Coventry leading race to sign Frank Onyeka with Brentford exit now likely
Coventry City are now leading the race to sign a “dominant” 41-cap international, and they have held talks over a deal.
Coventry suffered a setback against Norwich City on Monday night, losing 2-1 at Carrow Road, but they are still setting the pace at the top of the Championship table, having taken 58 points from 29 games.
With the Sky Blues eight points clear of third-place Ipswich Town, and in a very strong position to gain promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, Frank Lampard probably doesn’t need to make too many changes to his squad this month, but there could be some new arrivals before the February 2nd deadline.
Lampard said: “So now there’s not a clear target of this position or that person, but, at the same time, for as long as the window is open I’m sure that if any option came our way that was a potential, and that clearly makes us better, then we’re not sort of closing the door on the window, so to speak, from our end yet.”
Last week, it was revealed Lampard’s side had launched an enquiry to sign Brentford’s Frank Onyeka, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit of the central midfielder.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Coventry are now leading the race to sign Onyeka, who is represented by the same agent as Lampard, and they have already held talks over a deal.
The Sky Blues have discussed a loan move and a permanent transfer, with the Brentford midfielder now looking likely to leave the Bees before the February 2nd transfer deadline.
Birmingham City and Sheffield United are also in the race for the 28-year-old, but the Championship leaders are currently in pole position in the race for his signature.

“Dominant” Onyeka could be solid signing for Coventry
Described as a “dominant” midfielder by former manager Thomas Frank, the Nigerian has struggled for game time at Brentford this season, making just six Premier League appearances, but he did catch the eye at AFCON.
The central midfielder was particularly impressive in the semi-final against Morocco, showcasing his defensive attributes by making three interceptions and two tackles, while also winning six of the nine duels he contested.
The Benin-City born maestro is established at international level, picking up 41 caps for Nigeria, and he has plenty of Premier League experience, having made 75 appearances in the top tier.
With Coventry vying for promotion, Onyeka could be a solid addition to the squad, and his top flight experience means he could be a useful signing next season, should Lampard’s side manage to reach the Premier League.
