Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor discusses retirement

The 62-year-old was diagnosed in 2009 with breast cancer when she was 46 years old.

The actress, best known for playing Sally Metcalfe in the ITV soap since 1986, learned about her own diagnosis on the same day she filmed the scene where she shared her diagnosis with her on-screen husband.

Speaking to Prima magazine, she said she would play the storyline differently if she had the chance after going through the experience herself.

She said: “I think there are moments in the show that, like the breast cancer storyline, which, if I went back, I think I would have done very differently.

“In the sense that because I got it myself, I realised what it was like to go through breast cancer and how much you hide your pain from people you love.

“I think I didn’t play it that way.

“I played it that Sally was very emotional and upset, and I think that now I would have gone back and played it completely differently because real-life experiences make you go, ‘Ah, I shouldn’t have done that, I shouldn’t have done this’.”

She added: “The first day when I came back after having six months off… I felt incredibly emotional and so grateful that… I’d not taken it for granted at all, but to go away and think, ‘Will I ever go back?’ and then to be doing what you enjoy doing, you’re just so grateful for having that opportunity again.”

Dynevor described the role as the “perfect job” and said she never in a “million years” thought she would be on the famous cobbles for four decades.

She said: “I just thought it was going to be a year at the most, but I look back now, and I think, ‘Gosh, four decades, that is a long time.’

“Not many people are in the same job for 40 years any more, let alone acting.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to retire.

“I’ll stay here as long as they want me; if they don’t want me any more, I’ll still try to do something, because the idea of retirement just sounds awful to me!

“When you love what you do, why would you want to retire? I come into work every day and I’m surrounded by wonderful young people who are showing me what’s going on in the world and the fashions, and they’re exciting and interesting. I love young people.

“So the idea of just packing it all in and sitting at home and going, ‘Right, what shall I do today?’

“Just absolutely not.”

And councillors heard that five high schools showed positive destinations for their leavers higher than the Scottish average.

Education officers told councillors that the department continued to work to provide tailored packages to improve the opportunities for looked after children and students with additional support needs.

Of this year’s leavers 21.6% moved into employment, which is consistent with the previous year.

There was an increase of 1.55% in the number of young people going into Further Education, rising to 27.3% which was above the Virtual Comparator, the National Average and the highest in the last 5 years.

The bulk of school leavers (39.66%) entered Higher Education, which was a 0.5% improvement on the previous year and an improving picture over the last 3 years.

In other fields 2.49% of young people entered training, which is a 0.09% increase on in 2023/24. 1.38% of young people moved into voluntary work, consistent with performance in 2023/24. 3.11% of young people entered Personal Skills Development programmes.

This was a 0.01% increase from 2023/24, and the highest level in the past six years. The percentage of young people recorded as unemployed not seeking was 1.29% which has continued to improve over the last 3 years and was lower than our Virtual Comparator and the National Average.

A meeting of the Education PDSP heard that there were 2,249 school leavers this year. A report to committee by Beverley Akinlami, the Youth Services Manager said: “There was an increase of 43 leavers compared to last year and 95.6% of school leavers went into a positive destination as recorded in October 2025.

The report added: “This was a 0.2% drop from 2023/24, and was 0.1% below the Virtual Comparator and the Scottish Average. Five schools achieved SLDR above the Virtual Comparator and the Scottish Average.

“In addition 93.1% of young people identified as having additional support needs (ASN) moved into a positive destination, which was a 0.8% increase compared to 92.3% in 2023/24. Of the students in the 20% most deprived households (SIMD Quintile 1) 92.6% went into a positive destination, which was a slight increase compared to 92.5% in 2023/24.”

Councillor Pauline Orr said: “Gaps still exist. What plans are there to improve opportunities for those school leavers who are looked after or those who have additional support needs?

READ MORE: Partnership between Lothian and Shelter Scotland raises £12,800 in 12 months

Ms Akinlami said: “We do have approaches across a range of partners to understand what needs are and remove barriers and find appropriate interventions to support these leavers.”

The report outlined that 80% of young people looked after by the local authority (LAC) moved into a positive destination, compared with 89.2% in 2023/24. This decrease was primarily the result of the much smaller cohort among this year’s leavers. In 2024/25, there were 20 LAC leavers, of whom 4 moved into a negative destination.

This contrasts with 37 LAC leavers in 2023/24, meaning that small changes in individual outcomes now have a proportionally greater impact on the overall percentage.

Kristyna MacSween, the council’s ASN Manager told the meeting education officers continued to monitor the data. She added that interventions were made as early as possible to “work on enhanced pathways to secure positive destinations” for ASN leavers.

Prince William and Kate send ‘important message’ on family life with new wedding anniversary photo

Published

on

Daily Mirror

The Prince and Princess of Wales have marked their 15th wedding anniversary today by sharing a new family photo – and one expert believes it contains several hidden messages

Kate and William kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on their wedding day

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ family portrait to mark their 15th wedding anniversary sends an “important message”, according to an expert.

William and Kate shared a holiday snapshot of their family, lying together in the grass in the sunshine, relaxing barefoot during the Easter break. In the image, taken by photographer Matt Porteous, Louis has his legs resting on Kate as the family of five – all in shorts apart from Kate – lie shoulder to shoulder on their backs in a row.

Their black cocker spaniel Orla, makes an appearance next to William, as does their second dog – a brown spaniel whose name is yet to be revealed and which William and Kate kept from a litter of Orla’s puppies.

And according to body language expert Judi James, the family composition of the snap gives a glimpse of life behind closed doors. She told the Mirror : “Now that George, Charlotte and Louis are a little older the message from this pose is not that William and Kate are just celebrating their roles as parents and as husband and wife, but that they’re primarily embracing and celebrating their own ability to act like children too, as this intertwined, tumbling, playful group are all showing their capacity for freedom and expressiveness here.

“This is an important message, not just for William and Kate, with William in particular having a role that normally requires formality and emotional caution, but it also seems to hold a soft message that flies in the face of claims from across the Atlantic that you need to escape the confines of royal life to ever feel free.

“This pose involves swathes of green grass, casual clothing and children that are confident and happy to show their faces and play with a lack of inhibition despite their royal roles.

“William shows he is able to be as much of a big kid as he wants in this family group, and the couple show how that freedom to express emotions of love, joy and playful fun will be a constant, even when William is on the throne.”

The photograph, capturing William and Kate’s happy moment with their youngsters, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, comes after the prince and princess faced challenging times when Kate was diagnosed with cancer in 2024.

She revealed last year she was in remission, and the Waleses made a fresh start by moving to a new home, the eight-bedroom Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, in the autumn.

And Judi added: “Central to this family group though, is Kate. The pose is built around her to show how much she is cherished. Her illness is clearly a silent feature here but her pose is one of her supporting and protecting her brood here, making her look like the loving strength of the group.

“Kate’s facial expression and her body pose make her look relaxed, joyful and almost blissfully happy in the family group. She’s wrapped in legs and arms and hands here in a gesture that suggests a desire to keep her safe, but the children also look playful and joyful, as though they are celebrating her return to health.”

Fallin teenager spreads mental health message with gruelling running challenge

Published

on

Daily Record

It’s the second year in a row that Kyle Paton has taken on the knackering bid – all to spread the word about men’s mental health and raise money for related causes.

Super-fit Fallin teenager Kyle Paton is spreading the message about men’s mental health by putting in the miles around Stirling for the second straight year.

The 19-year-old is already well through a gruelling fundraising effort where he is running a five-kilometre run every day for 75 days to support the Andy’s Man Club charity, which supports men by coordinating weekly peer-to-peer support groups and cutting down on isolation.

It’s a repeat from Kyle on the first attempt at his 75-day challenge after raising more than £1,000 for the Brothers in Arms charity last year.

The apprentice roofer can often be seen pounding the pavements around Fallin, as well as routes all over Stirling and even out to the Kelpies near Falkirk.

On his JustGiving support page, Kyle writes: “Mental health struggles aren’t always visible. Many people carry things quietly and never reach out for help.

“This event is about awareness, consistency, and showing up for people close to us and for people we may never meet.

“Over 75 consecutive days starting on April 14, I’ll be completing a run each day to help raise awareness around mental health and the importance of support, conversation, and checking in on one another.

“I did the same last year and learned how much having the right people around you can help. Support matters. Presence matters. Reaching out matters.

“The dates mirror the same timeframe as last year, as a reminder that mental health awareness isn’t a one-off conversation it’s something that needs consistency.

“If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone you trust. And if you’re not, be the person who checks in.”

Speaking to the Observer, Kyle continued: “I’ve had my own personal struggles growing up, so I understand how hard things can be. Sometimes it can feel isolating, like you stand out in a negative way.

“I wanted to do something to raise awareness and show support for others going through similar situations.

“I chose Andy’s Man Club because they’re a well established organisation that genuinely makes a difference in people’s lives, helping men who are struggling and giving them a place to talk.

“My first run started at the Fallin Miners, and I’m planning for the final run to finish there as well.

“Hopefully I’ll have friends and family there to support me, and anyone who wants to join in for the last run is more than welcome.”

Kyle’s proud aunt, Cherie Stevenson, from Bannockburn, added her own note of support for “model nephew” Kyle’s challenge – which has already raised more than £700 after just two weeks.

Cherie said: “I could get emotional about what he is doing; I’m just really proud of him and thinking of other people’s mental health.

“He has a great circle of friends who have been so supportive and have been joining him out there for runs and keeping him company.

“He puts his routes on Strava and posts on social media to allow people to keep track of what he’s up to and he’s really got the bug for running now.”

GP Settles Once And For All If Incline Walking Really Improves Your Fitness

Published

on

GP Settles Once And For All If Incline Walking Really Improves Your Fitness

Medical advice provided by Dr Suzanne Wylie, a GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor.

From Japanese walking to retro walking, it turns out there are plenty of ways to enjoy the health benefits of a stroll without fixating on 10,000 steps (experts think 7,000 steps daily might do the job just as well, anyway).

And some research suggests that incline walking, or walking on a slope, could burn 7% more fat as a proportion of calories expended than running without placing as much strain on your joints.

But running does the job faster, meaning a 15-minute sprint will probably still burn more than a 15-minute incline walk. And that’s only one metric.

“Both incline walking and running can be excellent forms of exercise, and the question of which is ‘better’ really depends on the individual’s current health, fitness level and goals,” GP Dr Suzanne Wylie told us.

Here, the doctor shared the health pros and cons of both.

What are the benefits of incline walking?

“Incline walking, particularly on a treadmill or up hills outdoors, can significantly raise the heart rate while remaining low impact, which means it places less stress on the joints than running does,” Dr Wylie said.

A 2021 study found that walking on a treadmill with either a 10% or 16% incline (slope) engaged participants’ muscles and raised their heart rates more than walking at a 0% incline, or flat ground.

“For many people, especially those who are new to exercise, carrying excess weight, managing joint pain or recovering from injury, incline walking can provide meaningful cardiovascular benefit and muscle engagement, particularly in the glutes and calves, without the repetitive impact that running involves,” Dr Wylie told us.

“It can also help build lower body strength and endurance over time while being more sustainable for some individuals.”

What about running?

Running, the GP told us, “is generally more time efficient in terms of cardiovascular conditioning and calorie expenditure, and it can improve aerobic fitness more quickly in those who are able to tolerate it”.

And, Dr Wylie said, “It also places greater demand on the bones, which can be beneficial for bone density, and on the heart and lungs, which can improve overall stamina”.

For healthy people, the idea that running damages your joints may be a myth: the strain could actually make them stronger.

“However, it is not suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain joint conditions, significant obesity, pelvic floor concerns or a history of recurrent injuries,” the doctor said.

And in one study, almost a third of new runners gave up the more taxing sport within six months of picking it up.

So, which is best for me?

“In practice, I would encourage patients to choose the activity they are most likely to maintain consistently, because long-term adherence matters far more than whether one exercise burns slightly more calories than another,” Dr Wylie ended.

“For many people, a combination of both, adjusted to their ability and health status, can offer a balanced approach to fitness, strength and overall wellbeing.”

In case you needed any more motivation, recent research has suggested that a mixture of exercise – including cardio, strength training, and a range of activities from tennis to dancing – seems to be best for longevity.

Two Darlington shops closed for selling illegal vapes and cigarettes

The MM Mini Market on North Road and Cockerton Mini Market on West Auckland Road were ordered to close for three months by magistrates in Peterlee on Wednesday (April 29).

Between April 2024 and January 2026, Darlington trading standards visited Cockerton Mini Market three times, seizing illegal goods with a sale value estimated at more than £12,000 including 436 packets of cigarettes, 144 packets of hand rolling tobacco and six vapes.

The items were found hidden in black rubbish bags among the bins and in the garden.

Seizures were also made from a vehicle parked at the rear of the premises.

Illicit cigarettes were also sold to test purchasers on five separate visits.

The MM Mini Market only opened in September 2025, but reports started to emerge of intimidating behaviour, including a man touting for business from a car outside.

Four test purchases also confirmed the sale of illegal cigarettes from the business which has close links to neighbouring SB International Food Store.

SB International Food Store was shut down for three months in December after selling illegal vapes and cigarettes, including to children, and has not reopened.

Cllr Jim Garner, cabinet member for stronger communities on Darlington Borough Council, said: “Local residents and businesses have been adversely affected by the protracted criminal activity, anti-social behaviour and nuisance associated with these retail premises.

“While we are delighted to have halted their operations, our work to frustrate and disrupt the illegal tobacco market across Darlington continues.

“Delivering safer, healthier communities, ensuring local people live well for longer and building a strong, sustainable local economy are three of our main priorities and we will do everything in our power to rid the town of criminal trading practices which undermine  honest local businesses and place  public health at risk by encouraging smoking and targeting young people with pocket money prices.”

Inspector David Littlefair, from Darlington Neighbourhood Police Team, added: “This type of criminal activity helps fund organised crime groups and goes hand-in-hand with drug dealing, child exploitation and money laundering.

“We remain committed to protecting our local communities from the very real dangers posed by these businesses and continue to work closely with the council to end these illegal operations.”

Turkey ‘deserted’ as tourists are ‘put off’ returning to holiday destination

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

Turkey is said to be “deserted” as tourists are allegedly “put off” returning to the popular holiday destination. It comes as some say hotels and sunbeds have been “empty”

A popular holiday destination is reportedly “deserted”, with claims that tourists are giving the country a wide berth, and it’s not the first time such suggestions have emerged. Videos circulating online show near-empty hotels and beaches, with some suggesting that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East may be deterring visitors.

In recent years, however, other factors have also been cited as having an impact, with holidaymakers pointing to the rising cost of visiting as an additional concern. The travel story came to prominence on TikTok when one tourist shared footage from their hotel, describing it as “silent”.

The clips make it plain to see just how quiet things appear, with barely a soul by the pool and sunbeds sitting vacant. Having visited Turkey recently, the tourist suggested that visitors appeared to be staying away in droves.

The social media user wrote alongside the footage: “The war in Iran has definitely affected tourism. I’m in Turkey right now, and the hotel feels almost deserted.

“Only around 10 guests here. Even the weather hasn’t helped, so the whole place feels unusually quiet.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

One commenter was quick to note that it isn’t yet summer, to which the tourist replied: “The hotel staff said they’d usually have around 400 guests at this time of year, but due to regional conflicts affecting tourism, business has dropped significantly.”

Adding to this, several weeks ago a social media user known as Sophie Does Thingz described the popular holiday destination as “super quiet” during her stay. She noted that “all the tourists decided not to come to Turkey this year”, a comment that sparked considerable discussion online.

In response, one person wrote: “I hate it. I want to leave.” Another added: “Girl, the weather is a bit cold here compared to other years. I think tourists will begin to come in a month or two.”

Several others pointed out that the peak season had yet to begin. One commented: “The season hasn’t started yet that’s why.”

Another similarly suggested: “It’s not even season.” The subject clearly struck a chord with many.

What is happening?

According to reports, Turkey’s tourism sector has experienced a downturn since March in certain areas and industries, largely attributed to the conflict in Iran.

There has reportedly been a surge in booking cancellations and a halt in travel from neighbouring Middle Eastern countries. While eastern border regions have been severely affected, major coastal resorts such as Antalya and Bodrum are said to have remained comparatively stable.

Furthermore, demand from European and British tourists is reported to remain robust. Nevertheless, in recent years, visitors have admitted to being “put off” travelling to the destination for other reasons.

Some holidaymakers have claimed that Turkey has become “too expensive” in the past few years. This is largely due to the country experiencing rampant inflation and a dramatic collapse in the value of the Turkish Lira.

As a result, many no longer consider the once-beloved hotspot to be a “cheap” holiday option. Despite this, it remains a firm favourite with some travellers.

Figures suggest that millions make the trip each year, with some holidaymakers saying they’re “booking flights now” such is their eagerness to visit.

Rupert Lowe Challenged By Minister Over Harassment Probe

Rupert Lowe Challenged By Minister Over Harassment Probe

Restore Britain MP Rupert Lowe was owned by a government minister after calling for a nationwide investigation into the harassment of women in the street.

The right-winger told the Commons that “women all over Britain … feel intimidated, harassed and abused in their own town centre”.

Lowe claimed it was “disproportionately … committed by young foreign men, imported from cultures and religions that treat women like dirt on the bottom of their shoe”.

The Great Yarmouth MP added: “Will the minister today commit to a national audit of street harassment, intimidation and sexual offending by nationality and immigration status so that British people can finally see the scale of the problem?”

But education secretary Bridget Philipson pointed out that a probe by a top lawyer found Lowe and his staff himself had “mistreated” women on their team.

She said: “I note that an investigation by a KC into the honourable member’s conducted concluded that there was ‘credible evidence’ that he had mistreated two female members in a way that ‘seemed to amount to harassment’.

“I don’t want to hear anything from him about violence against women and girls or harassment.”

The report was conducted by Jacqueline Perry KC on behalf of Reform UK after Lowe was suspended by the party.

Following its publication, he was kicked out of the party.

In response, Lowe said: “There was no bullying. There never has been any bullying. Using such claims to damage me through my staff is shameful.”

He added: “Reform has put my team through hell in an attempt to smear my reputation.”

Will Justin Rose’s McLaren club switch pay off?

Published

on

Justin Rose tees off

Rose will play with McLaren irons and is likely to use the more forgiving game-improver versions at the long end of the bag and blades for the rest.

This is not as risky as changing his entire set-up. Driver, putter and ball are usually the most crucial elements, so the move is not as drastic as it might appear.

Nevertheless, he is teaming up with a company that is totally new to the golf industry and, while range data might be encouraging, the acid test can only come on the course.

Rose is making this change in the heart of the golf season when majors come thick and fast. The only tournaments where he can significantly alter and improve his already stellar career are done and dusted three months from now.

That is where the risk lies. If there are any setbacks, they could lead to a wasted season in the blink of an eye. And at the age of 45.

“The clubs are feeling great,” Rose said. “A lot of my own preferences have gone into the irons that I’m playing.”

But new clubs can lead to unexpected outcomes and, under the pressure of competition, that can become discomfiting.

Rose says he is aware of the potential pitfalls.

“There’s going to be a refinement process,” he said.

“You can test all you want. You’ve got to get the clubs in play, and there’s going to be little mini situations out there – different lies, all sorts of things.

“But in the long term I don’t see there being an issue at all.”
