Echo Comment: Should pubs open and kids stay up for England’s match?

Echo Comment: Should pubs open and kids stay up for England's match?

It is good for publicans and it is good for the country that people should be encouraged to come together to wave the flag in a show of non-political unity

It may be a headache for police, but they should be able to respond to the wishes of the general public who pay their wages and only rarely get occasions to let their hair down.

Equally, the public should respond sensibly and respectfully to what could be a great and memorable occasion – the true tragedy of revelry is that sporting defeats coupled with excess alcohol lead to a rise in domestic violence and that can never be excused.

The other big question is should the kids be allowed to stay up and watch a match which may drag on to 4am?

School is important, even as term nears its end, and no child should miss lessons.

It is great to see innovative schools coming up with imaginative solutions, like showing the match in full before the first school bell.

We tend to agree with England’s German manager, Thomas Tuchel, when he said: “There’s so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years – let them watch.”

One Durham school has told its pupils that this is a lesson in resilience – you may stay up late but you must be at your desk and you must find a way to do your work.

And that is the adult world. It is full of awkward choices and compromises, of finding ways to get things done, of pushing through until the work is done.

Judging by the frustrating way the team have been playing of late, you are going to need every ounce of resilience to watch this match through to the final whistle. C’mon, England!

Prepare for DRAMA: All of the celebrity exes forced to reunite at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding celebration

Published

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are gearing up for their wedding celebration today at Madison Square Garden, and the extravagant event is expected to see roughly 1,000 of their famous friends come together to commemorate their love

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are gearing up for day two of their wedding celebration at Madison Square Garden, and the extravagant event is expected to see roughly 1,000 of their famous friends come together to commemorate their love.

Hollywood royalty, sports stars, actors and singers have all descended upon New York City for the star-studded event.

But it appears there may be some tension during the dazzling celebration, as a ton of celebrity exes will be forced to reunite.

Between Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham, Suki Waterhouse and Bradley Cooper and Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding, there could be some very awkward run-ins at the wedding celebration.

Swift’s longtime music collaborator Antonoff and her close friend Dunham were both spotted arriving separately at Madison Square Garden on the first day of Swift’s wedding parties, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be at the party this evening.

The two dated for five years from 2012 to 2018, and Dunham later confessed to cheating on the producer in her memoir Famesick.

Waterhouse and Cooper are both confirmed to be attending the wedding celebration; they were together from 2013 to 2015.

Cooper has since moved on with Gigi Hadid, one of Swift’s oldest friends, which is how he scored an invite to the coveted event.

Hadid may also have to see one of her exes at the party: Zayn Malik. It’s unclear whether or not the One Direction singer will go to the wedding celebration, however, he and Swift famously released a song together in 2017, called I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.

Both Goulding and Sheeran were spotted in New York this week, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be there.

The exes have both been a part of the Cruel Summer songstress’ inner circle for years, so it comes as no surprise.

They were briefly rumored to be in a relationship back in 2013, and were spotted holding hands at the MTV Video Music Awards.

It’s heavily believed by fans that Sheeran’s song Don’t was written about Goulding leaving him for Niall Horan, however, Goulding has denied this.

‘I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed,’ she told Elle UK in 2025.

‘I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing.’

Both Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello may have to see their ex Shawn Mendes at the wedding celebration.

But it appears there may be some tension during the dazzling celebration, as a ton of celebrity exes will be forced to reunite, including Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham, who dated for five years from 2012 to 2018 (seen together in 2014)

The three were embroiled in an infamous rumored love triangle back in 2023.

Mendes and Carpenter were seen spending a lot of time together in February of that year, however, the singer denied at the time that they were a couple.

Months later, Mendes was spotted kissing his ex Cabello at Coachella.

Many fans believe Carpenter went on to write her song Taste about the situation, in which she sings: ‘I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.’

It’s unconfirmed if Mendes is attending Swift’s wedding celebration, however, he and the pop star have a long friendship; he opened for her on her 1989 World Tour and the two collaborated on a reimagined version of her song Lover in 2019.

If Swift’s pal Phoebe Bridgers – who previously released a song with the bride, called Nothing New – attends, she will risk crossing paths with her ex Paul Mescal.

Mescal is currently dating another one of Swift’s close friends, Gracie Abrams, so it’s likely he’ll be at the wedding celebration.

Selena Gomez – who is confirmed to be attending – might have to take a walk down memory lane if Swift’s pal Taylor Lautner shows up.

Swift and Lautner briefly dated in 2009 and lost touch afterwards, but reconnected and rekindled their friendship in 2023.

The singer even invited the Twilight star on stage during her Eras Tour and featured him in the music video for her song I Can See You later that year.

He and Gomez briefly dated in 2009, before he started his relationship with Swift.

Swift and Kelce partied late into the night on Thursday for what was believed to be a rehearsal dinner with 100 of their closest friends, including Hadid, Cooper, Gomez, Antonoff and Dunham, among others.

There are conflicting reports about whether Swift and Kelce have already married, but there are plans for an enormous party with 1,000 guests at Madison Square Garden today.

Northern Ireland weather outlook for first weekend of July

Published

on

Belfast Live

It comes after a record breaking month of June on the weather front thanks to the recent heatwave

It’s the first weekend of July after a record breaking month of June on the weather front as the recent heatwave brought a run of sweltering days and balmy nights.

A punishing heatwave affected many parts of the country during the last week of the month, with temperatures topping 30C somewhere in the UK for seven days in a row from June 21-27.

Northern Ireland and Scotland both saw their joint fourth warmest June.

The mean temperature across the UK was 15.6C, ranking behind only 15.8C in 2023, according to figures published by the Met Office.

The exceptionally hot and humid conditions in the last week of the month led the Met Office to issue a rare red warning for extreme heat for much of southern England and south-east Wales.

The warning ran for three consecutive days – the longest period of time such an alert has been in place.

Dr Emily Carlisle, of the Met Office, said: “June’s high temperatures are part of a broader pattern of warmth during 2026. So far, five of the first six months of the year have recorded mean temperatures at least 1C above average, with only January seeing below-average temperatures.”

Scientists warned the severity of last month’s heatwave – which affected much of mainland Europe as well as the UK – would have been virtually impossible 50 years ago.

This year is shaping up to be a multiple record-breaker for heat in the UK.

As well as the highest peak June temperature since Met Office data began, 2026 has also seen the highest May temperature on record, with 35.1C measured on May 26 at Kew Gardens in London.

England and Wales both experienced their warmest spring on record in 2026, thanks partly to the heatwave that hit the UK at the end of May.

Sunshine totals in June were above average for the UK, England and Wales, although “not by as much as might be expected” given the intensity of the heat, the Met Office added.

The high humidity “meant skies were often hazier and cloudier than during a less humid heatwave, limiting sunshine totals despite the exceptional temperatures”.

Northern Ireland and Scotland recorded below average sunshine totals.

Despite the exceptional heat, June was wetter than average for the UK and all four nations, due to a series of low-pressure weather systems earlier in the month that brought cloudy and unsettled conditions to many areas.

Here’s what we can expect over the coming days.

Saturday:

A mainly dry and cloudy day with just the odd shower, although these may become more widespread in the west later. Some occasional brightness in the southeast. Maximum temperature 19°C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

A changeable, often cloudy and breezy few days with spells of rain, but some drier and brighter periods too, especially in the east.

UK long range weather forecast: Wednesday 8 July – Friday 17 July

High pressure will dominate across England and Wales into next week, likely extending its influence into the northern UK with time. This will bring dry and warm conditions with plenty of sunshine for much of England and Wales, but there is a chance of thunderstorms at times.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see more cloud at first, with periods of rain at times. Through next week the high pressure may extend northwards to bring periods of drier and warmer weather to most of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Winds will be light to moderate for most, though stronger around northern hills and coasts near low pressure systems. Temperatures becoming widely warm, perhaps locally hot in parts of the southeast, although not as hot nor humid as seen in the past week.

Although the sunny weather took a bit of a back seat this week, we have high hopes that it will join us again this summer.

With the kids off school and the Bank Holiday weekend coming up, you may be hoping to plan a fun day out for the whole family to enjoy.

A new study from The AA has revealed the “best beach in the region” for those packing the bucket and spades into the car this summer.

Their experts analysed average Google review scores, daily car parking costs, lifeguard services, RNLI lifeboat station proximity, average water temperature and monthly hours of sunshine across 228 Blue Flag awarded beaches in the UK and Ireland to find the best of the best.

Data revealed Benone Beach in Co Derry as the top in Northern Ireland for 2026, remarking it for its “golden sand” and proximity to other great beaches and landmarks.

The AA said: “Located on the Causeway Coast, Benone Beach is the best beach in Northern Ireland and ranks 139th out of the 228 beaches scored.

“The location has a magnificent stretch of seven-miles of golden sand for you, family and friends to enjoy.

“If you want to make a day of it, take the six mile walk to Mussenden Temple to do some sightseeing or throw yourself in the deep end with some water sport activities.

“You can even try a seven mile beach crawl – if you keep walking along the unbroken coastline you can also visit Downhill and Magilligan beaches.”

Muslim boys ‘racially abused and chased through street’ in Glasgow

Published

on

Daily Record

Police are treating the incident in Pollokshields as a hate crime.

A group of young Muslim boys were allegedly chased in Glasgow by a man who shouted racist abuse, including telling them to “go back to your own country.”

The incident is said to have happened on Kenmure Street in Pollokshields at around 7.25pm on Thursday, July 2.

Police Scotland confirmed officers were called to reports of a man causing a disturbance and said enquiries are ongoing. The incident is being treated as a hate crime, Glasgow Live reports.

The allegations have sparked concern among local residents, with community activist Tabassum Niamat warning of growing fears among minority communities in Glasgow.

The incident comes just days after figures revealed a 17 per cent rise in charges relating to race hate crime across Scotland.

Tabassum, who played a leading role during the Kenmure Street immigration protest in 2021, said: “The rise of hate crimes, and the discriminatory language that has become normalised, due to careless politicians who have made minorities and Muslims scapegoats, has led to people like us having to look over our shoulder.

“There is a real fear that the most vulnerable in our communities will get hurt, and that we are heading towards the same conditions that swept across Europe 100 years ago. Fascism is here.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

In a video shared on social media, she alleged a man chased the boys while they were riding their bikes and directed racist abuse towards them before targeting a group of young girls.

She said: “A white Scottish man started chasing the boys on their bikes, hurling abuse, swearing at them and then the young girls followed on by trying to get into the Bowling Green and swearing at the bajis (sisters). They shouted, ‘Go back to your own country, you don’t belong here.’

“This is our neighbourhood, this is where we live. Pollokshields is our home. We’re not going to have anyone tell us to go back to our own country. This is our country. What I need for people to do is really take this seriously.”

In response to the incident, Tabassum said she has launched a Pollokshields Watch group to help support local residents.

She added: “We’re not being vigilantes here. We’re not doing the police’s work for them. But what we are going to do is protect our neighbours.

“We’re going to make sure that no child is being unnecessarily harassed and no elderly lady or man is going to be threatened. Please be careful… look after those who are vulnerable in your communities. This is just not on.

“It’s unprecedented, this level of hatred towards minorities and Muslims. It just sickens me to my stomach.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.25pm on Thursday, 2 July, 2026, we received a report of a man causing a disturbance in the Kenmure Street area of Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Euromillions and Thunderball numbers and results for Friday, July 3

Published

on

Wales Online

A whopping £69m is up for grabs in tonight’s Euromillions draw. The Euromillions draw takes place every Tuesday and Friday, with tickets priced at £2.50. This includes automatic entry into the UK Millionaire Maker draw, which creates new UK millionaires every week.

The maximum jackpot can climb to €190m (roughly £167m).

The Thunderball game also takes place this evening at 8pm. The winner of this draw pockets £500,000 if they match five numbers along with the crucial Thunderball number.

How many numbers do you need to win?

Those who have got two numbers or one number and two lucky stars or better, are the winner. Players must match all five main numbers and two lucky star numbers to claim the jackpot.

In May 2022 Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, became the UK’s biggest-ever Euromillions winners after netting £184m with a lucky dip ticket. Their record did not last long, though, after another UK winner came forward in July 2022 to claim a jackpot of £195m.

However they have not gone public. Prior to Mr and Mrs Thwaite’s win the previous record was held by an anonymous winner who scooped £170m in October 2019. On June 4, 2021, a ticketholder in the UK scooped the £111m jackpot in the Friday-night draw, matching all seven numbers to become the country’s ninth-biggest lottery winner ever at that stage.

In June 2019 a single ticketholder in the UK won £123m in the Tuesday night Euromillions draw. It was the third-biggest Euromillions jackpot in the UK since the draw launched in 2004. It meant they instantly became as rich as Fifty Shades of Grey author E. L. James (£127m) and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page (£125m).

June 2023 was a lucrative month for UK players with a ticketholder bagging a £117.1m jackpot on June 2 while another winner scooped the £55m jackpot on June 20. Euromillions is played in nine European countries.

The live winning numbers for both draws will be published below:
