I honestly only really like server room stuff from ltt because i don't know anyone else building out ubiquiti like this. Everyone who is a campus or data center is whoring out to cisco licenses… which is admittedly awesome and why its tge industry standard. Really like jake taking on these racks with just a twinkle in the eye instead of you know planning out a $250k config and planning the intent out with failover aggregation and load balancing accounted for. The chaos makes this channel and i honestly love to hard lessons learned too. Of course they could just shell out for 4 network engineers and turn everything into something that makes sense. But honestly this is better. I mean content wise. 🎉🎉🎉

In the power section, are you sure you are running 208V and not 240? 208V is the voltage you get when you go between phases on 3 phase power, not 2 phase power like you said right before.

I don't understand why you wouldn't have a backup Generator if you have that many power outages. It would be well worth the cost to have a diesel generator for your building in my opinion. If Natural gas is available might even consider that option as well.
I remember when I lived in Texas with my first wife we had a lot of power outages, thunderstorms and even power spikes. The very first thing I did to protect our delicate computers was buy 2 UPS battery backups. Not only did they provide battery backup but they also were line conditioners to keep consistent power because of the spikes and sags. Well worth the money. I live in Florida now and I bought a generator for my house due to the need just because well I live in Florida enough said. It is necessary and well worth the money.

    Notes:
    – The weird latency issues are because of Proxmox. I tried it in my homelab for a while, and however they have the thread scheduler configured sucks. As much as I'm pissed about the Broadcom buyout, ESXi never exhibited those issues either at work or home. I'd look at Xen (XGP-ng) or even Hyper-V is better. I'm suspicious that the issues in proxmox are due to just letting KVM run with default settings, though I hope it's just a configuration issue and not a KVM issue, I haven't done enough testing with other KVM hypervisors.
    – I had a rocket plus 4TB drive that went DOA. I bought it when they were new and it was $799. Sabrient warranty is worthless unless you registered them. Sabrient Sucks, and can go die in a fire as far as I'm concerned. Go with a reputable company like Samsung. Even though they had some issues with their 990 Pro at launch, they fixed the issues via firmware, and have a legit 5-year warranty.
    – OPNsense is great, and has been better than PFsense since the split. Don't know why they don't get more credit in the online review / diy tutiorial sphere.
    – IMHO: I recommend against the trend for Hyperconverged Infrastructure. You want your storage problems to be separate from your compute/host issues. Hosts are disposable, storage is not. You'll thank yourself for bucking the trend in the long run.

Did enjoy the video. I deal with a lot of hardware at work (we run everything on-prem still), and it's fun. Congrats on the new setup.

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
