Review IBM System x3650 M3 rack Server - 047

I have two “new” used IBM System x3650 M3 server model 7945-J2G

Before I put them into production, am I doing a thorough review of this server model.
This is a perfect home server for others who love to play with server hardware in their home datacenter.

I love working with heating, insulation, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I’m trying to get the most out of my money, and my time. .

    Hi Morten
you had mention on one of your videos about if you could get a x3650 m3 instead of a x3650 m2 that would be better. But you also compared On HP dl380 g6 to a x3650 m2. If I had the option of buying. Between hp dl380 g6 and x3650 m2 which one would be better? which one do you recommend. The reason you suggest to go to a X3650 m3. Is it because of the issues you had in the past with out of the box x3650 m2.
    Thank you for time.

Thanks my friend. Did you ever get that 1U 10/100 switch you wanted to get to connect your management ports of your servers. So you could have spare gigabit ports on your switch?

    Hi Morten
First at all thank you for your videos, they are great and very informative.
I read that you find out what is the tray in the video minute 35 the Remote RAID battery tray F #49Y5355 I find this info in the IBM link below. They have all the documentation for your servers.

I land in your channel by chance when I was looking for servers. I am considering one for my backups/cloud/synch needs.

My I ask you for your opinion, please?

I start to appreciate this "vintage" servers but I don’t know yet if is something suitable for me. I am a Mac User I have been using Mac since 1986, Macintosh Plus was my first Mac… …yes I am a designer and photograph.
I use two desktop Macs, a MacPro, the tower not the cylinder, an iMac and a portable. I want to have a good backup and cloud/synch system with out to relaying in external companies like Dropbox, Blackblaze, iCloud etc
In my Mac Pro I have installed 6 HHD totalling 9TB. One 4TB HDD is for my TimeMachine backup. The Boot OS HDD and apps are in a M.2 PCI-E drives card in a Samsung SM951 256GB NVMe M.2. Very fast!
The iMac have 1TB but probably I will add a SSD for OS and Apps and devote the main HDD for documents. Like in the MacPro.

I start to look the Sinology and QNAP but apart of the price tag I think they fell a little short in technical features. I start to look for alternatives and I think I will build a NAS or use a “vintage server” and install XPenology.

I have a question about the Dell Poweredge 2950 and after I find your channel also the IBM x3650 M1 and M3. Do you know for sure if the maximum supported drive size is 2TB? I find some info in Dell forum but was a little unclear. They say that depends of the firmware version you can use 3TB SATA HDD. And in the M1 and M2 what is the maximum supported drive size?

    Thank you very much

Thanks for another lovely video. You said the raid card has 8 ports, but I could only notice 2 ports in the video? And do you have to buy extra backplanes (and maybe more) to use the last 8 hdd slots? Seems like only 8 of them is connected and have backplanes for them? Currently looking at this server and it looks to be a nice server for a decent price and with 2.5" hdd's up to 4TB then I could slowly upgrade the storage until all 16 slots are filled. but what is needed extra to use the last 8 slots for hdd's? (I would use sata disks but that shouldn't be a problem from what I know).

I'm buying an x3650 M3 and wanted to know if there is any difference going with ram without heatsinks? Because they are cheaper. Looking at one with X5650, 48GB, M5015 and 2x146GB SAS don't need more that that.

  12. @c-fedtech3479

    November 12, 2024 at 5:46 am

I just ordered one with the same cpu's and 4 drives for $86 US and $55 shipping. Only downside is it has 16 gig of ram . hopefully the ram is not expensive .
Going to run ESXI with around 8 to 10 windows 7 VM's.

I am going to pick a IBM system x3650 server model 7979 up for around 110 $ US.
    With 32 gb of memory
    6x 146gb sas hd
    2x 73 gb sas hd
    2 cpu
    1 spare hd 73gb
    2 spare hd holders
    and 2 rack rails.
I will use this system to gain some experience working with systems like these and other server environments.
I am from the Netherlands btw, and i will be watching all your videos of these IBM systems to gain some experience, thanks for all the information given in these video's.

Great video, and like your others videos!
I've just bought similar X3650 M3 but i'm concerned about power consumption. My comed with 675W PSU but there are available 460W PSU, do you know whether it has impact on power consumption? I'm looking for savings 🙂

Hi, thank you for sharing. We have an issue with our x3650 7979, after having done preventive maintenance (compressed air cleaning) we reassembled disk drives, power supply on its place, now it won't boot. No led on the front panel, only fans at hi rpm, but no boot, no video at all. We have 6 disks on this server, 4 of them turn on green but no blinking, on bay 0 an 1 no led is turned on (nor amber not green). We rechecked memory well seated, Raid SAS module well seatead but no luck. Any thoughts? We repassed the diagnose guide but says nothing on regards this failure. Any help here highly appreciated. Unfortunately this server is still a production.Thank you in advance

Hi Morten, before I jump in and buy one of these I would like to ask how long boot times you experience with these server? I have read somewhere that some experience quite long boot times.

Morten, I found an IBM System x3650 M3 Dual 2.26GHz Intel Xeon 5520 4-Core 36GB RAM MR10i Refurbished___$165. It has no drives. Is this a good price for a beginner or starter server? What questions should I ask before spending the money? Thank you for the reviews that you do and the time you spend on going through the details about the servers.

I don’t like the overall quality. This is disappointing, the fans tends to get stuck and wobble a lot unlike the dl380 g7. The server quickly overheated when the lid is open, and i cannot get it to close. I think it is damaged in the shipping as well. The caddies don’t look awesome either.

The x3650m4 damaged due to board failure. The used x3650 m4 was brought for replacement. Could I put the two SAS hdds from damaged server into the new one? I expect the new server run without any software installation, since I input hdds with all software on it. Can you kindly comment, please?

Please help, when I turn on the system Its works ok but then a couple of hours it turns off if I want to turn it on again tries to charge BIOS and then it turns off , in the Light Path says "error BRD" . When I switch off the electricity and put it back again I cannot connect at IMM . When I disconect everything and wait patiently a couple of days and try to turn on again ,it works ok BUT it turns off a couple of hours (again)

This is my new modem (school) as we currently own a fritz modem, for just 110€ a 12 core is amazing, there will be 2 vm, one running some firewall things to restrict internet access in labs (currently hosted on a i5 7400) and one will be a massive pfsense installation with all the computers (200+) and different subnets for different classrooms, net for (segreteria, translate) and 2 wifi, one for teachers and one for students, as our wifi is running now at something like 3 mbps because of all devices connected at the same time. Gonna go configure, wish me luck
