With Jose Ramirez back, Guardians eye series win vs. Twins

Will his return be enough to spur them to a third straight American League Central Division crown?
Ramirez will be in the lineup for the second day in a row on Thursday afternoon when Cleveland wraps up a seven-game homestand against the Minnesota Twins.
Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams (10-5, 4.00 ERA) takes on Twins righty Taj Bradley (9-4, 3.85) in the finale of the four-game series.
Ramirez had been on the injured list since fracturing his wrist on June 13 against the Detroit Tigers — requiring surgery to remove the hook on the hamate — before being activated Wednesday. He did not go on a rehab assignment.
The seven-time All-Star third baseman went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run in Cleveland’s 10-6 loss. The Guardians went 15-15 with him on the shelf, remaining in a neck-and-neck battle with the first-place Chicago White Sox.
“I’m very happy to be back and thank God for be able to be back,” Ramirez said through interpreter Agustin Rivero. “I was a little anxious to be back with my teammates.
“The sensation of not being able to be in the lineup is something you can feel. It’s hard to explain, but it’s real.”
Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt wasted no time with the face of the franchise, putting Ramirez in his customary second spot in the batting order. He received a very warm ovation from the home crowd, then promptly singled and scored. “In the first inning, he showed you what we missed and his presence lifted up the whole group today,” Vogt said. “It was just fun to have him back, and it’s not a shock to see him come out of the gate this well.”
Ramirez was charged with an error when first baseman Kyle Manzardo failed to pick his throw off an Alan Roden grounder, but it hardly was significant as the Guardians lost for the first time in the series against division rival Minnesota.
Williams will pitch against the Twins for the third time this season, splitting his first two decisions with a 4.85 ERA. He has worked against them nine times (all starts) in all four years in the majors, compiling a 4-3 record and 3.27 ERA over 44 innings.
Minnesota pulled within three games of the Boston Red Sox for the final AL wild-card spot Wednesday, fueled by a four-RBI performance from Brooks Lee and three more by Trevor Larnach. Both also homered in the Twins’ top scoring night since July 4. It wasn’t all roses, though, as Bailey Ober continued their woeful stretch of starting pitching by giving up four runs in a season-low tying four innings.
The swoon began on July 18, when Bradley gave up five runs in five innings in a 6-2 loss at the Chicago Cubs that snapped his three-start winning streak. In four career games against Cleveland, he is 2-1 with a 1.54 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 23 1/3 innings.

Davis Schneider has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo, the Blue Jays announced before Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The infielder/outfielder was slashing just .153/.282/.296 with three home runs in 49 games for the Blue Jays before he was sent to Buffalo on June 30.
Schneider replaces Sean Keys, who has been sent back to the Bisons. Keys slashed .167/.189/.278 with one homer in 12 games for Toronto.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays also recalled left-hander Adam Macko from Buffalo and placed lefty Patrick Corbin (left teres major strain) on the 15-day injured list.
The Blue Jays play their series finale against the Rays at 3:07 p.m. ET / 12:07 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
Phil Foden has committed his long-term future to Manchester City after signing a new contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until June 2030. The deal also includes an option for a further year.
The England international, who joined City’s academy as a child, has become one of the club’s greatest homegrown success stories since making his senior debut in 2017.
Reacting to his new contract, Foden expressed his pride at continuing his journey with the club.
“Committing my future to City means everything to me. Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt.”
The 26-year-old has made 418 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 114 goals and providing 78 assists. During that time, he has helped the club win six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and two Community Shields.
Despite his success, Foden says his focus remains on adding more trophies.
“It’s not lost on me that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we’re always looking to the future and trying to win more.”
Foden also thanked everyone at Manchester City for their continued support throughout his career.
“I can only thank the club, staff, teammates and fans who continue to put their faith in me and trust that I give everything I can for City and I hope I’ll be able to repay you for years to come.”
The new contract ensures Manchester City retain one of the Premier League’s standout talents as the club prepares for another campaign under head coach Enzo Maresca, with Foden expected to remain a central figure in City’s ambitions.

What is WAFCON?
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is the continental tournament to find the best women’s international team in Africa. It has existed in some form since 1991 but the current competition’s history really starts in 1998, since when it has generally been held every two years.
Holders Nigeria have won a record 10 titles with only Equatorial Guinea (2012 as hosts) and South Africa (2022) having broken their domination of the tournament.
Originally planned as a 12-team tournament, the African football federation (CAF) added four more teams after qualification. Those four sides had all lost out in the second phase of qualifying but were then reinstated despite CAF earlier denying such changes were afoot. It was a sign of things to come.
Where and when is WAFCON 2026 being played?
For a third successive tournament, WAFCON is to be hosted by Morocco. Specifically, games are to be played in Rabat and Casablanca with a a third city, Fez, dropped from the initial lineup when the fixtures were announced.
Since pulling out of hosting the men’s AFCON in 2015, Morocco has become the favored African destination for both CAF and global football’s governors FIFA. The North African country, which also hosted the men’s AFCON last year, is to cohost the 2030 men’s World Cup and has been chosen, or been the sole bidder, for a number of continental and international youth tournaments.
The tournament opener, between Algeria and Senegal, is on July 26, with Morocco opening against Kenya later that day. The final is scheduled for August 16 in Rabat.
Why is WAFCON being played straight after the men’s World Cup?
It wasn’t supposed to be. After weeks of rumor, denial and a South African offer to step in as hosts, CAF announced just 12 days before the tournament was due to start in March that it would be postponed. CAF, rather vaguely, cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the delay.
“It is a combination of factors, and it is not a decision taken lightly,” Luxolo September, CAF’s head of communications, told DW at the time.
“There is a question of the host nation, Morocco, requesting a postponement for a number of reasons. There has been a lot of interaction between Morocco, FIFA and CAF regarding the date. This is not a nice position for us. We have taken no joy from this. We would have loved to play in this window. It is a window we had requested.”
Many teams, fans and players were frustrated by the short notice, with preparations made and money shelled out far in advance. It was not the first time though. Two years earlier, the tournament had been postponed by a year because the tournament clashed with the Olympics in Paris — a key date in the women’s football calendar.
As well as coming hot on the heels of the men’s World Cup, WAFCON 26 will now finish as the season starts in many countries. Germany’s women’s season for example, kicks off with the first round of the DFB Cup on same weekend as the WAFCON final.
Who are the favorites at WAFCON 26?
Hosts Morocco will want to match their men’s side, who won their AFCON tournament in controversial circumstances earlier this year, their maiden title, having lost the previous two finals.
Perennial champions Nigeria will once again enter as favorites while the 2022 winners, South Africa, will also fancy their chances. Below that are a host of teams who could cause a few surprises, including Ivory Coast, Egypt and debutants Cape Verde, whose men’s side became one of the stories of the World Cup.
Who are the players to watch at WAFCON 26?
Apart from Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji,Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade may be the most highly regarded talent. Named player of the tournament in 2024, Ajibade is a leader for her team, as well as its sharpest attacking threat. At the other end of the pitch, Nigeria will rely on Chiamaka Nnadozie, regarded as the continent’s best goalkeeper.
Hosts Morocco will look to Ghizlaine Chebbak. The top scorer at the last two tournaments, 35-year-old Chebbak may not have too many better chances to win a first major international honor.
Elsewhere, Tabitha Chawinga, of French champions Lyon, will carry the hopes of debutants Malawi, the lowest FIFA-ranked side in the competition. Chawinga’s international career has been interrupted by her club commitments but she has an exceptional 25 goals in her 11 caps to date. Her sister, Temwa, is also in the Malawi squad and plays her club football for the Kansas City Current of the NWSL, the top league in the United States. There, she won the 2025 Golden Boot as top goal scorer with 15 goals in 23 games.

A league table of football fans has been released as police call for more financial help in dealing with match day violence.
The Home Office announced on Thursday that incidents were reported at 1,644 matches in England and Wales during the 2025-26 season – the highest figure since the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) started collecting the data in 2017-18.
West Ham remained the club with the highest number of banning orders in force – increasing from 112 to 121. Manchester City were the club with the highest number of arrests (102), followed by Chelsea (76), Manchester United (67), Arsenal (66), Millwall (63).
Chief Constable Mark Roberts of Cheshire Police said the current model of funding – under which he said £70million of the cost falls on taxpayers – “doesn’t work” and “simply cannot continue”.
“We will continue to work with our partners including the Crown Prosecution Service, Premier League, EFL and FA to collectively make football a safe environment for the overwhelming majority of supporters who just want to enjoy the game,” Roberts said.
“However, a key part of this is looking at the funding provided to police forces by football clubs as the current model simply doesn’t work.
“Football-related crime doesn’t simply stop when fans exit the stadium, but under the current system multi-billion-pound football clubs do not have to pay a penny towards the policing outside their grounds.
“This means that taxpayers are left footing the £70m bill each season, which simply cannot continue.”
A Premier League spokesperson said: “The Premier League and its clubs work closely with police forces at a national and local level to ensure safe and welcoming environments for all fans.
“We are investing more than £90million a season in stewarding, security, crime prevention in communities and a series of technology-led pilots in partnership with a number of police forces and the UKFPU.
“This partnership approach will help the police to safely reduce the demand for policing around football matches, as the number of arrests continue to fall significantly over the last decade.”
The EFL has also been contacted for a response.
For the 2023-24 season, football clubs covered £14.87m of the total policing cost, with taxpayers picking up the £56.82m remainder, according to UKFPU figures.
The Home Office figures published on Thursday found there were 2,460 banning orders in force as of June 1, 2026, the highest since the end of the 2011-12 season.
There was also a 73 per cent rise in the number of online hate and abuse incidents in 2025-26 compared to the prior season – 405, up from 234.
Football-related arrests and police actions (1,963) were down by two per cent on the previous year, with 45 of those arrests made for unauthorised entry, which became a Schedule 1 offence under the Football Spectators Act 1989 on March 22 this year.
This is the second consecutive season where the number of arrests has fallen. There was a 59 per cent increase in the number of football-related arrests between the last season before the Covid-19 pandemic – 2018-19 – and the first full season after it – 2021-22.

The Baltimore Ravens enter training camp with one of the more interesting cornerback rooms in the AFC.
There is star power at the top, experience in the middle, and a long list of young defensive backs fighting for the final roster spots. Marlon Humphrey remains the established veteran. Nate Wiggins has the talent to become the next true No. 1 cornerback. Chidobe Awuzie gives Baltimore another proven option with starting experience. Behind them, the roster math becomes difficult quickly.

That is what makes cornerback one of the most important positions to watch when the Ravens report to camp. Anthony Weaver’s defense has enough talent up front and enough versatility at safety to be one of the NFL’s better units. Still, the cornerback group will help determine how flexible Baltimore can be in coverage.
Marlon Humphrey
Humphrey remains the tone-setter in the cornerback room. Listed at 6-foot and 210 pounds, the 30-year-old veteran is entering his 10th NFL season and still gives Baltimore one of its most trusted defensive backs.
His value goes beyond playing outside corner. Humphrey can slide inside, tackle, blitz, handle physical matchups and give the Ravens flexibility against different personnel groupings. With Wiggins ascending and Awuzie in the room, Baltimore may not need Humphrey to carry the same burden every week, but his versatility remains central to the defense.

Nate Wiggins
Wiggins may be the most important cornerback on the roster because of his ceiling. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 182 pounds, the former Clemson standout is entering his third season with the traits to become a true lead corner.
The Ravens need Wiggins to turn talent into consistency. His length, speed and ball skills give him the tools to match top receivers, but the next step is becoming the type of defender who can be trusted in every coverage situation. If Wiggins makes that leap, Baltimore’s entire secondary changes. Humphrey can be moved around more freely, Awuzie can settle into a defined role, and the Ravens can be more aggressive with their coverage calls.
Chidobe Awuzie
Awuzie gives the Ravens a valuable veteran presence. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 202 pounds, the 31-year-old is entering his 10th NFL season and should open camp as one of Baltimore’s three established cornerbacks.

His experience matters. Awuzie played 557 snaps last season, and his ability to handle outside work gives the Ravens insurance if injuries strike or if the younger corners need more time. He may not have the same upside as Wiggins, but his reliability could be important for a defense with championship expectations.
T.J. Tampa
Tampa is one of the key young corners to watch. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 199 pounds, the former Iowa State standout is entering his third season and has the size to compete on the outside.
The opportunity is clear. The Ravens have veteran options, but they also need young depth that can grow into larger roles. Tampa’s camp will be about showing improved consistency, better technique and enough special teams value to strengthen his roster case. If he stacks good practices and plays well in preseason games, he can make the depth chart much more difficult to sort out.

Amani Oruwariye
Oruwariye gives Baltimore another experienced outside cornerback option. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, the 30-year-old veteran has the size and length to match bigger receivers.
His challenge is roster math. The Ravens already have Humphrey, Wiggins and Awuzie positioned for important roles, and several younger defensive backs are pushing for developmental spots. Oruwariye must prove he gives Baltimore enough immediate reliability to justify keeping another veteran corner.
Bilhal Kone
Kone is another young corner with size worth monitoring. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, the former Western Michigan defensive back is entering his second season and has a profile that fits what teams look for in developmental outside corners.

For Kone, camp will come down to trust. He must show that he can handle coverage assignments, tackle consistently and contribute on special teams. If he does that, he can push for a depth role or position himself as a practice squad candidate with upside.
Robert Longerbeam
Longerbeam enters camp trying to separate from a crowded group of reserve corners. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 174 pounds, the former Rutgers defensive back is entering his second season and will need to make his mark through competitiveness, quickness and special teams effort.
In a room this deep, one or two splash plays will not be enough. Longerbeam must prove he can be assignment-sound, handle NFL tempo and avoid mistakes when preseason reps arrive.

Keyon Martin
Martin brings a smaller, quicker profile to the competition. Listed at 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, the former Louisiana-Lafayette cornerback is entering his second season and could factor into slot depth or special teams discussions.
His size means tackling, toughness and positioning will be especially important. Martin must show he can hold up physically while using his quickness to stay competitive in coverage. His clearest path is through special teams and preseason consistency.
Matthew McDoom
McDoom enters as a rookie out of Cincinnati, and his first task is proving he belongs in a crowded room. Listed at 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, he will need to stand out through speed, energy and special teams value.

The Ravens do not need every rookie cornerback to make the 53-man roster, but players can earn longer looks by showing they can cover kicks, tackle and compete against NFL receivers. McDoom’s preseason reps could determine whether he stays in the developmental conversation.
Chandler Rivers
Rivers is one of the more intriguing rookies in the cornerback room. Listed at 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, the former Duke defensive back will have to overcome a crowded depth chart, but his competitiveness and coverage instincts make him worth watching.

Lardarius Webb Jr.
Webb enters camp with a familiar Ravens name and a difficult numbers game. Listed at 5-foot-9 and 177 pounds, the rookie out of Wake Forest will need to show quickness, competitiveness and special teams value to stick.
The Ravens may not have room for every young cornerback on the initial 53-man roster, but Webb can help himself by showing enough developmental promise to remain in the organization. His preseason snaps will be important.

How many cornerbacks can the Ravens realistically keep?
That is the question that will define the group. Humphrey, Wiggins and Awuzie should be central pieces. Tampa has size and developmental value. Oruwariye brings veteran experience. Wallace provides secondary flexibility. After that, Baltimore must sort through Kone, Longerbeam, Martin, McDoom, Rivers, Robinson and Webb.
The final decisions could come down to special teams, positional versatility and whether the Ravens want veteran reliability or developmental upside at the back end of the depth chart.
Roster outlook
Humphrey, Wiggins and Awuzie headline the room. Tampa should enter camp with a strong chance to push for a depth role, while Oruwariye and Wallace provide veteran experience. Kone, Longerbeam, Martin, McDoom, Rivers, Robinson and Webb are fighting to separate in one of the most crowded competitions on the roster.

Marner’s agent, Darren Ferris, took some time Wednesday to rehash some of the conversations around his departure and what led to the star leaving his hometown team.
“As time went on, Mitch became the focus of everything. Scrutinized for every game, him and his family criticized after every loss. At points, receiving threats on social media, which was disturbing. I received plenty of disparaging comments and misguided reports myself. There was a hysteria,” Ferris said in an appearance on the PuckPedia Hockey Show.
“You gotta remember, Mitch was carjacked in Toronto. Every year the team came up short, he was the one singled out… This is a guy that had the most playoff points on the team, who played through a fractured ankle in the Boston series. He really bled for that team and he was never protected by his organization, in my opinion.”
Over his nine years with the Maple Leafs, Marner finished with 63 points (13 goals, 50 assists) in 70 post-season games, but is already outpacing that production after his lone run with the Golden Knights, putting up 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 22 games en route to a Stanley Cup Final appearance.
A native of Markham, Ont., Marner never advanced past the second round of the playoffs in those nine years with his hometown Maple Leafs.
However, Ferris revealed that issues between the player and team rose to the surface much sooner than the duo’s final playoff disappointment — a second-round defeat to the Florida Panthers in 2025.
“Right from the get-go. I think people think this whole story with Mitch started with his contract dispute originally or that negotiation, and that’s not really where it started,” Ferris said. “I mean, back when he first signed with the Leafs and his entry-level (contract), they did not want him to have performance bonuses in there.”
Then came Marner’s contract negotiation in 2019, which bled into training camp before he finally put pen to paper on a six-year, $65 million deal in September.
“To this day, people say he didn’t show up for training camp. Well, he did. He didn’t miss a day of training camp … He’s never ever held out from a camp,” Ferris said of that dispute. “So there was a lot of misinformation, which just kept spiralling into a lot of information that just made him the villain here in the city.”
Ferris, who has represented Marner since his days in junior hockey, also took the time to touch on his final season in Toronto, when his time with the team looked to be nearing an end, and then-general manager Brad Treliving began floating the two-time all-star’s name in trade talks.
It was reported that the Leafs had put together a potential deal with the Carolina Hurricanes that would’ve sent Mikko Rantanen to Toronto. Marner, who had a no-trade clause, reportedly declined the deal, but Ferris said that the relationship between player and team was soured from that point on.
“Much was made of the Carolina proposal that Brad Treliving put in front of him. Nobody had the real information that was out there. There was never a trade in place; it was just a suggestion put to Mitch — would he go to Carolina if a trade would be consummated?” Ferris said, mentioning that Marner didn’t like the timing of the deal because his wife was pregnant at the time and he didn’t want to uproot the family while that transpired.
“That Carolina thing … I don’t think helped the situation, and I think there was no real effort by the organization to rectify any of the concerns.”
