Cool build. My home build server is over two times the machine. It has dual CPUs, 12 cores, and 24 threads. 96 gigs of ram. 18 hard drives with space for 12 more. The major issue is not the power. It costs 45 dollars a month for electricity. The problem is the heat. It sucks when you have to turn on the AC when it is only 50 degrees F outside. On top of that, rack-mounted hardware sucks in a house. I am building a new NAS/VM server. It is going to be way more power efficient and small form factor.

I use a Dell PowerEdge T710 with 2x Intel Xeon 5500 CPU's, with 288GB RAM, and 8x 8TB Sata drives, and 2x redundant PSU's, 7 of the drives are set at RAID 5, using the Dell's internal Perc Controller software, and 1 standalone for the OS, the OS is headless Ubuntu Server, utilizing SAMBA for file sharing on the network, I don't need it to be a NAS, as Ubuntu Server does just as good using SAMBA shares, then I just create folders on the server for things like documents, pics, music, images, and video, and create Windows shares to those folders, and all I do then is to use the 'Network' icon in windows to map a drive letter to those shares and voila, windows explorer sees those mapped drives and I can just copy over the entire contents of my Documents, Videos, Music, and Images folders from Windows to each of those drive letters, and when saving from an application, I just browse to the right folder and save to it.

I was lucky that I advertised on freecycle for servers, working or not, and obtained the Dell server for free, and it had everything there but the HD's, it even has a working tape drive, but I don't have any tapes for it.

So, my question is, why did this person in the video spend something like $1500 for a NAS to build? When there are other servers out there, that can be got either for a few $100 or free, and that would be needed would be the HD's.

And, why use it as a NAS, unless you're in a huge company, and everyone has a portion of the NAS for their backups, but as an individual, a NAS isn't necessary, whereas Ubuntu Server with SAMBA works just as efficient as a NAS.

How about SAN for virtualization storage?

This seems like a good idea for anyone that likes watching youtube videos, but will never build this themselves or actually run this at home.

If you're trying to cut costs. Use the external drive cages, don't run them all 24/h. Don't buy a huge bulky whining old server for shit like this, you don't want it at home.
If you're trying to setup an actual storage server, don't skimp out on enterprise drives. And don't skimp out on the anti vibration. There is a reason enterprise hdds are higher initial cost. Because it's literally cheaper in the long run, will cause less issues, and even add functionality to ensure less data corruption.

well Chia is dead so there are plenty of cheap drives out there 😆

Throw a 10gb Mellanox card in there and this would be a perfect setup. I would use different drives, but nice job.

Oh wow. That was the very same motherboard I bought in my 1st RAID server build. I ended up installing the Tyan mobo (Tyan S5512WGM2NR) in a 24 bay Norco case yes it only has 14 ports (6 sata and 8 SAS – LSI embedded 9211 SAS controller) I just connect it up a 28 port HP SAS expander. Not a bad mobo – up to 32G ECC

    October 11, 2024 at 3:10 pm

This video is almost an oxymoron. It's titled "Budget Storage Server", but then you go on to say that you spent at least $125 dollars for each of your ten 80TB of Seagate storage which alone came out to at least $1,250 + the additional $300 in other parts with a total of $1,500. Then you have plenty of other people making NAS servers for under 10x the amount you spent.🤦🏻‍♂🤦🏻‍♂

You could get the drives out quicker if you just hit the enclosure off the ground. That will open the case. Pro tip.

Hi that was so handsome… Can I get a second hand from please…

  27. @yourrmomwasepic

    October 11, 2024 at 3:10 pm

This is the same HDD I use for my files which I also took from the enclosure but I did not care about the enclosure its self & believe it or not I didn't damage it using a straight screwdriver but I tossed it after as I had no use for it. I kept the mounting connector though as its useful. They are good drives.

12:43 it is not overstatement it has to do with the way we see tb bc you can see it as powers of 2 or powers of 10. Search it ok yt for a better explanation bc this is saying it very simple.

  37. @UKsystems

    October 11, 2024 at 3:10 pm

remember you have to really build three servers to ensure that your data is kept safely and use ssds in one

  38. @johnb8440

    October 11, 2024 at 3:10 pm

I think I would have bought recertified drives instead.

  39. @Mack_Dingo

    October 11, 2024 at 3:10 pm

Ah yes I thought I was the only ones who noticed the "built a NAS for $300" etc., pulling out $10k of drives" Fk I hates those lol. I was thinking one of those Chinese branded itx with the copper slug mounted with a mobile i7/R9 cpu. mounted in an in a 8bay. Dream would be 8 PM-7R's utilizing aic's and a good nic. I'd probably start with x4 8TB hdd's tho.

  40. @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena

    October 11, 2024 at 3:10 pm

I did not know i could crack open my external sea gate HDD and use it as a internal one for my PC. Well considering how cheap they are i might just get another 8TB drive and use it as redundancy so i can have a mini server to install my games onto, before you ask these are old singleplayer games mostly my GOG library so load times i don't care much about otherwise yes i would use a SSD instead. For the multiplayer games i actually use my SSD as then load times matter as i don't wanna take too long to load into a game of league of legends or any other moba

Without lying, how many have died in 3 years? My failure rate with barracudas is like 50% per 3 years 😮😮
