguing glimpse into what the new laptop might offer, the tech world will have to wait a few more weeks to confirm the full details.

As Apple prepares to debut its M4 Mac lineup, this unboxing video has already set the stage for what could be one of the company’s most significant upgrades in recent years.

Oil jumps as market waits for Israel attack on Iran

Croft: The oil market is still in watch-and-wait mode.

U.S. crude oil rose nearly 3% on Monday, as the market waited for Israel to strike Iran.

Oil prices spiked last week on fears that Israel could hit the Iran’s oil industry in retaliation for Tehran’s ballistic missile attack.

U.S benchmark West Texas Intermediate surged 9.09% last week for the biggest weekly gain since March 2023. Global benchmark Brent jumped 8.43% for the biggest weekly advance since January 2023.

Here are Monday’s energy prices:

  • West Texas Intermediate November contract: $76.44 per barrel, up $2.06, or 2.77%.
  • Brent December contract: $79.91 per barrel, $1.86, or 2.38%.

President Joe Biden on Friday discouraged Israel from striking Iranian oil facilities, after prices jumped about 5% a day earlier when the president suggested the U.S. was discussing the possibility of such a strike.
