Building a Desktop Case for a Rackmount Server | Proof of Concept | Part 1

Building a Desktop Case for a Rackmount Server | Proof of Concept | Part 1

You can get an extremely powerful rackmount server for dirt cheap off eBay. A 40 core 80 thread machine will cost you about $500 USD. Though this sounds like an incredible deal, most people will still shy away from these bargain behemoths and instead build something with a fraction of the power for the same price.

I think one of the main reason mainstream consumers tend to stay away from enterprise servers mainly has to do with their form factor. Chances are, you don’t have a server rack at home and you don’t want to buy a desktop rack because they look terrible. Today, we are going to try to solve this issue by building a wooden case to house this HP ProLiant in.

A big thanks to PC Server and Parts for sending us this server for the project. Show them some love by visiting their website and checking them out on Facebook!

With all do respect, and I mean all do, server are very pipertary with their connections especially power supplies. hardware raid is better than software raid. Servers are really not meant to throw video cards in, while you can do it they make special gpus for vdi, along with you can do virtualization with servers spin up many vms using esxi or hyper v, I really enjoy your videos man and projects but there is so much more you can do with this server. You’re best bang for buck is really going and getting a workstation for what your looking to do.

I think the main reasons why people don't go for these for home use is because
a.) Single-core performance on these is not that good, since they're made to run server software in VMs (web servers, e-mail servers, databases, etc.) which don't require a lot of CPU
b.) They're very power-hungry, so expect your electricity bills to double

nice build coming along here. Just gained a new sub.
I actually quite like how well that wood turned out once stained. As for the drill holes I see some others have already said this, they wasn't wood bits and someone else suggested to put scrap wood under and above to reduce the burr. 1 other thing you should really do is slightly smaller pilot holes then go through with the size you actually want, while drilling this gives the material room to move a little there for wont force itself up od down so much causing the damage. Just another tip for the future 😉

I would build a wooden case from whitish 1cm-2cm thick wood. Starting with at least 6 big square rubber feet, then the base with some 5mm holes, then 4 side pieces for back, left, right, and front panels, these panels being screwed to each other and to the bottom, the back having 1 or 2 square holes where would fit 12cm fans, then an hole for power cable and another hole for lan/vga/other cables, maybe not holes but square cuts from top backside to allow cables to be added without effort and a rubber square block to make cables get still. The top side would have same dimensions as bottom and having 4 screws to tight it to lateral sides. Top of bottom base would have thick rubber pads to avoid vibrations, and some other stuff. and yet… some varnish finish and the AA logo at top.

Are you sure you wouldn't rather just purchase a small rack that could fit under or next to a table? I see a StarTech 8U 2-post Rack on Amazon for $34 right now. You'll also need to buy either 2-post rails for the server or at least a rack shelf to support it, and hopefully those will come with enough cage nuts and screws, but that sounds like a far better option to me.

I bought a Dell PowerEdge R810 from eBay with 2 10 Core Xeons and 128GB RAM for £450 ($580). I installed Windows 10 Pro which gave me one problem, the Dell website only has drivers for Windows Server for the onboard Ethernet. I installed an Ethernet card to resolve that issue. I also installed a GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card but I cannot configure it to use the card during POST so I have to use a monitor plugged into the onboard VGA port but once it loads Windows I have it set to use the monitor on the graphics card as the only display.

Talk about the heat and power usage on those old old servers. Plus the expensive shipping. I don’t do any 1U server (only for low power appliances like a firewall), as they are too loud with the small fans.

That metal ends you cutoff is the faceplate of the 1U chassis, it screws into the rack and prevents the chassis from sliding all the back into rack frame when mounted on to the rack rails, like a drawer for a cabinet.

I would love this to be in a isolated box, with water cooling on the cpu's with the rads mounted on the outside..
Would work best with a 2u or 3u case with noctua fans for minimal airflow inside.. while you're at it.. screw the whole thing under your desk and there u go.. a silent server grade pc (i would use the many cores as a streaming pc or game server etc..)

Great video.. (Although if I were you i would save myself alot of time just buying wood wich do not require sanding)

I watched this hoping you would try to rearrange the case components into a "tower case" if you will–albeit custom design. Your masking of the server's case is nice so I appreciate your desire to make "office friendly." I would like to remind folks that these servers have millions of dollars in development put into airflow so any front or rear coverings may cause unwanted hot spots inside. This causes the fans to increase RPM which in turn generates the unwanted noise.

I recently purchased a 1U and 2U server–one Dell and one HP (HP Enterprise). I purposely went into the BIOS to set everything I could to power saving and reduced fan speed. I'm sure the temptation is to always set these to highest performance but consider these servers lived a life of high performance databases with multiple users. Unless you are replicating this it is doubtful you will ever drive these machines near their 100% capacity.

If you shop carefully you will notice variants of each model (mine being the R720 and DL360p respectfully). Power supply options exist for many models where some easily go above 1,000 watts–that's a lot of power and your energy bill will reflect that. I have found that all the slots work very similar to desktop PC's. The memory is usually ECC which is an enterprise function. The cost of used memory makes up for this though in most cases versus leading edge PC memory. I watch for units with open memory slots is the memory is low (less than 48 GB) because some of these are maxed out with @GB DIMMs so your only option is to replace most or all. Another strategy is to buy a high memory unit (128GB+) so you shouldn't need to address this at all.

I would love to see someone try to "re-package" the internals to a office style desktop/stand-up server chassis. But, this is a ton of work…

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
