The Chicago Fire sent star striker Hugo Cuypers to CF Monterrey of Liga MX for a multimillion-dollar transfer fee, the MLS club announced Thursday.

Cuypers, 29, departed for a $7.5 million transfer fee plus $500,000 in add-ons, according to The Athletic. The Belgian’s exit opens a designated player roster spot.

“My time in Chicago is one that I will always treasure,” Cuypers said in a statement released by the team. “Since arriving here in 2024, the city has become a second home for me and my family.

“I would like to thank the club and staff and especially the fans for their unwavering support. I look forward to cheering the team from afar and wish my teammates nothing but the best.”

Named to the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, Cuypers has scored 13 goals this season, tied for the league lead with Petar Musa of FC Dallas. He established a Fire record this campaign by scoring in 10 consecutive matches in which he played.

Cuypers amassed 40 goals in 75 matches for the Fire since being acquired for a reported $12 million fee from Belgian first division side K.A.A. Gent in February 2024.

Chicago signed Polish free agent striker Robert Lewandowski in late June. The former star for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona made his Fire debut on Wednesday.

“We are incredibly grateful to Hugo for everything he has given this club, both on and off the field,” Chicago director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter said in the team’s news release. “He is an outstanding professional, a valued teammate and someone who has made a lasting impact on our group. We wish Hugo and his family nothing but success in this next chapter.

“While these decisions are never easy, this was the right move for both Hugo and the club,” Berhalter continued. “With his contract nearing its end, we felt this was the right moment to maximize the opportunity, create greater roster flexibility and continue investing in the squad to build a competitive roster now and in the years ahead.”

Commonwealth Games 2026 Live Updates: India will have a busy and potentially rewarding day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 24, with action spread across six sports and the country’s first opportunities to add medals to its tally. While several athletes begin their campaigns, para powerlifting will be the biggest focus as multiple Indian lifters compete in medal events throughout the evening.

Ashok and Parmjeet Kumar will open India’s medal challenge in the men’s lightweight category before Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi compete in the women’s lightweight final. Kasthuri Rajamani follows in the women’s heavyweight event, while Sudhir and Jhandu Kumar wrap up the day’s medal action in the men’s heavyweight final after midnight.

The boxing ring will also see India’s campaign begin, with Jadumani Singh taking on Scotland’s Aaron Cullen in the men’s 55kg round of 32. India already has one guaranteed medal in boxing after Lovlina Borgohain advanced directly to the women’s 75kg semi-finals.

Olympian Srihari Nataraj will be one of the key names in the pool as he competes in the men’s 50m backstroke heats. If he progresses, he will return later in the night for the semi-finals. Para swimmers Ravi Budigna and Imam Ali will also compete in the men’s S13 100m freestyle, with the final scheduled after midnight.

Bowls will also feature Indian interest, with Putul Sonowal looking to continue his impressive form after defeating reigning world champion Ryan Bester in his opening match. The women’s pairs combination of Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey will face South Africa in their second sectional contest as India looks to build momentum across multiple disciplines in Glasgow.

Historic first at Commonwealth Games as Braille medals debut in Glasgow

Glasgow 2026 will make Commonwealth Games history by introducing medals featuring braille and tactile elements, ensuring visually impaired athletes can experience their achievements in a more inclusive way. The innovation marks the first time Commonwealth Games medals have been designed with braille, reflecting the organisers’ broader commitment to accessibility and inclusion. That vision is also evident in the Games programme, which includes a record 47 gold medals across six Para sports, making it the largest Para sport programme in Commonwealth Games history. In total, athletes will compete for 215 gold medals across 10 sports and six Para sports. The medals themselves also break away from tradition in their appearance. Instead of the conventional circular design, they have been crafted in the shape of a Reuleaux triangle, inspired by Glasgow’s coat of arms. Several elements of the host city’s identity have been incorporated into the design. The engraved patterns draw inspiration from the Finnieston Crane, one of Glasgow’s most recognisable landmarks and a tribute to the city’s shipbuilding heritage. The textured finish reflects tartan, a symbol synonymous with Scotland, while the three raised levels on the medal represent the podium’s first, second and third steps. The medal was created by award-winning artist Militsa Milenkova, who was born in Bulgaria and serves as an artist in residence at the Glasgow School of Art. Her concept was selected from submissions by students and artists from the institution’s Silversmithing and Jewellery programme. Commonwealth Games medals have traditionally reflected the identity of the host city, and Glasgow’s edition continues that tradition. At the same time, it sets a new benchmark by becoming the first medal in the event’s history to include braille, making one of sport’s greatest honours more accessible to every athlete who earns it.
