Comparing a 5400 RPM to a 7200 RPM? A 7200 RPM drive is always going to be more expensive.

Matt, strange question, The Mat you did the build on, where did you get it? Been looking for one of them for years, and can never find one here in Australia. Thanks.

10gbps networking will be wasted if you dont have fiber channel SANs with hardware raid cards

great video, you should put front fans for the hdd to impruve the temperatures. bless

FYI, shucking isn’t always the cheapest option. For me, there are 20 TB or 22 TB drives around for ~15 CHF per TB, which is about the same as your drives cost/TB. So with for of those do a RAID 10 and be golden as well.

The use of old workstation boards is interesting as there are so many to be had on ebay – it looks as though the Dell workstations are more proprietary, but good to see that the HP boards might follow some standards – i'll take a look at some of those.

    what is that huge case?

  20. @MrGoMario

    September 30, 2024 at 11:50 am

With such a slow processor you should have gone with XigmaNas instead of the more demanding TrueNas. But than again, the user interface is more consumer friendly in TrueNas… You don't even have to know what FreeBSD and ZFS is 😅…

I have the exact same case in my basement for close to 10 years, with my i7 4770 in there. I think I know what my next project is now.

Good improvements over v1. Still shucked drives though 🙁 you managed to get lucky this time. one drive dies and there goes your savings due to no warranty, having that many drives you can't rule out three chance of an early drive death

  25. @MartinMouronte-yi5xl

    September 30, 2024 at 11:50 am

hi. maybe is cheaper, because thous disk are 5400RPM, vs the 7200RPM you saw online.

I considered things like True NAS and UnRAID a while ago. Then I started looking at things like FlashRAID which no longer exists. OpenMediaVault still misses the mark for me. Finally leaning towards doing something like SnapRAID with CRON jobs, Syncthing and MergerFS, or something like RockStor. If I was more adventurous maybe something like DragonFly BSD with HAMMER2.

  30. @tristanb.8561

    September 30, 2024 at 11:50 am

And how do you get power to all the drives? I don't see that anywhere. And I haven't found a power supply that has so many connections for HDDs.

I think if you wanted to upgrade the Ethernet or the network connection, you could use the 16x lanes to an adapter to a 10 gig net. Idk I’m just spitballing

I wonder, where do you "backup" 84TB to? You mentioned "separate external drive". 84TB external drive or another NAS as a backup? 🙂

Price “point”. Use “case”. The words point and case are not necessary. No one spoke like that before a few years ago. Please stop using unnecessary words. They add nothing to the meaning.
