10 Greatest Fantasy TV Masterpieces of the 21st Century, Ranked

Published

on

The 21st century has seen a lot of new fantasy TV shows come out, largely due to the rapid advancement of filming technology. Television has come a long way since the 1990s, mainly due to streaming services and on-demand viewing. This new trend means studios earn more money, which means they can dump more of their budget into their original series, giving them higher production value. This opens the doors to tell a whole bunch of new stories that otherwise would be reserved for movies or books.

The result is an uptick in fantasy shows, across all subgenres, from low to high, from urban to dark. They’re becoming pretty popular because fantasy offers a form of escapism, to let people get just a taste of worlds that are so much more interesting than the one we actually live in. Over the last 26 years, a lot of fantasy shows haven’t just impressed people–they’ve established themselves as legendary. These are the best fantasy TV masterpieces of the 21st century.

‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ (2019)

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance served as a prequel to the 1982 Jim Henson film. Like the original, the series takes viewers to the distant planet Thra, a world crafted with intricate puppetry and gorgeous sets. This Netflix original follows the splintering of the Dark Crystal itself, which releases magic and spawns two new races of beings into the world: the Mystics and the Skeksis. The Skeksis quickly begin to use the power of the crystal to take over the native life of Thra and build a tyrannical empire.

While this series was an extension of the story and was absolutely gorgeous to look at, viewers were none too pleased when Netflix unceremoniously cancelled it after just one season. This really sucks, because the show garnered excellent reviews from both critics and fans, who praised the respect it had for Henson’s original work, as well as the detail put into every piece. Even though it was cut short, it’s not a stretch to call it a masterpiece.

Film director Guillermo del Toro is sort of known for his dark fantasy movies, which is why Netflix offered him a miniseries, called Cabinet of Curiosities, which served as del Toro’s own personal playground. The show is an anthology miniseries, meaning each episode has its own plot and characters, with a definitive conclusion. All of the stories are taken straight from del Toro’s “ideas” box, and have the same dark flair that makes his movies so good.

Cabinet of Curiosities explores a variety of themes from fantasy and horror, and it presents them in a way that isn’t just fun to look at, but that will also make the viewer think for a while. Since this is a miniseries, it never got a second season, but that doesn’t change the fact that every single episode of this show is a masterpiece, and thus, so is the show itself.

‘Gravity Falls’ (2012–2016)

Gravity Falls initially seemed like a casual Cartoon Network show, but it has developed quite the cult following in the years since its release. The story follows two kids as they live with their uncle in the town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, which is more than meets the eye. Here, the siblings uncover many supernatural mysteries beyond their understanding. Turns out the Pacific Northwest has a lot of secrets hiding beneath the surface.

This show is unexpectedly deep, delving into themes of philosophy and existentialism through the use of metaphor. It does have its fair share of humour, but most people ended up liking the show for the weaving and intricate narrative it presented, as well as its odd but lovable characters. Gravity Falls remains an underground masterpiece that is still being rediscovered by fans of all ages.

Attack on Titan is a Japanese anime series based on the manga of the same name. The show opens up inside humanity’s last remaining refuge, a massive group of settlements surrounded by towering walls. This is to keep the flesh-eating titans out, which is a system that lasts for about 100 years. One fateful day, though, the titans breach the walls and turn society upside-down, forcing humanity to fight a war for its very survival.

The plot eventually thickens, and more about the outside world is revealed, and it becomes increasingly clear that everything the viewer thought they knew about this dark universe was completely wrong. Attack on Titan is widely regarded as one of the best anime series ever, as well as one of the most accessible and friendly to non-fans of anime. Its dark and dangerous world, so much fun to ease into, and the worldbuilding is just superb.

‘Over the Garden Wall’ (2014)

Image via Cartoon Network

Over the Garden Wall was something of a passion project, and this is made obvious. Every single frame of this animated miniseries is crafted and curated with such love and care that it literally oozes with quality. Accessible to both kids and adults, Over the Garden Wall is about two brothers who get lost in a deep, dark forest called the Unknown, and must find their way home whilst avoiding the mysterious things that lurk within the woods.

The series, like Gravity Falls, is so much deeper than it initially lets on. On top of being chock-full of star power thanks to some big names in the cast, the whimsical cartoon gets pretty dark in a way that few people would expect from it. It is absolutely a masterpiece that 100% earned every single bit of praise it got, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely go and check it out.

Winterfell · The North

🐺 House Stark

Winter is Coming — and you have always known it. You prepare not out of fear but out of duty, because the people who depend on you deserve someone who takes the long view.

  • You lead with honour even when it costs you, because you understand that a reputation built on integrity is the only one worth having.
  • Your loyalty to family and people runs deep — not as sentiment but as a code that doesn’t bend when things get difficult.
  • The North endures because Starks endure — not by being the cleverest players in the game, but by being the kind of people others are willing to follow into the cold.
  • You are that kind of person. The pack survives. The lone wolf dies. You already know which one you are.

Casterly Rock · The Westerlands

🦁 House Lannister

You understand the game — its rules, its exceptions, and exactly when the rules become the exception. You play it without illusions and without apology.

  • You are sharper than most people realise, and you have learned to use that gap to your advantage.
  • A Lannister always pays their debts — and you always keep your word, because your word is an instrument of power, and instruments must be kept in working order.
  • You love your family with a ferocity that sometimes blinds you, and you know it, and you do it anyway.
  • The lion doesn’t concern itself with the opinion of sheep. Neither, in the end, do you.

Dragonstone · The Iron Throne

🐉 House Targaryen

You carry a sense of destiny that is difficult to explain and impossible to ignore — the feeling that you are not simply participating in the world but meant to reshape it.

  • You are capable of extraordinary things, and you know it, and that knowledge is both your greatest strength and your most dangerous quality.
  • Fire and blood are not just words to you — they are a philosophy about what change requires and what it costs.
  • The Targaryens at their best were transformative rulers who broke chains and defied the limits of what anyone thought possible.
  • At your best, so are you. The dragon has three heads. You are one of them.

Storm’s End · The Stormlands

🦌 House Baratheon

You are a force — direct, powerful, and difficult to ignore when you enter a room or a conflict. You do not negotiate with challenges. You meet them.

  • Ours is the fury — and yours is a kind of intensity that commands attention, respect, and occasionally fear from those who underestimate what’s behind it.
  • You value strength and straight dealing. You’d rather know where you stand in a fight than navigate a web of courtly whispers.
  • The Baratheons built their house on the back of one of the greatest military victories in Westerosi history — and then struggled with what came after.
  • The lesson of your house is that winning is not the end of the story. Governing is. You are learning that too.

Highgarden · The Reach

🌹 House Tyrell

You understand that power does not always announce itself — that sometimes it arrives with flowers, good wine, and a smile that doesn’t quite reach the eyes.

  • Growing strong is your house’s motto, and you live it: patiently, strategically, always investing in the relationships and resources that will matter most when it counts.
  • You are charming by choice and calculating by nature — a combination that makes you one of the most effective players in any room you enter.
  • The Tyrells fed King’s Landing and shaped its politics without ever sitting on the Iron Throne — and they were arguably more powerful for it.
  • You know that the person who controls the food controls the kingdom. And you always know where the food is.

Arcane is based on the MOBA video game League of Legends, which has millions of active players. The 3D animated series follows two of the game’s playable champions in a tale of love, vengeance, and sacrifice. Lots of different genres are woven into the story here, from steampunk to fantasy, and even to sci-fi, because that’s just the kind of world that League of Legends has.

This show was so brilliant that it even won an Emmy, which isn’t exactly common for a series based on a video game. With direct involvement from game developers, this show was proof that video game adaptations can be excellent, provided one has the right input and deeply cares about their project. The best part? This show actually had a proper conclusion, deciding that two seasons were all it really needed. It was so enjoyable that it even attracted millions of viewers who had never played League before.

‘Kingdom’ (2019–2021)

Kingdom is a South Korean fantasy/horror series set in the Kingdom of Joseon (present-day Korea) at the turn of the 17th Century. Following the Imjin War with Japan, the Haewon Cho Clan makes an effort to seize the throne from the Lee family. To do this, they utilize a mythical resurrection plant, which is said to bring back the dead. The problem is, they accidentally unleash a zombie horde in the process.

This show has it all: political intrigue, horror, gruesome violence, and epic fight sequences. Yet, it never really got the attention it so rightfully deserved. The worst part about it is that it ended on a cliffhanger. Sure, there has been no official word regarding its cancellation, but after five years, it’s safe to say that it probably isn’t coming back. Either way, though, what’s there is pretty near perfect and is easily a 10/10 by any metric. It’s an underrated masterpiece that you definitely need to check out if you haven’t already.

3

‘House of the Dragon’ (2022–Present)

Alicent looking afraid in the streets of King's Landing in House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon is the long-anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones. Set 300 years before the events of the main series, this show follows the Targaryen family as they conquer the Seven Kingdoms and seek to maintain their rule against opposing factions. True to its name, the show does indeed feature lots of dragons, which, let’s be honest, are always a plus. Dragons are just plain cool, you know?

A lot of this show is about politics, but it also features plenty of action and adventure, especially given the war between the Targaryens and the Hightowers. Not only do they physically fight via swords and spears, but they also make a series of political maneuvers in an effort to tear down their opponents’ reputation. It’s just a fantastic series that has pretty much everything you could ever want from an epic fantasy saga.

2

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ (2005–2008)

Aang in the Avatar state in the finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Image via Nickelodeon
Advertisement

Avatar: The Last Airbender was pretty ambitious for a Nickelodeon cartoon. This one wasn’t a comedy at heart–it had an actual, continuous narrative, meaning you can’t just pick it up and drop it at any point, unlike most other Nicktoons. The story is about a continent consisting of four nations, which each correspond to the elements of water, fire, air, and earth. Within these nations are mages called “benders,” who can manipulate their country’s element to their will.

However, the Fire Nation has launched a massive assault on the other three nations, throwing the continent into chaos. It is said that in these dark times, an Avatar is prophesied to rise, master all four elements, and unite the tribes, bringing peace to the land. This show earned legendary status because not only does it have great comedy and adventure, but there’s a lot of genuine moral wisdom in there, too. While it’s meant for kids, adults tend to like it as well, which goes to show just how masterful the whole thing really is.

1

‘Game of Thrones’ (2011–2019)

A lot of the fantasy TV shows on this list probably wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for Game of Thrones. This show single-handedly kickstarted a massive wave of fantasy television, a trend that is still going on 15 years later. Based on the unfinished novel series by George R. R. Martin, this show is about nine royal families squabbling for the throne of the realm whilst a primordial force of evil is silently gathering strength to the North, which threatens to end the world itself.

The budget in this show is absolutely insane. It’s got massive battle sequences, political drama, steamy romance, abrasive punchlines, and family drama. There’s a little bit of everything for everybody. A lot of people didn’t like the last one or two seasons, which is understandable, but you can’t deny that everything that came before that was absolutely phenomenal. To call this show a masterpiece is honestly kind of selling it short.

Critics Slam Meghan Markle’s Milestone Emmy Nomination

Meghan Markle‘s axed Netflix series is up for an Emmy award, and she couldn’t be prouder.

The Duchess of Sussex marked the nomination with a heartfelt post, crafting the perfect response worthy of her royal status.

Although Meghan Markle was beaming with joy over her show’s achievement, some fans and critics had a different reaction to the news.

After the Daytime Emmy nominations were revealed on Tuesday, July 14, Meghan updated her social media feed the following day with a promotional picture of her lifestyle series. The image captured her outdoors, flashing a radiant smile as she held a bouquet of pink flowers.

The words “Create wonder in every moment,” alongside the series’ name, “With Love, Meghan,” were written across the picture. An excited Meghan reacted to the show’s Emmy nomination in the Instagram post’s caption, celebrating the achievement as a joint effort. In her words:

“A huge congratulations to the amazing crew, producers, and team who worked on ‘With Love, Meghan’ on @netflix. We are nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lifestyle Series!”

Fans Call Out The Former Actress’s Emmy Nomination

The Emmys announced Meghan’s show’s nomination on X, revealing that she was up for the Outstanding Lifestyle Series award alongside four other shows. The nominees were “A Different Breed,” “George to the Rescue,” “The Motherhood,” and “The Wizard of Paws.”

The Duchess’s nomination with these shows did not sit well with fans, with some speculating that she bought her way into the list. Someone claimed Meghan failed to make it into the culinary category despite that being the focus of her show and stole the spotlight from shows linked to charitable causes.

Another fan agreed, noting the former actress’s Netflix series had been “mocked, laughed at, ridiculed, [and] talked about all throughout the world.” They added that her show was “the most inauthentic lifestyle show ever made,” dubbing it “a clown show for a clown award.”

“F-ck me, the Emmy nomination can be bought? ‘With Love, Meghan,’ sorry but WTF did you even watch it!? It’s not even accurate; most of the stuff is copied from TikTok,” an X user argued. A fellow critic wondered how a canceled show managed to score an Emmy nomination, alleging that she “clearly bought” her spot.

The Duchess Of Sussex’s Netflix Series Isn’t Up For Season 3

The comments about Meghan’s axed show referenced Netflix’s decision not to move forward with season 3. PEOPLE covered the story in January, reporting that the streaming giant had no plans to continue the lifestyle series after two seasons.

A source broke the news, telling the outlet that a third season was off the table, but it wasn’t a permanent cancellation. They claimed Netflix might consider launching specials or one-off projects tied to the series in the future, as they did in December 2025.

“With Love, Meghan” had a holiday special that launched on December 3, 2025. It was a one-hour festive episode that captured Meghan sharing tips for hosting holiday events. She also revealed more about her life with Prince Harry and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

When news of the series’ cancellation dropped, Netflix was still a partner in the Duchess’s lifestyle brand, As Ever. She launched the brand with the first season of “With Love, Meghan” in March 2025. Fast forward to March 2026, the duo was no longer a team.

Insiders told The Sun that Meghan had split from Netflix and was happier controlling her brand without the streaming giant. She allegedly felt like her lifestyle line was being “held back” by the platform. Despite their separation as partners, the pair were still “on good terms.”

“It’s a good time for Meghan to have complete control, given recent successes. Netflix has been a good partner, but she’s wanted to go global with the brand for some time,” a source explained. They noted that the former actress’s global expansion was delayed “by the more cautious Netflix team.”

Meghan Markle’s Netflix Partnership Was Allegedly A Lost Cause

Weeks after claims of Netflix and Meghan’s amicable separation as partners, The Blast reported that other sources painted a different narrative. These insiders argued that the streaming platform suffered significant losses from their deal with the Duchess and chose to cut their relationship short.

One source claimed the platform invested millions in their deal with the media personality, but they did not see “a return whatsoever.” There were also claims of Netflix’s team having a hard time on the lifestyle series because they “did not enjoy working with Meghan.”

Although there were claims of tension between the Duchess and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, both sides denied the rumors. Sarandos has been a consistent supporter of the Sussexes, once claiming the million-dollar deal with Prince Harry and his wife was “a big discovery model” for Netflix.

Adam Driver Rumored to Be Marvel Studios' New Magneto for the MCU's X-Men Reboot : Coastal House Media

A major Marvel rumor is making waves online, with reports claiming that Adam Driver is being lined up to play Magneto in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated X-Men reboot.

The casting rumor quickly gained traction after surfacing through industry scoopers before spreading across social media, Reddit, and several entertainment news outlets. While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the report, Driver’s name has rapidly become one of the most talked about possibilities for the iconic mutant leader.

If the rumor proves true, Driver would become the third major actor to portray Erik Lehnsherr on the big screen, following legendary performances by Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender. The role is widely considered one of Marvel’s most complex characters, requiring an actor capable of balancing both villainy and sympathy, something many fans believe Driver has consistently demonstrated throughout his career.

Adding even more excitement to the speculation is the timing. Marvel Studios is expected to return to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, and many insiders believe the presentation could serve as the stage for the studio’s first official X-Men casting announcements. While rumors continue to point toward Hall H as the place where Marvel could unveil its new mutant lineup, the studio has not confirmed that any X-Men casting announcements are planned, making the speculation just that for now.

Recent reports have suggested Marvel is assembling a fresh roster of mutants following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, with younger actors reportedly being sought for characters like Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Nightcrawler. Veteran actors are still believed to be in the mix for legacy characters such as Magneto and Professor X, making Driver’s rumored involvement a believable fit if Marvel chooses to go that route.

Magneto, Marvel

Driver is no stranger to blockbuster franchises, having portrayed Kylo Ren throughout Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy while also earning Academy Award nominations for Marriage Story and BlacKkKlansman. His ability to portray emotionally layered characters has made him a longtime fan favorite for several Marvel roles.

For now, however, fans should approach the rumor with caution. Marvel Studios has remained silent regarding its X-Mencast, and numerous names have been linked to the reboot over the past year without becoming official.

With San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, fans may not have to wait much longer to learn who will lead the next generation of Marvel’s mutants. Whether Adam Driver ultimately dons Magneto’s iconic helmet remains to be seen, but if the Hall H rumors prove accurate, the official reveal could be just days away.

Travis Kelce’s Wedding Ad Sparks New Fan Backlash

Published

on

Travis Kelce at The 'Players Party' 2022 Co-Hosted By Michael Rubin, MLBPA And Fanatics

Fresh off one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings of the year, Travis Kelce is facing a new wave of criticism, this time over a promotional campaign that appeared to capitalize on the couple’s highly publicized nuptials.

While many fans celebrated the playful nod to his marriage to Taylor Swift, others accused the NFL star of turning a deeply personal milestone into a marketing opportunity, igniting a spirited debate across social media.

The debate began after Accelerator Active Energy unveiled a new advertisement featuring Travis Kelce, who serves as both an ambassador and co-owner of the zero-sugar energy drink brand.

Rather than quietly congratulating the NFL star on his marriage, the campaign leaned heavily into the wedding itself.

One image shared on Instagram showed Kelce smiling over his shoulder while holding a can, with the words “Happily. Ever. After,” written above it.

Another featured a vintage red pickup truck decorated with “Just Married” across the back as cans of the beverage trailed behind it, an apparent nod to Kelce and Swift’s wedding at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

The company reinforced the theme in its caption, writing, “The love story continues. CONGRATS @killatrav!!!”

The campaign quickly made its way to Reddit, where critics argued the advertisement blurred the line between celebrating a personal milestone and monetizing it.

Several commenters accused Travis Kelce of turning one of the biggest moments of his personal life into another branding opportunity.

One user remarked, “To anyone who believes this marriage is anything but a business arrangement: I have some beach property in Kansas to sell you.”

Another user with similar sentiments shared, “I feel like I’m being gaslighted when calling out this blatant monetization of an egotistical couple. Please please let them fail with their endeavours.”

Others were far less subtle. “This is embarrassing. This is the stuff you expect off those scummy influencers who post their kids online not from a (what I’m aware, I’m not American) successful sports person married to a A List pop star,” one angry user shared.

As criticism mounted, attention shifted away from the wedding references and toward the campaign’s creative execution.

Some Reddit users became convinced parts of the advertisement had been created using artificial intelligence after spotting what they believed were visual inconsistencies throughout the images.

One Reddit user pointed to several details, writing, “Holy AI. I need another New Yorker to confirm that I’m not far off, but if you stand at 34th & 6th, the Empire State Building is that far away, and you wouldn’t see it head on like that, only from the side.”

They also added, “And to be able to see the building and Macy’s at the same time as this picture suggests, Macy’s would have to be on your left hand side.”

Others described the campaign as unsettling rather than innovative, with one person writing, “SUPER weird. Subtle marketing would work so well for them but they rolled out their nuptials in the most obvious, tacky way.”

Kelce Also Found Plenty Of Fans Defending The Campaign

Not everyone saw the advertisement as a misstep. On Instagram, many supporters embraced the campaign as a fun extension of Travis Kelce and Swift’s wedding celebrations, filling the comments with congratulatory messages instead of criticism.

“This ad is so good. Congrats to our beautiful souls, Travis and Taylor,” one fan wrote.

Another commented, “Love me some accelerator and Travis!! Go chiefs and go Taylor!! Ready to stock up!!” while a third added, “Congratulations! Such a beautiful day of celebration for all who love Travis and Taylor!”

A fourth fan also noted, “Ah this is so cute. Congratulations t and t,” while a fifth added, “Congratulations!!!! I am very proud of both y’all fr a love story.”

Even as debate continues over Kelce’s wedding-themed advertisement, the newlyweds have also given fans something far less controversial to celebrate.

Swift and Kelce reportedly expanded their family by quietly welcoming a fluffy white Samoyed into their home, marking a new chapter in their life together after tying the knot earlier this month.

While many only recently began speculating about the pup after it appeared in a framed wedding photo, sources shared that the couple actually adopted the dog months before saying “I do.”

The pet was recently spotted accompanying Kelce after he stepped off Swift’s private jet in Florida, further fueling excitement among fans.

The addition is especially notable because Swift has long been known as a devoted cat owner to Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button, making the Samoyed her first publicly known dog.

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

The Resistance, Zion

The Matrix
Advertisement

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Los Angeles, 2049

Blade Runner
Advertisement

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune
Advertisement

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars
Advertisement

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

I Play Rocky Trailer Reveals the Inspiring Story Behind Sylvester Stallone’s Greatest Fight : Coastal House Media

Netflix’s Overlooked R-Rated Action Comedy Brings Famous Noir Detective To Life

Netflix's Overlooked R-Rated Action Comedy Brings Famous Noir Detective To Life

By Matthew Swigonski
| Published

There’s just something about buddy cop movies that makes them so entertaining. From the heaping helping of cheesy one-liners to the eventual uncovering of some nefarious conspiracy, the buddy cop recipe might remain the same, but it’s tried and true. Although it might be overlooked, the Netflix original film Spenser Confidential is an entertaining addition to the genre.

A Modern Take On A Classic Character

spenser confidential

Don’t let the Netflix original title fool you, Spenser Confidential is based on a character that has been decades in the making. First introduced in 1973 in the novel The Goldwulf Manuscript, by author Robert B. Parker, Spenser has been around the block once or twice. As a detective, he’s as hard-nosed as he is intelligent.

Parker wrote 40 novels detailing the adventures of the witty detective until his death in 2010. Since 2013, author Ace Atkins has taken over the detective series. With nearly 50 years of Spenser material to work with, Netflix decided to green-light a film adaptation of Atkins’ novel Robert B. Parker’s Wonderland in 2018.

Mark Wahlberg Is Spenser

spenser confidential

In March 2020, Netflix released Spenser Confidential on its streaming platform. The film is directed by veteran director Peter Berg, who has directed films such as Lone Survivor, Patriot’s Day, and Mile 22. The screenplay is penned by screenwriters Sean O’Keefe and Brian Helgeland.

Tapped to star as the titular character was frequent Berg collaborator Mark Wahlberg. The longtime actor may not be known for being the world’s greatest actor, but he can certainly play the role of a foul-mouthed determined cop. Actors Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Bokeem Woodbine, and Iliza Shlesinger help round out the cast.

Teaming Up With Hawk

spenser confidential

Spenser Confidential follows Spenser after he is sentenced to prison after assaulting police captain John Boylan (Michael Gaston). But after he does his time, it appears that the former cop has put his past behind him and moved on. Spenser is released from prison and finds a place to stay with Hawk (Winston Duke), an up and coming MMA fighter.

However, things take a messy turn when Boylan is murdered, making Spenser a suspect in the case. To make matters worse, another detective also winds up dead shortly after. Smelling something fishy going on, Spenser decides to investigate the case himself.

A Predictable But Satisfying Outing

spenser confidential

Unbeknownst to Spenser, his impromptu investigation catches the eye of a small group of dirty cops. With the help of his friend Hawk, Spenser must quickly unravel the mystery before the dirty attempt to tie up loose ends.

For most diehard Spenser fans, Spenser Confidential might seem like a bit of a letdown. The plot is slightly watered down to fit into the 110 minute runtime. With little to no surprises in the story, the movie can also be predictable at times.

Despite its predictability, the movie is an enjoyable experience to sit back and watch Wahlberg and Duke play off of each other. The duo work very well together in their respective roles. Shlesinger is also a breath of fresh air, utilizing a surprisingly effective Boston accent in a comedic role.

While not groundbreaking, Spenser Confidential is a fun buddy cop movie. With solid performances and a decent amount of action, there’s plenty to like about this movie. Maybe it’s not the best film out there, but it is certainly worth a watch.

Babylon 5 Stars Favorite Episode Is A Nearly Perfect Hour Of Sci-Fi

Babylon 5 Stars Favorite Episode Is A Nearly Perfect Hour Of Sci-Fi

By Jonathan Klotz
| Updated

Babylon 5 was intricately plotted out from the very beginning; this is made clear in the eighth episode of Season 1, “And The Sky Full Of Stars,” which not only calls back to the pilot episode, “The Gathering,” but also lays the groundwork for a grand conspiracy. It was one of many episodes written by creator J. Michael Straczynski and has become a fan favorite thanks to the performance of both Michael O’Hare as a captured and tortured Sinclair and Christopher Neame as the sadistic interrogator Knight Two. It also gets to the heart of an early series mystery: what did happen at the Battle of the Line to end the Earth-Minbari War?

The Earth-Minbari War

There’s no secret that Earth was going to lose against the Minbari. Humanity’s technology was no match for the Minbari ships, and yet, the Minbari surrendered to Earth. As mentioned in “The Gathering” by one of the Minbari, Sinclair has a “hole in his mind” and can’t recall one day during The Battle of the Line. That’s what the unnamed Knight One (Judson Scott) and Knight Two (Neame) have arrived at the station to find out. They have the theory that Sinclair has been compromised and is a Minbari Sleeper Agent.

By abducting Sinclair and putting him in an elaborate digital reconstruction of Babylon 5, Knight Two wants to torture the information out of the Commander.  Using pain and psychological warfare by walking Sinclair through his military career, up to the day so many of his comrades died, Knight Two relentlessly digs at the truth (and chews the scenery with a purposely hammy performance), when Sinclair gives in, dives into his missing memory, and recalls his time on a Minbari ship where he met the Minbari Grey Council. And Delenn was there.

Michael O’Hare’s Favorite Episode

“And The Sky Full Of Stars” was one of O’Hare’s favorite episodes, and for good reason. He had brothers who served in the military and wanted to respect the real danger that comes from serving your country. The incredible moment where he’s turning and seeing his comrades killed, over and over with each turn, was a bit of stage direction suggested by O’Hare himself.

The wham moment of the episode, which reveals Delenn (Mira Furlan) being there while Sinclair was a Minbari prisoner, would go on to impact the rest of Babylon 5. Up to this point, Delenn had been the most reasonable of the ambassadors, a representative for the Minbari Religious Caste, and at no time gave a hint that she was directly involved with the Grey Council. With one lift of a hood, everything fans thought they had figured out regarding Human/Minbari relations went right out the window.

Originally, Walter Koenig was supposed to take on the role of Knight Two, but his health prevented him from being available for filming, resulting in the character of Bester being created for him. Patrick McGoohan, creator and star of the legendary sci-fi series The Prisoner was the second choice, but he was also unavailable. It all worked out, as Christopher Neame’s performance was so good, it’s still praised by fans to this day.

Babylon 5 eventually revealed the entire mystery behind the Grey Council and the Minbari, along with Sinclair’s ultimate destiny, but it took awhile to get there. Since there was always a story in place, unlike other sci-fi shows that claimed to have a plan when none existed, “And The Sky Full Of Stars” is able to pay off what came before, set up what comes later, and, in retrospect, stand out for laying all the pieces in front of the audience before they even knew the puzzle existed.
