Why would you build a Raspberry Pi Cluster?



Everyone seems to be asking, so I figured I’d answer. I’ll explain what I use my small Pi clusters for, and what some other people use them for.

But also, why cluster in the first place? Can’t you just buy an EPYC 64-core CPU and an RTX 3080 and have all the processing power you’d ever need?

Maybe. But color me skeptical!

    I am working in a Pharma company and we might build a huge (20 to 100) node pi cluster in the near future for running reports on huge amounts of data that will be served by apache Kafka in the future and after a nice little pitch that Kafka stream processing could yield real time analytics data and real time performance dashboards we are thinking about using a lower power pi cluster to run processors on event streams for analytics data.

    5:45 alternatively wait for the 7702 to come down in price while the pi’s are the same or even more expensive now, the 7702 looks a lot more attractive. (I know that’s not the point of the video, just saying)

    The most important part for me is disposability / replacability if something goes wrong on my pihole for instance

    wait so there good a parallel processing so just a GPU with a higher base clock? so couldn't you technically make a DIY GPU using this?

    Joe Armstrong, cocreator of Erlang programming language which was made to make distributed soft real time systems, like Ericson's telecom stuff, said that he wanted a CPU with thousands of small cores, because that is what is best for fault tolerant systems. With Erlang you can make clusters easily without even the OS supporting it because Erlang VM's can connect to each other in the same network or even across data centers in the world, and then send a message from an Erlang green thread in a VM in a server in San Francisco to a green thread in a machine in a different country using the exact same code.

    so having a Pi cluster helps you to learn to code distributed/fault tolerant software and how to make it performant, if you can squeeze the most out of a RaspberryPi cluster then you will have the skills to start doing it in big boxes with xeon clusters with 64 cores/cpu

    Erlang's Joe Armstrong also said that making a system that handles a million concurrent users is extremely hard and keep scaling up is exponentially hard, however making a system that can handle one user at a time is extremely easy and to scale it you just replicate that as much as you need. Obviously how do you handle that many miniservers, with supervision trees and load balancing trees.

    performance does not mean speed, it means how well a list of requirements and metrics are met, and this list can exclude throughput

    always a reasons to do it,i myself learned on pi clusters, and now have a job working for a company maintaining clusters in a data centre.

    On die ECC is not sufficient if you care about data integrity.
    If you run a file server – you want ecc. If you run addblocker or other container? Who cares.

    If you develop software you clearly dont want to corrupt your source code or compile software whidh gets distributed on a scale as you wont notice something got flushed wrongly. Happy debugging…

    Ah yes with skfiteare development I don't mean front end. That js done by MacBook pro user who dont have this pro feature

    Do Pi CM clusters actually get you reliability? They are connected together on a single board in the examples I’ve seen. If a CM or a drive attached to it dies, or just plain needs a reboot, can you hot swap it without having to shut down the other CMs on the same board? The CMs also don’t seem to have independent networking or M.2 slots, sharing those resources with the other CMs. That seems like a problem for a Ceph cluster, for example.

    I remember when Pis started to become a "thing" mainstream when I was in high school about 15 years ago and we all thought they were the coolest things for DYIing your own computer not just because it's cheaper, but because you get to build it yourself and it's only exactly what you need. So you basically built yourself a mini home raspberry mainframe 😂
