Jacob Stockdale’s return to form for Ulster has him in contention for a starting role for next Thursday’s Six Nations opener against holders France in Paris
Rory Best feels Jacob Stockdale is “built” for the kind of physical test that awaits Ireland in next Thursday’s Six Nations opener against France and hopes he gets the nod to feature at the Stade de France.
Stockdale has forced his way into Andy Farrell’s squad on the back of some impressive displays with Ulster and an ongoing injury crisis could see him start against the defending champions.
A suspected broken thumb looks set to rule Hugo Keenan out of the opening game at the very least.
Mack Hansen, Robbie Henshaw, Andrew Porter, Paddy McCarthy and Ryan Baird are also out with Bundee Aki suspended while Tadhg Furlong remains a doubt.
He might have a slightly biased take, but Ulster’s General Manager insists Stockdale is one of the form backs in Ireland.
“For me he’s the form back three – him and Tommy O’Brien are the form back threes in Ireland and then that’s up to Andy (Farrell) to balance,” said Best.
“Does he go with the guys that he really trusts in a hostile environment or does he go with the guys that are playing the best at the minute?
“Andy will see how they’re training and he’ll make a decision.
“I would love to see Jacob starting, for me that’s the kind of test that’s built for him where he can really muscle up with them. He’s as good an athlete as they have and what better way to show that the form that you’ve built with Ulster can translate into the national arena?”
Stockdale’s record-equalling seven tries helped Ireland win the Grand Slam in 2018. He was also Player of the Tournament in his rookie year before a luckless run of injuries coupled with a loss of form threatened to undermine his undoubted talent.
A lesser man might have crumbled under the burden and Best has hailed the mental fortitude of his former International colleague.
“You look at when he burst onto the scene in 2018, I was lucky enough to be in that team and everything he did just went right for him,” stated Best.
“The thing with injuries mentally is he kept trying to come back, and he would come in and Monday morning he would run and it wouldn’t be right and then there was nothing else we could do except try to rehab it and we would try again next week.
“From a mental point of view, what you want is that this injury is going to be a month, six months, nine months or whatever it is.
“When you don’t know and you’re coming in every week going ‘hopefully this doesn’t break down’ and then it does – it is just soul destroying for him.
“So for him to fight through that and then to come back, obviously because I’ve known him a long time I’m particularly pleased for him these last couple of seasons, he’s been very good and I really hope he gets a run at it.
“He has matured around the place, he’s now a husband, he’s now a father and that can change your outlook.
“You’re not necessarily just so focused on the match that it’s all or nothing, that maturity allows you to look at things differently which can help you play better.”
