Kevin Costner’s Controversial Oscar-Nominated Biopic Joins a New Streamer Next Month
From his recent sweeping Western project, Horizon: An American Saga, to his Academy Award wins for Dances With Wolves, Kevin Costner has long been associated with historical dramas, though often they feature plenty of gun-slinging and action sequences. In 2016, he left his horse behind to instead tackle a historical tale set in 1960s NASA, with viewers able to catch this critically acclaimed drama on a brand-new streamer next month.
This December 1, the powerful Hidden Figures will officially join the ranks of HBO Max. Telling the inspiring tale of three female African-American mathematicians working at NASA — Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer), Katherine Goble Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) — Hidden Figures was the recipient of three Academy Award nominations, although sadly won none. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts a near-perfect 93% score from both critics and audiences, with the consensus on the site reading, “In heartwarming, crowd-pleasing fashion, Hidden Figures celebrates overlooked — and crucial — contributions from a pivotal moment in American history.” The film did come under fire for its apparent downplaying of the realities of segregation and the use of a fictional white hero. A synopsis reads:
“Three brilliant African American women at NASA, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history, the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.”
What Else Is Coming to HBO Max?
Hidden Figures might be one of the most critically acclaimed December arrivals on HBO Max this Christmas, but there is still plenty to love in the rest of the new batch. For other female-led flicks, why not try the likes of Charlize Theron‘s spy thriller Atomic Blonde, Sandra Bullock‘s beloved leading role in Miss Congeniality, or the quartet of Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett Smith in Girls Trip? Or perhaps for something different altogether, the upcoming slate of arrivals also boasts the highest-grossing animated movie of all time in Ne Zha 2, 1985’s The Color Purple, the family classic The Goonies, and so much more.
Hidden Figures will soon be available to stream on HBO Max. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest streaming stories.
