I work at one the factories that make this type of wire. You can't imagine how complicated it is to make and let alone make right. Typically one to two people running the operation. It is dangerous and quite expensive just to try and start up these cable assemblies. The holders for some of the machine hardware can be near the size of a small boat trailer. Let alone employing the use of superalloys to aid in manufacturing.

Great video… I wait almost 10 minutes to hear "Why underwater power cables are so expensive" and…. are expensive because the cables have multiple layers, are constructed of spacial materials and of course are long – great answers. You can be better on what you do in the future without talking about the history and all the resources needed to keep these cables alive.

The shark thing is over with, afaik. It is thought that they were attracted to leakage voltage through the outside of the cable. Increasing the insulation reportedly seems to have dissuaded them for further interest.

Question for the experts: what's the longest unbroken length of (fiber) communication cable currently being manufactured? I'd guess power cable maximum lengths are shorter due to the size of the cable. When are two lengths of cable spliced–factory, or the ship, or whenever a repeater is inserted?
