David Benavidez called out for the fight he wants most: “Someone has to shut his mouth”
David Benavidez could be about to have his future resolved after being called out for the fight he is craving.
Benavidez affirmed his status as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world earlier this month when he successfully stepped up to cruiserweight and stopped Gilberto Ramirez inside six rounds to win the WBA and WBO titles at 200lbs.
There have been plenty of different options floated for ‘The Mexican Monster’ since that victory, including another clash at cruiserweight against Jai Opetaia, and even an ambitious move to heavyweight to face unified champion Oleksandr Usyk.
The most likely scenario is a return to 175lbs where he holds the WBC title, in order to have an undisputed battle with WBA, WBO and IBF light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, with Benavidez himself stating that the Russian is number one on his hit list.
That fight may now be set to become a reality, after a post by the IBA revealed that Bivol’s trainer Gennadi Mashyanov wants his man to face Benavidez in order to ‘shut his mouth.’
“My personal goal right now is this guy Benavidez – who let’s just say, talks a lot. We’ll see what he’s really made of. I’d like him to stop running his mouth. For that to happen, someone has to get in the ring with him and shut it for good.”
Bivol returns to action later next week when he faces mandatory challenger Michael Eifert, and it seems a win there could now pave the way for an undisputed showdown against Benavidez.

Eddie Hearn blocked one man from facing Conor Benn before promotional split: “I was trying to get him”
Conor Benn called for several high-profile fights during his time with Matchroom Boxing, but former promoter Eddie Hearn appears to have ruled out one potential in-house clash.
Since Benn’s departure from Matchroom, Hearn has spoken openly about previous discussions surrounding the welterweight’s career, recently claiming that Benn turned down proposed world title fights with Rolando Romero, Lewis Crocker and Josh Kelly.
Now, former IBF and WBC welterweight champ Jaron Ennis has revealed that he pushed for a fight with Benn while both fighters were aligned with Hearn, only for the idea to be dismissed immediately.
Speaking on the All The Smoke Fight Podcast, Ennis said:
“I told Eddie to let me fight him.
“I said that I would fight Conor, he [Hearn] turned around and said ‘absolutely not’. I’m going to get in trouble but he said ‘absolutely not’. I was trying to get him though.”
‘Boots’ Ennis – who the promoter brands ‘the next Terence Crawford – did praise Benn and suggested he has continued to improve in recent outings.
“He is good and I think he is getting better.”
Ennis is currently preparing to challenge Xander Zayas for the unified super-welterweight title next month, with the American aiming to become champion in a second weight class. Should Benn move up to 154lbs in the future, Hearn may be more keen on making the fight happen after their promotional split.
In the meantime, the Brit looks to challenge Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight belt later this year.

Ex-Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso set to take Chelsea managerial job: Report | Football News
Xabi Alonso is set to be named Chelsea coach after reaching an agreement with the Premier League club, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press on Saturday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the appointment has not been publicly announced.
Alonso talked with Chelsea in the past week and is expected to sign a four-year contract.
It would be the Spaniard’s first job since lasting less than eight months at Real Madrid. Alonso left Madrid by mutual consent in January after poor results and widespread media reports that he lost control of the locker room.
Despite the short tenure at the Bernabeu Stadium, Alonso’s reputation remained high across Europe after leading Bayer Leverkusen to a German league and cup double and breaking Bayern Munich’s dominance of the Bundesliga.
Chelsea has been searching for a new coach since firing Liam Rosenior last month.
Rosenior was the second coach to be fired since the turn of the year following the departure of Club World Cup winner Enzo Maresca in January.
Alonso would become the fifth permanent coach appointed by Chelsea’s American owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital since they bought the club in 2022.
After firing Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea brought in Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Maresca and Rosenior in the search for a coach who could bring sustained success.
Club icon Frank Lampard was given an interim role and current interim Calum McFarlane is in his second spell in charge of the first team this season.
Despite spending more than $1 billion on new signings, Chelsea has yet to challenge for the Premier League title under its U.S. owners. It did, however, win the Club World Cup last year as well as the UEFA Conference League.
This season it looks likely to miss out on qualifying for the Champions League for the third time in four seasons. It is also going to end the season trophyless after losing to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Ronaldo’s trophy wait drags on after Al-Nassr falls to Osaka in AFC final | Football News
)
Cristiano Ronaldo unhapy with Al Nassr’s transfer policy
Cristiano Ronaldo’s wait for a first major trophy in Saudi Arabia continued when Al-Nassr lost to Japan’s Gamba Osaka 1-0 in the Asian Champions League Two final on Saturday.
A first-half goal from Turkish forward Deniz Hammat helped Osaka secure Asia’s second-tier tournament despite Al-Nassr dominating possession and having more attempts on goal.
The defeat came five days after Al-Nassr was seconds away from winning the Saudi Pro League for the first time since 2019, only to concede in stoppage time and leave the title race to be decided on the final matchday on Thursday.
It was a frustrating night for the home side. Al-Nassr created multiple openings in the first half but Osaka took the lead in the 30th minute. Hammat turned and fired a low shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area. After a lengthy VAR check for offside, the goal stood.
“I am happy to score and help the team and to do my best for this club,” said Hammat, who went off injured at halftime. “I was nervous watching in the second half but the most important thing is that we won and I am proud of my teammates. Now it is time to celebrate and enjoy.”
Osaka defended in numbers and with discipline, making it difficult for Al-Nassr’s star-studded attack to create clear chances.
Ronaldo, who joined the club in December 2022, came close to equalizing just before halftime but his close-range header from a Joao Felix cross sailed wide. Felix, who signed from Chelsea in July, went even closer with 13 minutes remaining, striking the post with a low shot from outside the area.
Despite the double disappointment this week, Al-Nassr can still clinch the Saudi Pro League. It leads Al-Hilal by two points heading into the final game against Damac on Thursday.

Fernandes equals all-time EPL assist record In United’s win over Forest | Football News
Bruno Fernandes has matched the Premier League record for most assists in a single season after registering his 20th assist during Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The milestone moment came in the 76th minute when Fernandes delivered a dangerous ball across the penalty area that was converted by Bryan Mbeumo. The assist brought the United captain level with the long-standing Premier League benchmark.
Level With Premier League Greats
Fernandes now shares the single-season assist record with Thierry Henry, who achieved the feat for Arsenal during the 2002-03 season, and Kevin De Bruyne, who matched it for Manchester City in 2019-20.
The Portuguese midfielder had opportunities to move clear of the record late in the match, but Manchester United were denied by the woodwork and some desperate defending from Forest.
Interestingly, set-pieces have played a major role in Fernandes’ assist tally this season. Half of his 20 assists have come from dead-ball situations, unlike Henry and De Bruyne, who produced most of their assists from open play.

Fernandes Reflects On The Achievement
Speaking after the game, Fernandes admitted he was aware of the significance of the record but insisted the team result mattered more.
The 31-year-old joked that his teammates were eager to score from his passes once they realised he was close to history. He also admitted there were moments during the game when he perhaps should have passed rather than attempted shots himself.
A Remarkable Season For Fernandes
The assist record is another major achievement in what has been an outstanding campaign individually for Fernandes. Earlier this season, he was named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, narrowly beating Declan Rice to the award.
Fernandes secured 45 percent of the media vote and became the first Manchester United player since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to receive the honour.
With one league game remaining against Brighton & Hove Albion, Fernandes still has the chance to break the all-time Premier League assist record outright.

Third Year Viking Predicted for a Breakout
It’s the time of year to be predicting which players are going to rise to stardom in 2026. Pro Football Focus put out their All-Breakout team for 2026, and there was room in their ranks for one Viking.
The man to get the shout-out from PFF is outside linebacker Dallas Turner. Way back in January, PFF already singled out Turner as the most likely breakout candidate in Minnesota this year.
Why PFF Believes Turner Is Ready for More Responsibility
They doubled down on their prediction by naming this all-breakout team, which considers all 32 teams across the league.
Following the exit of Jonathan Greenard, who was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Turner’s situation has improved greatly, as have his chances of a breakout season. With Andrew Van Ginkel more of a “do it all” type of player, Turner is well-positioned to be the Vikings’ number one pass rusher. Of course, he must make the most of this opportunity.
Turner Makes PFF’s All-Breakout Team
PFF is looking for young names who are looking to establish themselves in the league and are formerly unproven talents that can make a leap to stardom this year. They believe Turner fits the bill, and that makes sense. He showed improvement over his rookie year and now has a clear path to a starting role and plenty of opportunities to be on the field. Here is what PFF said about their selection of Turner.
Turner’s first two seasons with the Vikings haven’t seen him become an outward star. That could look different in 2026.
The former 17th overall pick finished with 65.5 and 64.1 overall PFF grades in 2025 and 2024, respectively. But last year was a step in the right direction, as Turner accrued a 70.2 PFF pass-rush grade with 42 pressures and a 12.0% pass-rush win rate.
With Jonathan Greenard now on the Eagles, Turner has a clear runway to both meaningful playing time and improved production for Minnesota.
In terms of stats, Turner had 8 sacks last season, up from 3 in the previous year. His tackles also rose from 20 to 66, tackles for loss from 3 to 11, and passes defended from 3 to 11. Minnesota will be hoping those numbers continue to trend upwards after trading away its star pass rusher.
Both Greenard and Van Ginkel spent time sidelined with injuries last year, which led to Turner getting increased opportunity. He obviously did enough in those moments to convince the decision makers in Minnesota that he can step up and lead the Vikings’ pass rush on the edge.
Selected with the 17th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Turner has always had big expectations on his shoulders. Perhaps it is even more the case in 2026, as the time is now for him to come of age and become the caliber of player expected from a first-round draft pick. Everyone is waiting for him to deliver; it’s now up to him.

Virat Kohli’s Tactic Masterclass Leads To Wicket For RCB Against Punjab Kings. Reaction Says It All – Watch
Virat Kohli celebrates a dismissal during IPL 2026© AFP
Royal Challengers Bengaluru star batter Virat Kohli was left thrilled after Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Priyansh Arya during the IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings on Sunday. The dismissal came just after Kohli gave a specific advice to Bhuvneshwar about bowling the delivery close to Arya’s body. In the first over of the PBKS run chase, Bhuvneshwar bowled a back-of-the-length ball that Arya failed to connect properly and the batter ended up giving a straight catch to Romario Shepherd at mid-wicket. Kohli was excited after the dismissal and he celebrated it with a fist pump and hugged the bowler.

Coming to the match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru rode on fluent half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer, along with a decisive opening spell from pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, to thrash Punjab Kings by 23 runs and seal a playoff berth.
Kohli (58 off 37 balls), Iyer (73 not out off 40 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (45) produced impactful knocks as RCB piled up 222 for 4 in 20 overs.
Bhuvneshwar (2/38) then removed the dangerous Punjab Kings opening pair of Priyansh Arya (0) and Prabhsimran Singh (2) early to all but shut the door on the opposition, who eventually managed 199 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Pacer Rasikh Salam (3/36) compounded Punjab Kings’ misery by dismissing skipper Shreyas Iyer (1) in the fourth over as the hosts slumped to 19 for 3.
Late-order batters Shashank Singh (56 off 27 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (37 off 25 balls) attempted to revive the innings with a counter-attacking effort, but the towering RCB total ultimately proved far beyond PBKS’ reach.
Earlier, Kohli stitched together a 76-run stand with Devdutt for the second wicket to lay the foundation before adding another 60 runs with Venkatesh for the third wicket as table-toppers RCB delivered yet another authoritative batting display.

Oscar De La Hoya sums up Canelo’s comeback fight against Christian Mbilli
Oscar De La Hoya has weighed in on Canelo Alvarez’s clash with Christian Mbilli, questioning the Mexican’s ambition as he inches closer towards retirement.
The 35-year-old has not fought since losing his four world titles to Terence Crawford, whose unanimous decision victory saw him become a three-weight undisputed champion in September.
With Crawford having subsequently retired and vacated all four super-middleweight belts, though, Canelo is now set to face WBC champion Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The pair are scheduled to square off this September, with Alvarez bidding to prove that he remains capable of competing at the top level.
Mbilli, on the other hand, looks to cement himself as the flagship operator at 168lbs after being elevated from ‘interim’ to full WBC champion.
Like Canelo, the Frenchman has not fought since last September, when he boxed to a 10-round draw with unbeaten contender Lester Martinez.
It could therefore be said that Mbilli’s world-class credentials remain somewhat questionable, at least in the eyes of former Canelo promoter De La Hoya.
Speaking with Fight Hub TV, the Golden Boy boss revealed that he does not rate Mbilli as an Alvarez opponent, nor does he see it being a particularly successful event in Riyadh.
“Mbilli, come on. I just don’t like the fight, especially if it’s not going to be here in the US. Again, we have to watch a fight at 9am? I’m just not a fan of that.
“I would’ve loved Canelo to fight here in Vegas in September, with all his fans cheering him on. That’s what fight fans wanna experience – big events.
“Every fighter has his peak and then you start to see the exit coming. [Canelo’s] a few fights away from retirement, so I don’t blame him for taking the money and running. But I do feel that he has a few good fights left in him against great fighters. Not Mbilli.”
With Canelo and De La Hoya rarely seeing eye to eye, it is perhaps unsurprising that the two-time Hall of Famer is not the biggest endorser of his former client’s next fight.

Bickerstaff says Pistons will learn from blowout loss in Game 7 against Cavaliers
DETROIT — The stunning turnaround season for the Detroit Pistons ended Sunday night with a harsh reminder of how difficult the final step can be.
After winning 60 games and earning the top seed in the Eastern Conference, the Pistons were overwhelmed at home by the Cleveland Cavaliers, who rolled to a 125-94 victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Detroit, which forced the deciding game with a road win Friday night, never found its footing offensively and struggled to match Cleveland’s physicality and pace from the opening tip. The Pistons shot just 35.3 per cent from the floor, were outscored 58-34 in the paint and trailed by as many as 35 points in the second half.
“It sucked,” All-Star Cade Cunningham said. “Being back home, definitely wanted to get this win for the fans. Reminded me of last year, losing on the home court. It’s not a great feeling.
“So I hadn’t been thinking about the offseason, so my mind’s been racing now, trying to figure out what I got to do, what it’s going to look like.”
The abrupt ending came just two years after Detroit endured one of the worst seasons in NBA history. The Pistons finished 14-68 during the 2023-24 season and set an NBA single-season record with 28 consecutive losses before emerging this year as one of the league’s biggest surprises under coach J.B. Bickerstaff.
Despite the lopsided defeat, Bickerstaff refused to call the ending a disappointment.
“It’s not a disappointment at all,” Bickerstaff said. “Not ever will I be disappointed in these guys. These guys every single day give us what they got. So it is not a disappointment. It’s a loss, and it’s a tough loss. But that adjective will never be used.”
Bickerstaff repeatedly praised the growth and resilience of a roster that rapidly developed into a contender.
“This team is awesome, and they’re a special group of guys,” he said. “I couldn’t be more appreciative of how they allow us to coach them, work with them every single day. The spirit they carry, their willingness to grow, their willingness to sacrifice. It’s a special group.”
Ausar Thompson said the loss will fuel the Pistons moving forward.
“We have to get better as a team, but I’m focused on what I can do to not be in this situation again,” Thompson said. “It sucks, but you can’t take it back. We already lost.”
Cleveland controlled the game almost immediately.
The Cavaliers turned Detroit’s cold shooting into transition opportunities while building a 31-22 lead after one quarter. After the Pistons scored the first two baskets of the second, Cleveland answered with a 24-9 run to take command and carried a 64-47 advantage into halftime.
Detroit pulled within 17 in the third quarter before Cleveland buried any comeback hopes behind a dominant stretch from Donovan Mitchell, who scored 15 of his 26 points in the period.
Jarrett Allen and Sam Merrill each added 23 points for the Cavaliers, while Evan Mobley finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds as Cleveland advanced to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018.
“They had X-factor guys that had the ability to contribute,” Bickerstaff said. “We knew it was going to be a tough series and a tough test for us, but just like we did last year, we’ll learn from it. We’ll put it in our pocket, we’ll get better from it, and next year we’ll grow and be a better team.”
