Brewers’ rejuvenated offense takes aim at Max Fried, Yankees

Misiorowski (2-2, 2.84 ERA), who left his last start with a right hamstring cramp after 5 1/3 hitless innings, will be opposed by left-hander Max Fried (4-1, 2.39).
The Yankees rallied for a 9-2 victory over Texas on Thursday with a six-run sixth inning to finish their homestand 6-1. Cody Bellinger had three hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Yankees left fielder Jasson Dominguez was carted off after crashing into the wall while making a catch on the first play of Thursday’s game. Dominguez sustained a low-grade left AC sprain in his left shoulder and will be placed on the injured list, the team announced. Concussion tests have been negative.
Milwaukee, which was idle Thursday, won at St. Louis 6-2 on Wednesday behind Andrew Vaughn’s three-run homer. It was his first homer since coming off the injured list.
The Yankees, tied for the best record (26-12) in the majors with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves, have won 16 of their last 19 games. Bellinger is hitting .471 (16-for-34) over his nine-game streak with seven doubles, two triples, two homers and 14 RBIs. Aaron Judge leads the majors with 15 homers, including three in his last five games.
Fried allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings in his last start, but did not get the decision in an 11-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. In his two starts prior to that, he did not allow an earned run over a combined 14 innings.
“I was happy with being able to limit and not give up the lead, especially when stuff started kind of going sideways,” Fried said following his last start.
Fried is 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA in six career starts vs. Milwaukee.
The Brewers, whose 24 homers are just one ahead of San Francisco for fewest in the major leagues, have been bolstered by the return of Vaughn and Jackson Chourio.
Chourio, who went on the injured list Opening Day morning with a fractured left hand, is 6-for-9 with three doubles in two games back.
Chourio hit 21 homers with 78 RBIs last season after 21 homers and 79 RBIs as a rookie in 2024. Vaughn, who also went on the IL with a fractured bone in his left hand after playing in the opener, had nine homers and 46 RBIs in 64 games with the Brewers last season after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox.
“He’s done those types of things for us in the past, and it’s great to have him back and in just his second game having that type of impact,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of Vaughn following Wednesday’s game.
Misiorowski was dominant his last time out with eight strikeouts and two walks in a 6-1 win at Washington, retiring the final 12 hitters before cramping. He had 43 pitches of more than 100 mph, third most in the pitch-tracking era.
Misiorowski has 59 strikeouts in 38 innings, an MLB-best 13.97 per nine innings. Opponents are batting .172 against him. He will be facing the Yankees for the first time.
The meeting is the first since the Yankees swept last season’s opening series in New York, outscoring the Brewers 36-14.

Asisat Oshoala has criticised the refereeing in the UEFA Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
Bayern hosted defending champions PSG at the Allianz Arena hoping to overturn the 5-4 defeat they suffered in the first leg in Paris.
Unlike the entertaining first meeting, which produced nine goals and received praise from football fans across Europe, the second leg was a tighter contest. PSG secured a 1-1 draw to qualify for a second consecutive Champions League final and remain in the race to defend their crown.
The French champions opened the scoring early in the match when Ousmane Dembele scored after only three minutes to extend PSG’s aggregate lead to 6-4.
Bayern found it difficult to break through PSG’s organised defence for most of the game before Harry Kane grabbed a late equaliser in stoppage time to make it 1-1 on the night.
The game was overshadowed by several controversial officiating decisions that left Bayern unhappy, especially over two penalty appeals in the first half.
Referee Joao Pinheiro refused to issue a second yellow card to Nuno Mendes after the ball struck his arm in the 29th minute. Instead, the official awarded PSG a free-kick after ruling that Konrad Laimer had handled the ball earlier in the move.
Shortly afterwards, Bayern players also appealed for a penalty after a clearance from Vitinha appeared to hit the arm of Joao Neves inside the penalty area, but the referee ignored the protests.
Many Bayern supporters believed those decisions had a major impact on the result, as a red card or penalty could have changed the outcome of the tie.
Reacting on X, formerly known as Twitter, Oshoala expressed disappointment with the officiating and suggested that mistakes from match officials are still common despite the use of VAR.
PSG will now face Arsenal in the Champions League final in Budapest on May 30.
Arsenal reached the final after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate in the other semi-final tie involving Ademola Lookman.

Zab Judah has offered his initial thoughts on a clash between David Benavidez and Dmitry Bivol, who could collide for the undisputed light-heavyweight crown later this year.
Both sides have already held preliminary talks for their potential encounter, which would see Bivol look to become a two-time undisputed champion.

“It’s a good fight – I like it. I’ll still say the same thing: another [Benavidez] stoppage. I predict the same thing [as the Ramirez stoppage].
“David Benavidez has his own style in boxing; he’s the first fighter we know with this style. He’s mastered it.
“So there is no real defence for this style yet. Until people can learn this style completely, you’re not going to know how to defend against it.”
While an interesting observation from Judah, many would argue that Benavidez’s high-volume style could at least be tested by the sharp footwork of Bivol. Fans will hope to find out soon.

What caused the fight between the two midfielders?

The tension is believed to have been building for months amid frustration over the club’s performances and internal dynamics. According to Onda Cero, Valverde made several aggressive tackles on Tchouaméni during training sessions, while MARCA reported that the Uruguayan refused to shake hands with his teammate after the earlier confrontation.
Additional reports from El País suggest Valverde has been unhappy since September following a Champions League match against FC Kairat where he remained an unused substitute. Frustration reportedly grew over his role in the team, especially after publicly expressing dissatisfaction about playing at right-back.

The balance between bat and ball in modern-day cricket has once again come under the spotlight, with Sunil Gavaskar voicing strong concerns over how heavily the game now favours batters in the T20 era.With massive scores becoming routine in the ongoing IPL 2026 season and totals above 250 no longer considered safe, Gavaskar believes bowlers are being left with very little protection. The former India captain pointed to shorter boundaries, stricter fielding restrictions and the growing power of modern bats as key reasons behind the growing imbalance.
Writing in his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar specifically questioned the current interpretation of the wide bouncer rule. According to him, fast bowlers are being unfairly penalised when a short ball passes only slightly above the batter’s head.“There’s the ‘wide ball’ call for a bouncer going barely over the batter’s head. This is like asking a fast bowler to bowl with one hand tied behind his back,” Gavaskar wrote.He argued that while grounds still have enough space to push boundaries further back, bowlers are instead being put under even more pressure through strict laws. Gavaskar suggested that pacers should be allowed a little more margin when bowling bouncers.“If that rule can be tweaked to allow the quick a margin of one foot, approximately the length of the bat handle, above the head while in his batting stance, that would give the fast bowler some relief and encouragement to fire in some more,” he added.Gavaskar also revisited an earlier period in limited-overs cricket when bouncers were completely banned. He recalled how lower-order batters were promoted as pinch-hitters because they knew bowlers could not attack them with short-pitched deliveries.“This is not to pat my back, but when I took over as Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee, the other members joined me in bringing the bouncer back in the format, albeit one per over per batsman. The pinch-hitters disappeared. More importantly, the bowlers got one of their weapons back,” he wrote.The batting great further questioned why bowlers should face restrictions when batters are free to attempt any shot they want.“You don’t restrict a batter from playing any shot, do you?
