Save Money Buying Used Servers (Part 1) – Getting started with used servers out of the box
Bob Pellerin (CTOBOB) covers what to do when you just bought your first used server. A lot of people have asked the proverbial “now what?” after opening the box. Bob discusses what to do first before you install the Operating System, such as VMWare ESXi on the server.
Want an AI to declutter your emails? Try Sanebox free: https://try.sanebox.com/dmhu2new7a5s
Reasons for buying used are easy. You save money if you don’t need the very latest technology or the very best processing throughput. In many cases, you will get more (Processing power, memory, drives) for your money.
General recommendations:
* Get something that is not too old. Operating Systems like VMWare ESXi prevent using older processors and systems. This will affect you if this is for a production environment and it will limit the usability down the road.
* Buy new SSDs. The processors and the RAM can be used, but we generally only use SSDs (SATA, SAS, NVMe drives) that are new or that we know have not been worn out. Remember it’s your data that counts in the end.
* Buy a brand that continues to provide firmware updates for their products without having to pay for extended support or having to open a service ticket and waste a whole lot of time.
* If this is going to end up in production, consider getting the remote management module. It’s most likely very inexpensive with the used server.
* If this is going to end up in production, get a higher-end RAID controller. This will save a lot of time and provide a much better experience. The base model can be really slow in a degraded RAID situation.
* Get TPM 2.0 if that’s an option. You’ll thank me in the future. 🙂
Be sure to check out the VMware ESXi installation videos Bob did previously on a variety of server brands and models.

I plan on doing up a home server soon. While it may be old, my Cooler Master Cosmos II is gonna be perfect for what I need. Plenty of storage options, plenty of fan mounts for cooling and proper E-ATX support. All within a durable and well-designed chassis.

Im using a define r6 atm for my home server (fractal). i have been tempted to upgrade to the r7 XL, but this looks interesting too. great video!

October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
Really like this chasis. I've been looking for a multi-function case that gives flexibility, this seems to check alot of boxes. I also bought the rosewill rackmount like your own server, but its really not great once you start trying to vertically mount it etc… This might be something i keep an eye out for in the near term to rebuild/build a new server on it.

October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
This is my next case. I am running a Corsair 5000D Airflow now thats 18 months old and in no rush to upgrade but in 2 or 3 years when the upgrade bug kicks in, I will be using this case. of course that's 2-3 years of new cases and trends to see where we go.
Also, I am probably the only one here that misses 5 1/4 bays for optical drives lol.
@robertrussell203
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
I want to see a Hardline build in this.
@lordzeloxy9513
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
You actually can put the 4 bays on the bottom like he shows, the attachment point is just on the left side of the case under where you're motherboard would be. That allows you to keep the plastic covers for the ssd's or to get more slots and store 8 more 3.5" drives on the side. Up to 12 3.5" drives.
@pixelsafoison
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
Not going to lie, I was pretty excited at the whole "this case can be used for server applications" – but the drive count for such a large case (as well as the cheap mounts) only become worse when you realize that … Well … This isn't even the kind of case where you can go Frankenstein and bolt a secondary card like a mini pc running a N100 or a secondary board sporting a low power GPU or anything else .. because there's a serious lack of meat. Sure, you could design and 3D print a lot of things for this case, but once again: not a lot of meat to bolt things onto. So the only server application I can see for this particular case is one CPU for a small family with GPU passthrough alongside LXCs and VMs with a decent Nas. But not much more than that, there's no "jank to exploit" if I'm making any sense here.
@momay69

Phanteks cases have nice features but thin flimsy metal. The front plastic clips are so brittle. The mounting clips breaks no matter how careful you are.

Will we ever return back the time when we have a simple pc case with solid side panel and front power button
@olegvorkunov5400
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
I would not touch that case even if it is given me for free.
At minute 4.00 I already rejected it as a server rack. There are no 5.25 slots where I can put 2.5 hot-swappable enclosures. I have a simple server rack with two 5.25 slots four 3.5 SAS backplate hot-swappable slots and one floppy slot where I have 18 ssds and 4 spinning HDs in total.
5.25 slots hosts two icydock 8 disk enclosures, floppy slot hosts icydock 2 SSD enclosure. That server running on Threadripper with 128GB RAM, under Hyper-V running Web Server, Database Server, Application Server, and Firewall (pfSense) using 2 LSI 8 port RAID cards with included 8 port motherboard SSD ports.
I use the case similar to this (older model): CSE-732D4-903B Supermicro Mid-tower 900W 80Plus 4×3.5inch

@leosthrivwithautism

I use a Corsair 4000d airflow for my main PC. And I use a 5000d airflow for my storage server. It’s a not a true NAS. It’s running windows with shared drives that works for a just a very basic home sudo server.
But the 5000d gives me ample storage. Not as much as the case featured here. But enough for my needs. Running 2 nvme’s, 2 usb drives, 2 3.5 Sata drives, and 3 2.5 sata drives. So 9 storage devices all together with many terabytes of storage space.
Used mainly for holding my videos I create for my channel. And I my main pc 2 3.5 drives, 1 2.5 ssd. And 3 nvme’s.
Creating videos eats up storage really quick!
@KingtmacXX92
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
take elements from this into consideration for your new JayzTwoCents case design. It doesn't need to have elements of a server case because you lean towards water cooling, but there is always cool features in these style of cases.
@Cleofizoid
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
Remove the front door if access is a problem?
Would've been great actually installing components in different arrangements to give the viewers a much better idea and examoles of how to use this chassis as a home server.
@taesssi
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
It's funny it's called a server tower, yet this is just the size of a full tower.
Back when I built individual servers, a server tower was much larger than this. Of course this was before ssd's.
Heck my tower in using for my gaming rig is bigger than this.
@drpainjourney
October 1, 2024 at 7:06 pm
Super-duper stuff, I got an Enthoo 2 Tower also, not server ed. But NOW I am going to order this for my…. tada server build!! FINALLY, a chassis without those freaking annoying glass door, so sick and tired of all that RGB lights, I don't need it, nor I don't want it! I want silence and no light 🙂
