Hello, what country are you in? There are too many good components to upgrade your computer. In Vietnam, most of them use Chinese products. Although it is cheap, it breaks down very quickly.

thank you, and Very informative mate. by the way i just pickup the R320 and wondering the CPU reading between 65-72c (on idrac) at fan speed 15% (i set static ) and i only just installed one ESXi 8 with 1 nested esxi 7 and server 2022 VM is that too high? as i have HP DL 360 Gen9 and it's running 4 nested esxi 7 and i can see in the ILO4 CPU reading around 40-50 C

Great video. This made me happier with the Precision Workstations and Optiplexes in my home lab from a noise/heat/power standpoint. They don't have hot swap drives or power supplies (unless you add 3rd party sata bays and controllers), but they're great for my needs and I don't mind downtime if I ever do need to replace a power supply or drive. And for additional data durability – zfs replication between machines, proxmox backup server, etc.

A proper set of hot swap drives on the front of the chassis would be nice though.

3 months, somebody gave me a Dell PowerEdge R210 II with 16Gb RAM. Before that, I was simply sharing 3 PCs via a 5 port ethernet switch. After installing Ubuntu server, NextCloud, I'm hooked. Just this week, I ended up getting a Dell PowerEdge T410 with a single 6 core CPU and 32Gb RAM for A$50 (Around $34 US) and a Dell PowerEdge R620 with 2 CPUs and 88Gb RAM for A$160 (Around $105 US).

i have bought a r630 with a h330 controller, idrac8 enterprise, 2 xeon e5 2699v4, x8 32gb 2133 LRDIM and 2 sas 1.2tb drives with an activated windows server 20 on it but i wont using windows so i dont care abut it. but i got it for only 600€ .
i bought another 8 2.5inch sas drives with 1.8tb and 6 additional caddys because mine came with only 2 and 6 blacks and my version has only 8 drive bays and a multidrive dvd in the front.
also bought more ram from the same type so i had in the end the full 768gb ram i needed and 14tb disks space. i needed this system for heavy analytic calculations. i need minimum 10tb fast disk sapce and a raid array with all 8 drives and reading only sequential was fast enough to feed all 44cores. but to reach the full potential of the system i need more ram and faster ram but if 2666mhz and 1.5tb ram would make really a difference i cant really tell. on paper i maybe 10% faster. my limiting factor is really ram speed and timings. if a had a system with more ram channels i could easily top out the cpu but in this system 70% utilization per thread is the limit for now. my operating system with the program and run configurations is on a usb3 drive the drives 8 drives itself holding only the dataset thats needed for the program and all data thats generated is saved on my usb3 drive.
at first i hock up my usb with the os then i plugin my external 20tb hdd over another usb3 then i run a program thats writing all the data the right order to the disk array after this is done i check for errors and then i run my program. loading all data to the array and checking for errors takes around 20h after this is done i ran my program and this needs about 5h and in the end i have a 10gb file of processed and formatted data. i had this one in the past with a ryzen9 5950x and 64gb 3600mhz ram. i had not to write the data first that saved me 20h but the run it self took over 70h. first at all i needed this pc to do other stuff but i cant use it in that time and second it consumed way more power as the r630 does for the same dataset of 10tb. the main limiting faktor was the drives and the fact i had to do software raid instead. this consumed cpu power and ram usage so i had to work with smaller chunks per core.
i have tried sata ssd instead of sas drives in the r630 but this was way worse even the response time was better way better but using ssd sas drives to get some more performance are to expensive for only a uplift of 3% or so even buying used drives is expensive. a used sas 2.5 inch hdd with 1.8tb cost around 200€ each a sas ssd are around 600€ each so this would be a no brainier buying a ssd. if you consider i dont make money whit this stuff it is done for a project of the maker sapce i am in and i do this because i have the knowledge and the hardware to so so also this is something that brings me a challenge and joy. i have fun doing this and i learn something every time. my personal things and stuff i do at works is for the most part repetitive and boring.
i have payed in the end 1600€ for the r630 with all its upgrades. i do get money from my mates at this project to cover some of the costs i had and have but i have never ask for it. and a total of around 20€ a month i get from them does only cover the energy thats being used by the system but this is ok im fine even without.
i do this for fun not for money ^^

the reason why i watch this i may planning to sell my machine and buy a bigger one because i had never informed my about the options and bought the cheapest one i could find with the biggest cpu. so the r630 was cheap and has a lot of compute power but later on i found some things that holding the real potential power of the machine back also some other limiting factors like the 1.8tb per drive.

Found this video too… do you have a discord? My r320 is way louder than my r330, but its temp are cold – I'm interesting in learning to tune with immu (sp?). Also, I wonder about ZFS and IT mode.

    Shameless plug;
If anyone wants to donate a c series poweredge server so I can set up an ai that people don't have to sign up for (we'll do locally saved conversations, I don't want your chat data, or any data for that matter) feel free to reach out 🙂
I have an r620 (just prefer dell, personally) but dont think its up to the task 😅😅

Also, if anyone wants to just like, talk about it or join in, feel free as well 🙂 I'm new to it all, but do have a functional local ai (Llama 3.1 with ollama with pinokio), and love learning more

I'm not an expert. For a few years I have a Dell T710 and a Dell T410 running using Proxmox. I do not understand why ZFS is a problem with the Perc raid controllers. I have on both servers the storage disks in ZFS. I did twice a hot swap on the R710 on a failing disk and (cold) swap failing drive on the T410 without any issues. Performance on both servers is Ok.

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
