The Outrun film review: This raw addiction story featuring standout star Saoirse Ronan feels scarily real

THE OUTRUN

“IT never gets easy… it just gets less hard,” is the advice recovering alcoholic Rona (Saoirse Ronan) is given in this adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir.

We first meet this intriguing character when she is living with her kind, God-fearing mum on the remote island of Orkney in Scotland.

The last two inches of Rona’s hair are bright blue, showing that a previous life of wild times and hedonistic nights may be growing out of her.

She works alone on the family farm while listening to dance tracks on her headphones and downing cans of full-fat Coke.

There’s something manic about her while doing the smallest of tasks.

She’s like a coiled spring, ready to shoot off any minute.

She is clever, fun and full of energy.

We soon see why. In various flashbacks, we follow a fully blue-haired Rona in London, living with boyfriend Daynin (Paapa Essiedu) and studying to be a scientist.

But she carries her demons, with the devil on her shoulder, alcohol.

As the flashbacks continue, we are shown more distressing examples of how Rona poured booze all over her lovely life and then just lit a match.

She is self-destructive and sometimes violent.

She falls into a canal, and puts herself in some terrifyingly risky situations.

It all feels scarily real.

Daynin, who clearly adores her, has his patience pushed to the limit and — as many who have dealt with addicts know — he finally realises there is nothing he can do.

Change has to come from her.

And then it does, when she wakes up in a hospital.

We then see her at Alcoholics Anonymous, where she shares her tales with other survivors.

All this is juxtaposed with Rona living her solitary life in the freezing weather of the Scottish Isles with not even a TV to distract her from herself.

Director Nora Fingscheidt gives this drama a steady hand, allowing the character of Rona to breathe without becoming a cliché.

It is raw and very real, perfectly balancing the monotony and frustration of recovery with the joy and hope it can bring.

The backdrop of the Scottish landscape is sublime, leaving you craving fresh air and the chill on your face.

The standout star though is Saoirse’s understated, outstanding performance.

She truly is something to behold.

★★☆☆☆

KNOWN for his Mafia movie The Godfather, director Francis Ford Coppola invested over £100million of his own money in this futuristic feature inspired by ancient Rome.

Premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May, it is set in a decaying metropolis where architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) is granted power to rebuild it with a new invention, as a sustainable Utopia.

His nemesis Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) seeks to thwart his plans.

Caught between them is the mayor’s daughter Julia (Game Of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel) who seeks her own path to happiness.

But Coppola’s attempt to tackle big ideas about humanity falls flat, with a bloated, confusing mess almost impossible to sit through.

The lead actors do their best but can’t save this overstuffed, overcrowded, downright ridiculous movie.

The most pretentious film ever? Probably not, but a contender.

Even with a star-studded secondary cast featuring Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf and Jon Voight, this vanity project is sure to leave viewers scratching their heads and more than a bit bored.

MY OLD ASS

★★★★☆

YOUTH is wasted on the young, right?

In this whip-smart coming-of-age comedy, we follow 18-year-old Elliott Labrant (Maisy Stella) who one day has a strange encounter with her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza).

Older Elliott arrives just as younger Elliott is indulging in some potent mushrooms on her birthday.

Wise words and life lessons ensue, most of which young, carefree Elliott naturally dismisses.

The teen just wants to leave her life on her family’s farm in a Canadian harbour town and like most kids her age, is focused on hanging with her mates, exploring her sexuality and eye-rolling at her mum.

But when older Elliott tells her to “stay away from anyone called Chad”, she tries to take it on board, especially when a farm help called Chad (Percy Hynes White) arrives and Elliott promptly falls in love.

No clear explanation is given as to how older Elliott can travel in time.

The film also doesn’t bother with negative consequences to sexual promiscuity or light drug use, which is refreshing.

The result is a charming, edgy film that will make you laugh and cry.

Shock moment MAFS UK couple rocked by another explosive row as bride WALKS OUT

ROCKY Married At First Sight couple Charlie and Eve have been hit by fresh blow after another explosive row.

In a teaser for Monday night’s show Eve could be seen storming off following their clash just days after Charlie returned to the experiment.

The couple sit at a table to discuss a new challenge which sees them write down questions for each other.

However, it appears Eve refuses to engage with it, leaving Charlie upset.

When Charlie giggles at Eve’s claim she always wants to fight with her, the latter snaps: “Don’t laugh at the way I feel.”

Charlie is then seen sobbing and says: Get out. Just get out.”

Eve says to camera, “I don’t think we’re healthy for each other,” before storming out.

Fuming, Charlie says: “I’m laying my heart out on the line here and I’m getting f**k all back.”

Out in the hallway, Eve can be seen leaning against the wall looking downcast.

The drama comes just days after Charlie walked out on their honeymoon last week following multiple rows.

They seemed like a picture perfect couple on their wedding day, and they even confessed to having sex on their wedding night.

But things turned frosty on their honeymoon when Eve took a step back and wanted to spend time apart.

Every time Charlie asked Eve what was wrong the pair ended up in an argument.

Following their tetchy honeymoon, Charlie refused point blank to enter the couple’s apartments on return to the UK and said she was quitting.

She said: “I’ll be leaving the experiment.

“They’ll be no moving into any apartment, nothing, goodbye.

“I’ll just enjoy my evening alone. Like I have done the whole f**** honeymoon.”

But she soon returned and they vowed to work through their issues.

Eve said: “We really upset each other Charlie, like really upset each other.”

Charlie replied: “I’m a really good person I promise”.

She continued: “I just want to leave it in Mexico, I am sorry for how it ended up. I think maybe we went to quick with things.”

Vanessa Feltz sends warning to Phillip Schofield as he announces TV comeback

Vanessa Feltz sends warning to Phillip Schofield as he announces TV comeback

Vanessa Feltz addressed Phillip Schofield’s controversial return to TV 16 months after exiting This Morning over his widely reported affair scandal.

On Tuesday (24 September), it was announced that the former ITV host had spent the summer secretly filming a three-part series, titled Cast Away, which sees him spending 10 days trying to survive on an island in the Indian Ocean.

It will mark the presenter’s first return to TV since he admitted to having an affair with a younger male colleague he worked with on the ITV programme.

Addressing the affair in the series trailer, Schofield asks the camera: “I know what I did was unwise, but is it enough to absolutely destroy someone?”

Feltz, a colleague and friend of Schofield, warned that there could be a “risk” with his reality TV stint, but she will be supporting him along the way.

“Any reality TV show anyone does is a risk, that’s the whole point, you could come out brilliantly and everyone could fall in love with you and you could impress them to the max,” she told Metro.co.uk.

The presenter wished Schofield “all the luck in the world” and said he should be allowed to do whatever he wants “to make him feel better” in the aftermath of the scandal.

Feltz continued: “Obviously I haven’t seen [Cast Away], so I don’t know how he copes in isolation for all those days, and whether it turns out to be a good thing or a bad thing.”

“But he is a very seasoned TV professional, and I really hope that it’s the right thing for him, and it does him the power of good, that he personally enjoys it and that the viewers enjoy it and that it makes him feel better and it makes everybody feel better. That’s what I would like. I’d like it to be a success.”

Since the news broke, Feltz said she hasn’t been in touch with Schofield because she doesn’t want to “jump on the bandwagon of messaging”.

She explained: “When there’s a story about me in the media, suddenly everybody that I haven’t heard from for ages jumps in and says something, and you know they’re only doing it because they want to tell their friend, ‘I spoke to Vanessa, and she says this, or she says that, or she is feeling well or not feeling well,’ or whatever it is, and I always think, ‘Oh, god come on, be a bit more subtle than that.’”

“So no, I haven’t messaged because what would I message? I mean, obviously he knows I wish him well, we’re good friends.”

Feltz joined This Morning in 1992 and Schofield joined a decade later. Since Schofield’s exit last year, his presenting partner Holly Willoughby left the show, with Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard taking over their roles.

At the time of his sensational departure, the married presenter said he had a “consensual on-off relationship” that was “unwise, but not illegal”.

He apologised for the affair, which happened while he was married to his wife of 30 years, Stephanie Lowe.

Speaking about huge changes rocking the morning programme, Feltz said it was “sad” to see colleagues leave.

“I was there on [Schofield’s] very first day on This Morning, and when they showed the footage on his 20 year anniversary there I was sitting on the sofa about a yard away from him on the very first of his day broadcasting.”

“So I’ve been there a very long time and when people that you’ve worked with leave it’s always sad, just like it would be working in any office with long-term work mates that you like. So that was a shame.”

I'm A Celebrity’s iconic bushtucker trials under threat as stars to be allowed Ozempic weight loss jab

I’M A Celebrity stars will be allowed controversial Ozempic injections in camp.

The diabetes jab, also used for weight loss, will be given off camera to any celeb with a prescription on the show, hosted by Ant and Dec.

Contestants have found the eating challenges hard to swallow for 24 years — but they would be all but impossible for those with zero appetite from getting the Ozempic jab on the show.

Clashes between “hangry” stars desperate for their next meal could also become a thing of the past, to viewers’ dismay.

ITV medics are willing to administer the drug off-camera, and outside camp, to any celeb with a doctors’ note or prescription explaining they are already on Ozempic.

That is in keeping with ITV’s rules on medicines rather than being a new rule for the so-called wonder drug. All celebs taking part in the show must fully disclose their medical history.

A source explained: “The drug is already controversial after being exploited by stars for weight loss rather than diabetes, but it’s not for ITV to pass judgment.

“Any celeb on medication while in the jungle goes to ITV’s off-camera medical team as often as they need.

“It will be no different with Ozempic. So long as celebs have a proper doctors’ note, and the drug has been prescribed, they will be able to get their regular injection as normal.

“It won’t just be lying around the camp. Ozempic pens have to be stored in the fridge so they will have to be safely stored under lock and key off-site.

“The same applies for other drugs that can produce weight-loss results including Mounjaro and Wegovy.

“This year’s line-up hasn’t been finalised but bosses are almost certain someone will be on Ozempic.”

Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse set to waltz into I’m A Celeb jungle just a year after major health scare.mp4

If any campmates are taking the drug they may still need lower dose jabs during the series.

It is not recommended to stop taking Ozempic overnight as it can cause blood-sugar fluctuations or severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Instead users should taper off their dosage over a few weeks.

Those in talks for this year include singer Tulisa Contostavlos and foul-mouthed influencer GK Barry.

Boxer Tommy Fury, Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall and Strictly’s Oti Mabuse are also set to star.

There is no suggestion they, or hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, take Ozempic.

Originally created to combat Type 2 diabetes, the drug has become hugely popular with celebs.

Popular as they work

By Lizzie Parry, Head of Health

WEIGHT-loss jabs such as Ozempic are a class of drugs called GLP-1 that help people slim by mimicking fullness hormones.

Their popularity has exploded because they work so well.

Studies suggest they may also slash the risk of serious heart diseases and cancers.

The NHS mainly prescribes them to people with type 2 diabetes, and the obese. Private clinics sell them to almost anyone who wants to lose weight.

The scale of their use is unknown although hundreds of thousands of Britons are likely to be using them.

They must be taken regularly to work and are usually self-injected once a day or once a week.

Side-effects include sickness, diarrhoea and stomach pains.

Actress Rebel Wilson, Tesla tycoon Elon Musk, and chat-show queen Oprah Winfrey have said they take it for weight loss.

But there can be serious side- effects. Actor Stephen Fry stopped taking the jabs as he was left vomiting four times a day.

This month model Lottie Moss, 26, urged followers not to take Ozempic after she suffered a seizure from a high dose.

Politicians are keen for the public to decide by asking their doctor if they should take the drug, and not just be swayed by social media ads.

Bushtucker Trials in the last series saw winner Sam Thompson almost vomit and Reform MP Nigel Farage try to scoff a “four-penis pizza”.

Series 24 is expected to start in mid November.

An ITV source said: “As part of the well-established and robust casting process each celebrity has a full medical assessment to make sure they are fit to take part.”
