The pinnacle of homelabbers is the home rack. It means you have enough equipment and projects to dedicate an entire room of your house to the hobby. Congratulations, you did it!

But every homelab needs to start somewhere, but even the most humble of setups need a place to live without annoying everyone who lives with you.

Today, we’re building a DIY 8-Bay NAS and Virtualization Server that should be more than enough to run homelab services, and be quiet enough to keep in the house.

Ditch the PCI SATA Controller, buy a bigger M2 drive and use the other slot for a M2 SATA board. Problem solved, Errr… Better.

Klingon with Christian was golden, not having him in the video later was a let down. "I will make it work" = "money pit"

re jumbled letter brands: amazon makes random sellers get a trademark or something. They're trying to outsource seller verification to the us trademark office, which runs super far behind and won't stop trash vendors anyway.

So… likely not a quality psu.

Glad I dodged a bullet skipping this case a few weeks ago. Switched to unas. First tried the 810 and it's layout is atrocious. 810a is on the way and is supposed to be better. The 810 is… Imagine this case, but if they tucked the mb in a gap on the side and left the top cavity completely clear – horrible.

My nas build is going to use an m2 slot with a jmb582-based adapter to get two extra sata ports with a low profile. Here's hoping it works.

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

Damn amazon does really have a jonsbo n4 knock-off

  10. @richard_loosemore

Current price for that mobo: $221.

Was not the fan mount supposed to be mounted the other way around? It really seems bold the design missed out on how to run the fan cabling.

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

the remaining 40w from that power supply is consumed by the onboard space heater

I have never seen any hardware at the prices quoted by Youtubers. Used parts generally sell for more than you're spending for new.

  15. @MajorisMons

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

Would a flexible gen 4 pcie riser not work, to change location/position of the 8 port sata controller?

  16. @MajorisMons

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

Silver stone sales super low profile 90° sata cables.

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

I like the focus on budget and buying used or cheap hardware here, something that so few youtubers seem to do. There's no end of videos with the best of everything and fancy hardware but this is what it's all about – a decent budget build with a purpose 🙂 nice work Jeff

Those erling boards are fine and pretty rock solid. Also, nothing wrong with ES/QS or mobile cpus either, they work great when professionally soldiered to the MB. The only downside with the mobile cpu boards is the cpu is soldiered to the board (no socket) so there's no upgrading it but at the price point that's not really a issue.

Whats the Power Consumption of that System in idle?

  20. @CoreyPL

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

I will be building in Jonsbo N3 probably. 8×3.5 HDD, 1×2.5 SSD, mITX and SFX power supply. I've managed to buy 8x4TB HGST server SATA drives (from DELL servers) for a little less than 100USD. If they pass verification, I will be buying rest of the hardware. I would prefer microATX NAS case, but those are harder to find.

    Get a lsi 9207-8i hba?

  22. @sumosys372

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

For full atx support and an m-atx board, try Fractal Node. 304 for 6 bay, and 804 for 8 bay. both have additional bays available, both use full size atx psu. Also try a CWWK ITX option, with onboard R9 CPU, DDR5 and 9 SATA ports.
Oh, and do you do "proper" pint glasses? 20Oz?? for us in the "Old Country"? If I get a chance I'll send you a beer over!

  23. @woodchipperdelux

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

your using a china board from ali express there is a standard in motherboard post next time don't buy from a fly by night place and you wont be screwed like that again.

  24. @drphibesrises

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

That case is pretty expensive for having such faults.

  25. @stephendee7839

    November 4, 2024 at 6:35 am

I love how you knew that the build was really going to be "around" the case, and then definitely didn't do good enough research on the case to have it work as you envisaged it. IMO, your modification to the build should've started at "replace the case" before you changed up the PSU to a flex-ATX unit.

I would recommend replacing the case with a good one.

@CraftComputing I bought last year the i7-12650H version of this board. Performance is ok, temps are not so great, and it randomly decides to have a kind of blue screen. The CPU pulls 100W constantly, the screen is black, and no input works only a hard power off and on

What is Roblox? ROBLOX is an online virtual playground and workshop, where kids of all ages can safely interact, create, have fun, and learn. It’s unique in that practically everything on ROBLOX is designed and constructed by members of the community. ROBLOX is designed for 13 to 18 year olds, but it is open to people of all ages. Each player starts by choosing an avatar and giving it an identity. They can then explore ROBLOX — interacting with others by chatting, playing games, or collaborating on creative projects. Each player is also given their own piece of undeveloped real estate along with a virtual toolbox with which to design and build anything — be it a navigable skyscraper, a working helicopter, a giant pinball machine, a multiplayer “Capture the Flag” game or some other, yet-to-be-dreamed-up creation. There is no cost for this first plot of virtual land. By participating and by building cool stuff, ROBLOX members can earn specialty badges as well as ROBLOX dollars (“Robux”). In turn, they can shop the online catalog to purchase avatar clothing and accessories as well as premium building materials, interactive components, and working mechanisms.
