Raspberry Pi Rack - 6 node 3D Printed 1U Pi cluster

I got tired of having Raspberry Pis hanging about my office. So I found a really nice 3D model for a 1U Pi rack by russross on Thingiverse, printed it, and put it in my new rack.

I’ll show you everything in this video!

Special thanks to Russ Ross for his videos and 3D models:

After years of dealing with printer crap, a friend recommended a solution which I will now wholeheartedly recommend to you: get a Prusa.

I don't use PoE, but I did build my own USB UPS for running Pis and such. 120W mains -> 12v power supply with battery terminals (it handles the UPS function all on its own) in a box with a bunch of 6-36v -> USB power boards that feed to a panel via paired up USB sockets. I even used a couple of fast charging modules to give me some rapid phone charging ports if I need them.

In all, I have a 110Wh 12v gel battery hooked up that will keep the handful of little projects I run off it running… for around a day.

Did you pay $400 for the Aruba switch? I got a Aruba s2500 48P-4x10G POE+ for $99 on ebay, a couple of weeks ago, and I just looked and some are selling it even cheaper. It doesn't actually include the 10G transceivers.

    October 16, 2024 at 6:52 pm

Theoretically, you could fit 7 Pi's in 1U if you were to mount them at an angle. It shouldn't even effect additional stuff like taller heatsinks and fans, or extended modules depending on the height

Hey Jeff, I am a complete novice to working with Raspberry Pi systems but I'm an avid computer builder and I've been doing research for a few days now and I need help. Do you happen to have an email inbox or something more formal I could send a question to? I'm a teacher who is trying to setup a specific configuration and I just can't wrap my head around some of the details. If you have any way to ask questions besides the Youtube comment section, that would be wonderful if I could get ahold of you and get some assistance.

Thank you for this! I am about to dive into 3d printing and I knew one of the things I'd want to do is print stuff for my server rack. As such I thought I'd need something capable of printing up to 19" wide (~500mm) finding a printer with that large of an axis in at least 1 dimension is very difficult without spending 1000's. I never would have thought of putting a threaded road through the prints to give the 19" span the support it needs to join multiple pieces together!

    October 16, 2024 at 6:52 pm

Man if this (or the 12pi version) were modified enough to allow for the SSD HAB (hardware attached on bottom) as well I would be printing this right now.

    October 16, 2024 at 6:52 pm

Thanks for the detailed report on your experience printing this–I'm a 3D-printing novice and it's nice to see that I'm not the only one with a pile of failed prints next to my shiny successes. Also, thanks for the kind words! I don't think I'll ever stop being excited when someone else puts this design to work.

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
