Carlos Prates Strengthens Title Case After Dominant Showing at UFC Perth

Published

on

The Fighting Nerds have been one of the most notable and popular things about the world of MMA in the last few years. That team has made its name thanks to the success of a number of its fighters in the UFC.

Of the bunch, perhaps the most successful and notable of the Fighting Nerds team so far is Carlos Prates. And Prates put an exclamation mark on that claim with a major win this weekend at UFC Perth, stopping Jack Della Maddalena.

It was a beating. Prates pressured JDM early, and then landed 41 significant strikes on the former champion. Prates also battered Della Maddalena’s leg with kicks, scoring knockdowns of JDM in the second and third rounds. That second knockdown would lead to Prates landing follow-up shots and scoring the TKO.

This now marks two consecutive bouts where Prates has defeated a former UFC welterweight champion. This past November at UFC 322, he put a beating on Leon Edwards, knocking him out cold in the second round.

But let’s just take a look at the picture of Prates’ overall UFC tenure thus far – and just see how much he’s accomplished.

Prates earned a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2023, finishing a then-undefeated Mitch Ramirez.

Prates then fought four times in 2024, competing against Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, Li Jingliang, and Neil Magny. Four wins, four finishes (all KO/TKOs), four post-fight bonuses. That is a first-year stretch that practically screams Rookie of the Year.

Prates’ sole blemish in the UFC came at UFC Kansas City in April 2025, when he took on Ian Machado Garry in a title eliminator. Prates did not seem like himself, unable to figure Garry out. Prates put a beating on Garry in the fifth, but he was unable to get a comeback finish in time.

It was a disappointing loss for Prates and the people that follow him. He’d need a big-time rebound performance next time out to ensure he’s still in the title picture.

So what does he do? Land a spinning back elbow on Geoff Neal at UFC 319 – one of the top knockouts of 2025. And now he’s followed that up with wins over a pair of former welterweight champions.

Prates has now won seven UFC bouts since 2024. He’s earned finishes in all of those fights. He’s earned performance bonuses in all of those fights. The win over JDM is the only time a fight he’s won has gone past round two.

And the only guy he’s lost to in the Octagon? That man won another title eliminator against Belal Muhammad this past November. Now, Garry is being targeted to challenge Islam Makhachev for the welterweight title in the main event of UFC 330 this coming August in Philadelphia.

That’s far from a terrible loss.

Prates may not get the next immediate welterweight title shot. But if he takes on another former champion or rising star in the welterweight ranks – for example, respectively, Muhammad or Michael Morales – and he gets another highlight finish (let alone another win) – then Prates can’t be denied a title shot any further.

Four-star defensive lineman Alifeleti Tuihalamaka commits to USC

Published

on

USC’s 2027 recruiting class is continuing to grow. On Saturday, the Trojans picked up another notable commitment, landing four-star defensive lineman Alifeleti Tuihalamaka.

Tuihalamaka is a Southern California product, attending nearby Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California. 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 181 overall player and the No. 21 defensive lineman in the class of 2027.

With the addition of Tuihalamaka, USC now has 13 commits in its 2027 recruiting class. Of those, nine are ranked as either four or five-star recruits by 247Sports Composite. 247Sports currently ranks the Trojans’ 2027 class as No. 3 in the country, behind only Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Tuihalamaka is the younger brother of former Notre Dame defensive lineman Junior Tuihalamaka. The elder Tuihalamaka was recruited by the Trojans in the 2022 class, but ultimately chose the Irish instead. Now, five years later, Lincoln Riley and USC are trying to right that wrong by landing his younger brother.

Wild will be without Joel Eriksson Ek and Jonas Brodin for first two games of series vs. Avs

Published

on

DENVER (AP) — The Minnesota Wild will be without forward Joel Eriksson Ek and defenseman Jonas Brodin for the first two games of their second-round series against the Colorado Avalanche because of lower-body injuries.

Neither player made the trip to Denver. Wild coach John Hynes said the team is still “making a couple decisions on the lineup” ahead of Game 1 on Sunday night.

The Avalanche will be without defenseman Josh Manson, who missed the series clincher against the Los Angeles Kings last Sunday with an upper-body injury. Avs coach Jared Bednar said Nick Blankenburg will slide into Manson’s place. The team acquired Blankenburg in a deal with Nashville on March 4.

“He’s played good in the time he’s been with us,” Bednar said. “We got him for a reason — like the way he moves, like the way he moves the puck. He plays with a little bite. He’s got to stay within himself. It’s going to be a challenge for him tonight, because the thing we’ll miss with (Manson) is the size, the strength, the physicality.”

Eriksson Ek had three goals and two assists in the Wild’s first-round series win over Dallas. He finished with a 56.4% faceoff win rate. Danila Yurov and Hunter Haight could be possibilities to take Eriksson Ek’s place.

“Ekky’s a big part of the team,” Hynes said. “When you lose a guy that plays that many situations, you have to do it collectively as a group, and it’s not all on one guy.”

Brodin didn’t play in Game 6 against Dallas.

Hynes said given the break between Games 2 and 3 — the teams play Tuesday and not again until Saturday — that “both those guys will be reevaluated and see where it goes from there.”

World Relays: GB&NI’s mixed 4x400m team win bronze

Published

on

Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s mixed 4x400m team won bronze at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana, while four other GB teams also qualified automatically for the 2027 World Athletics Championships.

Alex Haydock-Wilson, Lina Nielsen, Jake Minshull and Yemi Mary John finished third in three minutes 8.24 seconds, behind the USA and Jamaica.

A place on the podium qualifies the 4×400 mixed team for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest in September.

GB’s men’s 4x100m, the women’s 4x400m and the mixed 4x100m line-ups progressed to Sunday’s finals from Saturday’s heats, earning them a place in Beijing next year.

The women’s 4x100m team, who were disqualified after finishing second in their first day heat, came in second in their Sunday repechage to take one of four remaining World Championships slots.

However the men’s 4x400m quartet, who finished seventh in their first race, placed third in their repechage and will bid to qualify for Beijing on time at a later date.

The women’s 4x400m squad finished fourth, while the men’s and mixed 4x100m teams both failed to get the baton round in their finals.

British athletes won medals in all five relay events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but failed to reach the podium at last year’s World Championships in Tokyo.

Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back after capitalising on a loose pass, before helping create the equaliser for Cody Gakpo moments later.Liverpool, missing key forwards Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak due to injuries, still managed to put United under serious pressure. However, both teams continued attacking in search of a winner instead of settling for a draw.Mainoo Delivers Big MomentThe decisive moment came late in the game when Mainoo collected a loose clearance and calmly fired the ball into the bottom corner. The young midfielder recently signed a new five-year contract after impressing under interim manager Michael Carrick. The victory guarantees United a top-five finish and Champions League qualification after two seasons away from Europe’s biggest club competition.
