Thanks for the helpful hints to have the proper tool, captain obvious 🥲 if I had a tool for it I probably wouldn’t need much of a tip, and FYI my little bitch ass hands are softer than yours could ever be 🤧

We bought some new switches yesterday and I was getting my butt kicked trying to install those stupid cage nuts like always. I decided it was time to Google "how to install cage nuts without smashing your hand" and this was the first video that popped up. When I heard you say, "the correct way is to find one of these little cage nut pullers", I was about to skip the video because who has some specific cage nut installer tool? Then I remembered this weird piece of bent metal that has been sitting on top of my server rack since I started this job 6 years ago. I'm not sure if it was divine intervention or my hoarder tendencies but I never threw that thing away after multiple server room redesigns and deep cleans. Sure enough I slipped that bad boy in there and was able to pop the cage nut in the first try in half a second. That little bent piece of metal now lives in my main toolkit and will never leave.

Wish I had one of these a week ago. Had to make due with a tiny flathead screwdriver. Inserted them the same way as you but not having that little hook made it a pain.

That tool looks like it's just a PCI slot cover from a computer case! Great tip – thank you!

I installed a bunch by hand into my first rack, in the up down orientation because I didn't know any better, and then caused myself to bleed by slipping and taking a cage nut bracket right under the thumb nail. Then I searched and found this and feel like a huge idiot, since my rack came with a tool but I couldn't figure out how to use it since I was installing the nuts up and down instead of left and right. Thank you so much for the quick no nonsense video. Hopefully my only blood sacrifice for this rack.

That's a pretty neat tool, need one of those or a couple. I will say that I've never cut myself using the flathead, I've been cut twice trying to install them by hand. But it really helps to have the right flathead. You need a small, thin one somewhere in between a normal and a precision flat head. I think the one I use is an SL5. Too thick and you'll block the nut from going through, and/or require tons of force. And you want a big enough flat, but not too big, So it won't slip off. You should also never have your fingers in the path of the screwdriver and it's unnecessary. Once one side of the nut is in, use purely the tension of the screwdriver to keep it in, fingers away, and then push and lever it into the hole.

Well I have no tool as described, ,but putting them in as you demonstrated by hand was so easy, as tradesmen say in England, " a piece of piss".
Brilliant. You have saved me a great deal of time and effort and ripped skin. Thank you..

Nice, I did not know. I usually bend the edge of a cheap screwdriver. 👍

Thanks for posting! Wow. That tool looks a lot like a modified slot cover for a PC. I have tons of them!

I install them vertically (I know, I know) but let me explain; once the rack has a large number of appliances it's very difficult to get them out horizontally. I seat half of the cage nut in place bottom-first, I then hold it in place on the front of the rack, that way it's nearly impossible for my flat-head screw driver to ever hit my hand. I then apply downwards-outwards pressure and it pops right into place. This can get tricky since it requires pressure on the front side of the cage nut…and not enough ends up sending it into the bottom of the rack. To make it easier, any J shaped piece of metal can act as a hook to hold the cage nut in place while I pop it in from the back-side.

Oh. I thought "cage nuts" was a Mortal Kombat move.

The cage nuts I got were soft enough that I could push on the block with my thumb to insert or remove them (nowhere near the pinchies). This is two different sets, one came with my $30 Griffin rack, and the other was a set of ECHOGEAR screws (with nylon washers) that came with cage nuts. Maybe it's my guitar fingers. 😁 Your video still showed me how they work, and I had to watch it again because I was about to try and install them with the block on the front side….but something seemed off, so I came back. 😉 Thanks!
