We found the best early deals to shop before October Big Deal Days
The Amazon Prime Big Deal Days event is coming up in a few days, so it’s time to start thinking about what you may want to snag at a discount during the sale. Some may shudder at the thought of holiday shopping already, but if you pay the $139 annual fee for Prime, these sale events are a great time to stock up on essentials and cross things off your shopping list well before the mad rush at the end of the year. While October Prime Day typically isn’t on the same scale as Prime Day in July, we typically see some decent deals that may come back around during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And right now, there are already some good early Prime Day deals to consider. These are the best early Prime Day deals we’ve found ahead of Prime Big Deal Days. We’ll be updating this post regularly in the lead-up to October Prime Day, so check back for the latest deals.

NASA postpones launch of Europa Clipper mission to Jupiter moon
SpaceX and NASA have called off Thursday’s planned launch of the Europa Clipper mission due to Hurricane Milton, which is heading east toward Florida, home of the Kennedy Space Center.
“Once the storm passes, recovery teams will assess the safety of the spaceport and the launch processing facilities for damage before personnel return to work,” NASA said in a post on social media on Sunday, adding in another message: “Teams have secured the spacecraft in SpaceX’s hangar at NASA Kennedy.”
Teams have secured the spacecraft in SpaceX’s hangar at @NASAKennedy. The next launch opportunity will be determined once the storm passes. More: https://t.co/2iZPSR5lpI https://t.co/7FQhkQspKG
— NASA Europa Clipper (@EuropaClipper) October 6, 2024
The spaceflight company has a launch window with daily opportunities until October 30, though hopefully the rocket will be able to get away next weekend or early next week rather than toward the end of the month.
The Europa Clipper mission will head toward Jupiter to study the icy world of the Europa moon after arriving there in 2030. Scientists hope that data gathered during the mission will help determine whether its subsurface ocean could support some form of life.
A triple-booster Falcon Heavy rocket, on only its 11th flight, will launch the mission from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Multiple cameras on the ground and on the rocket itself will offer dramatic views of the Falcon Heavy’s ascent. The Falcon Heavy uses three Falcon 9 rockets whose total of 27 Merlin engines generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to around eighteen 747 aircraft. The Heavy is one of the world’s most powerful operational rockets and can lift nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 pounds) to orbit.
SpaceX is also developing an even more powerful rocket, the Starship, which is capable of a colossal 17 million pounds of thrust at launch. SpaceX is currently awaiting for permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to carry out the fifth test flight of the rocket, with late November currently looking like a possibility for launch.

Apple reportedly abandoned its Smart Ring project
There has been more talk than usual about smart rings this year. Samsung, a brand whose products always cause hype, launched its first device in the segment. Perhaps Apple fans are hoping for a similar product in the near future in response. However, recent reports suggest that Apple has abandoned any idea of developing a smart ring.
There are people who, for one reason or another, do not like smartwatches or smartbands. For those cases, smart rings are excellent alternative devices. These wearables can monitor your health and physical activity, in addition to notifying you about incoming messages or calls, in a lightweight, comfortable, and convenient form factor. Of course, you will sacrifice some advanced features due to the small size and lack of a screen. However, non-smartwatch users should already know this.
Apple may have abandoned the idea of a smart ring to focus on the Apple Watch series
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the potential capacity of smart rings to replace key functionality of smartwatches led Apple to cancel the project. The Cupertino giant would have decided to focus its efforts on Apple Watch devices. After all, a smart ring may not be that profitable for the company due to its potentially lower selling price than Apple Watches.
Plus, the smart ring segment is still a bit niche, so Apple still wouldn’t be sure there’s enough demand to make it worth participating. Still, it’s possible that Samsung’s entry will help liven things up a bit more.
Rumors about a possible Apple smart ring emerged at the beginning of the year, as soon as Samsung confirmed the development of its own. There was speculation that the wearable would allow users to control other Apple devices in one way or another. The company had even explicitly patented the idea. However, it appears that the company has discarded all such ideas.
The Smart ring segment is still niche, but things could change
Gurman claims the Apple Watch series will still feature Apple’s core health and fitness tracking wearables. It remains to be seen whether a potential boom in the segment will make Apple reconsider its decision. Sales of the first Galaxy Ring exceeded Samsung’s initial expectations. Also, recently, new competitive devices like the Oura Ring 4 arrived. Samsung and other brands could have an advantage over the empty space Apple leaves in the niche.

Off-Planet Dreams is a delightfully tricky Playdate platformer with invisible puzzles
Off-Planet Dreams gives you everything you need to succeed, if you really want that. Help is just a few button-presses away at (almost) all times. Because of that, it feels uniquely accessible for what it is — an “invisible puzzle platformer” designed to trip you up over and over again until you’ve learned enough from your mistakes to move forward. Depending on how you approach it, Off-Planet Dreams is either a trial-and-error nightmare loop or a relatively easygoing platform adventure. Or something between the two. I died 274 times in my first playthrough, if that’s any indication of how challenging it can be.
Off-Planet Dreams presents you (playing as a blob) with a grid and some floating doors, and says, essentially, ‘okay, now find your way out.’ There are platforms that form a path to each door, but all the platforms are invisible. This is where the game’s “difficulty is what you make of it” ethos comes in. You can commit to jumping into the abyss every time and hoping to land on a platform, memorizing each misstep so you know what not to do the next time around if you die, or you can choose one of the three available tools for some guidance. “Peek” will give you a quick glimpse of any platforms nearby, “Paint” will highlight any platform you’ve stepped on, and “Show” will reveal all of the platforms in that room.
Being stubborn, I was determined to get as far as I could without any help. But, I was humbled not too far in when I found myself trapped in Level 2-5 — a level with multiple sublevels that’ll repeatedly throw you back to its start if you go through the wrong doors. Here, I eventually caved and enabled “Show” just to give my brain some space to work out what the puzzle was without having to worry about remembering platforms. (When I finally figured it out, it wasn’t even that complicated. Sigh). After that point, I bounced between going unaided and using the “Paint” option as a little treat.
The game throws a curveball at you about halfway through when it introduces a new mechanic that requires the crank, which I thought was really clever once I got over the initial frustration of not knowing what the hell was going on. And further on, Off-Planet Dreams undergoes a stylistic shift that transforms it into something else entirely than what it was at the beginning. The developers wrote in the description that Off-Planet Dreams is “more than a grid of dots,” and they weren’t kidding. I had a lot of fun with it. You can get it now on the Playdate Catalog for $6.
