Building Four Servers in One Day!

Huge thanks to Linode for bringing you this video. Wanting your own personal cloud services, but don’t have the time, money, or space to set up your own server rack? Let Linode host them for you! Visit https://linode.com/CraftComputing and get a $100 60-Day credit just for signing up.

One virtualization server in your homelab is great. But do you know what’s better? FOUR servers! My server rack is getting quite the makeover today, as I add in four new servers for better redundancy and backups.

But first… What am I drinking???

From Kettel Beerworks, it’s the Velvet Panda Oatmeal Stout (5.5%). I sit squarely with Ron Swanson on this one… Any Stout under 9% is a Porter, and Porters are pointless. Where oatmeal stouts are usually served with a spoon, this is thin and pretty unremarkable. 2/5.

a true men of culture knows that the best thermal paste pattern is the D shape ! it reduces average temps by 69% and gives a performance uplift of at least 42% with similar power consumption !

I would also like to know power consumption info on this. How does it compare to say an r710?

    October 28, 2024 at 6:18 pm

"Pretty modest budget" yeah except those SSDs. Each one of those was something like $600 in their heyday and still ran over $150 used at the time this was filmed. Price-y…

Can you and Linus do some sort of server collab please?

  26. @skatar01887

    October 28, 2024 at 6:18 pm

As for the wrong HDDs shit happens all the time when not paying attention to the details.
Work for HPE & some of the build configurations we get are horrendous, due to the fact that sales keep going around the engineering configurator.
Which in turn keeps the customer from getting what they want when they need it. (great system) It usually takes an engineer to contact the customer to straighten it all out

how the heck do i get the IPMI working? the sticker on the board only has one string, is that the password? you have other vids, but no one has a straight up "set this up " for dummies.

  32. @mattelder1971

    October 28, 2024 at 6:18 pm

I'll never understand why manufacturers put SATA ports on the opposite side of the motherboard from where the drive bays are going to be.

  33. @keithwoodie8060

    October 28, 2024 at 6:18 pm

So I know this video is old but I was wondering if your nvme pcie low profile riser is still working? By the way thank you for this video.

  34. @garfield12344

    October 28, 2024 at 6:18 pm

I see in those 3 identical servers you already have a routed under fans blue SATA cable… You could use that too and a new one for each or move one into a machine so 2 identical cables and in on 2 new cables and 3rd one original sata and a new cable… For cable management…🤔💭😇👀 On HDD support/ vibrationd you could fetch some bluish grey furniture teflon sliding pads 10mm ( for chair's feet) diameter and stick them under HDD either on black region aluminum body or so …. Teflon is heat resistant from HDD …
