The outbreak was reported aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which was travelling from Argentina to Cape Verde.
The MarineTraffic global shipping website identified the vessel as a Dutch-flagged passenger cruise ship. It located it as docked in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday night.

South African authorities told the BBC the first person to show virus symptoms was a 70-year-old passenger who died on board. His body is now on the island of Saint Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic.
Hantavirus infections are typically linked to exposure to the faeces or urine of infected rodents (PA)
His 69-year-old wife also became ill on board and was evacuated to South Africa, where she died in a Johannesburg hospital.
The World Health Organisation said that it was working with authorities to evacuate two other passengers with symptoms from the ship.
Hantavirus infections are typically linked to exposure to the feces or urine of infected rodents, WHO said.
While rare, WHO said they can be spread between people and they can lead to severe respiratory illness. There is no specific treatment or cure, but early medical attention can increase the chance of survival.

In a statement, they said: “WHO is aware of and supporting a public health event involving a cruise vessel sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. To date, one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, and there are five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected individuals, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.
The Hondius is currently docked off Cape Verde (Marine Traffic)
“Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing, and epidemiological investigations. Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew. Sequencing of the virus is also ongoing.
“Hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure (exposure to infected rodents’ urine or faeces). While rare, hantavirus may spread between people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness and requires careful patient monitoring, support and response.”
Hantavirus was in the news after the late actor Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from hantavirus infection in New Mexico last year. Hackman died a week later at their home.
The m/v Hondius is run by tour company Oceanwide Expeditions, described as the “first-registered Polar Class 6 vessel in the world, meeting the latest and highest Lloyd’s Register standards for ice-strengthened cruise ships.”

A FCDO spokesperson said: “We are closely monitoring reports of a potential hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship Hondius and stand ready to support British nationals if needed. We are in touch with the cruise company and local authorities.”
The Independent has contacted Oceanwide Expeditions for comment.
Head Coach Neil Harris said he is “so proud of the players” following their promotion

Cambridge United Football Club have been promoted to Sky Bet League One after a draw against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday (May 2). The draw confirmed an immediate return to the third tier for the team who have finished the season in third place.
Cambridge boss Neil Harris has led his side to the best defensive record in the entire EFL, conceding just 33 goals from 46 games. Harris admitted “nerves were jangling” before his side were able to celebrate the promotion.
He was quick to highlight director of football Mark Bonner’s role in helping transform the club after last term’s misery. “Mark has moved heaven and earth to transform a losing culture and build a structure as well as an identity,” he said.
“I’m so proud of the players and delighted for Mark. It’s a great day for all of us and the fans who have travelled in numbers and who have given us sold-out stadiums at the Abbey.
“The biggest mention of all is for our owners, Paul Barry and Mark Green, who have invested their own money into the club. Mark because he has been sucked into it and wants to have a bit of fun, he wants to win.
“And Paul because he is just the barmiest fan I’ve ever come across. We should be privileged to have him as an owner as what he does for this football club often goes unnoticed.”
Harris continued: “We weren’t the better team today, but we had the chances again, even in the 97th minute, to win it which has been the case so many times this season. We’re over the line, although the nerves were jangling.”

Cambridge’s celebrations were delayed as an air ambulance had to land on the pitch to take a home fan who had suffered a medical emergency to hospital.
“Hopefully the fan who has been taken to hospital will be okay,” said Crewe boss Lee Bell. “Football is insignificant in the scheme of things when things like that happen.”

Aries
March 21 to April 20
Your enthusiasm can be palpable as you power into this new week, Aries, and nothing can seem too daunting for you. But with Venus and the Moon in an opposition, it suggests as much as your desire to get things done quickly can be helpful, tact and diplomacy will ease your path most. This will be especially so if you are interacting with a close family member.
Your appreciation of the good things in life can be accentuated today, and your generosity can also flourish. But there may also be something that you feel spurred to purchase that comes from a deeper yearning, maybe even an unexpected nudge to snuffle an item that you hadn’t anticipated that you’d want. However, in contrast, you may decide to vent an old grievance.
With your ruler, Mercury, having moved into a more reflective area and coming into a challenging right angle with the powerful Pluto later this week, a revelation is possible, but maybe what comes up and out will be for the best. And you could be lifted by the support and enthusiasm of one friend. Their encouragement can just chime in the right way for you, Gemini.
With Jupiter in your sign in a powerful angle to Mars, the planet of action and desire, in a very prominent zone, if there is a goal that you really want to attain, your drive and passion to achieve this can be extremely strong. But ironically, you could also be tempted to pivot into something completely different and let go of what no longer brings joy or feeds your soul.
Your natural warmth and charisma can burn brightly as we enter this new week. And with Venus and the Moon aligning beautifully, you can resonate in just the right way with the people you encounter. But something you’ve thought about deeply over the last eight or nine months, but hasn’t yet materialised, could start to do so, as this week unfolds, Leo.
The Moon occupies a sensitive and homey area, which may see you wanting to ease into the week without too many demands. But another part of your nature may be relishing a challenge. What will it be? There can be a growing sense that staying as you are is unlikely to be an option. And even if you just mull this over today, this realisation can grow stronger.
Cosmic messages for Cosmic messages for Virgo today
Libra
September 24 to October 23
You realise more than any other zodiac sign, Libra, that it’s not just words and ideas that count, but also tone. And your appreciation of framing things in just the right way can be heightened today. But beneath this can certainly be a lot of desire and thrust to get your message across, and it most certainly can be heard today and by someone influential.
Part of you may want to be super-efficient, productive, and functional. Another part of you may want to completely escape the very things you know you should really be doing. And with the Moon and Venus forging an evocative connection, if escapism does win out, you’ll want to do so indulgently. Will you feel guilty? Perhaps, but perhaps not that guilty!
It’s likely going to be a pacey start to the week for you Archer, with the Moon in your sign forging an energetic link to the robust Mars in your sister fire sign of Aries. Also, your ruler Jupiter is linking to Mars, and you’re probably going to want to be very dynamic in all the moves that you make. With the harmonising Venus also supportive, people can be responsive.
Capricorns have a reputation for being cautious and even reserved. And that can seem to play out today with the Moon starting the week in a more reflective area. There is certainly a lot to mull over, but despite this, there can be one person that keeps coming up on your cosmic radar, that you could still be drawn to reach out to – be it for business or pleasure.
Although the Sun and Mercury are bringing energy to your home and family situation, it’s your ideas sector that continues to be especially illuminated, and the energetic Mars’ connection to the expansive Jupiter today can put you in the mood to tackle a challenge. But if you can add your creativity and flair to the mix, it’s likely the perfect formula, Aquarius.
Your traditional ruler, Jupiter, continues in a flamboyant zone through to the end of June and is encouraging you to showcase your creative brilliance in all its different guises. If you can find a way to convert those talents into improving your income or even sense of self, this can certainly be a fine time to push forward. Your need for recognition is also heightened today.

Lepas is planning to launch three new SUVs in the UK market over the next 12 months.
Lepas is a new firm that is owned by the Chinese giant, Chery Automotive. It falls under Chery’s ‘export strategy’ programme, which introduces new brands specifically for European markets. Already, brands such as Jaecoo and Omoda have seen success under this umbrella.
The first model to arrive in the third quarter of this year is Lepas’ flagship model, the L8. It will come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, using a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and 18kWh battery pack to deliver a claimed electric range of up to 55 miles.
The second model to follow will be the L6 mid-size SUV, rivalling the Kia Sportage. It will be available with petrol, hybrid and electric options. Lepas has not revealed details on the petrol model’s powertrain, but the hybrid will be fitted with a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit mated to an electric motor, while the EV will be hooked up to a 67kWh battery pack and an electric motor to provide a claimed range of up to 270 miles.
Finally, the L4 will complete the line-up and will be the smallest model in the Lepas range. It’s a compact crossover that will rival the Volvo EX30 and BMW iX1 when it goes on sale next year.
However, powertrain details are limited at this stage, though Lepas has confirmed that it will be available with an electric powertrain.
Further details on Lepas’ SUV range will be revealed later this year, with orders set to follow.
The grass snake, the UK’s longest native reptile, is typically associated with southern and central England and parts of Wales.
However, recent anecdotal evidence and scattered public reports suggest the species may be making a quiet comeback in parts of the North East.
Sightings have been reported near wetlands, large gardens and compost-rich areas, habitats that are ideal for the elusive snake.
“It’s both exciting and unexpected,” said one local naturalist.
“For years, grass snakes were thought to be locally extinct here, but we’re now hearing more frequent, though still unconfirmed, reports, particularly around water-rich environments.”
Once widespread across Britain, grass snake populations in the North East declined sharply over recent decades due to habitat loss, climate change and increasing urban development.
Until recently, many conservationists believed the species had vanished entirely from County Durham.
Unlike the UK’s only venomous snake, the adder, grass snakes are completely harmless to humans.

They are recognisable by their olive-green colouring and distinctive yellow-and-black collar behind the head, and can grow up to 1.5 metres in length.
They are also strong swimmers, the only native UK snake regularly found hunting in water.
“Grass snakes are closely tied to wetlands,” explained BBC Countryfile on its website.
“They primarily feed on amphibians such as frogs and newts, but will also take small fish and occasionally mammals.”
Despite their rarity, experts say suitable habitats still exist in County Durham, particularly in areas such as the Wear Valley, Teesdale and parts of the Derwent Valley.
The species typically emerges from hibernation in spring when temperatures rise above 10°C. Breeding soon follows, with females laying eggs in warm, decomposing material such as compost heaps in early summer.
Hatchlings usually emerge between late August and September.
Wildlife organisations are now encouraging the public to report any sightings, while stressing the importance of not disturbing the animals.

“If grass snakes are genuinely returning to the North East, it’s a very positive sign,” said a spokesperson for Durham Wildlife Trust.
“It suggests that, in some places, our landscapes are recovering and can once again support species that were previously lost.”
Two thrilling semi-finals saw Murphy twice overturned a two-frame deficit in the final session against legend John Higgins to reach his fifth final. He has not won the sport’s greatest prize since triumphing as a qualifier in 2025.
His opponent will be 22-year-old Yize, in his first final, who saw off Mark Allen in stunning fashion.
Allen failed to pot a simple black, in one of the most shocking misses in Crucible history, as his chance of a first final went up in smoke, allowing Wu to mop up and then win the deciding frame.
Wu’s win means China have a finalist for a second successive year, after Zhao Xintong beat Mark Williams in the 2025 final.

A theatre performance in Cambridge was once cut short by real-life chaos that ended in catastrophe
Cambridgeshire has seen ghastly tragedies over the years, including a shocking event in Burwell that saw 78 people die in a village barn fire and the rail disaster at Abbots Ripton that cost 13 lives. One particular tragedy claimed the lives of four people right in the middle of a theatre performance.
In 1802, a fire alarm was raised during a performance when the audience rushed to the door in panic and confusion. Naturally you’d assume that any injuries or deaths would have been caused by a fire, but that was not the case.
During the chaos amid people’s panic, four people were trampled on leading to their death. The horrific event happened at the Stirbitch Theatre, which no longer exists. It was revealed that fire alarm was in fact fake.
Four years after the horrific event that cost four theatre enthusiasts their lives, the building was pulled down as it was rumoured to be unsafe, according to historian Enid Porter. A new theatre was built next to Newmarket but was only in use for seven years before it was replaced by another one in 1816.
The manager of the theatre reportedly put a notice in the newspaper expressing their regret for the false fire alarm. He offered a reward of 100 guineas to anyone who could identify the people who raised the false alarm and was keen to ‘punish’ them.
The name ‘Stirbitch’ is a variant of the similar name, ‘Sturbridge’ or ‘Steer Bridge’ referring to the bridge where cattle crossed the river on the way to Newmarket. Given that the theatre sat on Newmarket Road, nearby Stourbridge Common, the name was derived as a description of its location.

As a result of cutting the chicanes on the final lap, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has received the equivalent of a drive-through penalty, which is 20 seconds added onto his overall race time.
That drops him from sixth to eighth.

FIA statement on Leclerc’s penalty
“The driver informed us that the car appeared fine save that the car would not negotiate the righthand corners properly.
“Given this problem, he was forced to cut chicanes on the way to the chequered flag. We determined that the fact that he had to cut the chicanes (i.e. to leave the track) meant that he gained a lasting advantage by leaving the track in that manner.
“The fact that he had a mechanical issue of some sort did not amount to a justifiable reason. We accordingly impose a Drive Through penalty on Car 16, given the number of times the car left the track and gained an advantage.
“We also considered whether there was an additional breach in continuing to drive a car with an obvious and discernible mechanical issue. We determined that there was no evidence of there being an obvious of discernible mechanical issue. We therefore took no further action in relation to that potential infringement.”

George Russell, after finishing fourth:
On race: “Difficult race, the beginning felt OK, those early laps I was in the fight but the hard tyre was just nowhere.
“The last 10 laps were much more competitive, I made some big changes to my differentials and brake bias, much closer to what Kimi has been running, made a bigger impact than I thought – still not a good weekend, this place is a real tough one for me. The real test will come in the next few.”
On Kimi – have you underestimated him? “Not at all. He’s a fantastic driver and he’s been exceptionally quick since day 1, you don’t win all of the championships as a youngster if you don’t have the speed, but I’ve still got the confidence in myself, I’ve also been, I’ve not forgotten how to drive.

Jorvik Tricycles has rebranded with new visuals, four updated product categories, and its most affordable model yet, all inspired by the city’s cultural ties and Viking history.
The rebrand was led by HUB, an award-winning integrated marketing agency.
Rob Shaw, CEO of HUB, said: “Working with the team at Jorvik over the past 12 months has been incredibly exciting, and we’re proud of the transformation we’ve achieved together.
“This rebrand marks a natural next step as the business continues to cement itself as a leading name in the electric tricycle category.
“Our brief was to reimagine the brand for today’s riders while honouring its heritage.
“By drawing inspiration from historic rune lettering, we created an identity that celebrates craftsmanship and history while modernising the branding through bold typography and vibrant colours.”
The new brand identity features references to Viking runes and introduces a restructured product range.

Tricycles are now grouped into Everyday, Mountain, Explore, and Mobility categories, with renamed models that reflect Nordic and Viking themes of exploration and freedom.
The updated model names include RIDA, DRAKKAR, VANDRA, and FRELSI.
Coinciding with the rebrand is the launch of the RIDA model, named after the Nordic word for “to ride”.
The fully electric RIDA tricycle has been available since March 1.

James Walker, founder and managing director of Jorvik Tricycles, said: “This rebrand marks an exciting new chapter for Jorvik Tricycles.
“Our goal remains focused on growing Jorvik into a recognised national brand while staying true to our Yorkshire roots and the values that have shaped the business from day one.
“By evolving the brand, expanding our range, and introducing more accessible models like the RIDA, we hope to make it easier for more people across the UK to experience the freedom and joy of cycling.”
