$150-ish for a 48TB+ Awesome Storage Server - 454

The IBM x3650 M1 just keeps to amaze me. Now with a newer Raid Controller, here the M5015 it will do 6*8TB,, and probably more.

The $150 price would be for the server, not for the disks to put in the server.

Prices vary,, a lot,, seen M5015 down to $55 and up to $200 side by side,,,look around. (more then my links)

Got 5 x 6TB red drives purchased over the last 3 years or so.. I confirm, not a single issue, these disks also generate less noise and vibrations than many other disks. I will soon have to start considering 8 or 10TB though..

hehe, damnit, I thought you'd gotten hold of 48 tib for 150$… Disks are expensive 🙂

IIRC, the reason why their is a small cache on a WD red is because it expects to be in a RAID. And normally your RAID card is the cache. correct me if I'm wrong.

if you need more details on which drives last the longest in heavy duty usage environments, check out the Backblaze reliability reports (https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-failure-rates-q3-2016/ ) … the 6TB Red drives arent looking too flash 🙂

You are an inspiration to lots of people, Including me, Thanks to you i am working on my own server cabinet, bought myself a GSM7224, i am working on fixing an old computer to turn it into a server and also working on a new Xeon server to run a game me and my friends are working on, Thanks a load 🙂

Hi, for your own servers, would you look at running openZFS with the whole cashing/zils and zlogs etc, or do you keep it simple, and just use the options in vshphere?
    I only wonder because
A- your clients use vshpere, so the more you know the better, but
B- you could drill down on data on your personal data center with control over frenas/bsd if you controlled it yourself.

I ask this in interest, as I understand you are a man who excels at "getting it done, and getting it right" rather than someone who wastes time messing with stuff that takes time to master, but I am curious.

By the way, not enough people appreciate that you actually spend time going through comments- so many Youtubers don't, but I guess you are a diamond in the rough (or some such praise 🙂 idk)

I thought you were saying you could get 48TB of storage for $150!

That 8TB drive you got is $310 USD.
This is what I want to build for Mass Storage. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rYkDbv

If you are going to use this for ZFS or other software raid i would go for the second card you mentioned , you dont want all the raid controller stuff for software raid, and that one can be flashed to think its a HBA, much better option for software raid.

    November 9, 2024 at 11:43 am

This I think is called click bait since 150 will not get you a 48TB server any time soon. If we just look at the 6 drive bays times 8TB you would have a 43ish real TB raid 0 which I would not consider as enterprise storage, so really you need at least a HW raid 5 and preferably with 1 spare, so then we are down to aprox. 29TB of usable space. I suppose you could also do a ZFS SW raid and use the ssd as a Cache Drive, again ideally you would want to have at least 2 ssd's then which means you only have 4 drives left for your rust leading to 14.3 TB raid 5+1 with ssd raid 1 cache. To save some money I would stay away from raid drives and instead buy regular 7200 rpm desktop drives, there are reviews from cloud storage vendors online on which drives are most reliable, they quickly concluded that raid drives are rarely worth the extra cost of your main target is lowest cost per TB

I can do 4X 10TB HDD in my synology NAS. 10TB are still kind of $$, even 8TB are a bit unless you find a deal.
I have always liked WD the best of HDD vendors. I have worked with a few others and had good luck though. I got an 8TB Seagate external for like $200-220 on a sale. I may get another and gut the HDD out and put in my PC as the data HDD.

Hey Morten, hope you had a nice Christmas!
I'm running a m1015 in my freenas server. They can in fact be easily re-flashed and be put to use as hba' s for file systems requiring direct disk access 😉 handy if you just want to hand the drives over and speed up boot.
    https://www.servethehome.com/ibm-serveraid-m1015-part-4/
A very nice card to use, but it does not support sata3 drives only sata2 so more ideal for mechanical drives I think.

Hi, Find your videos fascinating. Would like to buy an X3650 M1 for use as a NAS box (running xpenology at a guess) but am borderline OCD and would want to be able to source a server that's in good to excellent condition cosmetically – Is this possible or are they just too old and scarce to source in good to excellent condition please? Thank you for your comments and keep up the great work. Kind Regards.

Please I have a question for you. You can tell me how do you manage the raid controller with ESXI?

I have the same servers (3650 type 7979, raid controller 8k) and esxi 6.0 but i cant manage the raids.
I can see the disk in the vshepere client but i can do nothing more, i cant install the software manager and i dont have the remote supervisor adapter 2.
How do you control the disk in the raid?

Thanks, the videos help me a lot witch this servers.

Wish I could get an x3650 for $18 🙂 Some people just manage to catch really sweet deals on eBay. Last server I picked up was ~$200 and it was a Dell R710 with dual XXeon 5520's and 48gb ram. Unfortunately the PERC-6/i card in it doesn't support larger than 2tb drives (at least from my initial research)

I have two USB3 8tb drives. I've been retiring my Dell 2950 servers for Intel Nuc i5 and Nuc i7 systems running esxi 6.

the power bill kills me. I will be selling off all the Dell stuff, probably for your scrap prices, since they eat power like no tomorrow.

I'm going to run with the USB and 1gb interconnect for a while till the technology moves on.
