British remake of sitcom Cheers in development
A British version of the hit American sitcom Cheers is in development, over 30 years after the original concluded.
The classic 11-season series, about a neighborhood bar in Boston run by a retired Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, starred Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, John Ratzenberger, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt and, in later seasons, Kirstie Alley. It aired on NBC from 1982 to 1993.
The remake is currently being pitched by Big Talk Studios, the producer behind BBC One and Amazon Prime Video’s drama series The Outlaws, according to Deadline.
Should the series be greenlit, British screenwriter Simon Nye, known for his work on Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, has been tapped as the showrunner.
Whereas the original show was set in a Boston bar, the reboot will take place in a British pub.
Speaking to Deadline about the reason for the remake, Big Talk’s Chief Executive Kenton Allen said: “The British pub is an endangered species, so there’s an answer for the ‘Why now?’ about it.
“The attitudes of Cheers in the ‘80s are very different to the attitudes of today, so there’s a massive amount of work to be done around taking inspiration from the original characters but creating something fresh.”
Joking that the task of rebooting the iconic sitcom “might be insane,” Allen said it was a “huge honor” to be entrusted with the comedy.
While he acknowledged comedies are more “prone to failure than any other genre,” he explained that the remake is a part of Big Talk’s efforts to branch out amid a rocky time for British scripted shows.
Cheers followed the lives of Sam Malone (Danson), a former MLB relief pitcher who owns and runs a bar, and the regulars who meet there to drink, relax and socialize.

The series also starred Shelley Long as Diane Chambers, an intelligent and somewhat snobby woman forced to work as a waitress at the bar after being abandoned by her fiancé. Although they constantly bicker, Sam and Diane eventually fall in love.
Its series finale, titled “One For The Road,” amassed 80.4 million viewers, making it the second-highest-watched TV ending in history, behind only M*A*S*H’s 1983 finale, which was viewed by 106 million people.
Cheers joins a long list of American shows that have crossed the pond – and vice versa – including The Golden Girls, Married… with Children, That ’70s Show, The Office and The Inbetweeners.

American Pickers presenter Frank Fritz dies aged 60 two years after suffering stroke
Reality star and former American Pickers presenter Frank Fritz has died at the age of 60.
His death on Monday (September 30) comes two years after he suffered a debilitating stroke in October 2022.
“It’s with a broken heart that I share with all of you that Frank passed away last night,” Fritz’s former co-star Mike Wolfe announced on Instagram on Tuesday (October 1).
Alongside a picture of the two of them, Wolfe wrote: “I’ve known Frank for more than half my life and what you’ve seen on TV has always been what I have seen, a dreamer who was just as sensitive as he was funny. The same off camera as he was on, Frank had a way of reaching the hearts of so many by just being himself.
“Who would have ever dreamed we would share the cockpit of a white cargo van in front of millions of people interested in our adventures,” he continued. “Before the show we would take off together to places we never knew existed with no destination in mind and just the shared passion to discover something interesting and historic.
“We’ve been on countless trips and shared so many miles and I feel blessed that I was there by his side when he took one last journey home. I love you buddy and will miss you so much I know you’re in a better place.”
Born in Davenport, Iowa, Fritz rose to fame as a longtime co-host on American Pickers, a reality show that followed him and Wolfe as they traveled across America in search of rare artifacts to sell in their Antique Archaeology stores in Le Claire, Iowa, and Nashville, Tennessee.
Fritz stepped back from the History Channel show in March 2020 after he underwent back surgery. However, despite being open about his desire to return to the show, it was revealed in July 2021 that he had been replaced by Wolfe’s brother Mike.
In October 2022, it was reported that Fritz had been placed under temporary guardianship after he suffered a stroke that left him “unable to communicate, or carry out important decisions concerning his own financial affairs.”
Following news of his death, The History Channel and American Pickers production company Cineflix Production released a joint statement, which read: “Frank filmed American Pickers for over a decade. We will always remember ‘the bearded charmer’ and his never-ending search for vintage motorcycles and bikes.
“Our thoughts are with Frank’s loved ones during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed.”
Besides co-hosting American Pickers for 10 years, Fritz also featured on other History Channel series, including Pawn Stars and American Restoration. He also lent his voice to an episode of the adult cartoon Family Guy.

Phillip Schofield threatens to expose former co-workers after admitting he was ‘thrown under a bus’ for affair scandal
PHILLIP Schofield has threatened to expose his former co-workers after saying he was ‘thrown under the bus’.
The TV star has returned to television after 16 months off air after admitting to an ‘unwise but not illegal’ affair with a young runner.
As the second episode of Cast Away aired on Channel 5, Phil opened up on being ‘thrown under the bus’ by the people he worked with during the scandal.
Speaking to the camera, he said: “People just went, who I thought were my friends and they just went and that’s like ‘what the hell’.”
He continued: “I have been chucked under a bus, and I could drive the same bus over so many people but I’m not that sort of person, I never have been.”
“But if I sit down with a camera and the light’s going who knows what I’ll say.”
more on phillip schofield
Later in the second episode of the three-part series, Phil said: “I miss parts of being on TV, certainly.
“I miss most of it, if I’m honest, I miss most of it.
“But there are bits that I really, really, really don’t miss.
“You learn a lot about people, I don’t miss that.”
Phil blames his brother for being “fired” from his lucrative This Morning and Dancing on Ice gigs.
In April 2023, Timothy Schofield was convicted of 11 sexual offences involving a child – including emotionally blackmailing a child into sex acts.
However, according to The Mirror, ITV insiders are highly refuting the claims, saying: “Phillip’s new comments are simply untrue, he is lying again.”
Cast Away verdict
By Rod McPhee
OVER three nights – and three hour-long episodes – Phillip Schofield has been bearing his soul in new Channel 5 show Cast Away.
And it’s basically a chance for the former This Morning host to explain the circumstances that saw him leave the show last year.
To put it mildly, he left under something of a cloud, admitting he’d had a fling with a much younger runner on the programme. But in the C5 show he presents his own versions of events – one which is at odds with the narrative that emerged at the time.
He was portrayed as a man who’d had an “unwise” affair, who’d resigned as a result and had let many of his colleagues down.
But in Cast Away Philip insists he was fired by ITV and not for the affair, but because of the bad publicity that surrounded the crimes of his paedophile brother. He summed it up best when he claimed he’d been “pushed under a bus.”
After watching Cast Away what you’re left with is something rather confusing, however.
Did Philip think he’d done something wrong by having the fling with the runner, or not? For example, he said he wouldn’t have been slammed for it quite so much if it were a heterosexual fling.
He said he: “would have received a pat on the back for having an affair with a woman.” This infers that the only thing wrong with it was that it was a same sex fling. So why does he also say: “I will be forever sorry. I screwed up. I made a mistake.”
The answer, I suspect, is that the whole affair was a murky business. There were so many blurred lines around appropriateness, professionalism and honesty.
The only firm conclusion you can draw from the show is that Phillip himself isn’t ENTIRELY sure to what extent He was guilty of wrongdoing.
Amid the confusion, what will the viewing public think? I suspect that this will leave those who disliked Phillip to feel even more suspicious of him.
Those who backed him, will feel reassured too. But those who still aren’t sure what to think will be none-the-wiser – and I’m not sure if that’s what Phillip would have wanted.

This Morning favourite emotionally reveals breast cancer has returned
Deidre Sanders, This Morning’s beloved agony aunt, has revealed her breast cancer has returned.
The 79-year-old presenter, who hosts the Dear Deidre segment on the breakfast programme, was first diagnosed with the disease in 2022 and underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells from her right breast.
At the time, she told This Morning viewers that she had not gone for a mammogram for nearly 10 years and encouraged them to get their breasts checked regularly.
On Tuesday (1 October), Sanders told viewers that the cancer has returned and she will be receiving surgery to remove a tumour followed by treatment.
She said: “Unfortunately, I’ve got to have a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy. I feel lucky, it’s been caught early and the treatment is happening very rapidly.
“This is all on the NHS so I think I am so lucky. It could be so much worse. To be honest, the symptoms I had the first time were a coincidence and not actually a symptom of the cancer as it turns out,” she said.
“An efficient GP put me on the cancer pathway and I got a very rapid check and treatment. I’ve felt well, I haven’t felt tired or run down. I couldn’t feel anything, it’s very tiny so there’s nothing to feel. It’s purely down to the mammogram which showed it up. I had an ultrasound and a biopsy and it revealed it was cancer.”
The agony aunt admitted she was “shocked” by the diagnosis but she wasn’t currently feeling unwell.
She reminded women that the call for mammograms stops when they turn 70 – but they can request them via the NHS if they are concerned.
“I was shocked. I felt fine. I was so taken aback, I wasn’t expecting it at all”, she said, before urging other women: ‘My big point about this is that on the NHS system, I’m not criticising it, the call for mammograms stop when you are 70,’” said Sanders.
The presenter, who joined the programme in 2016, also revealed she was among thousands of women who did not receive an invite for a mammogram when they turned 70 due to “error”.
“I happened to be in a cohort of women who got missed and we didn’t get called. I hadn’t had a mammogram since I was 67, so ten years had gone by. I didn’t give it a thought. I didn’t know anything about it.”
“But what I do now know is that when you’re over 70, you can request a mammogram on the NHS and you should get one every year. Please, if you’re a woman over 70, request your mammogram. The reason I’ve had an easy time this time and last time is because it was caught so early.”
