Star Trek’s Worst Sequel Is Better Than You Remember
By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

When my students learn that I’m an entertainment writer, they always want to talk about their favorite movies and TV shows. Earlier this year, I talked to a student who had recently seen Scream 7 and was eager to know what score I gave it in my review. When I told him three stars, he asked, with perfect comic timing, “out of five?!?” I had to explain to him that I grade movies the same way I grade research papers. While a three-star review might not sound so bad, it translates to a 60, meaning that I thought the movie barely got a passing grade.
I was thinking about my method of scoring movies while rewatching 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness (now streaming for free on Tubi). As a remake of The Wrath of Khan, it’s absolutely awful, and as a sequel to 2009’s Star Trek, it’s not much better because it retreads the lazy “supervillain with a nearly-unstoppable ship” gimmick. But if you examine the movie on its own quirky merits, you’ll find a surprising amount to love. Now that Paramount has finally killed the Kelvinverse in favor of boldly going in a new direction, it’s the perfect time to revisit a sequel that is far better than you probably remember.
Ripping Off The Band-Aid

Before I get into what Star Trek Into Darkness did right, let’s dive into what you’ve probably been screaming at me about for the last minute or so: what it did wrong. First, reusing Khan as a villain was just wildly lazy, forcing audiences to compare this movie to The Wrath of Khan. Into Darkness suffers from this comparison in a big way. It’s also awkward to replace Ricardo Montalban with lily-white Benedict Cumberbatch. Not only is the race-swapping offensive on the face of it, but the big reveal that this is Khan means nothing to the characters, who had never even met the guy in this universe before.
Like Star Trek (2009), Into Darkness focuses too much on action and not enough on exploring strange new worlds. It relies on some major plot contrivances, like the universe-breaking revelation that Khan’s blood can bring people back to life. Speaking of Khan, the whole plot about his people secretly being put inside proton torpedo tubes never made any sense. The plot in general is fairly slipshod, and the fact that the climax involves the man who shuns emotions screaming and beating someone is downright embarrassing.
Now, stand down from red alert, haters, and we can dive into your favorite subject: why this Star Trek sequel is much better than you remember.
The Killer Cast

Call me a fanboy if you must, but I feel like the Kelvinverse Star Trek films were perfectly cast. Instead of going for physical resemblance, the casting director found talents who matched the vibe of The Original Series actors. Chris Pine oozes with the cocky self-assurance of William Shatner’s Kirk, while Zachary Quinto channels the broody intensity of Leonard Nimoy’s Spock. Karl Urban, meanwhile, practically disappears into the role of Dr. McCoy, echoing the performance of DeForest Kelley so weird that it’s almost creepy. In Into Darkness, everyone is more charismatic than ever, and watching these highly skilled officers do their thing is chicken soup for the sci-fi lover’s soul.
The Kelvinverse movies weren’t perfect, and Into Darkness may be particularly flawed. But these movies expertly matched energy with the TV shows that had come before, casting actors who perfectly bounced off each other’s manic energy and gelled as a believable crew. Again, that easygoing chemistry is even more present in Into Darkness than Star Trek. Character relationships (especially between Kirk and Spock) are deeper, and explosive personalities have (fittingly enough) been cooled down by the vacuum of space. Basically, if you watch the franchise to see hyper-capable geniuses tackle impossible problems, you’ll love how Star Trek Into Darkness plays out.
Lore And World-Building

One of the most interesting parts of Star Trek Into Darkness is how it builds off existing lore while doing some truly wild worldbuilding. For example, the film merges together some very beloved lore (about Khan and his people surviving into the future in stasis pods) with some very hated lore (Section 31 being a rogue, amoral agency at the heart of Starfleet). In this changed timeline, Section 31 finds and weaponizes Khan and his genetically augmented army. Now, how they go about this is almost mind-bogglingly dumb, but seeing Section 31 use Khan is like watching a “What If” Deep Space Nine episode.
It’s also interesting that Carol Marcus’ dad worked for Section 31. Does this mean that in the prime universe, David Marcus’ grandfather is a secret Starfleet war criminal? Additionally, it’s kind of fascinating to think about the sheer number of resources and other assets that have been diverted so that Admiral Marcus could build a killer dreadnaught on the down low. Is it a permanent side effect of Nero’s multiple attacks on Starfleet that this organization has become paranoid and warlike? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, if you like to ponder weird Star Trek lore, Into Darkness is likely to give your brain a tingle.
The Action’s Pretty Solid

Many critics of Star Trek Into Darkness have dismissed it as a dumb action movie. Now, is it dumb? Of course. And is it an action movie? Sure. But what doesn’t get enough attention is that the action in this movie is done surprisingly well. For example, the early scenes of Kirk violating the Prime Directive are pretty silly, but the frenzied action feels like a pleasant crossover between Star Trek and Indiana Jones. Later, scenes of Khan’s terrifyingly efficient fighting help underscore how he once terrified the entire Earth. Arguably, he (and, by extension, his Augments) have never been scarier.
The space suit scene is full of thrills, and watching Kirk narrowly make it aboard the other ship always gives me chills. The fight between the USS Enterprise and the much larger USS Vengeance will keep you on the edge of your seat, all while pushing our crew to the limits. Plus, from MacGyver-ing up some IEDs to going full action hero ‘roid rage, the Spock of this movie is unlike any version we have seen before or since. The action is breathless and unpredictable. For better or for worse, you never know what this movie will do from scene to scene, and there’s a certain lunatic thrill in following a plot just daring you to piece it together.
Stream Me Up, Scotty

Have I convinced you that it’s time to give Star Trek Into Darkness another shot? Or maybe you want to hate-watch the whole thing again so you can tear me a new one in the comments? Either way, you’re in luck. Star Trek’s most hated sequel is now streaming for free on Tubi. If nothing else, it’s worth watching this movie as a genre version of Celebrity Death Match: “Who will win in a fight between Captain Kirk, Sherlock Holmes, and RoboCop?” You’ll have to watch to find out!
A stupid, guilty pleasure? Absolutely. But is it dumb fun from beginning to end? That’s a Texas-sized 10-4, space buddy!

The family later discovered that one family member, Christopher Peden, was missing. When he was located by officers from the Fort Wayne Police Department, he claimed that he had been stabbed downtown, according to WPTA.

NYPD Rescues Woman From Jumping Off The Brooklyn Bridge
The NYPD is being praised for rescuing a woman from jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday, July 8. The woman was reportedly suffering from a crisis, and NYPD officers begged her not to jump. Dramatic footage of the rescue, showing an officer pulling her to safety, has since gone viral.

NYPD Rescues Woman From The Brooklyn Bridge
According to the NYPD, an emergency crew responded to reports of a woman in distress just after 7:30 p.m.
Body-cam footage captured a woman sitting on the bridge ledge. The footage may be disturbing for some viewers.
As an NYPD officer suspended by a cable approached the woman on the bridge, he spoke to her, offering help.
“My name is Chris. What’s your name?” he said to the woman. “What’s happening today? I just want to talk. I want to help you. That’s why I’m up here right now. I genuinely care. I do.”
The officer also begged the woman not to jump off the bridge and to accept his help.
”It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” he added. “It really is. I don’t know what you’re going through, but I want to understand. We have services we can get you to. The strongest thing you can do right now is accept help. I promise you, that’s the strongest thing you can do.”
NYPD Officer Talked To The Woman For One Hour Before the Rescue
The officer reportedly talked to the woman for almost an hour before the rescue as he waited for a moment to pull her away from the ledge.
“NYPD ESU officers climbed onto the Brooklyn Bridge to reach a woman in crisis who was threatening to jump,” read a statement from Police 1. “For nearly an hour, they stayed with her, spoke with her, and waited for the moment they could safely pull her back from the edge.”
After it got dark, several rescuers made their way to the woman as she clutched onto the bridge with one arm. It appeared as though she was about to let go just as they reached her, and one officer quickly wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her in.
”Don’t do it,” he exclaimed. “Don’t do it, please. I got you. You’re OK. Everything’s going to be OK. You’re not in trouble.”
Text over the body cam footage read, “After nearly an hour of conversation, officers were able to take the person off the bridge.”

Stephen King’s 8-Part Horror Thriller Officially Hits Prime Video in 3 Months
The last few years have been a roller-coaster for Stephen King fans, who have been treated to both beloved and underwhelming adaptations. One of the first retellings of King’s novels that immediately comes to mind is The Running Man, which also served as a remake of the popular 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action film of the same name. Despite the combined star power of Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, and Colman Domingo, The Running Man bombed at the box office before going on to dominate Paramount Plus. However, 2025 did bring on a beloved King adaptation with IT: Welcome to Derry, the HBO Max prequel series that earned solid scores of 80% from critics and 82% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. The first season was so well-received that HBO had no choice but to greenlight another season.
Fans who weren’t happy with the latest Stephen King adaptation usually don’t have to wait long for the next one, and the acclaimed author has officially set a new horror series coming to streaming before the end of this year. Mike Flanagan is adapting King’s Carrie, and while it has not yet received an official release date, it has been confirmed that the show will arrive before the end of this year, with several cast members hinting at October. It will be the first Stephen King original series to stream on Prime Video since Haven, the five-season horror show loosely based on King’s novel, The Colorado Kid. Flanagan has experienced adapting King’s novels, too — just last year he teamed up with Tom Hiddleston for The Life of Chuck, and back in 2019 he guided Rebecca Ferguson to one of her more underrated performances in Doctor Sleep, which is a Shining sequel.
Who Stars in ‘Carrie’?
The two biggest, eye-popping names that stand out on the Carrie call sheet are Matthew Lillard and Amber Midthunder. Lillard is a horror icon best known for his work in the Scream franchise, and Midthunder broke out a few years ago with her blockbuster performance in Prey. Heather Graham and Katee Sackhoff will also have key roles in Carrie. An official synopsis for the Carrie novel, which was published in 1974, reads as follows:
“Carrie White is a shy, bullied teenager tormented by classmates and controlled by her fanatically religious mother. When a cruel prank at her senior prom pushes her past the breaking point, Carrie unleashes a terrifying telekinetic power she can no longer control. What begins as an act of humiliation ignites a night of catastrophic, unstoppable revenge.”
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Carrie, which is coming to Prime Video before the close of 2026.

Tyler Perry Covers Nolan Xavier Wells’ Funeral Costs
According to Ben Crump, Tyler Perry covered the full cost of Wells’ funeral, offering financial support as the family navigates an unimaginable loss. During a Friday press conference, Crump publicly thanked Perry for stepping in, saying the filmmaker made sure the family didn’t have to carry the burden of funeral expenses while they continue seeking answers. Perry has not publicly commented on the situation, but the gesture has drawn attention as the Wells family pushes for transparency in the investigation surrounding the 18-year-old’s death.

Crump also shared that the family requested an independent autopsy because they do not have confidence in the official investigation being conducted by Mississippi authorities. While Colin Kaepernick helped pay for the independent autopsy, Crump emphasized Perry’s role in helping the family through one of the most difficult moments by covering the funeral costs. Xavier Nolan Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island after traveling there with a group of friends from a private dock in Ocean Springs.

Speaking during Friday’s press conference, Wonsley revealed that before leaving to spend the night with one of the friends who later joined him on the Fourth of July boating trip, Nolan made her dinner and told her, “Hey mom, I’m about to go, love you,” before giving her a hug and kiss. Authorities recovered the 18-year-old’s body from the waters near Horn Island just days later. His family continues to mourn while seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Mikayla Matthews Blasts Taylor Frankie Paul
Mikayla Matthews isn’t backing down from Taylor Frankie Paul ahead of season 5 of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.” In a new social media post, Matthews, 26, replied to Paul’s earlier post, in which she seemed to hint that she was the sole reason her co-stars had been rewarded with additional opportunities, such as “Dancing with the Stars” and Broadway shows. Matthews claimed that Paul’s need to remind people she’s the star of the popular Hulu series stems more from her insecurities than anything else.
Matthews rushed to Instagram on Thursday, July 9, to share her thoughts on Paul’s recent post, which seemed to call out her co-stars.
“It’s honestly crazy that we’re even arguing about who created what or who’s more relevant. This show was pitched to us, by the way (me, Mayci, Whitney, and Taylor, about stay-at-home moms providing for their families and, of course, ‘MomTok,’ which we all know was started by Miranda, Camille, AND Taylor,” Matthews wrote.
According to the mother of four, “SLOMW” was pitched to them because of Paul’s swinging scandal, and she said that they’ve all been offered amazing opportunities as a result. However, she said that each cast member has worked hard to secure their own since the show’s start.
Matthews Hints That Taylor Frankie Paul May Be Obsessed With Being In Control More Than Anything Else

Over the last several months, Paul has been in explosive back-and-forth feuds with her co-stars. It all began when Hulu shut down production on season 5 of “SLOMW” due to Paul’s domestic violence cases with her ex, Dakota Mortensen.
During those fights, Paul has also shared her feelings about her castmates, implying that they were jealous of her success. She’s also claimed to air out their dirty laundry—something Matthews doesn’t appreciate.
“Constantly reposting things and repeatedly pushing the narrative of, ‘I’m the reason you have this, you only got it cause I turned it down, I’m a star and you’re not as interesting. Don’t forget it,’ seems like weaponizing and manipulating your following to keep yourself in that power position to intimidate the people around you over and over,” she wrote.
Matthews’ post was a direct response to Paul’s recent post calling out her co-stars. On Wednesday, July 8, Whitney Leavitt shared a video of the current “SLOMW” cast members, Miranda Hope, Jessi Draper, Jen Affleck, Mayci Neely, Layla Taylor, and Matthews, celebrating the end of filming season 5.
“We’re surviving,” the video said, which many believe to be a play on the show’s tagline, “Will MomTok survive this?”
Paul clapped back, “Looks like thriving to me, I’ll show you surviving.” She then shared an Instagram reel of herself dancing to Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” and included screenshots of messages she’s received about taking part in major opportunities, such as “DWTS” and writing a book.
Matthews And Paul Clashed Earlier This Year

Matthew’s latest post comes months after the pair clashed over social media comments earlier this year. According to a previous report from The Blast, Paul took issue with Matthews saying she wanted to be “as removed as possible” from her and Mortensen during the height of their legal woes.
“I STILL have ‘friends’ kicking me while I’m already down and calling it ‘setting a boundary’ and then BLAMES ME for being upset and responding. That’s called shaming and attack while I had a moment to breathe and she knew that,” Paul replied. “What a snake friend just did to me in the public eye after everything she just witnessed…the lack of empathy and silence was loud enough.”
In June 2026, Matthews spoke with reporters about where she stood with Paul, revealing they were in a “good” place. While Matthews revealed there was still more she wanted to say, she said she felt she shared the most important messages at the time.
“This is what I need to do to protect myself and my relationships and my mental health,” she said.
Paul Will Be Featured In Season 5 Of ‘SLOMW,’ But Not How People May Expect

Season 5 of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” will return to Hulu later this year; however, a source told PEOPLE that it’s likely Paul won’t be featured as much as the other women. During the height of her legal woes, a majority of the cast refused to film with her, causing a major production roadblock.
Paul will reportedly appear in the first half of the season’s episodes, but she will not film confessionals for the upcoming season. She will also be included in the season’s opener, but it’s very likely that she’ll shoot her segment separately from the other women.

Horror Mystery Thriller With An All-Star Cast Will Disturb Everyone
By Robert Scucci
| Published

I’ve never been a fan of the whole Airbnb thing. If I’m throwing down my hard-earned cash to go on vacation, I don’t want to be up-charged by some overbearing property owner because they didn’t like how I touched the thermostat. I’ve also heard a bunch of horror stories from my friends about how they thought they were being recorded with a hidden camera while trying to have an unforgettable weekend. The Rental takes the idea of an overbearing property owner and makes it so believable that you’ll probably start booking hotel rooms again instead of looking for a remote cabin in the middle of nowhere.
Next Time, Just Book A Hotel

The Rental starts out like your typical “cabin in the woods” kind of horror flick but attempts to offer so much more because its tension doesn’t just come from some unknown outside source of terror but also the pair of couples (and their dog) who party just a little too hard during their stay.
When husband and wife, Charlie (Dan Stevens) and Michelle (Alison Brie), decide to bring Charlie’s brother, Josh (Jeremy Allen White), and his girlfriend, Mina (Sheila Vand), along for a weekend getaway, they’re immediately rubbed the wrong way by Taylor (Toby Huss), the property owner.

Taylor is one of those suspicious property owners who show up at inopportune moments, suggesting he’s keeping a close eye on his tenants during their weekend stay. Mina has reason to believe that Taylor will be an unwelcome presence because he enters the rental property to deliver a telescope so they can look at the stars while the group isn’t present.
Getaway Turned Nightmare
After partying while indulging in a healthy amount of recreational drugs, Charlie and Mina have a romantic rendezvous in the shower, which they immediately regret. The next morning, after swearing they’ll never engage in such an unfaithful activity again, we learn what’s truly at stake in The Rental. Mina discovers that there are cameras hidden in the shower heads, and Charlie decides that it’s best if they find and destroy the footage before Michelle and Josh find out.

Josh, on the other hand, is distracted because his dog, Reggie, goes missing on the second day. Josh, who is so hotheaded that he was once in prison for his violent tendencies, plans to confront Taylor because the rental property has a strict no pet policy, and he suspects foul play. Mina also has her own plans to confront Taylor about the cameras, which results in a violent altercation between Taylor and Josh, who is unaware of Mina’s one-night stand with Charlie.
A Must-Watch For Fans Of The Bear
The Rental is an effective horror thriller that will make you think twice about whether booking a place with a hot tub for a weekend getaway is a good idea. If you’re a fan of The Bear, you’ll appreciate Jeremy Allen White’s ability to convincingly portray a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown when tensions run high. Though he later masters the craft of epically melting down in the award-winning FX on Hulu series, his innate ability to convey such raw emotions at the drop of a hat is evident in this film.

But still, The Rental is a film that somehow doesn’t feel whole when you sum up all of the parts that should, in theory, make this an excellent film. While there is a considerable amount of tension throughout its tight 88-minute runtime, I felt like writer and director Dave Franco had the intention of starting a new franchise without first seeing if his directorial debut was a suitable proof of concept in the first place. Given how open-ended the film’s conclusion is, I smell a sequel in the works, but nothing has been officially announced as of yet.
That is to say, if The Rental turns out to be a stand-alone film, you may find yourself wishing there was a little more to it than what it ultimately offers.

Despite its shortcomings, The Rental is well-acted and has great production values. It’s just not enough to make it the memorable film that I wanted it to be. If a potential sequel picks up where it left off, I may have to reassess my feelings, but for now, I’m left wondering how much better this movie could have been if it fully explored its setting and characters.

As of this writing, The Rental is streaming on Hulu.
