If you can believe this, I’ve never built a server before! I’ve used NAS enclosures, sure, but you aren’t actually “building” anything there aside from inserting some hard drives. So I went out and purchased a SilverStone server case with a HDD hot-swap enclosure and assembled an entire server rig for our new home. Come along for the ride!

Love the server build and I give you props in making something so compact and clan. I plan to make my pc I use for my own stuff into a server at some point. So this helped me think of some possible upgrades! Thanks a bunch Greg.

Server isn't Networking. You need to know networking fundamentals if you're doing an advanced setup (hardware or software wise); but building a server is just a headless computer.
Networking you're then talking about Routing, Switching, Firewalls, Load Balancers, Proxies, etc…
I decommissioned all my Dell PowerEdges a few years ago and moved to a single Ryzen based server as well. I built it back in 2021 so its on the older 3950x w/ ASRock Taichi X570, but its perfect for my smaller multipurpose use. It runs as a NAS, a Media Server, home automation and services, and a TestLab (I'm an Engineer and do Server & Cloud support).
Nothing wrong with running consumer hardware, just need to be careful with hardware as sometimes you run into OptionROM conflicts with some boards and HBA cards.
I'd stick with the RAID5 as long as you have a backup plan. I'd recommend a RAID6 over RAID5 rather than a RAID10 as its more expandable if you need to grow the array over time.
You might want to look at a different chassis, instead of consumer brands like Silverstone, look at 4U hotswap chassis, theres plenty of Supermicro copies out there like Innovision with SAS Expansion backplanes, 24-36 hotswap bays, and full E-ATX support for running giant cards if you need to.

Great video. I don't think you need to apologize for your server build. It's your server with your goals in mind. IMHO the only wrong server is the one that doesn't power on. I got tired of desktop external HDD's that failed; so much for an easy backup solution. I decided to build my own server, 4U, rack mounted, with server components. I now have a NAS that's also a Plex media server, using free software, TrueNAS Scale. My hardware is overkill for it's usage; but that's my style. Again, good job building a server for YOUR needs.
@killbot6
October 11, 2024 at 6:43 am
I would add a better nic, like a 10gig.. Just so, local file transfers are a lot faster. DO NOT DO RAID 5, with the size of the drives you are using it would take forever for you to repopulate a drive if one fails. Raid 10 will be better for that.
@stocky9803
October 11, 2024 at 6:43 am
Yeh the silverstone stuff is really nice to work with
I regret not getting one myself for my server – i got this cheaper standup case and the drivebays are rough and just really not satisfying to operate
This looks slick man, good work giving it a crack

ooh, you might be able to get a msi ventus 4070 ti super in there, that's probably your best bet. Otherwise if you really want a bigger graphics card, might I suggest an external Blu-ray drive? If it's something you really aren't going to use often anyway but like having the option, an external drive gives you placement options and frees up that space for a gpu.

Don't feel bad bro, I work in Telecommunications I do networking daily and I say all the time, "I am the computer guy in 2024", from data cabling / fiber all the way to the rack server and even installing the rack itself, I do it all and have changed out or upgraded it all. But I had never actually built an entire server or PC until 2019, when I got into gaming in my spare time. I'm positive I could build a server, even though I've never built an entire server system before, those get built by Walker or Granite, the companies I sub contract for. Would be cool to go install an entire network in a place and use a server I also built.

I did the Sunshine/Moonlight for awhile but ended up running powered fiber HDMI cables, paired with powered usb 3.0 extension cables, from my server to 4 different rooms throughout my home. Absolutely ZERO latency now and no issues with different VLANs and other security settings introducing more lag on top of what minimal amount comes with using Sunshine/Moonlight. Probably wouldn’t be an issue if I weren’t trying to play FPS’s at Max Quality settings; thus most people could probably get by without the added hassle of install and cost of cables.
