TWO AMD Epyc Servers for $500!

I’m a sucker for a good deal, but sometimes I still wind up a sucker. When I saw a 2-Node AMD Epyc Blade Server for sale on eBay, I knew I had to have one. But with zero documentation, and Quanta refusing to acknowledge this thing ever existing, have I bitten off more than I can chew?

But first… What am I drinking???

    Cloud-based IPMI? Seriously? WTF, Quanta!

Unfortunately, Quanta is shit. Repaired many, many, many of them (Intel based) at Intel's Folsom, CA location (within their data center). I highly recommend any other option.

you tried to put a nvme/u.2 with linux/windows installed, and configured for remote access. if post and boot mayby you will access via network.

I'm dropping a like on this because it didn't work. This is the life of a techy, sometimes you take a risk and it doesn't pay off. People need to see the reality of buying used hardware. Sometimes shit just don't work!
I'm staring at a used Surface 4 Pro that looked great in the listings but came with a busted display. It works when it feels like it or when the battery is dead but the moment it tries to display anything that isn't the "Dead battery" display, it freezes except for the top ~100 pixels of the screen. /sad. I'm going to see if I can use it as a headless server when my mini-displayport adaptor comes in.

So glad ive hust standardized to supermicro. Alrhough i dont currently have a use case for blades ive been curious. I do run dual epyc 7742s in supermicro 2u servers for my cpu mining when im not teaching myself how to build ai/render nodes.

This kind of anti-secondary market practices should be a felony.

  15. @FlyingToilet

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

It's a long shot, but if you can't figure out how to get video working, maybe try loading a thumb drive with a Linux live CD, hope that it boots to it, check to see if it pulled a DHCP lease, ssh in and use ipmitool to reset the BMC password.

  16. @saultube44

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

Thank you for showing me to never buy Quanta/s products. Haave you tried Reddit?

  17. @IraQNid

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

Surely there are other customers from the manufacturer that you could potentially befriend.

  18. @jeremyfmoses

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

So Quanta requires that your IMPI network has access to the internet? That seems like a security risk waiting to happen. I'm not sure if this is standard practice or not, but if I ran a data centre and had the option of IMPI being intranet-only, that's how I'd do it.

  19. @bricefleckenstein9666

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

37" is long for a server.
    I thought my SuperMicro 6047 72-drive model was bad – but it's only 35".
On the other hand, it's a 4u and a LOT heavier – even before I put drives in it!

  20. @zaca211

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

"Sometimes all you need is a trip to another location". I cant count on my hands how many times that has fixed a clients computer or server.

Is "really curious" the same as my code for "investgating something" which really means you might be looking at components while slightly inebriated ?

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

why but why they do that !!! person/company that buy a server like that do you realy think they will buy a second one from that company , is anti consumer to lock the platform and make it a pain in the b to use it ,

  27. @claucmgpcstuf5103

SO THI SI BAD VERI VREI BAD !!

  28. @GGBeyond

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

I'm actually tempted to buy one of these and a used 64-core Rome CPU just for the (relatively cheap) compute power to replace two nodes of 2x E5-2695 v4 CPUs. But it seems like a gamble with the lack of support and documentation. The difficulty with using it is probably why it's cheap to begin with.

  29. @T3hderk87

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

Rewatching this episode hurts me to see the initial hope in Jeff's eyes for this quanta system…. 😢😢😢

  30. @T3hderk87

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

Oh God, i found the same one AT AN EVEN BETTER PRICE!!! Man, $299 is tempting even with all the failure. Does anyone know if Quanta vendor locks their cpus?

  31. @kieranjervis8590

    September 26, 2024 at 7:13 am

I really wish they did these in a 2u form factor stacked so I can put them in a narrower rack.
