The Odyssey rich list: (L-R) Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Zendaya at the world premiere in London this month

It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest film releases of the year.

And a huge part of the hype around The Odyssey is its incredibly star-studded cast who have been busy on the film’s promotional trail in recent weeks.

The likes of Zendaya, her husband Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon  and Robert Pattinson star – but who comes out on top in a rich list of the cast?

The Christopher Nolan-fronted film is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic the Odyssey, which sees the titular Greek King embark on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War in a bid to reunite with his beloved wife Penelope.

Matt, 55, is starring as the titular hero Odysseus, while Devil Wears Prada icon Anne, 43, plays his devoted queen, who is forced to fend off potential suitors in her husband’s absence.

In what has been dubbed his ‘most extreme project to date’ alongside an impressively starry cast – the pressure for Christopher to win over critics is like no other.

Already known for his impressive art and high-budget fare, Christopher’s latest film could prove to be his most ambitious yet, with the $250million budget the most expensive of his career and his first shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras.

But who is the richest of his cast?

Director Christopher Nolan – $250M net worth

Filmmaker Christopher, 55, is one of the most prominent and successful directors of all time with classics like Interstellar, Dunkirk, The Dark Knight and Inception.

His films have earned over $6 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing film directors of all time.

In 2024 it was revealed that his final payday for Oppenheimer was just shy of $100 million, after the film grossed almost a billion dollars at the box office.

The blockbuster film starring Cillian Murphy as atomic bomb creator J Robert Oppenheimer, raked in an eye-watering $958 million worldwide.

This figure is supposedly an amalgamation of Nolan’s salary, box-office escalators, backend compensation and a bonus from his Academy Award wins.

Oppenheimer nabbed a whopping seven Oscar wins, including Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Original Score, Actor in a Leading Role (Cillian), Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert Downey Jr), Cinematography and Achievement in Film Editing.

Made with a $100million budget, Oppenheimer took the crown for highest-grossing Best Picture Winner since The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, which was made in 2004.

Christopher has reached a career high with his epic take on Homer’s The Odyssey, with five star reviews for the star-studded movie flooding in from around the globe.

The review embargo lifted on Wednesday ahead of the movie’s release on Friday, and with nearly 60 reviews in so far, The Odyssey has achieved a near-perfect score on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes with a current standing of 99%.

That 99% score places Nolan’s 13th feature film at the top of the pile of his past movies with The Dark Knight trailing behind with a 94% critic score.

The reviews for The Odyssey are almost universal in their soaring praise and five star ratings.

The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner declared that ‘Nolan’s film – its star-studded cast led by Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Zendaya – is a glorious cinematic experience, a triumph both of story-telling and movie-making.’

Viner added ‘I rarely say this of movies nearly three hours long – one viewing simply isn’t enough.’

Charlize also has plenty of lucrative behind-the-scenes work as a producer under her belt.

She also has a series of long-standing endorsement deals, such as being the global face of the Christian Dior J’adore perfume.

The star was joined by her daughters August, 12, and Jackson, 14, at the New York City debut of her star-studded Greek epic on Tuesday.

While it was a school night, Charlize had clearly made an exception for the very special occasion.

The trio were seen making their way through the event hustle and bustle, with Charlize gently guiding her daughter August through the throng as Jackson followed close behind.

It marked a rare public appearance for Jackson and August, who Theron adopted in 2012 and 2015, respectively.

Adoption was always an avenue Charlize wanted to pursue when it came to her family.

I don’t feel like I’m missing out on something,’ she explained during a 2018 interview with Chelsea Handler for Elle. ‘This was always my first choice, even when I was in a relationship.

‘I was very honest with my partners that I was open to having my own biological kids but that adoption had to be a part of my life. I felt that strongly about it.’

His wealth comes from starring roles in top-grossing films like the Bourne franchise, Saving Private Ryan and Oppenheimer.

Matt has appeared in over 70 films that have collectively grossed over $9.8 billion worldwide.

In addition, Matt and Ben Affleck co-founded and run an independent production company called Artists Equity.

Matt has been centre stage on the press trail with a string of recent appearances to promote his role in The Odyssey.

And by the actor’s side has been his wife Luciana and their four daughters, as the family have become fixtures supporting him at red carpet events in recent years.

Matt married his wife Luciana in 2005, after they met while filming Stuck On You together in 2003.

The couple are parents to three daughters, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15, and Matt also adopted Luciana’s daughter Alexia, 27, in 2005.

Matt’s family were proudly in attendance to support him at the world premiere of The Odyssey in NYC on Tuesday night.

He reportedly made up to $40 million from the final films.

Robert has also had lucrative roles in The Batman, Tenet, and this year starred opposite Zendaya again in The Drama.

He also has a multi-million-dollar endorsement deal with Dior men’s fragrances.

‘I’ve never seen people look so exhausted [working on a movie],’ he explained of filming The Odyssey recently.

‘This was only a third of the way. I started a third of the way through the movie, and they’d already been to [two] countries by that point, and people just looked like… at the end of every day, people were broken.’

His co-star Tom also said in an interview this week that the shoot was his ‘toughest’ job to date.

Robert is in a relationship with model and singer Suki Waterhouse. They share one child together.

The film returned for a lucrative second instalment earlier this year for which Anne reportedly earnt $12.5 million.

Meryl Streep, 78, and Emily Blunt, 43, were also each paid the same to reprise their beloved characters from the 2006 original film.

Sources told Variety that while Meryl was the biggest name, she advocated for the other two leading ladies to earn just as much as she would, negotiating a ‘favored nations’ contractual agreement in which all parties are paid equally.

In contrast, Anne reportedly earned a $1 million paycheck for the 2006 film while Blunt took home $800,000.

Aside from The Devil Wears Prada she has also had lucrative roles in The Princess Diaries, the Dark Knight Rises, and is thought to have earned $10 million for her Oscar-winning role in Les Misérables.

Anne already shares sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, six, with husband Adam Shulman, 45, and announced her third pregnancy with a social media post in late June.

Taking to Instagram, she gave fans a glimpse at her growing bump while dressed in a draped white top and matching maxi skirt.

She attached the Barbara Lewis song Baby, I’m Yours and also made the title the caption.

‘I know that not everybody who wants to be a parent gets to be. I’m just blown away by how fortunate I am,’ the actress told People in April as she was named Most Beautiful Woman.

‘It went really well for me twice, and that’s really lucky,’ she acknowledged about her prior pregnancies.

Anne also credited her husband, whom she wed in 2012, with holding down the fort while she works.

The rapper previously worked with Nolan in a purely musical context for his 2020 sci-fi action thriller Tenet, in which Scott performed the film’s theme song, THE PLAN.

In a GQ profile of Scott from that year, Nolan spoke about his collaboration with Scott on the performer’s first song written for a film.

‘His voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle,’ Nolan said. ‘His insights into the musical and narrative mechanism [composer] Ludwig Göransson and I were building were immediate, insightful, and profound.’

Scott and Nolan also share a love for premium-format IMAX film.

Ahead of the release of Tenet, Scott shot his music video for FRANCHISE – which he also directed – on IMAX stock, and the video was later shown before IMAX screenings of Tenet in order to lure moviegoers back to cinemas.

Scott later shared a photo of a handwritten note Nolan had shared with him in response to the video.

‘Travis – Love the video (shot on film, no less!)’ Nolan gushed in the note, which was written in pencil in a lined notebook. ‘I can’t wait to hear it on the IMAX speakers, and see those sheep stampede across the giant screen as a part of a Travis/Tenet/Travis sandwich! Great work, Chris.’

Zendaya – who plays Athena in The Odyssey – is undoubtably one of the biggest stars of the film and has had an incredibly successful few years with roles in Spider-Man, Euphoria and the Dune franchise.

The actress, 29, reportedly earned around $1 million per episode for her role as drug addict Rue in HBO’s Euphoria which returned for a third and final series this year.

She also secured large back-end bonuses for the Spider-Man franchise and is thought to have received a $10 million salary for the 2024 tennis film Challengers.

Zendaya has also earnt millions from high-profile deals with luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, and Lancôme.

Earlier this year her husband Tom confirmed that they were married during the press tour for Spider-Man.

In a recent Esquire UK interview, published last week, Tom ended months of speculation about the couple’s marriage as he declared: ‘I found my person. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been’.

Referencing a number of highly-realistic, AI-generated ‘wedding’ images of the couple that went viral on Instagram and TikTok, Tom was asked if any family members had thought they’d missed their actual wedding after seeing the pictures.

Tom answered: ‘No, because they were all there… That’s all you’ll get on that’, confirming that the nuptials did actually take place.

Zendaya’s longtime stylist, Law Roach, first claimed Tom and Zendaya were married during an interview at the 2026 Actor Awards in Los Angeles in February.

The stylist, 47, casually dropped in the news by saying: ‘The wedding has already happened. You missed it!’, but the couple declined to clarify at the time.

Zendaya first debuted her engagement ring, designed by London-based jeweler Jessica McCormack, at the 2025 Golden Globes.

Tom, 30, – who plays Telemachus the son of Odysseus and Penelope – is part of a movie power couple with his wife Zendaya.

The vast majority of his wealth comes from playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He has reportedly earned around $18.75 million from Marvel films alone.

Tom has also starred in other high-profile non-Marvel films such as Uncharted, Cherry, and The Impossible.

More recently he started his own non-alcoholic beer brand Bero and has invested in pricey property in the Kingston area of London where he is from.

Tom recently revealed how Zendaya ‘boosted his confidence’ while filming The Odyssey – as she said it was ‘the dream’ to be cast together.

At the recent world premiere Tom was asked what he had learnt from working so closely alongside his wife on the project.

He replied: ‘To be confident and be bold. She makes big choices when she plays characters.

‘She’s not afraid to create the characters and she does it in a way where they feel like real people.’

He added to Entertainment Tonight: ‘She makes big, bold choices. I think there are a few actors who can do it as well as she can, and I love watching her do it.’

Meanwhile Zendaya has said that being cast with Tom in The Odyssey was ‘the dream’.

The actress said she was already ‘so proud’ of Tom when he got cast in the epic, and she was even more delighted they got to share the experience together when she joined him in the star-studded ensemble.

She told Extra: ‘I remember when he got the call, I was, like, absolutely over the moon, so excited, so proud.

‘And then never did it… cross my mind that a second call would be coming to our home, you know? So, that was so special.

‘And yeah, just to be able to share something like that and watch him work in this context… It’s the dream… It’s absolutely the dream. So, I was happy.’

Lupita, 43, has built her fortune through starring roles in major blockbuster franchises such as Black Panther and Star Wars.

She also has a long-standing, lucrative global ambassadorship with Lancôme and other top brands.

Nolan recently defended his decision to cast Kenyan actress Nyong’o in the movie after Musk called the casting ‘historically inaccurate.’

Lupita is set to play Helen of Troy, and was named People Magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful Woman’ in 2014 following her triumphant Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for 12 Years A Slave.

Nolan defended his castings, saying: ‘Hopefully they’ll enjoy the film, even if they don’t agree with everything. The oldest depictions of Homeric characters tend to be depicted in the manner of people living in Homer’s time…

‘So there’s a pretty strong case there for portraying things that way because that’s the way the first audience received the story.’

Musk was called out for his remarks about the casting in January by The View host Sunny Hostin.

She said: ‘Anyone can portray a fictional character. It doesn’t have to be a white person that plays this part.’

She added: ‘I think we have to call a thing a thing when we’re talking about someone like Elon Musk… We know what this is.

‘He is a white supremacist. In my view, he is a racist.’

Emmy-winner Alec Baldwin has since weighed in on Musk’s anti-woke campaign against Nolan’s movie.

In a public display of support for Lupita and Nolan, Baldwin wrote on Instagram: ‘Dear Elon… but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world… Alec.’

Elliot, 39, – who plays the Greek soldier Sinon in The Odyssey – was catapulted to stardom with his lead role in the 2007 indie hit Juno.

Since then he has starred in major franchise and commercial films, including Inception and X-Men: The Last Stand.

He has also starred as Viktor Hargreeves in the hit Netflix series The Umbrella Academy.

Elliot and his girlfriend Julia Shiplett stepped out for a rare date night as they both attended the NYC premiere of The Odyssey on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old actor, who came out as a transgender back in 2020, was joined by the Overcompensating actress on the star-studded red carpet as the pair posed for sweet photos together.

Their rare appearance together on the red carpet comes a little over one year after the Juno star went public with their relationship.

Back in June 2025, Page uploaded an Instagram post as both he and Shiplett took a selfie together while standing on a rainbow-painted street. In the caption, the actor simply added a rainbow and heart emojis.

Later that same year, the pair made their red carpet debut while attending a Gucci short film premiere at Milan Fashion Week.

Since then, Page and Shiplett have been featured on each other’s social media accounts.

There was praise for The Odyssey before even the review embargo lifted.

Last week critics rushed to social media to hail Nolan’s 13th feature as ‘flawless filmmaking.’

Universal Studios opted to skip the previews it typically holds for influencers, meaning the majority of the initial reactions on social media come from members of the press invited to the gala premiere in Leicester Square.

Introducing the movie in London last week, British filmmaker Nolan told the audience that holding the global premiere in London was ‘a full circle moment’ after growing up ‘coming to see movies in Leicester Square’ and ‘dreaming of one day making a movie that would fill this screen.’

He then issued a lighthearted warning to the crowd of critics, pointing out: ‘You are the first in the world to see this film so be kind’.

How a farming project in Sierra Leone helps amputees rebuild lives

How a farming project in Sierra Leone helps amputees rebuild lives

An empowering initiative teaches people with limb loss how to farm sustainably, enabling many to grow their own food and launch small commercial plots

A farming programme in Sierra Leone is helping amputees gain skills, independence and a path to income. Founded by pastor-turned-farmer Mambud Samai, the initiative teaches people with limb loss how to farm sustainably, enabling many to grow their own food and launch small commercial plots.

Samai was forced to flee the country during Sierra Leone’s 11-year-long civil war, during which many civilians suffered life-changing injuries. The conflict is estimated to have left almost 30,000 amputee victims across the country, with many still waiting for reparations, finding it difficult or impossible to get work, and left with no other option than to beg on the streets. “Historically, this community has been left with very little support from the state, few work opportunities, and very little dignity,” said Samai.

After spending two years in a refugee camp in the neighbouring country of Guinea, he decided something needed to be done to help other victims of the conflict.

Initially, he decided to use football as a means of building community for amputees, setting up the Single-Leg Amputee Sports Association in 2001. This idea found success, with leagues established not only in the capital city, Freetown, but against four other provinces, allowing both men and women to play. “We still run the association today, using the power of the beautiful game to help communities find hope.”

However, Samai felt that the amputee community still needed something more. In 2018, he travelled to the Asian Rural Institute in Japan, completing a course in community development and organic farming practices and learning skills to bring back to Sierra Leone, where he immediately set up Farming on Crutches.

The scheme runs from a small farm which operates as a ‘classroom’; participants are brought onsite from across the country, where during the duration they live, work and learn. They then take knowledge back to their own villages and are encouraged to set up their own agricultural practices.

The Single-Leg Amputee Sports Association built a community and lifelong friendships

Mustapha Bockarie, a participant in the very first Farming on Crutches training group, lost an arm after being hit with a stray bullet after the civil war and struggled with feeling like an outcast after his amputation. “My friends said I was a burden to them,” he explained, “but this training makes people who see us as beggars come closer to us. We made a name for ourselves.”

Bockarie returned to his village after the scheme, where he now runs a community farm with his neighbors; together, they raise goats and grow enough food to eat and sell. He even keeps bees and teaches others about sustainable farming, which  provides him with a steady income.

Samai is particularly proud of the achievements of a 2024 cohort who, using bicycle wheels, timber, and bamboo already growing on the farm, set about designing and constructing a more accessible wheelbarrow.

Zainab Makieu, a member of this team, said: “The bamboo wheelbarrow is very important for us who are physically challenged. Because I wouldn’t say we are disabled: we all know disability is not inability. I see my other disabled brothers and sisters and feel comfortable when I’m here.”

Farming on Crutches is now facing a waitlist of eager hopefuls in Sierra Leone wanting to join the scheme; the programme recently welcomed its 100th participant, with plans to expand to other West African countries in the coming years. It also plans to incorporate further teachings in skills like bee-keeping, and adding more value to the farmers’ raw produce through drying, fermenting, storage and packaging.

“I’ve been so delighted, and deeply rewarded, to see my own passion for sustainable farming be matched by the enthusiasm of our participants,” said Samai. “At the very beginning they may know next to nothing about agriculture, but they complete our course and return to their local communities as change makers.”

Argentina v England: Tourists move Buenos Aires base to avoid World Cup party

Published

on

Steve Borthwick

Borthwick’s side, who watched the game in a conference room in their hotel, will now instead stay in a hotel near Buenos Aires international airport on the southern outskirts on Sunday night.

“I wouldn’t suggest that everybody got a great night’s sleep last night – there were still fireworks going off at 4am this morning,” Borthwick said.

“Most of us were on the other side of the hotel and earplugs were issued to everybody, so we were prepared.

“I went up to the hotel terrace that overlooks the street fairly late and there were still a load of players just watching it and just taking it in. People jumping up and down for hours in the streets. Fireworks going off. It was something to see.

“We’d obviously all wanted England to win but one of the experiences of touring is seeing a spectacle like that in a different part of the world.”

England flanker Henry Pollock added to the decibels in the hours before Wednesday’s match, with footage emerging of the 21-year-old back row taunting local football fans gathering for the match in Plaza de la Republica.

The incident took place at England returned from a training session to their hotel on a bus. Footage showed Pollock goading fans from the upper windows, giving them a thumbs down, sticking out his tongue and waving and shushing.

Argentina fans responded with gestures of their own, with one punching the bus windows.

“Henry’s full of character,” Borthwick said. “We want character in our game and we want character in our squad.

“This squad really embraces what he brings. It takes all kinds of different personalities and we’ve got some players who wouldn’t do that and then you’ve got Henry who would go and do that.

“We embrace it. I think it was done in good nature and it came from a very good place.”

England have won nine of their past 10 meetings with the Pumas, including both Tests while on tour without their British and Irish Lions last summer.

After their most recent meeting – a 27-23 win for England at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium – Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi was involved in a confrontation with England flanker Tom Curry in the tunnel.

England have named the same starting XV that beat Fiji 73-8 last weekend while Argentina’s team contains a clutch of players based in England, including Bath full-back Santiago Carreras, Bristol centre Matias Moroni and Harlequins second row Guido Petti.

Argentina; S Carreras; Delguy, Moroni, Piccardo, M Carreras; Albornoz, Garcia; Vivas, Montoya (capt), Rapetti, Petti, Alemanno, Grondona, Kremer, Oviedo.

Replacements: Ruiz, Wenger, Delgado, Elias, Matera, Moro, Benitez Cruz, Cinti.

Andy Burnham to promise an ‘unashamedly Labour’ government as details of first speech as leader revealed

Manchester Evening News

The Makerfield MP is set to promise a ‘distinctly Labour future’

The first details of Andy Burnham’s first speech as Labour leader can be revealed as he is set to be crowned at a special conference tomorrow (July 17).

The Makerfield MP is set to appear at the Party’s special conference tomorrow (July 18) where he will officially be named as the party’s new leader.

His official coronation as Prime Minister will follow on Monday (July 20) after Sir Keir Starmer’s last PMQs took place yesterday.

Click here to get the biggest stories straight to your inbox in our Daily Newsletter

A Labour source has revealed that Burnham is set to pay tribute to Starmer in his maiden speech, crediting him with returning Labour to government and delivering ‘one of the largest election victories in [its] history’.

He is also expected to praise Starmer’s government for its achievements including improvements to the NHS, investment in public services, and the passing of the Hillsborough Law – a campaign of which Burnham has been a prominent supporter.

He is to set out his vision for a ‘renewed’ Labour government that will focus on ‘driving growth in every postcode’ and ‘returning power to communities’.

He will say it will be a government that will have the ‘courage to fix the big things that politics has neglected’ and the ‘conviction to argue for our plans’.

He is also set to argue that only a ‘confident’ Labour government can ‘lift Britain up’ by ‘putting people and places back at the heart of national decision-making’.

Looking to recent history, he is expected to say that Britain ‘took a series of wrong turns in the 1980s’ and that a ‘new path’ is required to build a country that ‘works for all people and places’.

The government he leads will be authentically Labour, sources claim, and will offer a ‘confident alternative’ with a ‘distinctively Labour’ programme of economic renewal, more public control, reindustrialisation and power back in the hands of local communities.

He is expected to promise that the party under his leadership will be ‘unashamedly Labour’ in its priorities and decisions, and that the party will become ‘more united’ and open to working with other parties ‘rather than internal division’.

He is also set to commit to leading the entirety of ‘this great country’ including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the north and south of England.

He will praise the achievements of the Labour government, including stronger workers’ rights, NHS improvements, investment in public services and the passing of the Hillsborough Law.

The ‘devastated’ family of a bodyguard who protected the Kardashians and David Beckham have paid tribute to him after he died in a motorcycle crash.

Mason Haynes, 52, was killed earlier this month – days before his birthday – in a collision involving two Harley-Davidson motorbikes, a BMW X3 and a motorhome van on the A287 Farnham Road near Hook, Hants.

He worked for the likes of Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, her Formula One ace boyfriend Lewis Hamilton, and her ex-husband Kanye West.

He also protected Beyoncé, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, David Beckham and Sabrina Carpenter.

Mr Haynes’ family have said they can’t imagine life without their ‘gentle giant’.

They said: ‘We are completely devastated by the loss of our beloved Mason, a devoted husband, father, son, brother and dear friend, just two days before his 53rd birthday.

‘He leaves his wife Fay, his daughter Brooke and son Noah, who were the centre of his world.

‘It is impossible to put into words the void his death has left.

‘Mason was larger than life in every sense. He lived life to the full, loved deeply and made an indelible impression on everyone he met.

‘He was funny, adventurous, loyal and hugely generous with his time.

‘Through his work as a professional bodyguard, Mason dedicated much of his life to protecting others.

‘To those closest to him, he was our gentle giant. He was the person we turned to for strength, advice, reassurance and laughter.

‘He brought people together, helped those who were struggling and made people feel safe.

‘He was the kind of man who would travel hundreds of miles to help a friend and never thought twice about standing beside someone who needed him.

‘We would also respectfully ask that our family’s privacy is respected as we try to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.

‘This is an incredibly difficult time for us all, and we ask for the space to grieve while the investigation continues.

‘We are deeply grateful for the kindness, support and condolences we have received.’

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for his family.

One source close to the family previously told the Daily Mail that Mr Haynes worked closely with Hamilton up until his death.

Working his way up from the pub and club security scene, the father was employed as a bouncer to protect some of the most high-profile people in the world. His career had taken him to 115 different countries, including 22 across Africa.

Mr Haynes was working with Kim when, in October 2016, armed men disguised as police officers stormed her luxury Paris apartment. The group held the star at gunpoint before tying her up and locking her in the bathroom while stealing millions of dollars’ worth of jewellery.

Talking about the incident, Mr Haynes said: ‘I can’t go into much detail about that; I was part of that team, and that incident was simply a set of unfortunate circumstances which led to something bad happening.’

Elsewhere, Mr Haynes spoke highly of the Kardashian family.

‘Trust builds. It’s such a close relationship, and that’s what makes it so unique,’ he said in one interview.

Fay Cameron-Clarke, 52, Mr Haynes’ wife, said: ‘Mason wasn’t just my husband. He was my best friend, my rock and the heart of our family.

‘He was the most loyal and loving man and he gave so much of himself to everyone around him.

‘Whether he was protecting people through his work or travelling hundreds of miles to help a friend, that was simply who he was.

‘Mason lived without limits. He embraced every opportunity life offered, making friends wherever he went, lifting those around him and leaving an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

‘His courage, generosity, wisdom and unwavering loyalty will never be forgotten.

‘Brooke, Noah and I are completely heartbroken, and we’re struggling to imagine life without him.

‘The love and support we’ve received has been overwhelming, and knowing how many lives Mason touched has brought us comfort during the darkest days of our lives.’

The second motorcyclist, a man in his 30s from Farnham, Hampshire, suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital.

Bellingham could be bigger than Beckham: England star’s brand on track to become one of most valuable in world sport as he cashes in on multi-million pound sponsorship deals after World Cup

Published

on

Jude Bellingham has been player of the World Cup for many - and experts believe he may follow Sir David Beckham (pictured this week in Miami) into the billionaire league

Jude Bellingham‘s blockbuster World Cup has put him on course to eclipse Sir David Beckham as English football’s next billionaire.

The superstar, 23, who has been the tournament’s standout performer, is building a commercial empire to match his exploits on the pitch.

He is already believed to earn more than £40million-a-year from his Real Madrid salary and endorsement deals.

Already the face of Adidas, Louis Vuitton, EA Sports FC, Lucozade and Kim Kardashian‘s Skims, ‘Brand Bellingham’ is now becoming one of the most valuable in world sport.

Mark Borkowski, one of Britain’s best-known PR gurus, said: ‘Jude Bellingham could become a greater athlete than David Beckham. Whether he becomes a bigger brand is a much higher bar.

‘Beckham’s brand was built on extraordinary forces converging at exactly the right time. No footballer had ever occupied quite that intersection of sport, fashion, music and celebrity.’

More lucrative agreements are expected to follow after his World Cup heroics, which have included six goals and a string of match-winning performances.

Industry experts believe the United States could become his most lucrative market, because Americans love his self-confidence.

Mr Borkowski believes Bellingham has demonstrated his value both on and off the pitch.

He pointed to a video that emerged after England’s victory over DR Congo in which Bellingham stopped to speak to disabled Venezuelan journalist Manu Gutiérrez while most teammates walked past.

Bellingham leaned down to speak to him in Spanish after being moved by the plight of Venezuela following a devastating earthquake that killed almost 5,000 people.

Mr Borkowski said the footballer had shown himself to be a ‘decent human being’ and the authentic role model brands are desperate to be associated with.

‘That comes from somebody being incredibly human and decent,’ he said of his behaviour.

‘There are plenty of examples of people ignoring mascots, ignoring journalists, ignoring fans. Messi has this bodyguard that surrounds him and stops them. But Bellingham is very open. And that’s what he and his team will be thinking about – it’s not just what you do on the field,’ he told The Times.

US football finance expert Roger Bennett has said Americans have embraced Bellingham – and his confidence.

He told the Financial Times: ‘His mentality is so rare for an Englishman – he actually has an American mentality.

‘He sees himself as a winner and is willing to talk about himself that way with a cocksure confidence that many English people have a difficult relationship with but Americans love.’

Just a year ago, however, his manager Thomas Tuchel described some of his behaviour on the pitch as ‘a bit repulsive’ and claimed it upset his own mother, Gabriele.

Bellingham was also accused of arrogance after yelling ‘Who else?’ following his spectacular overhead kick at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Yet fans have embraced his performances and personality, including the way he has led England’s squad in singing the team’s unlikely tournament anthem, Wonderwall by Oasis.

Jude has said his parents, who are understood to have separated but remain close, are his heroes and it was his grandfather William who inspired his patriotism.

William, a teacher from Southend who died in November 2020, has gone viral this week after a clip of him on Mastermind answering question after question on ‘Nigeria between 1900 and 1966’ went viral.

Adidas spotted Bellingham’s commercial potential long before he became a global superstar.

The sportswear giant signed him while he was still starring for Birmingham City’s first team at the age of 16.

By 17 he had already made his England debut against Ireland in the same month his beloved granddad William died.

Sam Handy, general manager of Adidas’s football division, said: ‘Jude has that aspirational quality that all good brands look for as an ambassador; anyone who has ever met him will tell you his demeanour is incredibly polite, humble and professional.

‘That said, he has an edge, an aura, that makes him comfortable under pressure and it’s clear that for him every moment he steps on the pitch is a chance to show the world what he can do and express himself.’

After a hugely successful spell with Borussia Dortmund, Bellingham followed in Beckham’s footsteps by joining Real Madrid in a £113million move.

One Spanish football executive told the Financial Times: ‘Fans and brands are increasingly drawn towards players and not just the teams they play for.

‘You want someone whose personality stands out above the rest. His celebration, his attitude, the way he carries himself both on and off the pitch — he has that unquantifiable thing that we call authenticity.’

Sir David Beckham is Britain’s first billionaire sportsman after he and wife Victoria doubled their wealth in the last year, according to the Sunday Times Rich List published in May.

The celebrity couple now have a combined fortune of £1.185 billion, a significant increase from the £500million estimated net worth they had on the 2025 list.

The major uptick in wealth is attributed to Sir David’s investments in the US, as the signing of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami until 2028 has lifted the value of his stake in the club, and a vast property development adjoining Inter’s home has provided another windfall.

Meanwhile revenues at Lady Beckham’s eponymous fashion line have topped £100million.

It came in the year that Beckham received his knighthood – but the family also suffered the heartbreak of their very public estrangement from their eldest son Brooklyn.

The foundations of Jude’s success were laid long before the fame and fortune arrived.

Bellingham’s mother Denise, whom he affectionately calls his ‘Queen’, shared his flat in Madrid’s exclusive La Finca district when he moved there.

She is reported to help cook his meals, make his bed and drive him to training.

A former HR professional, she manages her son’s financial affairs and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in his career.

His father Mark Bellingham, a former West Midlands Police officer and prolific non-league striker nicknamed the ‘Non-League Pelé’, has largely focused on supporting Jude’s younger brother Jobe, now also a star at Borussia Dortmund.

The sacrifices made by both parents were considerable. For years they spent evenings and weekends ferrying their sons around the country for training sessions and matches.

While many young footballers seek independence from their parents, Bellingham has frequently spoken about the benefits of having his mother nearby.

At his Real Madrid unveiling, he said: ‘The role my mum is playing is massive. It is probably the biggest role of anyone, more than my coaches and managers, to be honest.’

Acting as a moderating influence as his profile continues to soar, Denise helps keep him grounded.

‘Without my mum, sometimes I’d get too low with the lows or too high with the highs and I stay pretty humble because I’ve got her around,’ he said.

‘It’s also great to have her there because she’s a great laugh as well. We get on so well and we’re always doing stuff together.’

Although Bellingham later idolised stars such as Wayne Rooney, his first footballing hero was his father.

Mark scored more than 700 goals in around 900 appearances during a remarkable non-league career, juggling spells with clubs including Leamington, Stourbridge and Sutton Coldfield Town alongside his police career.

He retired from football at the age of 41 in 2017 and is believed to have since stepped away from policing. He rarely discusses the achievements of either of his sons publicly – but is fiercely defensive of them.

A Southend United supporter, Mark introduced Jude to football, with the England star’s first live matches coming alongside his father at Roots Hall.

Speaking about his father in a recent interview, Jude said: ‘We talk about footballing heroes, and my dad was like my first.

‘When you go and watch him play every week in non-league, you know it’s not the Premier League or anything, but seeing the way that he played and the atmosphere, it made me fall in love with football so he was probably my first hero.

‘After the first few times of going, I’d start to pay a bit more attention to the games and stuff, the atmosphere and he’s scoring goals so you see him celebrating and stuff like that – you want that to be me.

‘Growing up, he’d always give me tips on what I could do and now it gets to a certain age and it sort of flips and that’s brilliant because we have that sort of relationship like father and son and then as I got older, like coach and player.’

His parents have acted as a grounding force for the midfielder.

And many believe Bellingham is uniquely positioned to become the defining sporting brand of his generation and the first English footballer since Sir David Beckham to turn worldwide fame into a billion-pound fortune.

Michelle, 62, made an appearance at Norman’s restaurant in Oak Bluffs for an event hosted by The Vineyard Icon Foundation.

The former First Lady looked younger than ever as she showed off her dance moves, wearing a strappy white tank top which had an open-style back and Bermuda-style jean shorts.

She completed her youthful look with a pair of oversized, aviator-style sunglasses.

Another clip showed Michelle grooving to the song Wobble along with members of the crowd.

The two have been married for over three decades, but in recent years, they’ve been inundated with rumors that their marriage has become rocky.

The speculation first erupted when Michelle skipped two high-profile events Obama attended solo in January 2025.

During a recent interview with the New Yorker, Barack confessed that there was ‘genuine tension’ in their household because Michelle wanted him to ‘ease up’ on public duties to spend more time with her.

In addition, during a joint sit-down interview with People last month, Barack admitted he wasn’t sure if his partnership with Michelle was an equal one.

‘I don’t know if it’s been an equal partnership, but it’s worked out for me pretty well,’ he said. ‘I’ve gotten more out of it than she has.’

He continued: ‘For her, it’s probably more of a mixed bag.’

Meanwhile, Michelle heaped praise on her spouse as she responded to his remarks.

‘My husband is always thinking about reflecting the light on other people,’ she said. ‘I am so proud of how my husband showed up in that role [as President of the United States], how he shows up every day.’

Michelle added that together, she and Barack were each other’s ‘counterbalance.’

‘The truth is, I probably would have been someone who stayed more put,’ she said. ‘I think I would have had a beautiful life here, but it would have been smaller.

‘But because of who my husband is, he offered all of us – our girls, my mom, my family – a broader sense of what’s possible in life.

‘He made me think more broadly about what I could do with this Harvard law degree besides be a lawyer. He gave me the courage. He was my ballast. He was like, “I got you.” And however hard it’s been, the ups and downs, he’s got me.’

The family was recently seen all together as they opened The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago in June.

During her speech at the Obama Presidential Center, Michelle gushed that there had not been a single second in their marriage where she was not ‘left in awe.’

She also commended Barack for his ‘truest essence, stubborn optimism and unflinching courage.’

In addition, Michelle paid tribute to what she said was Barack’s ‘dazzling brilliance, unpretentious decency, ferocious work ethic and unshakable moral fiber.’

‘The Obamas are very much a reflection of that,’ she added.

And Goldson, whose family has been going to Martha’s Vineyard for five generations, said she hopes that the Obamas will make an appearance at the awards show one day.

World Cup 2026: England squad debating Tuchel’s tactics against Argentina

Published

on

England players on the field applauding the fans after the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina

In fresh comments given to British newspapers, Tuchel was asked in detail about the tactics and approach.

“I haven’t seen the data yet but I think right after the goal, the momentum swings completely in ball possession, chances and it drops dramatically,” he said.

“We got too passive within our structure. I tried to help, not to become more passive with a back five but to be more active, to be quicker out to the wingers, not to open up the gaps between the back four.

“We encouraged everyone to step out, to be more active within the structure, but we just struggled.

“We couldn’t find any duels any more which was why we dropped deeper and deeper, which was never the plan but it happened.

“We needed to get back on the ball otherwise you cannot break the pressure and you cannot get the momentum back.”

Tuchel said ball possession “plays a crucial role”.

“It’s maybe not in our DNA like it is in the Spanish DNA or Argentinian or Brazilian DNA to take the ball, control the game and the ball, which is also a big problem,” he said.

“I still think we can show how good football players we are. I think that is still in us, as I see it in training and in every camp.”

Tuchel was appointed with the belief that he was the man to finally get England over the line.

Gareth Southgate had reached one World Cup semi-final and two European Championship finals during his reign – but Tuchel’s tactical acumen was viewed as what was needed to turn England from nearly men to winners.

But the notion from some players that Tuchel got it wrong in Atlanta will pose an intriguing player-manager dynamic heading into the European Championship qualifying campaign.

While Tuchel continues to have the full backing of Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham, the criticism the German has faced since the defeat to Argentina won’t have failed to register.

As always the FA will review England’s performance at the tournament once they return home after Saturday’s bronze medal match against France.

While England’s run to the semi-final is still viewed as an achievement by those at the FA, it is clear there is much to unpack with regards to the circumstances behind their loss to Argentina.

Navy bosses open probe after Blue Angels team flew terrifyingly low over Florida beachgoers

The U.S. Navy¿s elite Blue Angels demonstration squadron has launched a safety review after one of its fighter jets flew unusually low over packed Florida beaches

The US Navy’s legendary Blue Angels squadron has launched a safety review after one of its fighter jets tore across a packed Florida beach at an alarmingly low altitude.

The probe comes after thousands of spectators gathered for the Blue Angels’ annual ‘Breakfast with the Blues’ flyover at Pensacola Beach on Wednesday morning, when an F/A-18 Super Hornet screamed along the shoreline in a low pass that unleashed a powerful jet wash from the aircraft’s engines.

Shocking footage captured by bystanders shows the sleek fighter roaring over sunbathers as tents collapse, umbrellas flip inside out and plumes of sand erupt across the beach.

Beachgoers were forced to grab their belongings and duck for cover as the jet’s exhaust blasted across the shoreline, with some spectators describing the moment as both terrifying and unforgettable.

The Blue Angels later confirmed that one aircraft had flown ‘lower than standard profiles’ during the arrival and confirmed that team leadership had launched a review into the incident.

‘The safety of our hometown community, spectators, and our pilots is our highest priority,’ the squadron said in a statement.

‘Team leadership is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the maneuver and conducting a thorough safety review to ensure all operations adhere to strict Navy and FAA safety standards.’

Officials reported the flyover caused a ‘disturbance on the beach’ but no serious injuries were reported.

Bystander Ashley Korn told WEAR: ‘I’ve been coming for 10 years and I’ve never seen a pass like that in my life.’

‘I literally thought we were going to be taken out by Blue Angels, but it was so amazing,’ the stunned spectator said.

Another witness said the jet blast knocked over tents and scattered equipment, but added that the dramatic moment was something they would never forget.

The flyover formed part of Pensacola’s annual ‘Breakfast with the Blues’ event, held ahead of the Pensacola Beach Air Show, which attracts huge crowds each summer to Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The Blue Angels have called Naval Air Station Pensacola home since 1946, making the city synonymous with the Navy’s elite flight demonstration squadron.

Created shortly after World War II, the team was established to showcase the skill and professionalism of US naval aviators while promoting public interest in naval aviation and inspiring future recruits.

Today, the squadron flies the Boeing F/A-18E and F Super Hornet, a twin-engine fighter jet capable of reaching speeds close to Mach 1.8.

During performances, pilots push their aircraft to the limit, flying just 18 inches apart while executing precision maneuvers under extreme forces of up to 7.5 G.

But behind the breathtaking displays are strict safety rules. Every display is meticulously choreographed and practiced, with strict altitude and safety requirements governing each maneuver.

Even minor departures from approved flight profiles are typically reviewed under Navy safety procedures.

The incident is particularly significant because Pensacola is considered the spiritual home of the Blue Angels, with thousands of fans traveling each year to watch the team perform above the city’s beaches.

The Pensacola Beach Air Show is expected to continue as planned while the Navy completes its internal review.

The Navy has not indicated whether any disciplinary action will result from the investigation.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Blue Angels for comment.
