Atletico beat Inter while Pafos continue impressive start in debut season
It was an enjoyable evening for Diego Simeone in the Champions League as his Atletico Madrid side found a late winner against Inter, the club where the Argentine manager spent two years as a player.
Jose Gimenez scored in the 93rd minute at the Metropolitano to secure all three points for Simeone’s men after Piotr Zielinski had cancelled out Julian Alvarez’s opener.
The win for Atletico lifts them up the 12th in the 36-team table as they ended Inter’s perfect start to the competition.
Meanwhile, tournament debutants Pafos continued their impressive start to the campaign as they fought back to earn a 2-2 draw against Monaco.
Former Liverpool player Takumi Minamino gave the French club the lead after just five minutes in Cyprus before 38-year-old ex-Chelsea and PSG defender David Luiz drew the hosts level with a powerful header.
Folarin Balogun restored Monaco’s advantage mid-way through the first-half after an error from Pafos goalkeeper Neofytos Michail and that’s how it stayed until the 88th-minute.
With Pafos pushing for an equaliser, they were eventually rewarded when an unfortunate own goal from Mohammed Salisu ensured the Cypriot champions remain in the league’s top 24 having suffered just one defeat so far.
However, for Monaco, who have lost their last three Ligue 1 matches, the result will have done little to help the confidence levels.
Kairat, another side making their Champions League debut this season, went close to emulating Pafos’ heroics but ultimately fell to a 3-2 defeat in Copenhagen.
The host looked comfortable and led 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining courtesy of goals from Viktor Dadason, Jordan Larsson via the penalty spot, and Robert Silva.
But a mistake by Copenhagen keeper Dominik Kotarski gifted Kairat a way back into the game before Olzhas Baybek netted in stoppage time to make it a nervy last few minutes.
Elsewhere, there were 3-0 victories for Atalanta and Sporting, respectively.
The Serie A side overcame Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to three goals in just six second-half minutes from Ademola Lookman, Ederson and Charles de Ketelaere, while Sporting beat Club Brugge courtesy of Geovany Quenda, Luis Suarez and Francisco Trincao.
