Raiders select Fernando Mendoza with No 1 pick in NFL draft

Published

on

The Las Vegas Raiders have pinned their hopes on Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, selecting him first overall in Thursday night’s NFL draft.

Mendoza’s revitalization of the franchise, which hasn’t won a playoff game since their 2002 Super Bowl appearance despite three Lombardi Trophies, is crucial.

However, the Raiders have clarified they will not rush Mendoza’s development, having signed veteran Kirk Cousins, who is expected to start the season.

This top selection places considerable pressure on both Mendoza and the organization to validate the choice, especially as he was not widely considered a top prospect a year ago, despite the pick being telegraphed for months.

Mendoza, who stunningly led Indiana to its first national championship, did not attend the draft in Pittsburgh, opting to watch with family and friends in Miami.

The Raiders’ last No. 1 overall pick is remembered as one of the major busts in NFL draft history. LSU’s JaMarcus Russell went first overall in 2007, lasting just three seasons while going 7-18.

Was Mendoza, a capable quarterback during his two years as the starter at Cal, a one-year wonder at Indiana and beneficiary of a QB-friendly system? Or did coach Curt Cignetti unlock something in Mendoza that will translate to the NFL? The truth also could be somewhere in the middle.

That will be revealed eventually, but the Raiders have something new — hope. Klint Kubiak is the fifth full-time head coach since the club moved to Las Vegas in 2020, and it’s been a similar revolving door with quarterbacks.

But the Raiders also hadn’t built up the rest of the roster to give whichever quarterback was taking snaps a fair chance to succeed.

That appears to be changing.

Second-year general manager John Spytek took advantage of having enough salary-cap space by committing nearly $300 million to eight players, including three-time Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum and wide receiver Jalen Nailor.

The Raiders also bring back tight end Brock Bowers, running back Ashton Jeanty and left tackle Kolton Miller to give Cousins and Mendoza help.

But Mendoza has to do his part, too. The Raiders entered the opening night of the draft on the clock. Now it’s the quarterback who quickly faces a ticking clock.

Manchester United could do something different in the transfer market this summer

Published

on

Man United are reportedly monitoring Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven as Spurs continue to flirt with relegation from the Premier League.

There was a time when Manchester United could knock on the door of almost any other team in England and cherry-pick the players they wanted to bring to Old Trafford.

Take Tottenham Hotspur, for example. Teddy Sheringham, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov were lured to United having shone at White Hart Lane, with the trio all heavily involved in Premier League and Champions League triumphs in the red of United. Plenty has changed since then and not just United’s status as English football’s top dogs.

The latter of the aforementioned transfers did not run smoothly, with the Bulgarian striker only signing on the dotted line late on deadline day in 2008. Manchester City’s takeover by the Abu Dhabi Group earlier in the day saw them make a move for Berbatov, with then-Spurs chairman Daniel Levy subsequently upping the fee.

United have avoided transfer dealings with Spurs at all costs since that day, with Sergio Reguilon’s 2023 loan move to Old Trafford the only time they have done business since. United needed a left-back and Spurs wanted to ship Reguilon out – it was a deal that suited all parties.

United’s reluctance to deal with Spurs saw them avoid a move for Harry Kane in 2023 prior to his move to Bayern Munich, despite the England captain being Erik ten Hag’s preferred pick as they searched for a centre forward. Rasmus Hojlund signed instead. The Dane scored 14 league goals in the two years he spent at United before a loan move to Napoli, 48 fewer than Kane managed in that same period.

But with Levy now gone and Spurs circling the Premier League plughole, could United make a return to a club they have been so keen to avoid for so many years?

It’s claimed Micky van de Ven is being monitored by United ahead of the summer transfer window. Into his third year in the Premier League, the Dutchman has proved himself to be a top operator and Spurs’ possible relegation could see Van de Ven leave in a cut-price deal.

Strangely, earlier this season it would have been fair to claim centre-back was United’s strongest area of the pitch. However, Matthijs de Ligt looks as though he might have played his last game of the season and various other suspension and injury setbacks have left United down to the bare bones at centre half.

With the Reds potentially set to add around another 20 games to their calendar next season, signing another centre-back is by no means a bad idea and Van de Ven would be a great option if available at the right price.

At 25 he still has his best years ahead of him, meaning he fits the profile of player Ineos look for when bolstering the squad. United would likely face competition for his signature should they firm up their interest in him, with Liverpool also said to be monitoring his situation. With Champions League football almost certainly set to be on the table at Old Trafford, there’s no reason why United can’t win the race.

On the whole, United have looked to avoid transfer dealings with Spurs. With Levy gone and Spurs potentially set for the Premier League trap door, now could be the perfect time to swoop in.

Bo Bichette’s three-run double propels Mets to win over Twins

Published

on

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets survived a ninth-inning bullpen mix-up when Huascar Brazobán went to the mound as closer Devin Williams started walking in, then hung on to beat the Minnesota Twins 10-8 Thursday night behind Bo Bichette‘s tiebreaking, three-run double for their second straight win after a 12-game skid.

After placing star Francisco Lindor on the injured list with a calf injury, New York led 6-1 in the fourth, 7-2 in the sixth and 7-3 in the eighth before Ryan Jeffers hit the first grand slam Brazobán allowed in his big league career.

Brett Baty and Marcus Semien singled against Andrew Morris (1-1) in the bottom half, pinch-hitter Tommy Pham walked against Anthony Banda and Bichette doubled off the left-centerfield wall for a 10-7 lead.

With the lights dimmed at Citi Field, Williams headed to the mound from the bullpen as called for by manager Carlos Mendoza, but Brazobán simultaneously walked from the dugout back to the mound. Once Brazobán crossed the foul line, he was required to start the inning, which meant Williams wouldn’t be eligible for a save.

Brazobán retired Austin Martin on a groundout and Williams then relieved and struck out Luke Keaschall.

Brooks Lee singled and scored on Tristan Gray’s single, and Bryon Buxton’s double put the potential tying run in scoring position. Williams (1-1) then struck out Trevor Larnarch, who swung over a 2-2 changeup.

Juan Soto, in his second game back from a strained right calf that caused him to miss 15 games, went 0 for 3 with two walks.

Baty’s three-run homer in the first off Joe Ryan gave the Mets a 3-1 lead and Carsen Benge hit a solo shot for the 7-2 margin in the fourth. Gray hit a solo homer in the sixth off David Peterson.

Ryan gave up seven runs — four earned — in five innings, while the Mets’ Christian Scott lasted just 1 1/3 innings and walked five in his first appearance with the club since July 21, 2024.

Twins: RHP Taj Bradley (3-0, 1.63 ERA) opposes his former club Friday at the Tampa Bay Rays, who start RHP Drew Rasmussen (1-0, 2.75 ERA).

Mets: RHP Freddy Peralta (1-2, 4.05 ERA) starts Friday’s series opener against Colorado and RHP Michael Lorenzen (1-2, 7.48 ERA).

Will MS Dhoni play the next game for CSK? Michael Hussey shares new updates
MS Dhoni (BCCI/IPL Photo)

NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans are still waiting to see MS Dhoni play in IPL 2026, even though he has been regularly training with the team. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who was ruled out initially due to a calf injury, has now missed close to a month of action. While he has been seen practising both batting and keeping, he hasn’t featured in matches yet, leaving fans disappointed. There were also rumours that when Dhoni returns, he might only play as an impact substitute and avoid wicketkeeping duties. However, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey, speaking on the sidelines of the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, cleared the air, confirming that Dhoni is expected to return as a wicketkeeper, not just a specialist batter.

Addressing his fitness, Hussey said, “I’m pretty sure he’ll be behind the stumps. The biggest thing for him is that calf injury. It’s just the running and late in the innings if he comes in, having to scamper those ones and twos. He just needs to make sure the calf is strong enough to withstand that.”

Focus on full fitness

Hussey made it clear that Dhoni’s role won’t be limited, but his return depends entirely on recovery. He added, “But certainly from a skill perspective, we know what he can do as a keeper. We know he’s batting really well, so it’s just hopefully getting that confidence in the calf.” The focus, according to the team, is to ensure Dhoni is fully fit before stepping back onto the field.

Return likely soon

Providing a positive update, Hussey said Dhoni is making good progress and is eager to return. “He’s progressing really well. I know he’s pushing hard to get back as quickly as he possibly can. I know all the fans want to see him, MS Dhoni, out there playing as well. So we’re hopeful, maybe in the next few games, but we want him back as quickly as he possibly can as well,” he added.“But obviously, he needs to be close to 100 per cent ready to give his best because he’s been batting well in the nets, he looks good in the nets. Just need him running hard between the wickets too.”For now, CSK are managing well and sit mid-table, but fans continue to wait for Dhoni’s comeback. After winning against Mumbai Indians, CSK next take on Gujarat Titans on Sunday.

Giants select Miami tackle Francis Mauigoa at No. 10 in the 2026 NFL Draft

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The New York Giants were armed with two picks in the top 10 of the 2026 NFL Draft, and the new regime led by head coach John Harbaugh showed its focus on the trenches on both sides of the ball.

With the fifth overall pick, the Giants saw Ohio State star edge rusher Arvell Reese fall to them and they pulled the trigger, taking their third edge rusher in the first round since 2022.

Then, with the No. 10 overall pick, the Giants had the opportunity to take another Buckeyes defensive star, as safety Caleb Downs fell down the draft board. But it’s clear the Giants are protecting their future, quarterback Jaxson Dart, as they went offensive line with their next pick.

Miami tackle Francis Mauigoa was called out of the NFL Draft green room in Pittsburgh as the No. 10 overall pick. While he played tackle with the Hurricanes, Mauigoa is expected to move to the offensive interior line.

The Giants re-signed Jermaine Eluemunor, who shined as the team’s right tackle in 2025, during free agency. He’s expected to remain in that role, but the Giants have question marks at guard, and there’s a belief Mauigoa can move inside.

TOP FIVE HILARIOUS NFL DRAFT NIGHT MOMENTS TO GET THE NOSTALGIA FLOWING

In some mock drafts entering Thursday, Reese was projected to go second overall to the New York Jets. But the Jets went with David Bailey out of Texas Tech instead.

From there, the Arizona Cardinals went with Jeremiyah Love, making him the highest-picked running back since the Giants took Saquon Barkley in 2018. The Tennessee Titans went with wide receiver Carnell Tate, the first Buckeyes player off the board, and Reese fell into their laps.

Giants receiver Malik Nabers, making an appearance on a draft show alongside Green Bay Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons, questioned where Reese would play considering Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter, the team’s No. 3 overall pick a year ago, play edge rusher.

But Harbaugh hinted at the plan to make Reese an inside linebacker – an area of need on the Giants’ defense. If that is the plan, Reese’s athleticism, which has been on display throughout his Ohio State career, will be tested at the NFL level.

As for Mauigoa, the 6-foot-5, 329-pound tackle was viewed as one of the top offensive line prospects in this draft throughout the process.

Mauigoa was a first-team All-American selection this past year for a Miami squad that reached the national championship game. He started all 16 games at right tackle for the Hurricanes.

There was, however, an injury question surrounding Mauigoa, as he has dealt with a back issue that may require surgery at some point in his pro career. Teams have their due diligence in these matters, and the Giants don’t seem to be concerned to spend the pick on him.

This was the 10th overall pick the Giants acquired after trading All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals last week, fulfilling his trade request amid a contract dispute.

Mauigoa already put himself in Giants fans’ good graces, saying during his draft interview, “I’ll die for you, Jaxson Dart.” That’s the type of energy Harbaugh, Dart and the rest of the Giants are looking for at an essential position on the football field.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Big Gesture For CSK Teammate Mukesh Choudhary Who Lost His Mother Days Ago

Published

on

Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad dedicated Chennai Super Kings’ comprehensive 103-run victory to Mukesh Choudhary, who featured in the match despite the recent demise of his mother, as players wore black armbands in tribute during their clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. “Pretty tough on him (Mukesh Choudhary), I would dedicate this win to him. All glory to him. Everyone chipped in and wanted to be there for him. Feels good (on the win),” Gaikwad said after the match.

CSK delivered a dominant all-round performance, posting a formidable 207/6 after opting to bat first. Sanju Samson led from the front with a magnificent unbeaten 101, while contributions across the batting order ensured the total crossed the 200-run mark.

In response, the Mumbai Indians struggled from the outset and were eventually bowled out for 104 in 19 overs. Akeal Hosein starred with the ball, picking up four wickets, while Noor Ahmad provided crucial support.

Speaking about the decision at the toss, Gaikwad revealed it was instinctive. “My gut feeling wanted me to bat first. Sanju and I said that it wasn’t coming on nicely.”

He credited the collective batting effort, highlighting the importance of small contributions. “Everyone chipped in really well. Even the 20s helped. Sanju played a magnificent knock and took us home,” he said.

“Mukesh to Quinton de Kock, that set the momentum. He started really well,” he added.

Praising the bowling unit and team balance, he added, “It’s a blessing to have Akeal and Noor. Everyone is settling. Everyone is calm and composed.”

Reflecting on the team’s approach and growing rhythm in the tournament, Gaikwad said, “We have been doing well; it’s just starting to click. We are trying to cover all the bases. We start from zero, it’s about assessing.”

Meanwhile, after the win, CSK have moved up to the fifth position in the points table with six points in seven matches. They will next face the Gujarat Titans on April 26.

Lees’ promising three-year-olds target 2026 Anzac Day wins at Randwick

Published

on

Kris Lees will highlight a duo of gifted three-year-olds in his Anzac Day lineup at Randwick, following news that Lord Of Biscay takes his place in the Tamworth Cup.

Winner of the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, the gelding Lord Of Biscay leads early betting for Saturday’s First Australian Imperial Force Handicap (1500m), though Lees reveals he will journey to Tamworth a day ahead.

“It looks a nice race for him,” Lees said of the Tamworth Cup, which carries Big Dance eligibility.

Lees, riding high from an excellent autumn featuring Changingoftheguard’s long-shot success in the Sydney Cup, seeks to identify future stars in Night Agent and Cantiamo.

He elects to reduce Night Agent’s distance to 1400m in the Last Post Handicap on Saturday, interested in his level of form.

After two triumphs, the gelding debuts on Sydney Saturdays, having powered home by 10 lengths at a country meet on Beaumont and then claiming a 1500m midweek metro race at Hawkesbury.

“It was a Cessnock meeting, with all due respect,” Lees said of Night Agent’s win two starts ago.

“Still, he did it convincingly and won well. Then he went to a Hawkesbury metro and won well. He was just a little aggressive early and it took its toll late, although he still won.
“But we decided to drop him back to 1400. It’s probably a more appropriate distance at the moment.”

Cantiamo has been a firm favourite of Lees, who has entered her in stakes events repeatedly, including a brave sixth in her last start, the P J Bell Stakes (1200m).

In The Third Australian General Hospital Handicap (1200m) against more experienced mares, Lees tips her to dominate, with sights set on the Denise’s Joy Stakes (1200m) at Scone come May 16.

“That would be the plan if she runs well. It’s in three weeks so she can have a freshen and drop back in trip,” Lees said.

“We tried her in stakes company a few times and she has been competitive without winning. It’s a little drop back in grade and she is going really well.”

Valorous Power joins Night Agent but remains in adjustment phase per Lees, building fitness, as Zaphod and Kind Words pose credible dangers in the Anzac Day Cup (1800m).

Lees pins his greatest faith on the three-year-olds for victories.

“Cantiamo and Night Agent are two really nice horses and they’ll both run well,” he said.

Ciaron Maher’s strong duo targets 2026 Australasian Oaks at Morphettville

Published

on

Jockey in blue and white silks rides a gray racehorse on a grassy track during a race on a sunny day.

Salty Pearl stands out as the most resilient filly currently in training, handled by Ciaron Maher.

Having navigated a tough spring with Group 2 successes, the dependable filly pursues Group 1 riches in the Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Saturday’s effort will be her sixth this season, initiated in January atop a four-run spring lead-up.

She has handled rapid returns well in the past, yet this occasion introduces significant travel to prove her mettle.

Limited to Melbourne fixtures so far, Salty Pearl shipped to Sydney last time, securing third in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 28, now en route to Adelaide four weeks hence for the Australasian Oaks.

Jack Turnbull, National Assistant Trainer at Ciaron Maher Racing, mentioned breaking the Adelaide haul with a Ballarat stop.

“It is hard to travel and maintain form, but she did it for Sydney and the question mark is whether she can back up in Adelaide,” Turnbull said.

“We can break the trip up by stopping over in Ballarat and then it’s only five hours from there, so it’s not a huge ask.

“She’s just a wonderful horse to train.

“She’s incredibly consistent. She doesn’t take any extra work to manage. She’s hardy to train, which is fantastic.

“She had a jump-out last week and ran a really good race in the Vinery, so she will head to the Oaks.”

Stablemate Paltrow Miss joins her in the Oaks, differing greatly in career starts.

The filly contests her mere fourth race Saturday, launching in New Zealand then Maher’s team, victorious first-up at Sandown and second at Caulfield subsequently.

“She’s obviously a lot less experienced, but profiles as a horse that warrants going over there,” Turnbull said.

“She still has a bit to learn, but she’s showing good ability.

“It will be tough for her, but she’s only three once, it’s the right time of year, so we’ll give her that chance.”

Profligate filly from Begg eyes 2026 Anzac Day Stakes success

Published

on

Smiling man in a blue plaid suit and pink shirt at an outdoor event, wearing a colorful striped tie.

In past seasons, Flemington’s Listed Anzac Day Stakes has unearthed quite a few useful racers.

The 1400m two-year-old feature has been won by the likes of Epimeles (2024), Tijuana (2022), Chaillot (2019), Vassilator (2017), Merchant Navy (2017), Long John (2013) and Confectioner (2003).

It provides perfect timing for an inexperienced galloper aiming to extend in trip distance and staying local rather than venturing interstate.

Grahame Begg’s charge Profligate is primed for just that, entering her sophomore start on Saturday en route to a spell for spring preparation.

On April 2, she triumphed at 1200m during her debut run at Pakenham.

“I wanted to give her another run before I turn her out and there really wasn’t another race to run her in,” Begg said.

“It’s not easy to win first-up at 1200 metres, let alone being your first start in a race, and to be truthful she wasn’t wound right up for it.

“She had jumped out well and showed us she was ready to go to the races and anything she did there was going to be a bonus.

“She was pretty raw but got the job done, so I thought ‘let’s roll the dice’ and run her over 1400 metres on Saturday on the big track, which will suit her, and there’s the added bonus of some Black Type.

“She can go for a break afterwards. It gives her a little bit more exposure and in previous years some nice horses have won it and gone on to do nice things.”

Profligate struck Begg as an understated filly set to develop physically, whom he termed a ‘big, tally leggy girl’.

“She’s a half-sister to Encap who ran third in the Doncaster last year and I liked her as a type, an athletic filly and she could develop into a spring filly, if we aim her right,” Begg said.

“I wouldn’t suggest she’s going to be a middle-distance horse, but she might be one to run up to a mile.

“You certainly don’t have to be running against the ones early in the spring as there’s plenty of options for a three-year-old in the spring, and the autumn which can then set them up as four-year-olds.”
