Monday gallop to shape Gin Twist’s 2026 campaign

Published

on

The decision on whether Gin Twist forges ahead to another start or enters a spell phase hinges on her performance in a track gallop.

Lindsay Park’s two-year-old filly is a potential runner in Saturday’s Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, contingent on a satisfying showing in Monday’s gallop.

She was the hot favourite dispatched in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington March 28, leading early before stopping to take third.

Ben, Will and J D Hayes prepare Gin Twist, who was accounted for by more than three lengths by the Sydney mare Satono Glow.

Ben Hayes mentioned optimism surrounds the filly’s readiness for Saturday, as she exhibits no adverse aftereffects from the race.

“We’ll make a decision on Monday whether she runs or not after she does some work,” Hayes said.

“We feel that one, she raced a bit fresh last week and two, she didn’t handle the heavy track, but she has pulled up fine.

“It is a good opportunity for her and if she doesn’t work well, we won’t run her, but if she works well, we’ll run her.”

The filly had previously claimed the Listed Festival Stakes (1000m) victory at Flemington on February 28, and was next in line as third emergency for Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on March 21.

Lindsay Park refrained from interstate travel for her, aware a start was improbable.

Hayes is of the view that Gin Twist copes with 1200m and merits another attempt on a good track.

“I think she is a very fast horse, and 1200 metres is her limit,” Hayes said.

“But it is hard to judge her off that run over 1200 metres, which was down the straight, and on a heavy eight (track).

“We can find out if she can the trip and then we’ll know how to place her next prep.”

Deontay Wilder offered immediate title shot after Chisora win: “We’re ready”

Published

on

Deontay Wilder re-established himself in the heavyweight division by outpointing Derek Chisora on Saturday night. Just days later, a route to becoming two-time world champion has presented itself.

In a hectic affair, two of the three judges ruled that ‘The Bronze Bomber’ had done enough to spoil Chisora’s farewell fight and pull off the upset, securing a first win on the world stage since losing his WBC heavyweight title to Tyson Fury in 2020.

Prior to the fight, Chisora was ranked as the IBF’s number 2 heavyweight contender and Wilder is expected to benefit from that rating, opening the door to a clash against the victor of Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jr – who fight in a final eliminator next month.

However, it is with the WBA where Wilder could become a two-time titleholder, as he has been offered a fight by Al Siesta, promoter of WBA Regular heavyweight champion, Murat Gassiev, on X.

“Congratulations to our brother in IBA ‘The Bronze Bomber’ for his victory over the legend Chisora.

“Deontay you are a great champion and it would be our honour for you to compete for Murat Gassiev’s WBA title next. We are ready for anyone.”

Whilst Gassiev – who has also called out Moses Itauma – currently holds the WBA ‘Regular’ title and Oleksandr Usyk remains the recognised ‘Super’ champion, the situation within the sanctioning body could soon shift.

Unified champion Usyk is set to face former kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven next month, with the WBC already confirming its belt will be on the line for that bout. However, as of writing, the WBA and IBF have yet to clarify their positions. Should either body refuse to sanction the fight, Usyk could be forced to vacate or be stripped of one or both titles.

That uncertainty is what makes the WBA route particularly relevant for Wilder. If Usyk relinquishes the belt – whether immediately or as part of his planned run of final fights – the ‘Regular’ title picture involving Gassiev could quickly be elevated, creating a clearer path to full championship status.

Liv Morgan could miss WrestleMania 42 after an injury on WWE RAW

On the latest edition of Monday Night RAW, Liv Morgan was shown talking to Roxanne Perez in a backstage segment before Stephanie Vaquer came out of nowhere to push Morgan into Perez. La Primera then threw The Miracle Kid onto a television. This spot has since been doing the rounds on social media, as Morgan and Perez’s heads collided, and both stars were put in a concussion protocol. The former WWE Women’s World Champion even got a nasty bump on her forehead.

Bryan Alvarez revealed on Wrestling Observer Live that Liv Morgan vs. Stephanie Vaquer could have been canceled if WrestleMania 42 was this weekend, but the match could take place as scheduled because there is still time in ‘Mania. However, this wasn’t a 100% guarantee at the moment, as it is a head injury.

“They were both put in concussion protocol. It’s wait and see. I was pretty much told, if WrestleMania was this weekend, that match probably ain’t happening. Two weeks from now, I guess we’ll see if it happens,” Alvarez said.

It remains to be seen if Liv Morgan and Stephanie Vaquer will lock horns for the WWE Women’s World Championship at WrestleMania 42 as scheduled.
