Servers and Services
Peer to Peer
•Kind of workgroup model, sharing information, data, resource between two or more systems without centralization (or centralized control)
•A system act like a server and other ack like client in that particular instance
Server and Client
•Server provide services , client access the service
•Web Server – web pages –Web service , client (Web browser) access Web pages from Web Server
•Client request for service to Server, Server send response to client
Servers understand Client Request by Protocols
Servers called as a particular server based on the service it providing
How a Server becomes a particular server ,
By installing & configuring built-in feature/roles, application or package
Server – based on Service
•Web Server -HTTP/HTTPS(80/443), Apache httpd, MS IIS, Tomcat, Glassfish

Purpose of Class
Discusses what servers are and misconceptions about them.
Topics Covered
Definition of a Server
Server Operating Systems
Server Hardware
Server Functions
Class Notes
Defining a Server
A server provides services to other computers on a network. A server can be an expensive Windows 2008 Server, or a simple Windows XP Home computer with a shared printer.
Operating System
Server Operating Systems are more stable and secure then Desktop operating Systems
Server Operating Systems and their Software are generally much more expensive then Desktop counterparts
Server Operating Systems are generally not as easy to administer as Desktop Operating Systems
Hardware
A Server can use ANY hardware to operate, but Server Hardware is made to be more reliable then desktop hardware.
Xeon Processors are standard processors used in servers
Redundant Power Supply allow one power Supply to Fail while the Server is Still Running
RAID — Allows for a Hard Drive to fail without crashing the Server
ECC RAM is RAM that does a self test. It is more stable then regular RAM, but much more expensive.
Types of Servers
Software features — multiple features can be on one box
Security and Authentication gives access to network resources
Print Servers share printers on a network
File Servers share files on a network
Web/ FTP Servers provide websites on a network
Mail Servers provide email routing for an organization
Database Servers store data for outside applications
Remote Access Servers allow Internet users to access the internal network. Usually a VPN connection.
Final Thoughts…
Buy what you need… Many people buy a $5000 server when all they need is a Dell bargain bin system. .

How to Learn Cyber Security Faster In 5 Simple Steps
One of the hardest things about learning cyber security is there’s no formal roadmap and a million different places to start. The more topics you explore, the more rabbit holes you discover. It’s really intimidating.
How do you manage this? It all starts with having a strategy and structured plan for learning. This way, you can stay on track and make consistent progress. Here are five simple steps to do this:
Step 1: Focus on topics related to your existing meaning structures. Meaning structures are areas of knowledge that we can tap into when learning something new. That’s why transitioning from I.T. or programming into cyber security is more accessible than from most other fields. You already have similar meaning structures in place. If you are from a non-technical background, pick a cyber security subfield that’s most related to what you already know.
Step 2: Interleave theory and practice to build competency. Doing this allows you to understand new topics from multiple perspectives. It also lets your brain rest and reorganizes during many sleep cycles over the weeks and months. Humans build competency over time, not in a one-time dose at a boot camp or crash course.
Step 3: Use teachers to assign you projects and provide feedback. Don’t rely on them for teaching. Many people think that learning is just a matter of someone telling them or showing them how to do something. Knowledge transfer happens by doing projects with guided feedback along the way from a teacher. Try this approach next time you’re working with a teacher, and you’ll be amazed at the progress.
Step 4: Build mental models to help organize your knowledge. Learning is more about knowledge organization than it is about accumulation. That’s why you need to acquire good mental models along the way. They are shortcuts that help you organize new information into a visual representation which acts as a meaningful structure for you to learn cyber security topics faster.
Step 5: Use mind maps to help visualize and structure your research process. To manage the overwhelming amount of new ideas and concepts you encounter when learning cyber security, you need to map them out on paper along the way. When you can decompose abstract ideas into visual chunks, it’s much easier to identify which areas to focus on or skip.

I’ve moved to virtual private servers instead of physical servers at work, and I love not managing hardware, but it is tough when I know a tiny Lenovo would far outperform the virtual machine for a fraction of the price.
Nice setup, I’m interested in where you go from here.
Out of curiosity, are you still using a tiny split keyboard? They travel nicely 😅

I can't help but the laugh at the idea of an ITX board in a 4U case. 😂 I will agree that most people could consolidate their labs down to a very small amount of hardware though. It's just not as fun. Also there's some things you can't get in a compact setup unfortunately. Always seems like you have to compromise if you want to keep things small.

Ya, you really need to connect the UPS to the PCs so they know that they need to shut down. There's a pi Network UPS Tool that looks solid and would be a great use case for the spare Pi.

2:20 if it makes you feel better i bought a 42u thinking i was going to fill it out and i have like 2 more things than you lol.
7:58 One of my 2u "servers" is actually just 2 mini pcs mounted inside with breakout cables because modern mini pcs sip like 10watts and have huge amounts of processing power. A comparative intel i3 i5 system will use nearly 100 watts. N95 chips are amazing.
