I am going to be trying out Proxmox in the futura here. as a replacement for VMWare ESXi, that has been losing good will for a while. Moving cool stuff over in all of there expensive add on packages..

lots of people will still stick it in their closet rather than under a desk, but it still gives you everything in one box which you can toss out to every branch / retail store / etc..

Despite the sarcastic overtones, I have to agree with you. Servers belong somewhere secure. Not just because of theft, but because of accidental damage as well.
Not to mention, while the idea of jamming five servers into one chassis is "cool," the world is moving to virtualization. This seems like a step back to me.

yes, but their are some programs you cant virtualize, and even with virtualization you still need an external data store. So the 2 server plus storage would be great. Also, if you just want to run a virtual setup you can use 2 of the servers to run hypervisors so you can move the VM's to a different machine for maintenance. All around I think this is a good idea.

I have no idea how that many drives, processors, blades, fans and PSUs could be quiet or cool in a typical office. If you have indeed managed it, that is an impressive feat. I'd want to see and hear one running first!

This seems like it could be a good entry-level virtualization hardware in a box. Though not sure I would want all of my stuff in one box. SPOF risk.

The VRTX also comes rack-mountable. Nothing prevents using it as a virtualization platform. 4 VM hosts or 2×2 in a HA setup although the chassis is inarguably a SPF here..
