Dell EMC PowerEdge T40 Review A Cheap Server
Check out the STH main site review here: https://www.servethehome.com/dell-emc-poweredge-t40-review-cheap-server/
In our Dell EMC PowerEdge T40 review, we see why this ultra-cheap server can provide a lot of value for those prioritizing cost over features. This server has gone on sale several times for $349 and at that price, it can be a great value. In our review, we take a look at some of the unique features like the PCI slot and DVD RW ODD, and some of the big trade-offs made to get prices that low. This server has the Intel Xeon E-2224G onboard which can be $213 alone making it an extreme value for a well-built server/ workstation platform.
If you were thinking about this server for your home lab, office, or a client, we have a bunch of fun tidbits and perspective.

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)
In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math
Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.

Optical drive is very important.
Some tech company wants to keep workstations out of network and use CAD to design something or backup daily updates which
no one can create them back or take very long time, they use DVDs to store them, since the tape drive is no longer fast or capable.
Please keep an optical drive for these purposes, I beg.

Delightful! Minute 3: the T40 Quick Start Guide. I had to laugh aloud! I have now the 5820 Xeon Workstation, and the Quick Start Guide is also the "Dell Hardware Users Manual Standard":
Plug in that power cord!
Press the button!
You done, already runs that big workstation with all these carriers, boards and mysterious features on the motherboard. Of course I failed the IQ test and failed to remove the bezel to the hard drive bays. I had to call Dell, open a "customer service case." The solution was simple really: To protect the bays from access one needs to open the side panel and press a hardware unlock button located inside. Hm… that would be an item for the Quick Start Guide, I would think. Later I failed to remove the 2.5" drive spacer from the HDD carrier. That thing is like a puzzle of sorts, I did not wanted to break anything and opened another Dell support case. My body showed me around 11pm on zoom session how to do that. I am sure that T40 guide has a similar list of misses and faults.

October 14, 2024 at 3:24 am
You explained well what Dell T40 is all about. But you are really downplaying this only thinking of the actual hardware and comparing it to expensive systems. Last 8yrs years, I have set up over 125, Dell T20, T30, T40 Servers in small businesses (Medical, Dental centres, small offices, etc). These businesses need small servers for their client-server software. They NEVER EVER fail. Run 24×7 for last so many years. I only did change harddisks to SSDs. Has Intel KVM (vPro) backend access too (similar to iDRAC). Yes, they are not German Mercedes grade but maybe reliable/vale for money Toyota level. I have used very expensive big Dell Serves in my last job. Trust me, they fail too – big expensive failures. So for small business without very heavy processing, these are extremely reliable and value for money systems.

@hburke7799
October 14, 2024 at 3:24 am
these Precision rebranded PowerEdge's have given me a bad taste in my (used) experience setting them up for clients..
A T30 has 4 HDD bays, and it had an M.2 slot from being based on a Precision Board, but Dell disabled it via bios updates (Major dick move imho). but it at least had 4 HDD bays which I consider the minimum to be useful (even if you use a mirror/raid1, what are you going to do when you want to migrate to bigger disks?)
this T40 seems like it continues the trend of slapping names onto boxes without any regard to actual use.
@averagedev7768
October 14, 2024 at 3:24 am
I secured a job in my last graduation semester. What i learned is during upgrades u usually want to do theme in steps. So having that PCI slot in the T40 helped quite a lot in our case with the serial card used for the phone relay we have. I use this server daily as a workstation (yeah), reason i do it is bc i never turn it off, it runs windows 10 and i can always remote desktop into it

Hello ServeTheHome, we currently have this server in our small home office with the same specifications. 8gb RAM, 1TB HDD. Currently we just use it for file sharing. File sharing can be done very nicely with a NAS. I'd appreciate if you tell me any other role to add to this server as it is without breaking it? Thanks

what's a good mini server to use for my lab to run ESXI or Proxmox to run Networking Labs. Something on the affordable end…
@matthewrease2376
October 14, 2024 at 3:24 am
So, in theory, could you use two 32GB DIMMs to reach 64 GB while keeping the max memory speed of 2666 MT/s, instead of four 16GB DIMMs (which I assume would run slower)?
