Colleen Hoover’s Controversial $90M Hit Is Blowing Up Streaming in America

Published

on

Joan-Rivers

Right now at the box office, Colleen Hoover’s latest adaptation, Reminders of Him, is continuing to perform admirably against tough competition, such as the hit new sci-fi flick Project Hail Mary. Against a reported budget of $25 million, the film has earned just under $60 million worldwide, split between $38 million in domestic revenue and an additional $21 million from overseas markets. Starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, and directed by Vanessa Caswill, the film is unlikely to reach the box office heights of Hoover’s previous two adaptations, one of which is quietly proving popular on streaming.

Regretting You, Hoover’s second adaptation, released in October 2025, earned a global haul of $90 million during its theatrical run, a total unlikely to be hit by Reminders of Him. Tripling its reported budget of $30 million, the film starred an eye-catching cast and became a hit with fans of the Hoover novels. From a script penned by Susan McMartin, the film stars the likes of Allison Williams as Morgan Grant, Mckenna Grace as Clara Grant, Dave Franco as Jonah Sullivan, Mason Thames as Miller Adams, Scott Eastwood as Chris Grant, Willa Fitzgerald as Jenny Davidson, and Clancy Brown as Hank Adams Sr.

Although fans appreciated the effort, critics weren’t so glowing in their reception of Regretting You. In Isabella Soaresreview of the movie for Collider, she called Regretting You “messy,” adding, “Although the cast does what they can with a script that never cuts deeper than the surface, their performances aren’t enough to give Regretting You the emotional resonance expected from a story like this.” Despite this poor response from critics, Regretting You continues to prove popular, scoring a place on the current Paramount+ top ten in the U.S.

With the three adaptations all proving box office successes so far, and with Hoover’s books continuing to sell millions of copies, we are merely in the early stages of her impact on Hollywood. Up next is Verity, an adaptation of Hoover’s 2018 psychological thriller of the same name, which features the on-screen talents of Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordóva, and Brady Wagner. Written by Nick Antosca and directed by Michael Showalter, with the latter previously working with Hathaway on Prime Video’s The Idea of You, the movie is scheduled to release on October 2, 2026.

Regretting You is streaming on Paramount+. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.

10 Forgotten ’80s Cartoons That Deserve Another Look

Published

on

An armored dinosaur with a rider

The 1980s saw many major changes to the entertainment industry. One of the biggest shakeups was when President Ronald Reagan deregulated advertising in children’s cartoons, resulting in a new wave of cartoons that could best be called half-hour commercials. This helped accelerate the rise of toy-driven franchises such as The Transformers, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and G.I. Joe.

Among these juggernauts of popular culture were numerous other television shows that have since faded from public knowledge. However, with how varied and imaginative 1980s cartoons could be, there are more than a few that are worth revisiting.

‘Dino-Riders’ (1988)

The Valorians are a peaceful, human-like alien species whose homeworld has been conquered by beast-like aliens called Rulons. One Valorian, Questar (Dan Gilvezan), leads a group to escape the Rulons using experimental time-traveling technology, which sends them and a group of Rulons led by Krulos (Frank Welker) back to prehistoric Earth. Thus, the war continues in this new environment, and both sides, through friendship or enslavement, use dinosaurs to augment their forces.

Dino-Riders is simultaneously stupid and badass, which is what makes the cheesy ’80s show so enjoyable. It knows exactly what it is and goes all in on its premise, giving us a good versus evil plot augmented with dinosaurs mounted with giant lasers. Despite a successful toy line, the show sadly only ran for 14 episodes, but in today’s era of binge-watching, that can be cleared pretty quickly.

‘Blackstar’ (1981)

John Blackstar (George DiCenzo) is an astronaut who gets sucked into a black hole and, rather than die, is transported to the planet Sagar in another universe. There, he learns that the planet is ruled by a tyrannical Overlord (Alan Oppenheimer) who seeks to combine two magical swords into a powerful weapon called the Powerstar. John acquires one of the weapons, the Starsword, and joins the rebellion to overthrow the Overlord and maybe find a way home.

Blackstar was one of Filmation’s earliest shows, and in many ways can be looked at as a precursor to He-Man. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy in its 13 episodes, such as its pulp sci-fi plot and the various creatures and magic that bring Sagar to life. The main cast are also pretty well-rounded: John is a good combination of physical and mental abilities, while his allies include a dragon-horse mount named Warlock, a shapeshifter named Klone (Patrick Pinney), and Mara (Linda Gary), an enchantress.

‘SilverHawks’ (1986)

Mon*Star (Earl Hammond) is the leader of a galaxy-spanning crime syndicate that terrorizes the Limbo galaxy. To stop him, a team of specialized police officers is assembled and given cybernetic enhancements to become “part metal, part real.” Named the SilverHawks, and led by the officer who originally apprehended Mon*Star, Commander Stargazer (Bob McFadden), the team travel from planet to planet, restoring order and working to bring down Mon*Star’s criminal empire.

SilverHawks was produced by Rankin/Bass, known for their holiday specials and the popular Thundercats cartoon, and while not as iconic as those other accomplishments, there’s plenty to enjoy about the show. The idea of superhero galactic police officers is one that lends itself to a lot of ideas, from galaxy-destroying superweapons to evil clones of the SilverHawks and mundane apprehension and transportation of criminals. It also helps that the characters are fun and memorable in their own ways, such as Bluegrass (Larry Kenney), the only flightless member of the team, who makes up for this with his piloting skills and cowboy persona.

‘Bravestarr’ (1987–1988)

The planet of New Texas is rich in a mineral called Kerium, which can be used for interstellar travel. This results in an influx of settlers who come to mine the valuable mineral, but they are plagued by outlaws like the Broncosaur Stampede (Alan Oppenheimer) and his Carrion Bunch gang, led by the wicked Tex Hex (Charlie Adler). Fortunately, New Texas has a hero in the form of Marshal Bravestarr (Pat Fraley), who can call upon spirit animals to give him the strength of a bear, the speed of a puma, the eyes of a hawk, and the ears of a wolf.

Bravestarr was the final show released by Filmation, and what a way to send off such an influential legacy. This show is a good one for them to go out on because it highlights their strengths as a company: the characters have cool designs, and the world is a good mix of science-fiction concepts with cheesy cartoon writing. The best example is Bravestarr’s horse and partner, Thirty/Thirty (Ed Gilbert), who can stand upright and fight the bad guys with his Kerium-powered gun, which he affectionately calls Sara Jane.

Would You Survive?

Five universes. Five completely different ways the future went wrong — or sideways, or up in flames. Only one of them is the world your instincts were built for. Ten questions will figure out which dystopia, galaxy, or desert wasteland you’d actually make it out of alive.

01

You sense something is deeply wrong with the world around you. What do you do?
The first instinct is often the truest one.

02

In a world of scarcity, what resource do you guard most fiercely?
What we protect reveals what we believe survival actually requires.

03

What kind of threat keeps you up at night?
Fear is useful data — if you’re honest about what you’re actually afraid of.

04

Which of these comes most naturally to you?
Your strongest skill is your best survival asset — use it accordingly.

How do you deal with authority you don’t trust?
Every dystopia has a power structure. Your approach to it determines everything.

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. Read all five — your result is the one that resonates most deeply.

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things, the places where the official version doesn’t quite line up. In the Matrix, that instinct is the difference between life and permanent digital sedation. You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you. The machines built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you. You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon. You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it. You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely. You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer. In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional. You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either. In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards. Patience, discipline, pattern recognition, political awareness, and an understanding that the long game matters more than any single victory. Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic, earn its respect, and perhaps, in time, reshape it entirely.

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way. You’re someone who finds meaning in being part of something larger than yourself. You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken. Whatever you are, you fight. And in Star Wars, that willingness is what makes the difference.

‘Bionic Six’ (1987)

Jack Bennett (John Stephenson) is a test pilot who is given bionic enhancements by genius roboticist Professor Amadeus Sharp (Alan Oppenheimer), allowing him to fight against the plans of the evil Doctor Scarab (Jim MacGeorge). One day, while vacationing in the Himalayas, Jack and his family are caught in an avalanche that exposes them to radiation, and though Jack is fine, the others fall into comas. Sharp theorizes that Jack’s bionic enhancements protected him from the radiation, so he augments the rest of the family, who join Jack in his heroism.

Bionic Six is what you get when you combine the superhero family dynamic of The Fantastic Four with the sci-fi premise of The Six Million Dollar Man. Each member of the Bennett family is given their own unique enhancement, ensuring that they can work together as an effective team that complements each other, while their varied personalities also lead to realistic conversations when hanging out as a family. The show was animated by TMS Entertainment, the same company behind Akira, so it goes without saying that the animation is gorgeous and highly detailed.

5

‘Thundarr the Barbarian’ (1980–1981)

Thundarr the Barbarian stands in the jungle

In the year 1994, a passing celestial object shatters the moon and sets off a chain of events that destroys human civilization. 2000 years later, the survivors now live in a post-apocalyptic world, inhabited by mutants and ruled over by wizards who combine science and sorcery. Amidst this chaos travels three heroes; Thundarr the Barbarian (Robert Ridgely), the wheeler of the Sunsword; Ookla the Mok (Henry Corden), a powerful feline-like mutant; and Princess Ariel (Nellie Bellflower), a powerful sorceress.

Thundarr the Barbarian can best be described as Conan the Barbarian meets Star Wars, and is as glorious as it sounds. Along with playing into beloved sci-fi and sword and sorcery tropes, the show had pretty strong writing that led to engaging episodes, solid action sequences, and inventive character designs courtesy of comic book legends Jack Kirby and Alex Toth. Sadly, the show was prematurely canceled, so the network could push the less violent Laverne & Shirley in the Army, but what we got is sure to entertain anyone looking for a good sword and sorcery adventure.

4

‘The Mysterious Cities of Gold’ (1982–1983)

the-mysterious-cities-of-gold

Esteban (Masako Nozawa/Shiraz Adam) is an orphaned Spanish boy who possesses a moon-shaped amulet and the ability to summon the sun. He joins a morally dubious navigator named Mendoza (Isao Sasaki/Howard Ryshpan) on an expedition to the New World to seek out the Seven Cities of Gold, though Esteban hopes to find his missing father. Along the way, they are joined by Zia (Rei Sakuma/Janice Chaikelson), an Inca girl who was kidnapped and taken back to Spain, and Tao (Juko Hori/Adrian Knight), the last member of an ancient civilization.

The Mysterious Cities of Gold combines South American history with intriguing mystery and science fiction elements, resulting in a one-of-a-kind adventure show. You feel like you’re exploring new lands alongside the characters, and get a sense of accomplishment when more and more pieces of the puzzle are revealed. Each episode also had a short segment that went into more detail about some of the topics explored, which ensures that the kids get their mandatory bit of educational value in this essential animated show.

3

‘The World of David the Gnome’ (1985)

David the Gnome with his wife Lisa

David (José María Cordero/Tom Bosley) is a 399-year-old forest gnome doctor who has made it his life’s mission to help any animal, gnome, or human in need. Aided by his loving wife Lisa (Matilde Conesa/Jane Woods), and his fox friend, Swift (Ramón Langa/Vlasta Vrána), he travels the world to help the sick and injured, solve personal problems where he can, and thwart the plans of Hollar (Paco Hernández/A.J. Henderson), a wicked troll. In between his adventures, David loves to educate humans about the secret lives of gnomes.

The World of David the Gnome is one of those shows that managed to combine mandatory educational material with clever writing and inventive scenarios. David’s lessons about gnome culture foster a relationship between him and the viewer and make gnomes feel like a living, breathing culture in a fantastical world, while the adventures draw from mythology and fairy tales to make challenging but lighthearted obstacles for our heroes to overcome. The show also never talked down to kids and knew when to take itself seriously, as best seen in its finale, one of the saddest episodes of any children’s cartoon.

2

‘Ulysses 31’ (1981)

The characters from Ulysses 31

Having successfully negotiated peace on the planet Troy, Ulysses (Osamu Kobayashi/Claude Giraud/Matt Birman) is ready to get back to his home on Earth. However, he accidentally offends the Gods of the Olympus galaxy when he saves his son, Telemachus (Yū Mizushima/Séverine Morisot/Anick Faris), and two blue-skinned aliens, from being sacrificed to a robotic cyclops. Now trapped in the Olympus galaxy, and with his crew frozen in suspended animation, Ulysses must pilot his ship, The Odysseus, from planet to planet until he can find the Kingdom of Hades, where he can hopefully save his crew and get back to Earth.

Ulysses 31 is a stellar example of how to take a famous mythological tale and give it a new spin. Each episode features a creative blending of mythology and sci-fi concepts, brought to life with gorgeous animation courtesy of French and Japanese studios. The writing is where the show really shines, capturing the atmosphere and pathos of a Greek tragedy, which makes you empathize more with the characters and admire how, no matter how much the gods torment him, Ulysses remains committed to his quest to get home.

1

‘The Raccoons’ (1985–1992)

Ralph, Burt, and Melissa Raccoon standing together

Burt Racoon (Len Carlson) is an impulsive yet big-hearted raccoon living with other anthropomorphic animals in the Evergreen Forest. Most days, he can be found going on adventures with his friends: married couple Ralph (Bob Dermer) and Melissa Raccoon (Linda Feige and Susan Roman), level-headed sheepdog Schaeffer (Carl Banas), and neurotic aardvark Cedric Sneer (Marvin Goldhar). However, the forest is often threatened by Cedric’s father, Cyril Sneer (Michael Magee), a millionaire who is always looking for ways to make a buck and won’t hesitate to exploit the land and people around him to do so.

The Raccoons is one of those shows that is surprisingly more mature and nuanced than it initially seems. The stories covered a wide range of topics, from standard messages for kids like protecting the environment and not smoking, to more complex ones like gambling addictions and adoptions. The characters all grew and changed over the course of the show, with the best example being Cyril, who goes from being a standard greedy villain to a complex antihero shaped by his upbringing.

Police Address Rumors Woman’s Dead Body Is Nancy Guthrie

Published

FBI reward notice for Nancy Guthrie

Nancy Guthrie has been missing for almost two months, and due to the lack of substantial leads in the investigation, many have used the stagnant developments to push their own conspiracy theories.

One recent rumor has prompted local authorities to directly address it, as the discovery of a woman’s dead body has sparked online speculation it could be the missing 84-year-old.

Police Address Rumors That Woman’s Dead Body Found Is Nancy Guthrie

On Friday, March 28, the Scottsdale Police Department shared a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, regarding the discovery of an unidentified woman’s body in an Arizona canal about 100 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson home.

“A death investigation is underway after an adult woman’s body was recovered from a canal near Indian Bend and Hayden Roads on March 28th,” the statement began. “Police and fire personnel were first called to the area around 8 a.m. after someone walking along the canal saw the body in the water.”

“Scottsdale detectives and crime scene specialists responded to the scene to collect evidence and thoroughly document the scene,” the statement continued.

Authorities also shared the condition of the body and confirmed they are working to determine the identity of the dead woman.

“Due to the condition of the body, investigators are initially unable to confirm if there are traumatic injuries present. The investigation is still in the early stages as detectives work to confirm the identity of the person and how they ended up in the canal,” the statement read.

When an X user asked if the unidentified body was connected to Guthrie’s disappearance, the Scottsdale Police Department responded that it was “not related” to Guthrie’s disappearance, which is being led by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Retired FBI Agent Shared That Guthrie Investigation Is ‘Much Harder’ As Case Lingers On

On March 17, CBS News spoke with retired FBI supervisory special agent Lance Leising, who told the outlet that it will be difficult to keep the investigation going without any new leads.

“The lack of meaningful leads. That’s the initial thing it says to me,” Leising said of the investigation seemingly being at a standstill. “It becomes much harder to keep the investigation going, keep it current, and fight for new leads.”

However, he did note that the lack of leads doesn’t mean that all hope is lost in finding Guthrie because the process “takes a while.”

“Maybe you’ve got multiple people within the same DNA family that could potentially be suspects. You have to investigate each one of those independently,” he said.

“I’d like to be hopeful that — and I’m sure the family is incredibly hopeful — that the silence is because they’re on to something,” Leising continued. “They just need to investigate harder.”

Dates Of Two Surveillance Videos Have Taken Guthrie Investigation In New Direction

According to PEOPLE, investigators are now paying close attention to video footage from the weeks before Guthrie disappeared, specifically on January 11 and January 24.

Neighbors in her Tucson community say authorities have recently asked about surveillance footage tied to those dates, suggesting they could be the key to determining what led up to Guthrie’s disappearance.

The January 11 footage was previously requested by authorities, specifically between 9 p.m. and midnight, pointing to a precise window they believe could contain relevant activity.

Additionally, footage from January 31 between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. was also requested, which was the day before Guthrie was last seen.

The renewed attention follows previously released footage showing a masked individual at Guthrie’s front door in the early hours of February 1, who was described as having an average build, carrying a backpack, and appearing to be armed.

Pima County Sheriff Reveals Authorities ‘Know Why’ Nancy Guthrie Was Abducted

Savannah Guthrie and her mother, Nancy Guthrie

Sheriff Chris Nanos of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared in an interview with NBC News that he and other members of the sheriff’s department believe they “know why” Guthrie was kidnapped from her home.

“We believe we know why [the kidnapper] did this and we believe that it was targeted, but we’re not 100% sure of that,” Nanos said on March 12. “So it’d be silly to tell people, ‘Don’t worry about it. You’re not his target.’ You could be. Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No. Keep your wits about you.”

Speaking about the details of a possible motive, Sheriff Nanos stopped short of sharing them publicly.

“I think it’s come out from day one,” he told NBC News. “I think day one, we had some strong beliefs about what happened, and those beliefs haven’t diminished. I’m not going to get into those theories. We have our beliefs. Everybody else has theirs.”

Savannah Guthrie Announced Her Official Return To The ‘Today’ Show

On Friday, March 27, Hoda Kotb, who conducted Savannah Guthrie’s first sit-down interview since her mother’s disappearance, shared on the “Today” show that she would officially make her return to the show on Monday, April 6.

In the third part of the interview, Savannah explained her decision to return to the show as her mother, who disappeared on February 1, remains missing.

“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” she said of returning to her co-anchor spot. “But I can’t not come back because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now. I want to smile.”

“And when I do, it will be real. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer,” she continued. “And being there is joyful. And when it’s not, I’ll say so. I have been so grateful to have this family. I consider this my family, my greater family, and when times are hard, you want to be with your family. And I want to be with my family.”

Savannah admitted how difficult it will be to return to airwaves in the midst of such an extreme personal tragedy.

“I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try. I’m not gonna be the same, but maybe it’s like that old poem, more beautiful in the broken places,” she told Kotb.

on

Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson in His Dark Materials Season 3

Fantasy shows have changed a lot in the modern TV era because television now gives storytellers the time to build detailed worlds and follow characters through long journeys. Instead of focusing only on magic or battles, many of these series explore how power, loyalty, and belief influence the choices people make.

Kings fight to keep control, ordinary individuals discover abilities that place them at the center of conflict, and entire societies struggle with forces they barely understand. Therefore, these fantasy shows that I have zeroed in on below balance imagination with meaningful storytelling, and create worlds that are complex and somehow still feel realistic. Lock in.

Carnival Row takes place in the Burgue, a city attempting to absorb refugees from magical lands destroyed during imperial war. Among these displaced beings is Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne), a faerie who once fought against human forces before escaping to the city in search of safety. At the same time, detective Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom) investigates murders connected to rising tension between humans and magical immigrants. His investigation slowly reveals that fear has begun to shape everyday life in the Burgue, placing magical creatures under suspicion. Through this setting, the narrative presents prejudice shaping social order.

As Philo continues his investigation, he uncovers evidence that influential figures benefit from maintaining hostility between communities. Meanwhile, Vignette joins groups resisting the restrictions imposed on magical refugees. These responses reveal two different approaches to injustice: reform within the system and rebellion against it.

‘Britannia’ (2018–2021)

Kelly Reilly rides a horse for the series, Britannia Image via Sky Atlantic, Prime Video

Britannia begins during the Roman invasion of the British Isles, where competing tribal groups struggle to defend their land against the organized power of Rome. One of the central figures is Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox), a young girl chosen by the Druids to undergo training that separates her from ordinary tribal life. Her journey gradually reveals the influence that spiritual leaders maintain over the region’s political decisions. At the same time, Roman commander Aulus Plautius (David Morrissey) attempts to conquer the territory through strategy and psychological manipulation. These parallel forces introduce belief guiding political authority.

As the invasion continues, Roman discipline clashes with the spiritual traditions that guide the tribal communities. Cait’s training forces her to confront difficult choices about loyalty and sacrifice, while Aulus seeks control through calculated displays of power. These opposing methods gradually reveal how leadership can emerge from both faith and ambition. Through this tension, the series presents power shaped by belief systems and shows how societies organize themselves around different ideas of authority.

The narrative of American Gods begins when Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) leaves prison and accepts employment from a mysterious traveler named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). As they move across the United States, Wednesday reveals that ancient gods brought by immigrants now struggle to survive in a society that has forgotten them. These forgotten deities face competition from modern forces representing technology, media, and surveillance. Through this premise, the series presents a belief sustaining divine existence.

As Shadow travels with Wednesday, he gradually discovers that the conflict between old and new gods extends beyond mythology into the structure of modern life. Each deity survives only as long as people continue to believe in the ideas it represents. Meanwhile, Wednesday prepares for a larger confrontation intended to restore influence to the older powers.

Alongside classmates such as Alice Quinn (Olivia Taylor Dudley), he studies complex spellcraft that gradually reveals the risks associated with manipulating reality. These lessons introduce knowledge requiring discipline.

As Quentin and his friends advance in their training, they discover that magical education exposes them to threats from both supernatural entities and their own mistakes. The group eventually encounters a dangerous figure known as the Beast, whose power shows what happens when magical ability operates without restraint. Through these experiences, the students realize that their education carries consequences beyond personal achievement. The series, therefore, presents power demanding accountability.

Through this succession dispute, the narrative establishes inheritance shaping political conflict.

As Viserys grows older, rival factions within the royal court begin preparing for the moment when the throne becomes vacant. Game of Thrones begins with the noble Stark family of the North, particularly Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), who accepts the position of Hand of the King in the capital city of King’s Landing. ces on DigitalM. Night Shyamalan’s Career-Saving 94-Minute Thriller That Grossed 20x Its Budget Resurfaces on Digital

Olivia DeJonge as Caitlin Attwater

When his career spiraled out of control in the early 2010s, M. Night Shyamalan made the safe choice to turn director-for-hire. Instead of trying to get his original scripts made, he agreed to direct a vehicle for Will Smith and Jaden Smith. The star vehicle in question, After Earth, was put together less like a movie from the heart than a carefully studied project that could take the younger Smith’s career to the next level following a well-received debut with The Karate Kid. However, the experiment ended up backfiring massively; not only did Jaden never headline a movie again, but Shyamalan found himself in a worse position than he’d ever been in professionally. This time, he didn’t take the safe route. Instead, he went back to basics and put his money where his mouth is. Shyamalan’s follow-up film emerged as a hit and helped revive his now-thriving career.

The movie is over a decade old now but remains well-liked on home video. It recently witnessed a spike in viewership, emerging as one of the most-watched titles on the domestic Google Play Store chart. Unlike Shyamalan’s previous movies, which usually attracted A-list talent and were typically expensive enough to afford top-tier stars, his 2015 comeback vehicle was headlined by two child actors. The biggest name in the cast was Kathryn Hahn, who appeared only briefly. The movie cost $5 million to produce, which Shyamalan put up himself in order to have skin in the game, and was subsequently picked up by Blumhouse and distributed by Universal.

Shyamalan Is Putting Together a Movie With Jake Gyllenhaal Next

We’re talking, of course, about The Visit. Originally thought to be titled Sundowning, the movie follows two young children who are left in the care of their grandparents, only to discover sinister goings-on at the house. The movie was filmed in the found-footage format, which was hugely popular in that era thanks to hits such as Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, and Unfriended. It ended up grossing nearly $100 million worldwide and putting Shyamalan’s career back on track. The Visit now holds a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “The Visit provides horror fans with a satisfying blend of thrills and laughs — and also signals a welcome return to form for writer-director M. Night Shyamalan.” Shyamalan went on to make a handful of hits over the next decade, and is now putting together the supernatural romance film Remain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and scheduled for release in February 2027. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

The Best Vampire Horror of the Decade Is Dominating 2 Streamers at Once

Published

on

Joan-Rivers

The last few years have been great for the horror genre, not only movies like Weapons, Bring Her Back, MaXXXine, and more entertained audiences in theaters and later at home, but features like The Substance, Frankenstein, and Sinners have made a mark during the Oscars as well. Horror fans around the world are having a great time with numerous original ideas making it to the big screen as well as franchises like Scream, Terrifier, 28 Years Later, and more bringing out fresh installments.

Further, Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler made history at this year’s Oscars with their supernatural horror, Sinners. The movie went on to bag 18 nominations and won four, including Best Actor for Jordan, who played dual roles, and Best Original Screenplay for Coogler. It’s brilliant to see that a movie is not only loved by the critics but is appreciated by fans as well, which is reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes scores – 97% from critics and 96% from audiences. As for its earnings, it made $370 million worldwide against a $100 million budget.

Now, the movie has added another feather to its cap. Sinners has maintained its top spot on HBO Max for more than 55 days and on Amazon Prime for more than 60 days, as per FlixPatrol. This is a testament to fans’ love for the movie and its themes. Sinners beautifully blends historical realism, blues music, and supernatural elements. It’s visually stunning as Coogler decides to continuously play with the aspect ratio and deeper themes of cultural appropriation, resilience, and cultural erasure. However, the musical elements in the feature are a clear standout. It has a brilliant cast consisting of strong performers, including Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

“I think he’s incredibly talented, and I think he’s one of the only people who can do something unique and do it justice, and he’s completely obsessed with the series. He’s one of the most talented filmmakers who’s out there. The fact that Chris [Carter] has him as the person who’s going to be involved in the franchise is awesome, and a huge gift. You guys will see what he has in mind, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.”

Sam Raimi’s Long-Awaited Return to Horror Is Officially a Global Streaming Hit

Published

on

Joan-Rivers

Sam Raimi is the visionary mind behind some of our favorite horror films, like Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell, and Army of Darkness. The director makes his films a chaotic carnival ride with large helpings of over-the-top gore, interesting camera angles, and wide use of practical effects that make fans jump in their seats. Perhaps a more contemporary audience knows him from the Spider-Man trilogy and Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

While the Doctor Strange sequel did not satiate the audience’s appetite for the multiverse, it did bring together Raimi and actor Rachel McAdams, who plays Christine Palmer in the MCU. The two recently collaborated on a new horror flick, Send Help, which is creating waves with the audience. The survival horror marks the director’s first R-rated film in over a decade.

The movie became a commercial and critical success, gathering praise for Raimi’s vision, gross-out scenes, and lead performances by McAdams and Dylan O’Brien. The movie has grossed $94 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. It also impressed the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 93%. Now the movie is entertaining fans worldwide, as Send Help is the #1 movie globally on Apple TV, per FlixPatrol.

Is ‘Send Help’ Worth Your Time?

Yes, whether you’re a Sam Raimi fan or a casual viewer who loves dark comedy and R-rated horror, Send Help is a quick and decent watch. The movie follows Linda (McAdams) and her arrogant boss, Bradley (O’Brien), who, after a plane crash, are stranded on a deserted island. Things take a turn when the two turn their workplace power dynamic into a fight for survival and a twisted battle of wits. Collider’s Aidan Kelley writes in his review, “The story and the tone of said story may be a bit all over the place, but it’s not at all an unpleasant time spending a trip on the beach with these two characters, as the “will they/won’t they kill each other” chemistry that McAdams and O’Brien have is electric.” Further noting,

“Throughout all its faults, like an inconsistent script and overall tone, Send Help is also a hell of a lot of fun with two dynamite performances. It’s also one that, more often than not, plays to Sam Raimi’s scripts, whose previous horror hits have always been firmly in the fun-and-campy category. It may not be the terrifying marvel some Raimi fans are hoping for, but it’s still an entertaining enough watch that makes an SOS unnecessary.”

Send Help can be purchased on Apple TV Store. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.

One of the Greatest Franchise Reboots of the 21st Century Is Taking Over Streaming

Published

on

Tony Bellew as 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan in Creed

Director Ryan Coogler‘s rise through the Hollywood ranks has been nothing short of remarkable. He went from being a passionate film student putting together a scrappy indie set in his hometown to commanding an extremely rare level of creative freedom in the upper echelons of the industry. Coogler’s latest film is Sinners, which set a new record for the most Oscar nominations earned by a single film, with 16 nods at this year’s ceremony. Sinners defied the odds to become a box-office hit, validating Warner Bros.’ bold decision to give Coogler a deal that will see the film’s rights revert to him in 25 years. But Coogler’s success wasn’t earned overnight; he built toward it methodically, without compromising on the principles that got him a seat at the table in the first place.

Sinners was, in many ways, a step down in terms of scale for Coogler. He was coming off two mega-budget Marvel movies — Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — that grossed around $2 billion in combined worldwide box office revenue against a combined reported budget of nearly $500 million. Sinners made nearly $400 million against a reported budget of $100 million. However, Coogler didn’t simply go from his small-budget indie Fruitvale Station to directing Black Panther. There was an all-important stepping-stone movie as well; this was the movie that proved to studios that Coogler could work inside the system and still deliver crowd-pleasing hits. The movie in question is having a resurgence on home video, over a decade after its theatrical run.

Here’s the Franchise Reboot That’s Delivering a Knockout Performance on iTunes

We’re talking, of course, about Creed. Starring Michael B. Jordan, who recently won an Oscar for his dual performance in Sinners, Creed served as a reboot of the Rocky franchise and brought back Sylvester Stallone as the iconic boxer. Stallone received an Oscar nomination for his performance, while the film itself earned a “Certified Fresh” 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator’s consensus reads, “Creed brings the Rocky franchise off the mat for a surprisingly effective seventh round that extends the boxer’s saga in interesting new directions while staying true to its classic predecessors’ roots.” According to FlixPatrol, Creed is currently among the most-watched movies on the domestic iTunes chart, proving that it’s one for the ages. The movie grossed around $175 million worldwide against a reported budget of $40 million, and was followed by Creed II, directed by Steven Caple Jr., and Creed III, directed by Jordan himself. Both follow-ups earned positive reviews and outgrossed their predecessors. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
