Christian Pulisic makes big statement about US team ahead of World Cup

Published

on

Christian Pulisic has declared the current United States national team to be the strongest he has ever been a part of, with the AC Milan forward expressing significant optimism for the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Pulisic, a long-standing figurehead for US soccer, believes the team is in an excellent position as anticipation builds for the tournament, which is set to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“I think you could say so,” Pulisic told Reuters when asked if this iteration of the US team was its strongest since he established himself in the squad.

“Looking at the guys playing at the highest levels and doing extremely well at their clubs, and I think for sure you have a really, really strong squad and depth as well. Multiple guys that can play in every position. It’s a very strong team.”

The squad, led by Pulisic and coach Mauricio Pochettino, is expected to feature attacking talents such as Folarin Balogun and Tim Weah, alongside midfielders Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams. Defensively, Tim Ream and Chris Richards are anticipated to play key roles, with Matt Freese and Matt Turner in goal.

For Pulisic, the prospect of competing in a World Cup on home turf adds an extra layer of motivation to soccer’s premier event.

“A World Cup is enough motivation in itself and having it in the US, having my family and close friends there, there’s just nothing more you can ask for,” he stated.

The 27-year-old hopes American fans will provide a crucial boost to the team when the tournament commences. The US are scheduled to face Paraguay on 12 June at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

“I know the energy in the stadiums is going to be great,” he said. “We want to take as much of that as we can, take that motivation and push to make the American people proud.”

Pulisic, who has represented the US since his teenage years, emphasized the profound significance of wearing the national team shirt.

“Representing the US and being able to wear that crest, I don’t take it lightly,” he affirmed. “It’s something I’ve been doing since I was 17 years old… I’m very proud to be an American and am grateful for everything this country has given me. I just want to give everything back and hopefully make some people proud.”

Often labelled “Captain America” and seen as the public face of the men’s game in the country, Pulisic revealed he prefers to ignore such external pressures.

“I’d say I definitely tune it out,” he explained. “It’s not something I look into too much. I worry about what I can do and how I can help my team and how I can help us win.”

He added that his leadership style has evolved towards setting standards through his work ethic rather than through speeches.

“I hope what I do from a day-to-day perspective, in training every single day, the way that I work, I hope I can show people my dedication to the team and lead by example,” he said.

Pulisic also clarified that he does not feel burdened by a broader responsibility to be the sport’s standard-bearer in the United States, though he hopes to inspire younger players.

“I’m focused on doing my job,” he said. “If I can inspire some people along the way, that’s amazing. That pushes me and I hope to do that. But I don’t feel pressure to do it.”

Despite growing expectations for the co-hosts, Pulisic was hesitant to define success by a specific finishing position, stating only that the initial objective is to progress from the group stage before approaching the tournament one match at a time.

His message to supporters, however, was unequivocal: “The team’s in a good place. People should be excited and hopefully ready to cheer us on.”

Raiders Super Bowl hero Rod Martin, major contributor to two titles, dead at 72

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rod Martin, a key contributor to Super Bowl-winning teams, died at 72, the Las Vegas Raiders announced.

Martin is perhaps best known for his record-setting performance in Super Bowl XV, when he picked off three passes from Ron Jaworski en route to a 27-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Martin set the tone by picking off the Eagles quarterback on his first pass of the game, and Jim Plunkett turned it into six points just a few plays later on the ensuing drive.

As the Eagles trailed 21-3, they attempted to mount a comeback and were marching, but Martin picked off Jaworski again. Martin’s third pick all but sealed the victory late in the fourth quarter for the Raiders during their first stint in Oakland.

Three years later, when the then-Los Angeles Raiders won Super Bowl XVIII over the Washington Redskins, he had a sack and a fumble recovery.

“The Raiders Family is deeply saddened by the passing of Rod Martin, a standout linebacker and key player on two Super Bowl championship teams…” the team said in a release.

STEPHEN A. SMITH SAYS HE BELIEVES DIANNA RUSSINI AND MIKE VRABEL ARE INNOCENT — FOR NOW

“A beloved member of the Raiders Family and a favorite of Raiders fans everywhere, the deepest condolences of the entire Raider Nation are with Rod’s family at this time.”

Amazingly enough, Martin’s career-high in interceptions in a regular season is four from his 1983 campaign, the same year as his second Super Bowl victory. Two of those went for pick-sixes, which led the league.

The following season, he was named a first-team All-Pro for the only time in his career.

Super Bowl XV was the only time he recorded at least one interception in a playoff game, and it was the only time in his career he had more than one in any game, regular season or postseason.

Martin was a 12th-round pick out of USC but became a mainstay on the Raiders’ defense, starting 147 of his 165 career games across his 12-year career, all of which were with the Raiders.

Report: Ravens’ Nnamdi Madubuike could return in ’26

The Baltimore Ravens are optimistic that standout defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike could return this season from what was considered a career-threatening neck injury he suffered in Week 2 of the 2025 season, ESPN reported Tuesday.

Per the report, Madubuike underwent neck surgery last week, with doctors telling the team that they thought he could return in 2026.

Without him manning the defensive line last season, the Ravens defense was 24th in the NFL and had trouble pressuring opposing quarterbacks. The Ravens had just 30 sacks for 189 yards in 2025, a huge drop from 2023 (60 sacks, 454 yards) and 2024 (54, 318).

Both the Ravens and Madubuike have been mum about his future since the injury, but it was known that the two-time Pro Bowl selection was taking part in Baltimore’s offseason workouts.

A third-round draft pick by Baltimore out of Texas A&M, Madubuike has 30 career sacks and 69 QB hits in 78 games (66 starts).

He also has 203 career tackles and two forced fumbles.

“Not having Nnamdi this year was a horrible situation for our team,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said after the Ravens finished their season 8-9 and did not make the playoffs.

“I think it affected us in different ways — in many ways. He is a great player, a great person, a special person.”

PGA Tour will shutter 2 Hawaii tournaments in schedule shuffle

Published

on

When it comes to the future of the PGA Tour, and specifically the 2027 PGA Tour season, a lot is up in the air. But on Monday we gained some official insight into the new schedule, and it’s not good news for Hawaii golf fans.

The PGA Tour’s Hawaii swing is no more. Both the traditional season-opening event at Kapalua and the Sony Open in Hawaii will not be contested next year, at least not as PGA Tour events.

The Tour confirmed the news following early reports from the Associated Press and Sports Business Journal.

Here’s what you need to know.

PGA Tour confirms Hawaii will not be on 2027 schedule

The Sentry, formerly known as the Sentry Tournament of Champions, ran from 1999-2025 at Kapalua’s Plantation Course. For many years, it acted as the official PGA Tour season opener.

But beginning next year, the tournament will not serve that purpose.

The PGA Tour confirmed the development in a statement released Monday night.

“We are grateful to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Kapalua Resort, Maui County and the state of Hawaii for their longtime support of our season-opening PGA Tour event,” the statement read, “as well as the fans, partners and volunteers across Maui who have supported the event throughout the years.”

The news of the tournament’s end comes after the 2026 event was controversially cancelled due to course conditions related to water issues in Maui.

Sentry’s tournament sponsorship with the PGA Tour runs through 2035. Sports Business Journal reports that the company could potentially take over the sponsorship for the late-January event at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

As for the Sony Open, the Tour revealed that they are in discussions to turn it into a PGA Tour Champions event.

The news comes as the Tour plans to overhaul the 2027 schedule. CEO Brian Rolapp has stated the hope is to decrease the total number of tournaments, while bringing some events to big markets.

Louisiana Tech closes in on move to Sun Belt Conference

Louisiana Tech is a step closer to a move to the Sun Belt Conference on July 1 after coming to a settlement in principle with jilted Conference USA.

A settlement in principle means the two sides have reached an agreement on how to settle a dispute but have yet to finalize and execute the document.

Louisiana Tech has belonged to Conference USA since 2013 and announced last year that it planned to join the Sun Belt no later than the beginning of the 2027-28 academic year.

The school and CUSA had been unable to reach an agreement on how much Louisiana Tech should pay to leave the conference. The Athletic reported Tuesday that CUSA officials wanted $5.5 million, with Louisiana Tech offering “much less.”

The issue wound up in litigation.

Once everyone signs off on the agreement, CUSA will need to redo conference schedules. Both CUSA and the Sun Belt, for example, issued schedules for football that included Louisiana Tech.

Under the Sun Belt Conference’s schedule, the Bulldogs could get off to a rough start to the 2026 football season. Two of their first three games are on the road against power-4 teams LSU and Baylor

MS Dhoni Starts Wicketkeeping In CSK Training, Getting Ready For ‘El Clasico’ vs MI In IPL 2026?

Published

on

Chennai Super Kings have so far played six matches in the IPL 2026, losing four of them. Former skipper MS Dhoni has been conspicuous by his absence in these matches. A calf strain ruled him out of the first two weeks of action. Though he recently travelled with the team to Hyderabad, Dhoni was nowhere to be seen in the stadium. However, on Tuesday, CSK uploaded a video showing Dhoni wicketkeeping. CSK’s next match is against Mumbai Indians on Thursday, and the video has given rise to speculation over whether Dhoni is ready for that match.

On Sunday, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey expressed optimism about MS Dhoni’s comeback during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The former Indian cricketer is yet to feature in IPL 2026 as he has been recovering from a calf strain. While the right-hand batter has been taking part in net sessions, it is unclear when he will return to CSK’s playing XI.

After CSK suffered a 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, Hussey, speaking at the post-match press conference, said Dhoni is progressing well with his rehabilitation and expressed satisfaction with his batting.

“He’s progressing nicely with his rehab. And look, I’m a batting coach, and I’m happy with how he’s batting,” Hussey said.

Hussey added that Dhoni is batting well and that he is satisfied with his form. He explained that Dhoni’s main focus during recovery has been improving his running fitness and speed, particularly for quick runs between the wickets during the latter stages of an innings. Hussey said he is unsure about the exact return date but hopes Dhoni will be back soon.

“As you saw yesterday at training, he’s batting well. He was very happy with where his batting is at. He’s just about progressing with his running, because if he’s going to bat towards the back end of the innings, he’s going to have to scurry back for those twos and things like that. He just needs to get confidence in his running and build that speed up. I don’t know when he’ll play, but I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later, like all the fans are,” the CSK batting coach said.

Banned for playing in Goa! ECB blocks Peter Siddle, Samit Patel from T20 Blast
Peter Siddle and Samit Patel (GettyImages)

Peter Siddle and Samit Patel have been ruled out of this summer’s T20 Blast after falling foul of ECB regulations linked to their participation in an unsanctioned tournament earlier this year, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. Both players featured in the World Legends Pro T20 League held in Goa during January and February, a competition deemed “disapproved cricket” as it did not have the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Under ECB rules, any cricketer who has taken part in such events within 12 months of the domestic season is barred from county competitions. Siddle, 41, had been lined up as an overseas signing for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club in the Blast, but the deal has now been scrapped. The club confirmed the development on Tuesday, citing his “personal circumstances”. Director of cricket Mick Newell admitted the decision was a setback, saying Nottinghamshire were “naturally disappointed” and would now seek a replacement. The county had already bolstered their squad with additions like Benny Howell and George Munsey. However, they could also be without another overseas recruit, George Linde, at the start of the tournament. Linde is currently tied up with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and may miss the opening matches if the franchise progresses to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Patel’s situation is more definitive. The 41-year-old all-rounder, who has been without a county contract since leaving Derbyshire County Cricket Club after last season, confirmed that he has accepted the ECB’s directive and abandoned hopes of playing in this year’s Blast. Patel’s absence marks the end of a remarkable streak. Alongside Ravi Bopara, he is one of only two players to have appeared in every edition of the T20 Blast since its inception in 2003. Neither will feature this season, with Bopara having already stepped away from county cricket last month to focus on coaching and media commitments.

Ilya Kovalchuk takes over as president of KHL’s Shanghai Dragons

Published

on

The Shanghai Dragons are turning to a pair of former NHLers to reshape the franchise’s future.

The club announced Tuesday that Ilya Kovalchuk has been named team president, while Evgeny Artyukhin will take over as general manager.

“This is a very exciting challenge for me,” Kovalchuk wrote in a press release. “I am grateful for the opportunity to become part of the Shanghai Dragons and to help build a competitive team that fans can be proud of.”

Kovalchuk, who officially retired from professional hockey in 2025, steps into an executive role for the first time after a decorated playing career that included starring roles in both the NHL and KHL.

He spent 13 seasons in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens and Capitals, recording 443 goals and 876 points over 926 career games. With Russia, Kovalchuk won two gold medals at the world championship and an Olympic gold medal in 2018.

“I understand the responsibility that comes with this position,” he added. “We have important work ahead of us, and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Artyukhin, meanwhile, transitions into management after a lengthy pro career of his own and replaces Igor Varitsky as GM.

“It’s an honour to take on this role,” Artyukhin said. “Our goal is to build a team that can compete at a high level and represent Shanghai with pride.”

The Dragons struggled this past season, finishing outside the playoff picture and prompting a reset.

Former Capitals assistant Mitch Love, who was fired last fall after a team investigation, led the Dragons as head coach after replacing Jack Adams Award winner Gerard Gallant, who stepped down in January over health issues.

“With new leadership, we are confident the club will take the next step forward,” the team said in a statement.
