Representing Numbers and Letters with Binary: Crash Course Computer Science #4

Today, we’re going to look at how computers use a stream of 1s and 0s to represent all of our data – from our text messages and photos to music and web pages. We’re going to focus on how these binary values are used to represent numbers and letters and discuss how our need to perform operations on more extensive and more complex matters brought us from our 8-bit video games to beautiful Instagram photos, and from unreadable garbled text in our emails to a universal language encoding scheme.

Oh my goodness, did Carrie Anne just say, "Unicode, one code to rule them all?!" I had to pause the video to catch a breath because it was so funny. I literally shed laughing tears. Her delivery of the line was too cool, very matter-of-fact, only the slightest smirk to give away the reference to the Lord of the Rings. Thank you, Carrie Anne, that made my day!

Muy buena serie y traducción, éste capítulo estuvo igual de bueno que el anterior, creía que un byte era cuatro bits.

Superb series, lots of love to Carrie Anne and Crash Course ❤❤❤
At 9:27, Carrie Anne mentions that 16 bits with space over a million codes. But, actually in 16 bits the max value is 2^16 = 65536. Right?
With more than 120,000 of them in over 100 types of script plus space for mathematical symbols and even graphical characters like emoji. Then with 16 bits is it possible to refer all of them as the size is limited to 65535.

Have you noticed that old weights for scaled were binary?
    1oz. 2oz, 4oz, 8oz, 16oz (1lb) etc.?

  19. @uredakabir8294

    November 2, 2024 at 4:29 pm

In binary system, 1+1=10, then why 1+1+1 should not be 15 rather than 11?

The narrative and visual sequences are very effective. This has accelerated my comprehension on this subject greatly, thank you!

What is Roblox? ROBLOX is an online virtual playground and workshop, where kids of all ages can safely interact, create, have fun, and learn. It’s unique in that practically everything on ROBLOX is designed and constructed by members of the community. ROBLOX is designed for 13 to 18 year olds, but it is open to people of all ages. Each player starts by choosing an avatar and giving it an identity. They can then explore ROBLOX — interacting with others by chatting, playing games, or collaborating on creative projects. Each player is also given their own piece of undeveloped real estate along with a virtual toolbox with which to design and build anything — be it a navigable skyscraper, a working helicopter, a giant pinball machine, a multiplayer “Capture the Flag” game or some other, yet-to-be-dreamed-up creation. There is no cost for this first plot of virtual land. By participating and by building cool stuff, ROBLOX members can earn specialty badges as well as ROBLOX dollars (“Robux”). In turn, they can shop the online catalog to purchase avatar clothing and accessories as well as premium building materials, interactive components, and working mechanisms.
