As a completely Unifi (ed) household, I can recommend their Dreammachine Pro as Router, their switches and especially the access points. The single pane of glass management just makes it delightful to manage. The controller software (free) can be hosted in a Docker container, btw. Apart from that, I went down that 19“ rack rabbit hole for my home quite some time ago and have a nice 4U AMD Epyc 7282 Unraid Server in my 42U full enclosure rack (which also came in parts, luckily).

Hi Christian, cool project! Looking forward for the rest. In general I would recommend a managed switch that's supports vlan's for a project like this, the unmanaged one you use right now seems like a divestment. And a small correction: 10 Gbps ethernet over fibre is not the same as fibre channel.

I've been watching a lot of your year old videos then I see this one. The camera shot and editing is soooooo good. As a photographer, that opening shot was super tasty. Loved it.
The Vlog style was cool afterwards, just add cam light.
Your desk shot is cool too. I would love if your cam was above your eyeline though.

Good work ^^ i also have a „homelab“ which is an old pc i got for free from my workplace, but i migrated that server into oracle cloud because the energy prices are exploding and this is the best Solution for me.
I also have the same capacity there, but better networking ^^

Hey I need help and suggestion for planning my Home network. I am very interested in the following scenario: I want to set up my home network so that I can access it via a VPN from the Internet (for example hosting a VPN Server) and at the same time I want to route all of my network traffic via a VPN Provider. How is this possible?
So in the Best case I can connect then to my Home network via my self hosted VPN and my traffic to the internet will routed over my Home network and then over the external VPN Provider to the internet even it I am not at home. Then there are a lot of possibilities to secure the home network and all this mechanisms apply to All my devices and to the devices which are connected to my home network via VPN.
I think it should be possible but can someone give my any advises how to achieve this goal?
I would be very thankful!

Just be careful with the storage server – rails are nice but, if your rack is not anchored to the floor, fully loaded server once fully extended on rails can tip the rack. Depending of course how big it is and how the rack is loaded etc. 2U servers often come with a sticker warning not to extend more than one at the time if the rack is on wheels. With 4U ones 1 server can tip the entire thing.

Nice choice in the Startech rack – great for a homelab. I've done some wall-mounts in basements with great success. Also good choice in going for a rack that uses cage nuts instead of threaded holes in the steel – you won't accidentally render an RU useless with a stripped hole. That said, cage nuts are the devil. Get yourself some Rackstuds to replace the cage nuts and screws. Your knuckles will thank you. Yes, there's a tool you can use to pop the cage nuts out, but they're so easy to lose track of, especially at the worst possible moment. You'll use Rackstuds once, then never want to touch a traditional cage nut again, believe me. They're amazingly strong too (something like 400 pounds/180kg of shearing force). Also, I believe someone else mentioned, but don't forget about tip hazard with heavy things on sliding rails.

Chris, why the heck did you get a rack? 😀 yes it's cool but rack mounted servers have the worst airflow and PSUs are super expensive. I stick with my tower. Although for networking the point goes for a rack.
And jau.. lot of storage! What are you storing there? Do we even want to know? 😉

Wenn ich das richtig sehe, steht dein Rack auf dem Dachboden. Durch ständige Temperaturwechsel auf dem Dachboden verringert sich die Lebensdauer deiner HDDs, wollte ich nur mal anmerken.

Lovely build, am planning myself a similar one using Startech.. just havent plonked the money into it getting a Rack.. got a couple of Precisions running as my Hypervisor (VMware workstation tho )..a few Cisco switches for learning networking..
but just curious as to how much you would incur as costs towards running these 24/7 or what strategy do you use for cost optimizations'.. ?

I suppose you are confusing Fiber Channel (that is for Storage / SAN Purposes with Speeds of 4/8/16/32Gbps) with Network Fiber Optics. FC and SFP+ is a total different thing..

Sophos has a free home use license. I ran the Sophos UTM on my own hardware for years. When it was time for me to upgrade the software again I decided to go with Opnsense, but definitely good stuff for small to medium businesses and amazing for home use

I good idea in your location would be use a deep and a shallow rack ontop make most use of the room below you roof. (Dachschräge ausnutzen). Deep servers on the bottom and the shallow patchpanel on top.

The cheapest way to get 10Gigabit is to use SFP+ ports. I thing there is a microtik switch using SFP+ ports

Back in 2012 i built a hyper-v server with the then new storage spaces with SSD cache. Using desktop components (silent) i got 700MB/sec where disks toped out at 100MB/s. At that time a pretty nice poor mans SAN.

I was waiting to see where you were planning to place that rack. That rack might get too heavy for the 2nd story. Make sure that floor is reinforced or at least can handle the load on it.

I wish i had a place to put rack mounted devices in my home. Its small and the noise is to much. I am trying to find desktop server but they are so much more expensive for some reason.

Thanks for this video, the makeshift rack I made out of an old 80's home theater cabinet just fell apart on me, after swearing every word in the book and in some other various languages I started looking up prices for racks before realizing I have no idea what to look for lol.

cute, but it lacks some major things: 1) cable management, 2) recessed rails, 3) lights, and 4) cooling. I won't detail why you need/want each of these – you should already know why if you ARE a networking PROFESSIONAL.

10:30 don't overlook used network hardware. It can still be expensive if you need 10 Gbps, but if you just need gigabit, used enterprise-class managed switches can be picked up very cheaply. I use a couple of HP 1820-24G switches (model J9803A): managed, fanless, 24 x gigabit copper plus 2 x gigabit SFP. I paid £25 each on ebay (around 28 Euros). Obsolete, but still perfectly capable.
