Great timing. I'm just setting up a 50TB ZFS pool on a Proxmox 6.1 server for backup of my main home server.

Nice video. Just a quick note, as far as I know, the free version of PVE has all the same features as the "paid" one, the only difference is support (depending on the license level) and access to the enterprise repo, which is basically just "stable" whereas the community repo is "testing".

The great thing about Proxmox is that it's Linux and Linux will run on most anything unlike ESXi which is very hardware specific.

I feel like people that give the most flack about buying older hardware always suggest something at a MUCH higher price or something that simply isn't available at the price they were able to get it for. The best home lab server is the one you can find and one you can afford. Those old servers are built quite well, I started with an X3650 M1. I still have it on a shelf somewhere. I bet it would fire right up and run if I bothered to plug it in right now. I feel like even something that old still has a use even in "production". If you don't have a big budget, power is cheap, and you just need something to be able to run old software…

Hey man, don't send RAM in a letter. The machines bend the letter and it will break the chips/circuit board 🙁

Hi Morten, I have two PE2950G3 running Proxmox 6.0. Works verry well for my needs. I use them to host my page, software development and storage. And of course, a lot of VMs. Keep safe.

    Hi,

installed harddisk using raid? or only one harddisk used for software installation?

  13. @jamess1787

    October 3, 2024 at 8:14 pm

It won't stop complaining, these Dell's never stop complaining about the raid-card battery. Only reason I replaced them is to allow the servers to boot up faster… Never seamed like a weak battery caused disk write fail/corruption…

If you want to cut down on power and heat, you can change both X5450 for E5450 and will save about 80W total. If you're really stingy on power, you can go for 2 L5430 cpus, but they are slower clock speed than the 5450 (2.6 vs 3.0) (Directed at someone who might want to buy it, all of those CPUs are CHEAP)

    Hi!
I have a problem with iscsi multipath on Proxmox. Tried it on 2 physical servers (Dell R210 and HP DL360 G6) and it always fails. I'm using the multipath-tools device mapper thing. After i configure multipaths in multipath.conf and start multipathd it works. But after some random amount of time some random paths fail, sometimes all paths fail and the Proxmox web gui hangs up…
Maybe you know how to deal with this problem? It's impossible to restart the multipath service every hour to keep server running…

    Cheers from Poland!

Amber color of the info display means it is complaining about something. Could be that discharged RAID battery. Also seems to be a bit too loud. If everything is good fans should spin slower. That dentist smell – isn't it a smell of something burning inside? Like an electrolytic capacitor? 😀

this is what i like about Linux works with older hardware and keeps hardware out of landfill. vt-D is whats required on Intel chips and IOMMU for AMD chips. i used vt-D with XCP-ng.

Great. On a dell 2950 in 2010 I installed my first release of proxmox (1.7) and today I still use it on various servers.

It works on any hardware and is better than any other hypervisor (ESX – HyperV – VirtualBox).

    congratulations ………. continue.

    Hi, Morton,

Try YUMI so that you can put multiple ISOs on a single flash drive. It works quite well for me.

I'm not sure that it supports ProxMox though, but maybe if you use the other linux option with GRUB.

    October 3, 2024 at 8:14 pm

I know the Trouble of having multiple USB-Sticks, maybe this is something for you (https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html) It is a free Multiboot solution. You only have to put the .ISO files in the Main directory and you can directly boot from them.

i got a 2950 gen ii for free, its got 4 2TB drives 32GB and 2 4core Xeons. It was pretty loud so i changed the fans with quiet ones and now it runs at about 55dB and stays at around 28C. its pretty good now for what i use it for, AD DS, WDS, SMB, Minecraft, FS19. It kills it
