The Beloved Sci-Fi Series Destroyed By Battlestar Galactica

By Joshua Tyler

The 1990s were a golden age for science fiction, but even in the decade of infinite space awesomeness, no one in 1994 thought that the year’s 15th biggest movie would become the foundation for decades of sci-fi shows. But that’s exactly what happened with Stargate

For a time, Stargate seemed on the verge of challenging Star Trek and Star Wars for geek franchise supremacy, until it was ripped apart by Hollywood executives determined to turn it into something else. When fans revolted, it ended everything, and it’s only now, 15 years later, that this legendary sci-fi franchise might finally make a return.

This is why Stargate Atlantis failed.

The Perfect Spinoff

Set during and after the events of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis follows an international expedition that discovers the lost city of Atlantis. The myth is real, but the city isn’t on Earth. Instead, it’s an outpost built and long ago abandoned by the powerful Ancients in the distant Pegasus Galaxy.

Colonel John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and scientist Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Tori Higginson) lead a team through the stargate to explore the city and restore it to working order. Along with the team is Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) and a big ensemble, which would in season 2, even include a pre-fame Jason Momoa.

Rodney McKay Is One Of Sci-Fi’s Best Characters

We need to pause here to talk about just how great David Hewlett’s performance as Rodney is. He is, without question, the best character in Stargate, but also one of the best characters in science fiction. If Stargate Atlantis were given the respect it deserves, it would be mentioned alongside top-tier science fiction characters like The Doctor, Garak, Data, and maybe even Spock.

Rodney McKay is arrogant, impatient, and openly dismissive of anyone he considers less intelligent, but he’s also the person everyone relies on when things go wrong, which is constantly. Despite his abrasive personality, he evolves over the course of the series, showing loyalty, courage, and flashes of genuine humility. The core of the character is contradiction: he’s self-centered but dependable, cowardly but repeatedly heroic, and deeply insecure beneath the arrogance.

Every second Rodney’s on screen in the show is instant fun. If every episode were just David Hewlett on screen for 41 minutes, that would probably work, but the cast is a big ensemble.

Stagate Atlantis Was Killed While Succeeding

The Stargate franchise was firing on all cylinders, doing everything it could to feel like a cohesive, connected universe. It was working, and fans were loving it.

Stargate Atlantis was a hit for The Sci-Fi Channel, back in the days before it changed its name to the inferior “SYFY” with two Y’s. It was getting critical recognition too, in the form of four Emmy nominations.

Stargate’s flagship series, Stargate SG-1, was, by this point, off the air, but the franchise seemed to be in good hands with Stargate Atlantis. Then, out of nowhere, it was canceled at the end of season 5.

Amazingly, for a cable sci-fi series, the crew was allowed to end the show on their own terms, delivering a satisfying conclusion. It’s important that Atlantis does have a clear ending, so for any new viewers worried about yet another sci-fi classic cut short, don’t worry about it. However, ending it after five seasons was not the original plan for the show, and it’s not what the show’s producers really wanted.

Laying Blame For The Show’s Cancellation

The show’s early ending is partly my fault, and partly the fault of people like me. It’s only in the last few years that I’ve gone back to the world of Stargate. I watched SG-1 religiously when it aired, but to my shame, when Stargate Atlantis was first around, I didn’t pay any attention to it; I was too busy with Battlestar Galactica. In the days before easy streaming, catching everything on TV was difficult, and sometimes viewing habits were shaped by when you were available to watch. Many chose Battlestar Galactica.

The people in charge noticed. Execs at the SyFy Channel and Stargate’s production company, MGM, were apparently doing the same thing. They chose Battlestar Galactica, too. In fact, they became so obsessed with BSG that they decided to turn Stargate into it.

Never mind that Stargate had almost nothing in common with Battlestar Galactica, the higher-ups decided that was their direction. So, in 2009, SyFy and MGM canceled Stargate Atlantis after five seasons.

Turning Stargate Into Battlestar Galactica

The show’s ratings were still strong, and so was the response. But the network execs didn’t want Stargate Atlantis anymore, so the series was shut down, and all those resources were shifted to development on a new show called Stargate Universe.

Stargate Universe would basically abandon everything Stargate’s shows had spent decades establishing. It was set aboard a lost alien ship, with no connection to the larger Stargate world.

It didn’t work. Stargate fans were outraged at the cancellation of a beloved show in its prime and even more outraged when it was replaced by something that seemed like exactly what it was: a cheap attempt to cash in on the success of a totally different science fiction franchise.

While there was talk of a Stargate Atlantis direct-to-DVD movie, similar to those produced for Stargate SG-1, it never happened. Those plans were canceled when MGM entered bankruptcy in 2010, killing funding for further productions.

Why Stargate Fans Quit

These many broken promises and tonal changes caused Stargate fans to give up on Stargate as a franchise. Many refused to give the new show, Stargate Universe, a chance. While it did improve over time, the series never received enough support from former Stargate Atlantis viewers to match that show’s ratings. The Stargate Atlantis audience felt they’d been stabbed in the back, and, understandably, did not show back up.

Stargate Universe lasted two seasons before it too was canceled. The Stargate TV franchise, which had been going strong for decades and for a while seemed on the verge of supplanting Star Trek as the biggest geek universe, died with it. All because greedy Hollywood executives refused to embrace the success of Stargate Atlantis.

Stargate Rises From The Ashes Of Atlantis

Now, fifteen years later, work has begun on bringing Stargate back, with a new streaming series. It’s not a reboot, but a continuation. Joseph Mallozzi, along with much of the original Stargate Atlantis creative team, is involved.

It’s a tacit admission by Hollywood that Stargate Atlantis never should have been canceled in the first place. Maybe it’s not too late to right that wrong. In an era where scripted sci-fi television is floundering, it may be up to Stargate to save us all.

10 Greatest Soft Sci-Fi Movie Masterpieces, Ranked

Published

on

Amy Adams looking to the distance with her hands on her hair in Arrival

Science fiction is one of the most vast genres at filmmakers’ disposal, at least in terms of the sheer myriad of subgenres that they can use as vehicles for some of the strongest stories cinema has ever told. One of the ways in which this genre can be divided is into hard science fiction and soft science fiction. The former is strongly concerned with scientific accuracy and logic, usually dealing chiefly with natural sciences like biology and astrology. On the other hand, soft sci-fi explores soft sciences (like psychology and sociology) and is more concerned with emotions, speculative societies, and the relationships between its characters, rather than science or engineering.

Soft sci-fi is often looked down on even by sci-fi fans, who see it as a pulpy and lesser form of the genre that lacks the rigor and prestige of hard science fiction. Over the years, however, several of the greatest sci-fi films ever made have been on the softer side, showing beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is a form of science fiction as respectable as any other. From modern action blockbusters to classic horror movies, there are many ways of making a good soft sci-fi film.

‘Arrival’ (2016)

Canadian auteur Denis Villeneuve was already a well-established filmmaker going into 2016, but it was 2016 that introduced the world to his work in the genre that has come to define him: science fiction. Based on Ted Chiang‘s novella Story of Your Life, Arrival is an alien invasion story unlike any other, boosted by Jóhann Jóhannsson‘s hauntingly beautiful score and Amy Adams at her absolute (and most egregiously Oscar-snubbed) best.

Arrival is one of those films that can be argued to be both soft and hard sci-fi, but it definitely leans more toward the former. Its strong focus on linguistics, communication, and the concept of memory as it relates to identity is science fiction at its softest, even if Villeneuve relies on quite a bit of hard scientific exposition to show his characters’ intelligence. The result is one of the most thought-provoking films the genre had to offer at any point during the 2010s.

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ (2022)

An over-the-top indie comedy that mixes sci-fi and martial arts movie elements to tell a story about generational trauma, family, immigration, and existential dread? It sounds a bit all over the place, and it’s definitely not the type of concept that screams “Oscars material.” That only makes the DanielsEverything Everywhere All At Once and its winning seven Academy Awards all the more admirable.

Everything Everywhere relies on some elements of hard sci-fi to explain the mechanics of its multiversal elements, but that’s a relatively tiny part of a film that’s as soft as butter. It is one of the most perfect sci-fi movies of the 21st century, and it achieves that status through a focus on the family dynamics between its characters, a strongly philosophical story, and sci-fi elements that serve the emotional dimension of the narrative much more than they do its scientific dimension.

‘Alien’ (1979)

Ridley Scott is nowadays known as one of the most prolific and successful Hollywood filmmakers in history, but even the greats have to start somewhere. Alien was only Scott’s second-ever feature film, and it must have surely been ample proof for 1979 audiences and critics that they were witnessing the birth of a master filmmaker. Who, if not a maestro of the craft, could possibly revolutionize sci-fi horror in quite this way?

Alien is profoundly atmospheric, genuinely scary even after almost half a century of its release, and one of the most perfectly written sci-fi movies ever made. Psychological horror, character drama, and atmospheric tension are far more important to this late New Hollywood classic than scientific rigor. It makes for a sort of haunted house in space whose slow-burning approach to its story makes it even more suspenseful.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015)

After three decades away from the Mad Max universe that he revolutionized Australian cinema and low-budget action cinema with, George Miller returned to the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, easily one of the greatest legacy sequels ever made. It’s one of the most perfectly-directed action epics of all time, two hours of pure non-stop adrenaline and high-octane action.

The post-apocalyptic and dystopian genres are typically science fiction by nature, and this one’s no exception. But science isn’t really important to Miller here, nor any kind of particularly intellectual approach to the natural crisis that makes Max Rockatansky’s world a desert wasteland. That doesn’t detract from Fury Road‘s quality in any way, however. On the contrary, the movie’s soft approach to its genre allows it to focus on its rapid-fire pacing, exhilarating action scenes, and delectably over-the-top world-building.

Star Wars‘ status as a sci-fi franchise is a hotly debated topic. Whereas some people agree that George Lucas‘ immensely successful creation is a science-fantasy franchise at heart, there are those sci-fi purists who claim that this is mostly a fairy tale that just happens to be set in space. If anything, this debate is a testament to how ambiguous a blanket term soft sci-fi can sometimes be, but it only takes one look at Episode IV — A New Hope—the one that started it all—to realize that cataloging the story of the Skywalkers as soft science-fantasy makes the most sense.

It is the quintessential Hero’s Journey movie, a classic that has mostly aged like fine wine, and gave birth to what’s arguably the biggest transmedia franchise in history. Lucas is in no way, shape, or form interested in intellectual scientific rigor here. A New Hope is a space opera made up of pure action, emotion, and fun character arcs. It may not be the best soft sci-fi film ever made, but it might just be the most iconic example of the subgenre.

5

‘Children of Men’ (2006)

Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has spent the vast majority of his career in Hollywood, and it’s there that he made what some may consider his magnum opus: Children of Men, one of the best dystopian movies of the 21st century. Supported by Clive Owen‘s phenomenal lead performance, Cuarón’s admirably atmospheric direction, and Emmanuel Lubezki‘s legendary camerawork (which includes some of the most impressive long takes of any action film of the 21st century), it’s among the most thrilling movie masterpieces of all time.

The mysterious scientific crisis at the core of Children of Men might have provided a solid basis for an interesting hard sci-fi film.

But though the mysterious scientific crisis at the core of Children of Men (a case of worldwide infertility) might have provided a solid basis for an interesting hard sci-fi film, that’s never Cuarón’s focus here. Instead, Children of Men is a masterpiece dealing with themes of migration and the struggle to maintain faith in the face of an international crisis, which is about as focused on the social sciences as a sci-fi movie can possibly be.

4

‘Dune: Part Two’ (2024)

The differentiation between soft and hard science fiction first appeared in the late 1970s, attributed to Australian literary scholar Peter Nicholls. It was in 1965 that Frank Herbert‘s seminal space opera Dune came out, but though it predicts the coining of the term “soft science fiction,” it absolutely fits the definition of the subgenre in every way that matters. And though many fans of the source material believed for many years that it was impossible to make a film worthy of Herbert’s legacy, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two proved them wrong.Perhaps the best sci-fi movie of the last 15 years, Dune: Part Two definitely has some elements of hard sci-fi (though less significantly than Herbert’s novel), but those are minuscule in comparison to the film’s focus on softer elements. Light-speed space travel and psychic powers are crucial elements of this landmark of soft sci-fi, and the narrative is far more focused on sociology, ecology, and political science than any kind of natural discipline.

‘Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980)

The original Star Wars may be great, but there’s one film that’s almost universally agreed to be the best piece of Star Wars content ever created, and that’s Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back. Full of exciting action sequences, delightfully creative science-fantasy elements, and possessing one of the most untouchable twists in the history of sci-fi movies, it’s undoubtedly one of the most iconic examples of the genre.

The Empire Strikes Back is every bit as unconcerned with scientific rigor as its predecessor, and that’s perfectly fine—particularly when the soft sci-fi elements that director Irvin Kershner leverages here are so well-executed. Inventive, epic, and with some of the most engrossing world-building and fun character arcs of any 20th-century sci-fi movie, the fifth chapter of the Skywalker Saga is an example of science fiction at its soft best.

Grey Jedi

Disciplined, compassionate, and deeply attuned to the living Force, you have walked the path long enough to understand its demands — and accept them. You lead not through authority alone, but through example. You have felt the pull of the dark side and chosen otherwise, every time. That is not certainty. That is courage.

You are earnest, powerful, and brimming with potential — and you know it, which is both your greatest asset and your most dangerous flaw. You act before you think, trust your gut over your training, and sometimes confuse impatience for bravery. The Masters see something in you, though. The question isn’t whether you have what it takes — it’s whether you’ll be patient enough to find out.

You are not simply dangerous — you are certain, and that is worse. You have decided what the galaxy needs, and you have decided you are the one to deliver it. Your power is genuine and formidable, earned through sacrifice that would have broken lesser beings. But examine your victories carefully. Every Sith believed their cause was righteous. The dark side’s cruelest trick is that it agrees with you.

You were forged in fire and reshaped by those who found you at your lowest. You serve, because service gave you structure when you had none. Your allegiance is not to an ideology — it is to survival and to the master who gave you purpose. But there is something buried beneath the conditioning. The Jedi you hunt? You recognize them. Because you remember what it felt like before the choice was taken from you.

You have looked at the Jedi Code and the Sith Code and found both of them incomplete. You walk the line not out of indecision but out of conviction — you genuinely believe both extremes miss something essential. The Jedi don’t fully trust you. The Sith think you’re wasting your potential. They’re both partially right. But so are you.

‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ (2004)

Joel and Clementine looking at each other in Eternal-Sunshine-of-the-Spotless-Mind Image via Focus Features

On the basis of Charlie Kaufman‘s genius writing — one of the best screenplays of the 2000s for sure — Michel Gondry made Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. One of the most complex, creative, and beloved romance films ever created, this masterpiece is what many cinephiles immediately think of as soon as they hear the term “soft sci-fi,” and for a very good reason.

Kaufman is never interested in explaining the scientific viability of the memory-erasure technology at the heart of the story, because that’s not what the story’s about. Instead, the sci-fi elements of Eternal Sunshine are a plot device used to anchor its examination of romance, the psychology of love, and the importance of memories in human identity. This film is all about the emotional effects of its story on both its characters and the viewer, proving that soft sci-fi can still make for absolutely perfect examples of the genre.

‘Stalker’ (1979)

Two men in a misty mountain in Stalker Image via Goskino

Soviet auteur Andrei Tarkovsky was one of the greatest filmmakers that have ever lived, author of several of the greatest films of his time, including two of the best sci-fi movies of the last 75 years. While Solaris leans more toward the harder side of sci-fi, Stalker is about as cashmere-soft as the genre can possibly get. There’s also a strong argument to be made that it is both Tarkovsky’s strongest movie and the greatest European sci-fi film of all time, making it all the more of a must-see for those who love soft science fiction.

Stalker revolves around three men traveling to The Room, a mysterious place that grants those who visit it their innermost wish. There’s no semblance of even a remote attempt at an explanation of the scientific dimension of this story. Instead, Stalker is an arthouse movie through and through, and Tarkovsky’s approach to it is both poetic and sociopolitically charged. Slow-burning, emotionally stirring, and intellectually provocative, this masterpiece is a testament to the tremendous heights that soft science fiction can reach at its best.

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna’s Shocking Resurrection – Total Chaos Coming on B&B?!

Published

on

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada)

Bold and the Beautiful has Miss Dylan (Sydney Bullock) being harassed by a mystery person who says they have unfinished business. And then this week, somebody scares Dylan so badly at Forrester Creations that she screams in horror.

So, many fans are wondering if we’re getting Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada) back from the dead. It’s May sweeps and you know, we never saw her corpse or any aftermath of the crash. So, we’re going to talk about the chaos that would ensue if they really have brought Lisa Yamada back to B&B.

Dylan Gets A Creepy Phone Call on Bold and the Beautiful

So, recently, Dylan was alone in the design office at Forrester Creations when she got that creepy phone call from somebody who disguised their voice with a modulator and the mystery person told Dylan that they have unfinished business. And that completely freaked her out.

So, just from that alone, it definitely sounds like it might be Luna or somebody who is Luna adjacent. Now, we don’t know anything about Miss Dylan’s family, but I doubt they would be using a disguised voice app to hassle her. So, yeah, the unfinished business could be the fact that Dylan ran Luna down with her car.

Now, we know Dylan just happened to be driving by when Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown), Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan), Taylor Hayes (Rebecca Budig), Li Finnegan (Naomi Matsuda), Poppy Nozawa, and the whole squad, plus the cops were chasing Luna down, hoping to send her back to prison for her crimes. So, let’s talk about the chaos that may come if Dylan’s mystery caller is Luna and she’s really resurrected.

Luna May Target Dylan And Electra on B&B

So, first off, if Dylan is getting calls from Luna and she is alive and lurking, the psycho may target Dylan and also Electra Forrester (Laneya Grace) and she may be starting first with Dylan. And we could see the lunatic sneaking into Forrester Creations this week. Because after Dylan gets that creepy phone call, she’s in an office at Forrester Creations and she hears a rustling from the clothing rack and calls out asking who is it? And then somebody apparently comes out and Dylan screams. She’s clearly terrified.

Now, that’s either very clever editing in the promo to make something look amped up that’s not or it is somebody really awful. I mean, seeing Luna would definitely make Dylan scream like that. I can see Luna going after Dylan for the hit and run that supposedly killed her five months ago.

Bold and the Beautiful: Lunatic Luna Lurking?

Now, if Luna is alive, she probably needed some time to recuperate and recover from her injuries. But then she might have been creeping around watching people and she may know that Dylan moved into Will Spencer‘s (Crew Morrow) guest house at the beach and that Dylan fell for Will and that she kissed him a few times. I am sure Luna wouldn’t like that at all if she was alive. Because she feels that Will belongs to her.

So with that in mind, I think Luna would also want revenge on Electra for stealing Will from her, even though he was never willingly with Luna. I’m sure though that she hates Electra and wants her out of the way. So, yeah, I think she would target her.

Could Luna Still Be Pregnant on Bold?

Another bizarre tidbit is that there’s a chance if Luna’s alive that she is still pregnant with Will’s child. Now, if you remember, Luna told Will she miscarried right before she ran off and then Dylan ran her over.

And Deputy Chief Baker (Dan Martin) said the prison confirmed the miscarriage when he gave the death notification. But Luna had made some friends in prison and she might have lied to the medical staff or she thought she lost the baby, but then it wasn’t confirmed with an ultrasound or anything and then, you know, she found out later that she was mistaken. There’s lots of ways to do secret pregnancies. It’s a soap.

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna’s Return Pulls Will & Electra Apart

So, just like we never saw her corpse, which is why many fans figured she’s still alive, you know, we never saw actual medical proof of the miscarriage. So, if somehow she didn’t really miscarry, that would throw Will for a big loop and Electra as well. And if that’s the case, it could push Will and Electra even further apart. She’s already torn between RJ Forrester (Brayan Nicoletti) and Will.

So, if Luna’s alive and somehow still pregnant with Will’s child, that would be a game-changer. Electra in that case might stick with RJ for safety’s sake. Honestly, if you remember, also Luna dated RJ back when Joshua Hoffman was in the role, but I don’t think Luna was that into him since she faked being drugged so that she could get in bed with Zende Forrester (Delon de Metz).

Luna Could Team Up with Sheila on B&B

All right. Another thing we could see is Luna maybe teaming up with her wicked grandma, Sheila Carter. It could even be her helping terrorize Dylan with the phone calls. I think it would be honestly amazing to see the grandma-granddaughter villain duo of Sheila and Luna wreaking havoc. I think Sheila would be over the moon happy if Luna were alive. Because she was absolutely devastated when she died. You know, Sheila loved Luna despite all the bad things that she did, and she really wanted her to get a fresh start, make a new life for herself.

But now that Deacon has crushed Sheila by dumping her for Taylor, you know, Sheila’s at loose ends. She doesn’t have much of anybody who will give her the time of day other than Luna’s other grandma, Li. So, yeah, Sheila would be elated to have her granddaughter, Luna, back. Plus, Sheila might think, you know, what’s the point in trying to be good since she lost Deacon? So, Sheila might stir the pot if her awful grandchild is back.

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada)Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada)
Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Nozawa

RJ Could Use Luna Against Will on Bold

Another crazy thing that might happen is if Luna is resurrected, then RJ would probably try and use that to keep Will and Electra from reuniting. So, RJ could remind Electra what a threat that Luna was and how, you know, Will’s baggage will always haunt Electra and could put her life at risk.

And that is something that she struggled with before. You know, Will really hurt her when he didn’t tell her that Luna raped him until after he and Electra made love. So, after everything they just went through with Ivy Forrester (Ashleigh Brewer) and the Dylan issue, Electra might end things with Will if Luna is back.

Luna May Want Revenge on Her Family on Bold and the Beautiful

So, last but not least, if Lisa Yamada is back to Bold and the Beautiful, we could see Luna wanting to punish a lot of people like her toxic mom Poppy, her aunt/grandma Li, and her dad Finn Finnegan (Tanner Novlan). Because they are her family, and she felt like they deserted her and were happy that she died. Poppy Nozawa (Romy Park), I can definitely understand. Because she was a terrible mother who literally said she was happy that Luna kicked the bucket.

Now, Li nursed Luna back to health, and she wanted her to have a second chance, but then Li turned on her after Luna squandered all the help and second chance that she’d been given. And then, of course, there’s her dad, Finn, who chose Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) over her time and again. Even though Luna tormented Steffy and tried to kill her twice, I’m sure that Luna probably still sees herself as the victim in this situation.

And she may lash out and play poor pitiful me with her daddy issues. You know, they all did me wrong and they need to pay. Poppy and Li and Finn and Steffy and others if Luna really is resurrected for May sweeps. I do think vengeance would be her top priority. So, we’ll see what happens. Because in the end, this all could be much ado about nothing. Somebody’s just pranking Dylan and there’s no Luna back from the dead. We’ll see.

Andy Cohen Reveals Who Helped Crack ‘Summer House’ Leak

The mystery behind the explosive “Summer House” reunion leak has taken an unexpected turn.

Early suspicion quickly fell on the cast, but the narrative has since flipped, with Andy Cohen revealing that an unlikely source played a key role in uncovering what really happened behind the scenes.

Andy Cohen Shuts Down ‘Summer House’ Cast Leak Claims

From the moment the audio surfaced online, speculation ran wild about who could have been responsible.

Many fans quickly pointed fingers at the cast, assuming someone on stage had broken trust.

However, Cohen made it clear he never believed that narrative. Speaking on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live,” he said per Us Weekly, “There were these hot takes blaming the cast, which I knew immediately — I was like, ‘The cast did not leak this.’”

Cohen added, “I was like, ‘This is stupid,’ and I love this cast and I just, I was like, ‘Oh, now people are blaming this cast.’”

His frustration didn’t stop there. Cohen acknowledged the emotional toll the accusations took on the cast, saying, “I will say, I felt so bad in the next 24 hours after that, that the cast was … feeling the need to come out and say, ‘I didn’t do it. I didn’t leak it.’”

‘Summer House’ Reunion Audio Leak Sparks Investigation

The controversy began shortly after the cast wrapped filming for the season 10 reunion, which reportedly lasted nearly 12 hours.

Within hours, audio clips featuring heated exchanges between Ciara Miller and Amanda Batula began circulating online, drawing immediate attention.

The leaked recording also included the voices of other cast members, fueling speculation and intensifying the drama. As the situation escalated, Bravo moved quickly to investigate the breach.

A spokesperson for the network told Us Weekly, “This represents a serious breach of trust and a clear lack of respect for the cast, crew, and the integrity of the production process.”

They added, “We take this matter very seriously and have launched a full investigation and we will take appropriate action based on our findings.”

While Bravo deployed a team to track down the source, Andy Cohen revealed that the breakthrough didn’t come solely from official channels. Instead, help arrived from an unlikely place.

He admitted he was “so mad” about how the situation unfolded, noting that investigators were immediately assigned to the case.

However, the biggest twist came when a fan stepped in with key information.

According to Cohen, “a Bravo fan came forward” and played a pivotal role in identifying what happened behind the scenes.

He emphasized the importance of that contribution, explaining, “Let me say that, though this team of investigators were on it, a Bravo fan — who you’re gonna hear more about — cracked the case.” He added, “Delivered crucial information.”

The network had completed its investigation by April 26 and issued a formal update on the situation.

The findings shifted the narrative away from the cast and toward someone behind the scenes.

As The Blast reported, Bravo released a statement where it confirmed, “An investigation into the recent leak of the Summer House reunion audio has concluded that the audio was an unauthorized recording and distributed by an individual involved in the production of the reunion.”

The network also clarified, “As a result of the findings, appropriate action has been taken.”

Importantly, Bravo addressed the rumors directly, stating, “There is no evidence that any member of the cast was involved in the recording of the audio.”

‘Summer House’ Fallout Continues As Network Issues Warning

Even after identifying the source, the fallout from the leak has continued to ripple across the “Summer House” fanbase.

Additional clips began surfacing online, prompting further concern from the network.

Bravo issued a warning in response, saying, “We take these matters seriously and will continue to take appropriate measures to respond to the unauthorized distribution of our content.”

They continued, “We are aware that there is additional improperly obtained audio circulating and we caution all parties and platforms to refrain from posting, sharing, or amplifying any unauthorized audio.”

Cast members, including Kyle Cooke and KJ Dillard, had already publicly denied involvement, reinforcing the network’s conclusion.

With the source now identified and the cast cleared, the focus shifts to how the network will prevent similar incidents in the future and whether the drama surrounding the leak will have lasting consequences for the show.

Blueface’s Twitch account is now unavailable due to a violation of the platform’s community guidelines. This, reportedly, occurred after he and Nevaeh Akira got into a heated argument after she alleged their current pregnancy was planned. But last week, Blue’s daughter was the one making waves online. How A Superhero Sequel Dumped By Disney Became Hulu’s Biggest Hit

How A Superhero Sequel Dumped By Disney Became Hulu's Biggest Hit

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Superhero movies aren’t as big as they once were, with Marvel’s latest, Captain America: Brave New World struggling to surpass the box office of Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania, but even then, the fall of Hellboy, from big-budget Guillermo del Toro production to an afterthought tossed onto Hulu, is astonishing. Yet, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, the fourth film in the series, starring the third actor, Jack Kesy, to portray the demonic good guy, debuted as the Number One film on Hulu in 2025.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the most direct adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comic yet, and even a low-budget film with cheap effects can’t keep a good story down. If you haven’t seen it, now is the time.

A Different Type Of Demon

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is not a globe-trotting adventure like the other films starring Ron Perlman and David Harbour, instead, it’s set in the forests of Appalachia in a small town filled with witches and haunted by a dark presence. Hellboy and rookie B.P.R.D. agent Bobbie Jo Song (Adeline Rudolph), a character not found in the original graphic novel, get wrapped up with Tom (Jefferson White) a soldier coming home to confront the The Crooked Man (Martin Bassindale) and reconcile with his witchy ex-girlfriend. Tom explains that the demonic entity provides power for a steep price, and though this is a younger version of the hero since the film is set in 1959, the B.P.R.D. agent knows a thing or two about contracts with demons.

The local coven of witches, disciples of The Crooked Man, gets involved, while Reverend Nathaniel Watts (Joseph Marcell) lends his blessings to the good guys. As with every good Hellboy story, The Crooked Man culminates in a final battle in a decaying, gothic structure as threats both real and imagined engulf the heroes. It’s a satisfying, fairly comic-accurate story that has delighted most of the fans of the original series, but it is by no means perfect.

No Budget, No Problem

Right from the opening scene on board a train, you can tell that Hellboy: The Crooked Man will not be nearly as visually interesting as del Toro’s two films. Everything looks washed out, and if you didn’t know any better, you’d think it was a mid-2000’s SyFy original movie. To say that the film is carried by the strength of the dialogue, parts of which are word-for-word from Mignola’s comic, is an understatement, and that’s before The Crooked Man himself makes an appearance.

Martin Bassindale plays the monster of folklore with the right amount of creepiness, accented by the sounds of bones cracking and readjusting whenever he moves, but it’s hard not to imagine how much better he would have looked with anything resembling a budget behind the film. Shot on the cheap by director Brian Taylor (director of Crank, Gamer, and creator of the bonkers detective series, Happy), Hellboy: The Crooked Man has the look and feel of a fan film, in the best way possible, and was clearly a labor of love for the source material and not an attempt at another blockbuster. It was destined to be a streaming hit, and thankfully for fans of the B.P.R.D., that’s exactly what it is today.

Not only is Hellboy: The Crooked Man proof that a scaled-back superhero film can work if expectations are kept in check, it’s also a love letter to the off-beat supernatural gothic comic that never quite hit the mainstream. The film has more in common with Evil Dead than it does Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but thanks to everyone giving it their all, it’s one of Hulu’s best movies, and if the streaming numbers impress the right people, there’s a chance it could even relaunch the dormant franchise.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man debuted at number one on Hulu, but it’s now available to rent on services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

’Euphoria’s’ Latest Episode Toes The Line With Gory Scene

Published

on

HBO's Season 3 Premiere of 'Euphoria' at TCL Chinese Theater

Euphoria” continues to spark ongoing conversation and intense fan reaction, and the third episode of the current season features the most jaw-dropping moment yet.

After weeks of anticipation, the wedding of Cassie Howard and Nate Jacobs, played by Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, respectively, finally arrived, and to say it was filled with drama is an understatement.

If you have been keeping up with the current season of HBO’s hit show “Euphoria,” you’re aware that Nate Jacobs is in serious debt — and the effects of his not paying said debt finally came to a head on what was supposed to be the happiest day of his life.

After exchanging vows and officially becoming husband and wife, Nate is visited by an angry loan shark during the wedding reception that he owes $600,000 to, who provided a stern warning of what was to come.

However, Nate likely didn’t expect to lose an extremity in the process.

As the couple returned home, they were greeted by the loan shark and one of his henchmen, who promptly beat Nate to a pulp, and finished the job by…wait for it…cutting off his pinky toe.

Fans immediately reacted online to the bloody and gory scene.

“The way I would divorce Nate and his toeless foot with the quickness after all of this is insane. You ruin[ed] my wedding day,” one user in the “Euphoria” Reddit forum wrote.

“ngl cassie having a breakdown that she’s bleeding and completely unconcerned / paying no mind to nate being violently assaulted was hella funny,” another user shared.

“Honestly, my favorite episode of season 3 so far!,” a fellow Redditor wrote. “All the tension building up in the wedding for the moment that Nate gets beaten in his home with Cassie was INSANE!”

Others noted that the scene made them a bit sick to their stomach.

“Cutting off his toe got me good god damn,” one commented. “I thought they were gonna just rip off his toenail, which is also bad, but wow,” another remarked.

“Yeah, I was just sitting down to eat dinner too,” a third wrote. “nah fr i had to look away, also the background music while they were all screaming made me so uneasy,” another commenter shared.

Fans Previously Shared Their Excitement Of What Would Happen At The Wedding

As the wedding served as the basis for Cassie’s much-criticized OnlyFans storyline, fans anticipated what would happen once the big day finally arrived.

In the “Euphoria” Reddit forum, fans let loose ahead of the episode, sharing what they think will happen and what they hope will occur.

“I’m so ready for this episode, but I swear to god Cassie will make me die of cringe by the time this season is over. Their wedding dance looks horrifying,” a Redditor wrote. “The wedding already looks like a disaster, and I’m here for it,” a second user shared.

Another noted a moment in the episode’s teaser that pointed to comments from the previous season.

“Cassie’s mom saying ‘you’re my masterpiece,’ when she’s in her tight white wedding dress, is an exact parallel to Cassie’s parents saying ‘you’re perfect,’ when she was a tween in a tight white romper – just before they sent her out to be leered at and fondled by adult men,” the user commented.

“Okay, I’m actually so ready for this episode. Jules’s ‘remember me,’ also having the whole cast together,” a Reddit user wrote. “We’ll finally see what has changed between all of them, and not just in bits and pieces.”

“I have a theory about the Cassie & Maddie storyline,” a fellow user began. “I think she won’t screw Cassie during the wedding, but after. We saw that Cassie deleted her account after Nate found out, BUT from trailers we can also see that it’s not the end of her career…She definitely continued working with Maddie.”

Backlash And A Four-Year Hiatus Have Not Impacted Euphoria’s Ratings

OConnor / AFF-USA.com / MEGA

According to Variety, episode two of the current third season of “Euphoria,” which aired April 19, amassed 8.5 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max in its first three days. Those numbers match the viewership of the April 12 season premiere.

Additionally, the global total for “Euphoria” season three has surpassed 20 million viewers to date, a 68% increase from the second-season premiere in the same timeframe.
