You got a rack server, now what. Going over the hardware and setup of a rack server

You just got a rack server and don’t know what to do with it? In this video I go over how the hardware is layed out in most rack server, and go over some of the issues you may come across when working with the hardware. I also show how to install an OS, IMPI, and the BIOS on a server.

Shouldn't be it the other way around?
You know what (needs) to do, and find the server type that suit your needs 🙂

as a fan and user of zfs thanks for pointing out swapping raid cards for simple hbas when going software raid
as for "hardware" raid: with modern software raid is there any need for them? the come with disadvantages like hiding the individual drives from the os (unless there's a driver which allows an os to still access per-drive data like smart and disk health while still access the user data over the logical volume) and stuff like require additional battery backups

This is really thorough, you've pointed out so many things that could catch someone out and leave them with a problem or having to purchase more bits. Those hot swap caddies can be a real pain and depending on the model some cost way more than $10 so worth checking out pricing before buying a server if some are needed.
With regards fans, for me the biggest issue is I often forget just how powerful they are compared to average desktop fans. Some server fans can could easily remove finger tips!

Another very helpful production. Thank you for demystifying features and differences between server machines and desktop PCs. I have a Dell PowerEdge tower server, different from racks/blades, but your videos help navigate the features. Thanks again!

how do you get video output from a server without a video card? does the vga just work without needing a gpu, is there some sort of graphics on the motherboard?

IPMI hack/commands to slow the server fans also. As to the question of why people want servers at home? 2 words "memory capacity" you cant run large LLM on 64gb ram desktop pc

i have a r630. it uses the 2.5 inch drives and uses the h330 mini as raid controller. i am happy with it and i dont really need more the 1.8tb per drive. i have 2 sas 1,2tb hdd drives in it for my nas storage and 4 sata 128gb ssd in raid 10 for my services like game servers and stable diffusion, the hdd are mirrored. the reason is access speed not recovery. mine came with two of the 22cores e5 2699v4 and had total of 256gb with 4 rank lrdim 32gb modules. this is way to much ram i need but i need the ranks and channels. i dont use docker or any virtualization, i only use screen.

  31. @reinekewf7987

    September 26, 2024 at 6:28 pm

the perc h330 mini for example shows all drives even not configured because it is in a hba mode for all not configured drives automatically. also the r630 has onbord 2 sata and one is being used for the dvd drive in the front.

Excellent video! While I know a fair bit about desktop computers having built a few, I know almost nothing about servers. I just acquired a damaged Cisco UCS C240 M4 LFF for free. It came with 12 HGST Ultrastar He10 10TB 7200 RPM 4Kn SAS 12Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch ISE Enterprise Hard Drives, 2 120GB Intel SSD boot drives, one Xenon CPU, 16GB of RAM, and two 1200W power supplies. Luckily, spare CPU heatsinks are cheap and easy to find for this server so I can easily and cheaply add another CPU. The issue it has is a damaged disk drive back plane. I have another one on the way in the mail so hopefully it'll be up and running soon. I was originally going to run TrueNAS but seeing how easy it is to install Windows 10, I may do that instead. Need to decide whether to set up all the HD's in non-RAID mode thereby getting 120TB of storage or as a RAID 5 giving 60TB of storage. Not sure what I'm going to do with this beast yet. Maybe set it up as a home file server where I and my family can access it from anywhere there is an internet connection. This is going to be fun.

This is probably one of the best explanation videos on YouTube. I just got 2 oracl sun zfs 2 and 10 cisco ucs c240 m4 all for around $1200 to set up my first home lab. I know its over kill but i really dont want to upgrade for a long time. Thank you the video man!
