Fractal’s new Define 7 XL has an enormous capacity for hard drives, so it only makes sense to build and deploy a 4K editing NAS to compliment our recently built 4K editing workstation. For about $1000(not including the drives) you can build up this system and add up to 20 drives, like Segate’s Iron Wolf Pro line. Using Unraid or ProxMox you’ll be able to manage your data effectively.

I tried various configurations in regards to having a server tower with internal storage. The problem was that the drives would randomly disconnect, causing Windows to freeze and I lose data. The only thing that worked for me that was a stable enough solution was utilizing external USB storage units that can fit up to 8 hard drives. I just made sure they were USB 3 to utilize the speed capabilities.

For those attempting a zfs build at home ignore Linus's warning about raid cards and his recommendation for hba. You probably do want want a raid card, but make sure its IT mode (passthrough). These are cheaply/widely available, and work great with zfs.

Building up my Meshify 2 XL and came back here for ideas… YOU HAVE NO EXHAUST FANS!!! 😆
Also it's closer to 300 dollars, when you add all HDD trays. Only 2 out of 12 are included in the box.

  23. @esunisen3862

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

I would have used a 3U rackmount case with a 16 SAS drives backplane. Much better airflow.

    Or maybe a Inter-Tech 4424, 24 drives in 4U.

I'm building a very similar system in the regular Define 7. ROMED8-2T MB with Epyc 7302P. 6 x 12TB HDD in zfs RAIDZ2. 128 GB ECC RAM (32 x 4) using TrueNAS Scale. I have 2 x 1TB NVME M2 drives and a 2 TB Samsung SSD. Do you recommend running TrueNAS scale in Proxmox or bare metal? I want to rune a NAS and a plex server.

  29. @runeseeker993

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

can you guys test the 20 drives thermals while all panels closed? i've noticed in some cases the hdd's get entirely beyond spec heating in normal circumstances and that's with 4 of them in a 011 dynamic xl with full fan setup, required 2 fans on the back to pull air through to keep them under spec levels. I would love to do this setup myself but feel 20 drives would thermal out entirely to breaking levels.

  30. @mpxz999

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

That guy who took your water bottle. Watch out for him.
    He's up to no good!

  31. @reykeef

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

Hey linus, thank for the video. Could you do another video for a DIY NAS for under $500 for people looking to get their first setup? Not everyone can afford $1000 so I think that would be really useful. I would ideally like to have 10gbe and the ability to edit 4k footage. Also I'm using a 2017 imac so something that works for that would be perfect. I'm also trying to work out what software is compatible/best for macs as most info I'm finding is for windows users. Any recommendations or help would be appreciated.

  32. @HughTube-t6l

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

What is this case? Is there another/newer (fractal) that can contain 20 drives?

  33. @BoraHorzaGobuchul

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

Since when Seagates are ideal? It's the Ultrastars, at least as far as afr is concerned. Unless you consider the recent "double-headed" Seagates.

  34. @BoraHorzaGobuchul

3x raidz1 with fat drives. Great idea. Grrreat.

  35. @FreightFox

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

I am building a NAS in same 7XL case. I am using 24TB HDD's and 32 of 8 TB M.2. Plus some 8 TB SSD's. I am ofc using it on a Threadripper 5975WX. On a Asus Pro WS WRX80 SAGE SE WIFI II board. And a total of 256 GB of RAM.

I love unraid and the ease of use 👍

  37. @Eihrister

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

Regarding the ECC memory, that's simply not true. It's a bit of a myth. For non-ZFS filesystems it's definitely a must, for ZFS not so much!

  38. @DR0CK

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

Each of those 16tb drives also about $500. Linus probably got a bulk deal though

  40. @srenjensen1333

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

Any of you know the story behind that case ? , a guy who makes vids on youtube and is a big fan of actually working pc´s wanted to build a pc (like me) with blu-ray drive, hd´s and other good stuff. Now it turns out that most cases u can buy can´t hold both hdd´s , 5 inch drives and other good stuff and at the same time have space to do various good things and look great. So he contacted ??? you guessed it , Fractal. And he asked the question, how come no one makes good cases with space for all these things ?. And Fractal, totally pro, made that case. I bought it and can tell u all it rocks. Even if Linus gets confused building it all it takes is a little 2+2=4 and thats it. Air flow is great also , just, fyi.

  41. @Obi1kenobi10

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

imangin how many drives you would have if you used Icydock. I have one, its 6 2.5" drives per 5 1/4 bay.

Just bought this case. Remember to print the wheel mounts if you're going to load it up with drives.

  44. @tristanb.8561

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

And how do you get power to all the drives? I don't see that anywhere. And I haven't found a power supply that has so many connections for HDDs.

  45. @StenIsaksson

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

So 1000 dollars doesn't include the drives. 20 IronWolf Pro 16TB will cost you another 8000 dollars

  46. @Onkel-Stevo

so can a person have say a 200tb set up and not only use it for mass storage but can also use it as a plex server as long as i have a gpu on the board also.

  49. @makodaniel4885

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

How about when your runnign plex and 6 people are streaming at once with those 7200 rpm drives hooked up, all devices are watching the same file at different time stamps?

  50. @TheDesignated1

    October 23, 2024 at 2:36 am

Does that HX 750 have enough cables/length to reach all those drives without "custom" cables or SATA splitters? My 7XL will be here next week & I'm running 14 spinners & at least 2 SSDs. I'd rather not have to go the custom cable route if something stock would fulfill the need.
