The hard drive chassis is cool, but they really missed an opportunity in its design. They could have sold a ton of them if they had designed them to be be stackable with screws connecting them together. Two hard drives isn't enough for me.

Super cool iteration on an already awesome base, it's a shame they fumbled the basics so hard. Even if the 'USB-C shaped barrel jack' was the only flaw, I still wouldn't get one. It shows a pretty severe lack of respect for established standards and lack of understanding about their purpose and design, also the risk of frying a USB compliant device, especially my phone, is just too high. If I saw my friends or family with anything like that I'd immediately snip the end off and slap it onto a 5V supply.

If you're only going for 2 drives you may as well just use Raid-1 with the onboard raid controller on your motherboard. Zimablade should be saved for a 5+ Disk NAS.

    zimaboard? more like zimabored.

A lot of USB charger wall warts require a handshake to supply higher power. That would require a chip on the device to negotiate with the wall jack. Even the raspberry Pi 5 does not negotiate for more power and gets the standard low voltage supply requiring the proprietary power supply. Disappointing to be honest as this is not new tech.

    October 14, 2024 at 12:45 am

I like the blade form factor better because it is squarer than the predecessor. It fits better for stacking. I want to see the PCI expansion on top instead of at the side to keep the footprint tiny. The price is excellent for a maker.

That USB-C 12V is explosion, dead dock, dead type-c monitor, dead portable drive waiting to happen. Especially couple years from now, one takes out some type-c looking adapter and connect to something, boom 12 volt.

Is there any pcie adapter to work on zimaboard/zimablade for thunderbolt 2, 3 or 4 to connect to OCW Thunderbay 4 mini?

thanks for this review, for a complete beginner that is looking into getting (or DIYing) their first NAS to use to back up personal Photos and Videos and also a JellyFin type Media server, would you recommend this? or do you have some better suggestions?

  19. @whiterook6

150$ for a two-bay case? Does it do anything other than hold the hard drives and the zimaboard?

Can you power the zimablade from a atx 12v psu?

  21. @christian_oz

    October 14, 2024 at 12:45 am

Thanks for making the video. I agree it has a lot of potential, but it needs a lot more thought on the physical aspects of the arrangement. It feels like they finished the hardware design of the card and they are trying to rush it out of the door.

  22. @arturosann7016

    October 14, 2024 at 12:45 am

  26. @leadfarmer5563

    October 14, 2024 at 12:45 am

The detractor for me is the price of thier zimaboards. I think $50 cheaper would make them more appealing for what you’re actually getting.

  27. @rafaelrafaelrafael

    October 14, 2024 at 12:45 am

As far as I can tell it's a gamble which CPU you get. Does anyone know otherwise?

so i hear you can get an N100 for like a hundred buck 😀

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
