The Scottish-founded supermarket is gearing up to open a new branch in the summer.
Supermarket giant Farmfoods has confirmed when one of its Aberdeen-based branches will permanently close. It comes ahead of an upcoming new store set to be opened in a few months.
The frozen foods supermarket currently operates four sites across the North East area, with three located in the city. However, in a few days time, staff members at the George Street branch will pull down the shutters for the final time.
The firm confirmed that the store, which is located just outside of the Bon Accord Centre, will close for good on Sunday, May 3. Ahead of the closure, the frozen foods giant is said to have launched a clearance sale, with up to 50 percent off in a bid to remove all stock.
As reported by the Press & Journal, the George Street branch was one of three that remained in the city after the original Woodside store was cut in February last year. Located on Great Northern Road, the site had been open since the 70s, making it the supermarket’s longest-standing Aberdeen branch.
A spokesperson said: “Our shop on George Street, Aberdeen will close this coming Sunday after a 50 percent off all stock closure sale.
“We’re grateful to all customers who have shopped with us at the site over the years.”
Nevertheless, despite the George Street closure, Farmfoods is gearing up to open a new large store that is set to be located on Don Street. While it is currently unknown when the forthcoming branch will open, it is reportedly set to be this summer.
It will take over the former Aberdeen Barracks near King Street that have since been demolished, with working beginning on the new site last year. Plans for the Old Aberdeen store were initially refused due to fears over lorry deliveries.
However, this was overturned in March last year after Farmfoods bosses were able to persuade elected members to overrule the decision.
Farmfoods is a Scottish-founded supermarket that has been operating across the UK for over 70 years. While its headquarters are located in Cumbernauld, the firm’s roots can be traced back to Aberdeen, as it started as a meat processing business in the North East in 1954.
Since opening its first branch in the 70s, the now closed Woodside store, it has grown to operate over 300 stores across Great Britain, with more than 100 based in Scotland alone. It also operates four distribution centres nationwide and is said to employ over 4,000 workers.
It’s not the only news for Aberdeen’s high street, as IKEA is also set to open its brand new store in the city centre. Work on the new ‘Plan & Order’ Point that will open in the Union Square Mall is already underway, although the opening date is yet to be confirmed.
Back in December, the Swedish flat-pack giant confirmed it was closing down its only store in the North East that could be found on Wellington Circle. It confirmed it would be relocating to the major shopping centre’s car park section, taking over a unit that was formerly owned by Decathlon.
Meanwhile, Scottish-founded footwear giant Schuh will be opening just a few doors down from the new IKEA. Set to open sometime in May, advertisements for the new branch are already in place, as they read: “Aberdeen – this is not a drill. Your new Schuh store is opening soon.”
Schuh’s origins date back to 1981 when its first store was opened in Edinburgh’s North Bridge Arcade. As of today, the company has gone on to become one of the UK’s leading footwear retailers, operating around 118 stores nationwide, with around 18 in Scotland.
More recently, Aberdeen has also been included on the list targeted locations for a new Lidl supermarket. The German discounter recently published its list of areas for a potential new site, with Garthdee included.
